29.

Here's Sir Harry with the other New York team. He was theirs in 1957 though he did not play for the varsity in the regular season.

I believe you. I was more enthralled with the fact that he was actually under 30 in the pic. Now the more I stare it, it seems like a cross between Roger Craig and Doug Rader is staring back.

Today's final image from the Vault (so far, at least) is Rich Chiles with the Astros. Could a respectable Mets Chiles be forthcoming? (Yeah, I know the Vault previously gave us a tiny crappy Mets Chiles; please don't torture me by posting that one).

Christmas Comes Early!

Thanks to all for leaving that headline for me! Three-year, three-team catcher Steve Christmas (Reds 1983, White Sox 1984, Cubs 1986) has a pair of TV images from his first stop. While he was a mainstay in Triple-A sets during his playing career, no major league card was made.

Happy holidays! The Vault is open.

Chiti! Um... Cerv!

(Ah well, Bob Cerv. Still a great portrait that deserved a cleanup.)

How are you all able to get the Topps Vault releases before they appear on ebay? Is there a link for this?

Thanks in advance.

Don't Guess

The above Yankee and Met batter is long time outfielder Bob Cerv and NOT Harry Chiti.

Chiti would never have appeared in Yankee Stadium in a Yankee uniform, nor in spring training with the Mets (he was obtained from Cleveland and returned in midseason 1962). The photos of Cerv wearing white undersleeves is from his abortive stint with the Mets in Spring Training 1963. Topps in fact shot Chiti at the Polo Grounds, probably in May, 1962.

I appreciate they both have craggy faces but Chiti was well known for his near mono-brow:

Pete Cimino 1965

The missing Angels player in your list is pitcher Morris Cigar.

This Angel pitcher went west in the Dean Chance trade and other than the image from the same shoot that appears on his '68 Topps card, I haven't seen another color image of Cimino in Halo garb.

I appreciate they both have craggy faces but Chiti was well known for his near mono-brow:
Well, what can I say? I didn't think it was a guess. I fully believed I recognized him. He immediately and convincingly looked like Chiti to me. Between the nose (few noses look like that) and, yes, the eyebrows (which fan out wider towards the center face--and few sets of eyebrows look like that), and the chin, He looked like Chiti. I could think of no other Met who looked anything close to that. I have no recollection of Bob Cerv being a Met (though, checking the earlier postings of NRI, I see him listed). Since he wasn't a Met, I'd have no clue what Bob Cerv looked like. Seriously. I'm a one team guy and make no secret of that. Whether Chiti's brows appear mono or not largely depends upon the image you're viewing. As for Chiti being in Yankee Stadium, it wouldn't be the first or last time a club brought an extra catcher (not on the active roster) north for the start of the season. Nowadays, of course, they have official "bullpen catchers" included on the coaching staff. That today's Vault releases were of Chaney and Chalk and Christian and Christienson and Chrisley and Chiles, seemed to confirm that it would be a Ch player--which, since I already saw him as Chiti, fit.

Anyway, realizing that I'm clearly the only person to ever mis-identify an image in the recorded history of people identifying images (thank God Topps never did that; oh wait...), I'll just keep my mouth shut from now on. Apologies for wasting everyone's time.

This is not gratuitous criticism

I'm not following the logic here. You were sure because you really wanted it to be Chiti and you ignored all the clues, and made up new ones, to fit your conclusion. This doesn't help anybody here, nor does the martyrdom.

The alphabetical sequence was Chaney, Chamberlain, Chalk, Chadwick, ----, Cash. Where does "Chiti" fit in there? If it's the sequence you relied on, the name has alphabetically to go between Cash and Chadwick. If it's the Yankee image that convinced you, you can clearly see the number 17 on his back - worn by Enos Slaughter from August, 1956 into September, 1959. If it's the fact Chiti was Yankee property in 1957 then there should be some reference to it online, to explain how he played in 120 games in AAA and yet showed up at Yankee Stadium as "a bullpen catcher" - even though the Yankees already had one of those named Darrell Johnson who spent the whole season there. And as mentioned earlier, St. Petersburg is an impossible location for a Chiti/Mets photo.

This may seem like trivial nitpicking to you, but the misidentification of photos leaks into google searches and the next thing you know a search for Chiti with the Mets turns up Bob Cerv, creating a mess that could take who knows how long to correct.

The irony to this is that the Cerv/Mets image is a far scarcer, far greater find than Chiti/Mets. Cerv only wore that uniform for a month or less at a time when there were no spring training photo days nor photographers blanketing the camps.

Got it.... So Bob was roughly 37 in the Mets pic? That actually helps my original take ....

Harry Chiti 1950

Chiti with the '62 Mets, from a private collection.

Say Hey Crabbers!

I wanted to share this from the Lexibell files just because it made me smile.
November, 1953: young New York Giants outfielder Willie Mays finds himself among some familiar faces as he plays winter ball for the Santurce Crabbers (or "Cangrejeros") in New York teammate Ruben Gomez and his manager with Santurce, Herman Franks.

Tony Chevez 1977

Kind of hard to believe that when the Orioles took the nearly unprecedented step of signing a couple of pitching prospects from Nicaragua, Tony Chevez was the can't-miss guy and the gangly kid Dennis Martinez was the tag-along. Tony Chevez - BR Bullpen

Martinez beat Chevez to the majors by a year, and the latter made just four appearances before an injury effectively ended his career.

Charlie Chant 1975

Not impossible to find but still limited in images. Came to the plate just five times with the 1975 A's, then to St. Louis. Topps shot him with the latter club at Busch Stadium in '76 and in at least one spring training.

Steve Chilcott (Never)

1971 spring training images of the catcher the Mets infamously chose first in the 1966 draft ahead of Reggie Jackson (and Steve Garvey, Bill Russell, Gary Nolan, Charlie Hough - and not many others as the first 10 rounds were astoundingly unproductive).

Two pieces of ID business

1) Folder GY has been posted on the OneDrive site John@baseball-birthdays is managing.

2) A correction: in folder NN, 046 is Joe Moock, not Dan Monzon.
Thanks to gilligantuan, who stared at it for several days without blinking until he realized who it actuallly was.
