Larry Foss 1961
Not only is that Foss, but it's a Brace shot of Foss - with that discoloration - that the same seller offered another copy of, in the last few years. The Fosnow/Foss mistake is understandable. But it's Foss.

Unidentified Phillies Player
My best guess is pitcher Phenomenal Smith, just without the facial hair he is sporting in the team cabinet photo. My best pic of him is from a few years before, but the ears seem to match ok as does the nose.

and, for what it's worth, I've bought a few items from kyle's... the actual photos usually look better than his scans in case any of you had thoughts of buying.

Don Liddle 1953
Faced one man in Game One of the 1954 World Series, Vic Wertz, whose little fly ball was run down by Willie Mays in one of the epic moments in the history of sports. Famous for his supposed remark to his successor on the mound, Marv Grissom: "I got my guy."

Here's the Foss with some correction to get rid of (or at least minimize) that pesky discoloration.
I see now I should have done that strip on the field, but I was focused on Foss, himself, at the time. Last edited by FatJack; 04-25-2016 at 03:24 AM. |

Harry Perkowski
Southpaw Harry Perkowski, who pitched for the Reds and Cubs, passed away this past Wednesday, April 20, 2016. He was 93.
All Harry ever wanted to do in life was become a professional baseball player. He learned the game on the coalfields of West Virginia. At that time, the mining companies cared as much or more about their company baseball teams as they did about the mining, and the good players got better pay and softer work. Harry's father was the miner in the family, but Harry watched the games and then practiced with homemade baseballs fashioned from paper and tape. After graduating from high school, Harry signed with the Class D Natchez Giants in Mississippi, part of the Evangeline League. The league soon folded as America had entered into the War and bodies and resources were needed overseas. Harry was drafted into the US Navy and served in both the European and Pacific theaters. Harry resumed his baseball career in 1946, signed by Cincinnati. He dominated with Class C Ogden, going 23-6 with a 2.09 ERA. The next year, he won 17 with Class A Columbia. That was enough to get him his first major league cup of coffee that September. Harry spent all of 1948 with the Tulsa Oilers, winning 22 and again keeping his ERA south of 3. After winning 14 games with Syracuse in 1949, Harry joined the Reds varsity and stuck with them for the next few years. He pitched mostly in relief in 1950 and 1951. Moved to the rotation in 1952, he posted back-to-back 12 win seasons. But he faltered in 1954 and was traded to the Cubs. Harry's last major league action came with Chicago in 1955. Back in the pen, he was 3-4 with an ERA of 5.29. He pitched in the minors through 1960, mostly in relief, posting one more 12 win season with Fort Worth in 1958. He retired at the age of 38. His career major league record was 33-40, but his minor league record was 117-63. Among his many jobs after baseball, Harry was an ambulance driver, a school bus driver, a Sheriff's Deputy, and the Mabscott Chief of Police. Below are a couple of images of Harry with the Reds. John posted a very nice image of Harry with Chicago in these pages several years ago. If you're looking for color, the best picture I've seen was on Harry's 1953 Bowman Color baseball card. For my money, that's the most beautiful baseball card set ever made (just sayin'). |

Nice job. But what is that strip made of? Is that asphalt? Or some other non-grass material? If so, then maybe that strip looks like it's supposed to, and doesn't need any more correcting.

Chilcott (Never) -- Topps envelope
For those who get a kick out of such things like I do, this came from Topps along with the Chilcott transparency.

That half-envelope, by the way, features the lettering of the Topps Sports Editor, SABR co-founder (16 of them), card expert (I'm very proud to have maintained and added to his collections of Seattle Popcorn, 1903 Breisch-Williams E107, and T210 Old Mill), and internal Topps historian and photo preservationist, the late Bill Haber. No Bill, no Topps Vault.

McCann pitched in 1901 and 1902 for Brooklyn, and had a long career in baseball as a minor league manager and a scout for the Yankees. |

Bill Haas
Two rookie cards (1963, 1964), no major league games. 405 RBI in 607 minor league games, and one of a thousand Met first base prospects and transients who got a day at the position from the day they bought Marv Throneberry through the day they traded for Keith Hernandez.

Bill Haas was one of the players acquired by the Mets in the so-called "help the poor" draft (for the Colts and Mets) in the 1963-64 off season. The Mets did get Fat Jack Fisher from the Giants in that draft, which worked out alright. Haas was a hitting prospect for the Dodgers who was expected to make the Mets major league squad. But his glove, reportedly, made Dick Stuart look like a gold glover. He was farmed out to AAA Buffalo to work on his fielding and he did improve, but then his bat fell asleep. Hitting around .180 a month into the season with ZERO RBIs, the Mets wanted to send Bill to AA Williamsport, but Bill wanted none of it and "quit"...or at least threatened to. He must have thought better of it as he did report to Williamsport in the end and remained in the system through 1966, but never did play in the majors. Some very quick and rudimentary color correction and brightening applied. Last edited by FatJack; 04-26-2016 at 03:35 PM. |

Not an impossible Met, but its good to have a solid Vault image in NY garb of the center fielder best remembered for a collision with Stork Theodore in the summer of '73.

Veteran Brewer righty, evidently photographed while in Little League - in the pre-1978 Milwaukee uniform in which he is seldom seen.

Not impossible in a Cubs uni, but tough (a shot of him in the 1985 version when he went back to Wrigley in a swan song - that's something I've never seen):
