Cy Vorhees 1902
In his only season in the major leagues (after playing at Oberlin College and Syracuse University), Henry Vorhees pitched in ten games for the Phillies and one for Washington. His pitching record was mediocre (3-4, 3.94 ERA, and he allowed a home run by Christy Mathewson) but his batting record was outstanding (9-for-23, .391 + 3 walks). He pitched a few more years in the minors, and died in 1910. The bull terrier's name was "Joy". |

Mike Grace 1978
3 pinch-hitting appearances and two stints as a defensive replacement. Posted some McCarthys of him here previously; turns out Topps got him too.

Don Secrist 1969
Not a lot of color of this long-term Reds' minor leaguer who got into 28 games in relief for the '69 and '70 White Sox. Even his Topps card, while listing him with Chicago, actually uses a shot taken while he was pitching for Indianapolis.

Giants pitcher Jim Gott hit three home runs during the 1985 season, and it apparently went to his head. Not only did Gott strike a batting pose for the Vault photo released today, he likewise gabbed a bat for a shot used in the team-issued 1986 Giants postcards.
He added another homer in 1987. One can imagine his excitement when he was traded from the American League before the '85 season. He was a career .178 hitter. Last edited by rico43; 05-05-2016 at 06:40 PM. |

Joe Foy 1966
A couple of nice (albeit B&W) Joe Foy Mets images being offered by kyles on eBay. I've cropped, brightened and greyscaled them.
I'm diggin' the wirephoto with Buddy, Krane, Donn and (I think that's) Boswell surrounding Foy. Although, given the stories, it does make it look like maybe they were all catching a contact high or something. Either that or someone just slapped a "kick me" sign on Joe's back. |

George Stone 1903
There are plenty of photos of George Stone in his St. Louis uniform during his heyday with the Browns, 1905-1910; he led the American League in hits in his first full season and in batting average in his second. Stone made his major league debut in 1903 with the Boston team that went on to win the World Series. He struck out twice in two substitute at-bats (not yet called pinch-hitting appearances). Stone was noted for the extreme crouch that he stood in at the plate, which was not favored by Manager Jimmy Collins. Early in the 1903 season Collins sent Stone to Milwaukee of the American Association, where he played through 1904. (The cap does not match the 1903 Boston uniform; I suspect that this photo was taken in spring training and that Stone did not yet have a complete uniform. In fact, it may date from spring training of 1905; he could be wearing a Browns cap with his Boston shirt.) Last edited by RUKen; 05-06-2016 at 12:59 PM. |

Joe Foy 1966
Is there a Foy/Mets shortage I'm unaware of?

Yes, very much so. The image you've posted with your question is the best of the lot. It's the 1970 YB image, desaturated and recolorized, or similar. The image Cheech posted is colorized. There are some decent B&W Foys, if you want to colorize, but there isn't much in genuine color. The '71 Dell stamp is likely the best color image in the wild, but those were poorly printed and you don't see scans of the originals posted anywhere. Even in B&W, Joe had a tendency to look goofy in his Mets days.
The Vault has given us a couple of good Senators images in the HZ folder (attached), but has otherwise been stingy on Foys. Non-Vault Red Sox images are out there, but there's little for KC or NY. |

Foy Sticker
Here's the sticker FatJack mentioned. It ain't great, but it's the closest thing I've seen to a Topps shot of Foy as a Met. (From the Senators stamp book, if anyone's curious.)
One day the Vault will provide. Until then.... |

1894 Sioux City Cornhuskers
There are numerous major leaguers on this roster, such as George Hogriever, Lefty Marr and Lew Camp. This photo did not come with identifications, so any help is appreciated. We could definitely use photo upgrades of all the aforementioned players.

Joe Foy 1966
Have the images, low-resolution obviously and dated more than a decade ago, but I no longer have an indication on the origins of either:

Charles "Lefty" Marr 1886
This photo of Lefty Marr is an enlargement of one of his Old Judge cards. Seems that it gives us a resemblance of the elongated nose of the player sitting at the far left in the Sioux City photo.

Re: 1894 Sioux City
I would have to agree on both of those ids, Cusick. Lew Camp is the one I can't figure out because the only pic I have of him is a line drawing. He is undoubtedly in there somewhere though, since he had over 400 plate appearances.
One other note; this team crushed the ball all year. Apparently the rules changes that affected pitching so much in 1894 also affected the minor leagues. |

1969 Kansas City Royals
Merkle's Joe Foy brought to mind 2 other 1969 Royals who could use upgrading... Paul Schaal and Bill Butler
