We took 2 of 3 from the Royals as the Sox dropped 2 of their 1st 3 at Seattle. 11 games left and the next 7 are on the road. We are in Texas for 4 games and they are still in it, just 3 1/2 back.
Angels 84-67 Chicago 84-68. 1/2 Oakland 82-70 2 1/2 Texas 81-71 3 1/2

We took 3 of 4 from Texas, essentially eliminating them, they are now 5 1/2 back with 6 left. The A's lost 3 and are also on life support 5 games back. The White Sox kept pace, however, and they sit 1/2 back.
We have 1 more game left than the Sox, a make up of a rain out against the Brewers. Would be something to have the season come down to a make up game. Looks like Wade Boggs will top Lynn for the batting average crown. Lynn is tied with Aikens and Horner with 36 HR's with Jack Clark sitting at 35 and Ben Oglivie at 34. Lynn is 14 RBI's in 1st in that category. Ray Fontenot leads in ERA at 2.45 ahead of Frank Viola at 2.74. In the NL, Mike Marshall is still trying to get that Triple Crown. He leads in hitting at .337, but Gene Richards is right there at .335. He has 47 HR's, 8 more than Larry Hisle, who just hit his 300th. He also has 14 RBI more than Hisle, so if he can keep his average over Richards, he will get it. Tim Leary may do something that has never been done in history....again. He leads the league with 18 wins. He led the league as a rookie 2 years ago with 21 wins, and he led last year with 19 wins. Nobody has ever led the league in wins their first 2 years in the league until then, so of course, 3 in a row would be a record I can't ever see being broken

Game 1 of our 3 game series in KC had us down 1-0 with 2 outs in the 9th when we put up 8 straight hits for 7 runs. And we needed every one of them because we proceeded to give up 5 in the bottom of the 9th to hang on by our fingernails 7-6. Combined with a Sox loss, and we are 1 1/2 up.
Blyleven gave up just 1 run over 8 and Howell added a grand slam in the 6th for an 8-2 win and the Sox lost to Seattle again, so 2 1/2 up with 5 to go In game 3, Darryl Gambrero shut us down, only allowing Howell's 21st HR and striking out 9 with a 1-hit 5-1 win. Coupled with the Sox beating the Mariners, our lead is is now 1 1/2 going into an off day. Fred Lynn was named player of the month having gone .356 with 10 HR, 26 HR and 24 runs. Bob Tewksbury was named Rookie of the Month having gone 4-1 with a 3.43 ERA We now have 3 at home against the Rangers as the Sox have 3 at last place Minnesota. Our magic # is 3

We fell behind 4-0 early in game 1 but scored 4 in the bottom of the 2nd to tie it up. Clark Ullum gave up 2 more runs after 5 and then our bullpen shut them down the rest of the way. We made in 6-5 in the 6th and despite leadoff men getting on in the 8th and 9th, we couldn't tie it up.
The Sox beat the Twins 11-9 so now the gap is 1/2 a game. Our magic # is still 3. As the Sox were losing to the Twins 11-3, we were behind the Rangers 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th when Vernon Armstead hit a 2 run double to give us the lead, followed by Dan Briggs smashing a 3-run home run as our magic number has now been reduced to 1. 29 year old Briggs has been such a solid player for us throughout his career. in 3800 AB's, he's gone .282/.340/.414 averaging a little over 2 WAR a season. This year he is .310/.361/.430 with 9 HR, 34 2B, and 93 RBI's. I've had him hit 6th most of the season and he has knocked in our 3-5 guys regularly. We just re-upped him at $532,000 a year for 3 more seasons. We had Blyleven out there to clinch, but he struggled, giving up 4 runs through 6, while Steve Burke with a 5.88 ERA shut us down and we lost 4-1. Coupled with the White Sox winning their 162nd game of the season, we are 1/2 game up and we have to play our make up game in Milwukee. Fontenot, who leads the league in ERA for us, will face Mark Davis who is 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA and leads the league with 197 strikeouts.

Davis and Fontenot were great matching zeros through 6 when the Brewers scratched across a run. We were down to 2 outs when Jeff Burroughs hit his 20th HR to tie things up. But Amstead overthrew 3rd base in the bottom of the 9th and we lost 2-1.
After 162 games, we will play the Sox, win or go home. Damn

It was our #5 James Chamberlain against their #3 Sandy Whitol. We scored in the bottom of the 1st on a Lynn ground out, then Armstead cracked a 2-run double in the 5 to go up 3--0 as Chamberlain was cruising. But he gave up 5 straight hits to open the 6th and suddenly it was tied. Steve Busby saved the day retiring 3 straight White Sox with the bases loaded to keep it 3-3.
Roy Howell put us back in front 5-3 with his 97th and 98th RBI and Bombo Rivera added a single and we led 6-3. Lawrence Bashaw pitched 2 perfect innings and we took the West. Now we have the Blue Jays who are 1st in runs but 10th in runs allowed and they are without Eric Davis and Gary Carter due to injuries.

Game 1 was in Toronto, where the wind chill was 31 degrees with a 15 MPH wind blowing straight in, the wind knocked down likely 2 Willie Aikens and 1 Roy Howell home run and Clark Ullom and Francis Patrick matched zeros through 8 innings when we scratched across a run in the top of the 9th. However, Aikens finally put one over the wall in the bottom of the 9th for a walk-off 2 run HR to give the Jays a 1-0 series lead.
In game 2, Fred Lynn went 2 for 4 with 4 RBI and career playoff hitting .121 Dave Concepcion hit his 53rd career HR in 6900 at bats and we tied the series at 1 with an 8-4 win.

Game 3 was a classic. An absolute classic.
14 game winner Bert Blyleven faced 12 game winner David DeLuca in a lovely fall evening, no worries about freeze warning in Anaheim. We pushed an unearned run across in the 2nd to take the lead, but singles by Strawberry and Singleton gave the Jays a 2-1 lead.. In the bottom of the 3rd, 2-time MVP Fred Lynn hit his 1st post-season HR in his first ever post-season in his 10 year career and we led 3-2. From there, DeLuca and Blyleven only allowed a total of 3 hits from the 4th through the 7th setting up a classic ending. In the 8th, I pulled Blyleven after a leadoff walk to Von Hayes and 110 pitches with 2 lefties coming up and Al Holland fresh in the bullpen. Hayes then took off for second and we had him dead to rights, but the throw by Ted May sailed into center and Hayes ended up on 3rd where he scored on a sac fly by Strawberry and we are tied after 8. In the 9th, the Jays put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs when David Rusco lined a single up the middle and fleet-footed Darryl Thomas came flying around 3rd, but Vernon Armstead threw a pea and May blocked the plate and nailed him, keeping it tied up. Next man up, Jose Urena lofted one to left where Fred Lynn grabbed it with a running start and nailed Otto Velez at home, nailing back-to-back runners at home!! And with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth facing Jays closer Mike Smith, Lynn stamped his name in our teams post-season history books with a 440 foot walk-off to dead center. Lynn has 2 HR's, 7 RBI and an outfield assist after his 1st 3 post-season games. Not bad.

AL ERA leader Ray Fontenot was dealing from pitch 1 to pitch 105, spinning a 2-hit shutout with no walks and 6 strikeouts as the Angels made it back to the World Series with a 3-0 win over Toronto in game 4 in front of 46,209 happy fans.
The only run-scoring play in the game was a 3-run home run by Jeff Burroughs in his first post-season in his 9th year in the majors. Fred Lynn was named series MVP hitting .312 with 2 HR/7 RBI/1 assist/2 top notch plays in left We will face the Atlanta Braves who beat the Mets 3-1. In game 4, SS Spike Owen made a diving play with the bases loaded in the top of the 9th and hit a walk-off HR to win the series. Spike Owen with his Bucky-f-ing-Dent moment.

We jumped on Tim Leary early, after a Jeff Cox infield single, Fred Lynn smashed one off the left wall, too hard to score Cox, but Amstead did his job, grounding to short to knock in Cox. Roy Howell following with a gapper to score Lynn, and it was 2-0 before the Braves could see a pitch. When they did, they loaded them up with 1 out in the first, but Clark Ullom got John Castino to fly out to shallow right and Ron Roenicke to ground harmlessly to third to end the threat.
Gary Redus led off the 3rd with a walk and on a 2-2 pitch, Garry Maddox hit a home run to left center that just cleared the wall to tie things up at 2. Redus came up again with 2 outs and runner on in the 4th and took it deep to left and the Braves went up 4-2. I decided to let Ullom hit in the 5th and he struck out, but Lennie May followed with a double and Jeff Cox hit a liner that just cleared the left field wall and just like that, we are tied at 4. Ullom didn't have it, he promptly loaded the bases with 1 out in the 5th and on came Steve Busby to face the bottom 3rd of the order. Mike Brown slashed a single to right to score 2 and it's 6-4 Atlanta. After a double steal, intentional walk and strikeout, Busby walked Redus with the bases loaded and it was 7-4 Braves after 5. The 6th and 7th were scoreless and the Braves brought in closer Dennis Lamp to start the 8th where leadoff man Nay blooped one to center to lead it off. With 2 outs, Armstead smacked a double to left to cut the lead to 7-5. Howell also lined a double to the gap in left and just like that, it was 7-6 with Dan Briggs coming up with the tying run at 2nd. We pinch ran Rodney Scott (80) for Howell (25) even though there were 2 outs in case of a single. But Briggs grounded to short to end that threat. After the Braves went out harmlessly in the 8th, we went down harmlessly in the 9th with a Ted May fly out, Charles Stafford strikeout and Bombo Rivera fly out and the Braves took game 1 in Atlanta, 7-6

Just like in game 1, we scored in the 1st off Terry Gardner to give Bob Tewksbury a 1-0 lead and that stood up until the bottom of the 3rd when Mickey Hatcher cracked a 2 run shot to left to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. Lou Whitaker took the next pitch over the wall to right and we were behind 3-1 and another RBI single later in the inning made it 4-1 after 3.
And that was it all the way until the 9th when Gardner was pulled in favor of Richard Summers and Cox and Lynn greeted him with back to back singles to bring the tying run to the plate with nobody outs. Armstead hit a liner to right for the first out, Howell popped out to center and Briggs grounded to first and it was over.. Going back to Cali.

47,113 greeted us back at home without that damn tomahawk chop chant. Our two best pitchers, Blyleven and Fotentot are going against their #3 and 4 and hopefully we get this down to a best of 3.
In the top of the first, we lost Rodney Scott to injury as he was taken out by Lou Whitaker on an RBI ground out. Whitaker then added a 2-out single as we were trying to pitch around him and it was 2-0. After he stole 2nd, DH Ellis Valentine knocked him in and we are in trouble, 3-0. Former Angel Mike Brandt had us shut down until 2 outs in the fifth when Lynn singled in Alfaro, in at short for Scott. After an Armstead walk, Howell pulled a 3-2 pitch into the corner for a 2-out 2-run double to tie this up at 3. A big at bat in the top of the seventh as with 2 out and 2 out and Whitaker lined a full count pitch to right to make it 4-3. Lamp took over in the 8th and Armstead led off with an infield single. After a walk and fielders choice, Rivera weakly popped out to right and Jeff Burroughs drew a 3-2 walk. With the bases loaded and everyone on their feet, rookie Jesus Alfaro in his 4th ever post season AB hit one about 45 feet dribbled down the 3rd base line, Hatcher couldn't make a play and it was tied. Nay followed up with a first pitch liner up in middle, 2 runs scored and the Angels went up 6-4. Cox did the same and the inning closed with us up 7-4. They put a runner on 2nd but Bashaw closed it out and we were back in it. The bad news is Whitaker broke Rodney Scott's foot in that aggressive take out slide. We added rookie Steve Sax to take his spot. If he leads an inning off tomorrow night...

In game 4, AL ERA leader Ray Fontenot faced another formed Angel, Blue Moon Odom as we try to tie this up at 2 games a piece.
Mickey Hatcher gave the Braves an early 1-0 lead with a 1-our double in the first. Ellis Valentine added a sac fly to make it 2-0 after the top of the first. We didn't wait long to get into the game, consecutive singles by Cox, Lynn and Amstead got us to 2-1 and a 4th straight single by Howell loaded them up for Dan Briggs who drew a walk to tie it up. Rivera hit into a fielders choice and it was 3-2 Angels but we weren't done. Jeff Burroughs lined a single to left and we now led 4-2 after 1. Their MVP had a chance in the 2nd to tie things up with men on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs, but Whitaker grounded out to 2nd. Our MVP Fred Lynn took the last pitch Blue Moon Odom threw deep to right to lead off the 2nd and we led 5-2. The next time Lynn came up in the 4th against reliever Jeffrey Culbreath, he lined a single to center knocking in Burroughs for his 10 post season RBI, 6-2 Angels. Castino singled in Whitaker to trim that to 6-3 in the top of the 5th, but Alfaro added an RBI single to give us a 4-run lead again and Cox made it 8-3 with another single. Fontenot was replaced by James Chamberlain after 6 innings having given up 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks, he was in trouble all night and Chamberlain was our #5 all year and I brought him in to go the rest of the way. Armstead made it a little easier with an RBI single in the 8th and Chamberlain finished it out with 3 no-hit innings walking 1 and the Series is now tied at 2 after a 9-3 win. Now we go back to Leary v. Ullom for game 5 and the Braves get Reggie Smith back for game 6 in Atlanta. We need this one.

Ullom got through the first two, coaxing a double play grounder from Garry Maddox in the first, and in the bottom of the 2nd, Bombo Rivera his a double to center to give us a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when, with Alfaro on first, Lennie May was fooled by a curveball, but the leadoff man almost one handed it and barely wrapped it around the foul pole to bring it to 3-0. In the 6th, we had to bring Charles Stafford off the bench to replace Briggs in right after suffering back spasms on a throw to 3rd base. Ullom got Whitaker on a lineup with runners on the corners to end the threat. In our half of the 6th, Burroughs lined a forkball that didn't fork over the wall in left and we took the lead to 4-0. Nay led off the 7th and was sitting fastball and wasn't fooled this time and ripped his 2nd HR of the night, he's not just a fast guy that gets on base. He had 22 HR in AA last year and has all the tools. 5-0 Angels. Charles Stafford was 0-4 in his first playoffs as a rookie when he came on a few innings back for Briggs. But he took a Jim York pitch over the wall in left to make it 6-0. Now that is a surprise. In 1550 professional at-bats, that was just his 8th HR. However, Bombo Rivera's season came to an end trying to go from 1st to 3rd tearing his groin. Really, Bombo? Up 6-0? Just jog my friend. Ullom finished with an 9-hit, zero walk and zero strikeout complete game shutout and we lead 3-2 going back to the ATL But we lost Scott and Rivera to injuries and they get our former all-star Reggie Smith back. We just need 1

I had assumed the Braves would have had Smith on the playoff roster, but they did not. Good news for us as we flew to Atlanta for game 6. I had two tough decisions; do I play good fielding, no-hit veteran Dave Concepcion or not-quite average fielding and good hitting rookie Jesus Alfaro, and do I play Dan Briggs, .300 hitting in the regular season, but just .133 and day-to-day with a bad back, or Jeff Burroughs, who hit just .220 in the regular season, but he had 19 home runs and has hit 2 more homers in the regular season.
I went with Burroughs at 1b and rookie Alfaro at short. I give Briggs another day off to recover in case Burroughs comes up empty. Did it matter? Well, a Redus single, Maddox double and Hatcher single made it 1-0 Braves before Tewksbury recorded an out. Whitaker made it 2-0 and Brown singled him in and it was 3-0 after 1. Castino made it 4-0 with a sac fly after 3 as Terry Garnder was perfect for Atlanta through 3. Nay singled to lead off the 4th, but a double play quickly took care of that. The Braves busted it open with 6 hits off Tewskbury and William Sheets making it 8-0. It was all but over, Garnder struck out 8 through 8 shutout innings. He finally ran out of gas in the 9th and Burroughs hit a 2-out grand slam off reliever Jim York, but that was all. 8-4 Braves and we would go all 7 games.

Game 7 and it's our 4-time All-Star and former Cy Young winner Bert Blyleven going against former Angel Mike Brandt. Since Burroughs hit a grand glam and was our only offense in game 6, he gets the start at 1st, but I am inserting Dan Briggs in over Lennie Nay. Brandt is a leftie as are Nay and Briggs, but Nay struggles much more against lefties and am going with the veteran in game 7.
I am doing the same at short. Alfaro was 0-4 in game 6 with an error. In comes Concepcion to settle the defense. I don't want to lose game 7 due to an error. Brandt had a no-hitter and Blyleven had just allowed 2 hit after 3 innings when Whitaker drew a walk in the 4th and proceeded to steal 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. With the infield in, Castino hit a harmless grounder to Roy Howell and Blyleven struck out Brown to end the 4th. Still hitless in the 5th, Burroughs finally lined a single with 2 outs but that came to nothing. Spike f-ing Owen doubled to lead off the bottom half and Kelly Heath, who was 0-18 this postseason lined a single up the middle. Owen came around third but was cut down by a great thrown by Vernon Armstead for the 1st out. That was at the good news. The bad news is that with 2 outs, Redus took a Blyleven changeup deep to left and it was 2-0 Braves after 5. Concepcion led off the 5th with a walk, just his 29th in 500 plate appearances. I decided we had to try to get runs on the board and pinch hit Stafford for Blyleven, but he struck out looking. That brought up Briggs who was just hitting .133 this post-season playing through a rib injury. But he went with a fastball and went the other way over the left field wall and the game was tied. We brought in Busby in the 6th and induced Heath into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. When Conception blooped a 2-out double in the 7th, I pitch hit Steve Sax for Busby to try to give us the lead. And that he did, a liner to left and when Concepcion came around 3rd to score, and we were 9 outs away from a World Series win. It's 3-2. In came Lawrence Bashaw in the 7th to face a pinch hitter and then the top of the order. He struck out pinch hitter Ron Roenicke and got Redus and Maddox to fly out to left and we were 6 outs away. After we went down 1-2-3 in the 8th, Mickey Hatcher drew a leadoff walk to bring up Lou Whitaker, who popped out to left. Castino then lined out to right and with 2 outs, Brown lined a single to left to put men on 1st and 2nd and Owen came to the plate. I then made the decision to go to Al Holland and Owen struck out on a 3-2 pitch and we are 3 outs away. We didn't score in the top of the 9th and Holland would have to face #8, #9 and #1 to get us the title. He got Kelly Heath on 3 pitches, the last on a 98 MPH fast ball. On a 2-2 count, he got Brian Dayett on a 2-2 changeup and it was down to Gary Redus. On the first pitch he hit a grounded to Concepcion who threw him out and we won it! Lynn was the MVP and I won my 2nd title in my 13th year as manager. This one was great, all the moves I made in the series seemed to pay off. Nice

We had a few players gather post-season awards
Fred Lynn won his 3rd MVP, his first with the Angels after winning 2 with Montreal making him just the 2nd player to win MVP in both leagues. Ray Fontenot won the Cy Young with a 2.48 ERA. I was the only person who voted for Frank Viola for ROY after he went 15-7 and 2nd in ERA at 2.57, but John Kruk won it with .325/.411/.437 with 9 HR. In the NL Mike Marshall was a unanimous winner after winning the Triple Crown. Douglas Nelson won his 2nd Cy Young for Pittsburgh and Cal Ripken won the ROY with .295/.340/.450 and 13 HR. We have a few youngsters going to arbitration but none will be a problem. There are some really good UFA's, but I don't think I am going to go for any this year despite a larger budget. Our core is pretty locked in, but I want to find a way to off-load Burroughs large contract, I may need to use a decent prospect as a sweetener.

The Expos put Gene Richards on the block. He is 29 and will be a UFA next year, but he was 2nd in hitting in the NL, 1st in doubles and his 162 game avg over his career is .308/.366/.406 31 doubles 9 triples 100 runs 56 rbi 37 steals 5.1 WAR and an OPS of 120. So I acquired him along with a young arm who may or may pan out for our #4 starter and also pending UFA James Chamberlain, 23 year old Lennie Nay, who put together a nice season of 2.0 WAR as a rookie in 90 games and a young bullpen arm who will be a great closer or nothing, depends if he ever stops walking people. Our payroll goes up about $700,000, but thanks to the World Series win, we have the budget. Richards also has won 2 Gold Gloves, so our outfield defense should be stellar.

Here were the top 10 picks in the draft
1)Cleveland-Edgar Martinez (Did not sign. Yikes) 2)San Diego-Roger Clemons 3)Kansas City-Ellis Burks (Did not sign) 4)Cincinnati-Mike Greenwell 5)Minnesota-Duane Ward (Compensatory) 6)Minnesota-Bret Saberhagen 7)Seattle-Kevin Seitzer 8)Cincinnati-Ron Gant (Compensatory) 9)San Francisco-Wally Joyner 10)Yankees-Glenn Braggs When our pick came up at 24, the best player on the board was Glenallen Hill and our scout suggested him as well. He plays a position of strength, but I made our scout happy and went with Hill. He still has one of my 3 favorite HR's IRL. His swing here is so short and compact and to crush it over 500 feet still ranks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NiSpQPfmI4
