Chico Fernandez (1932 - 2016)
Chico Fernandez, the Cuban infielder who began his major league career with the Brooklyn Dodgers and finished it with the New York Mets, passed away on Saturday (June 11, 2016) following a stroke suffered on May 19. He was 84. In between his tours in the boroughs of New York, he played for the Phillies and Tigers. He was the first Latino to play for both Detroit and Philadelphia. As he told the Detroit Free Press, last year, “I am proud that I helped lay the foundation for the Latin players today. I can tell you that I went through some hell, but I just loved playing baseball.”
The dr.jteee image of Chico with the Phils is a personal favorite of mine. The image of an older Chico in a Detroit cap accompanied his obituary in the Detroit Free Press (as well as the 2015 piece referenced above). |

Bill Wolff 1902
On September 10th, 1902, Bill Wolff made his major league debut as the starting pitcher for the Phillies against the first-place Pirates in Philadelphia. He pitched a complete game, a 5-1 loss in which he allowed eleven hits, walked four, and hit a batter; he was 1-for-3 at the plate. Wolff did not pitch again that season, but he was back with the Phillies in spring training of 1903, when this photo was taken. He pitched in the preseason intercity series against the Athletics, but did not appear in any regular-season games that spring, and after his release in early May he pitched in the minor leagues with Peoria. His major-league career consisted of his one game in 1902. (Baseball-Reference does not indicate which hand he threw with; clearly he was a right-hander.) Considering Topps's "normally standard" alphabetical order, and his position, could this be Harvey Reagin (placed between Reardon and Ready), a Braves's catcher farmhand, ...but who played only one year of pro BB with the 1974 Greenville Braves???

Harvey? Why, there you are!
Forgive the obscure Jimmy Stewart movie reference.
Plausible that it's Harvey Reagin, but a) this matches a lot of images clearly identified as being Braves camp 1975, and b) he has to be 5'9" 170 and about 23 years old, and c) he has to have been released at the end of camp, 1975. I'm not convinced. He's wearing #55. We need a 1975 Braves' spring training scorecard. Efforting. |

Edit: I do hope this means there's a Braves image of Freddie V. in the Vault, as well. One of the unicorns I've been seeking. They got #55. Why not #54? Last edited by FatJack; 06-14-2016 at 07:02 PM. |

Doug McWilliams shot Velazquez for himself in a Braves uniform in Candlestick. Presumably did so for Topps too, but as I mentioned earlier the files after the letter "T" were a mess and U-Z negatives are thus even more random than the rest of the alphabet!

Arthur Nichols 1898
Art Nichols (apparently also known as Charley) began his major league career as a catcher with Chicago in the National League. He appeared in 14 games in 1898, 17 in 1899, and just 8 in 1900. In 1901 he was with the St. Louis Cardinals, and he played 47 games as a catcher and 40 more as an outfielder, and appeared in 93 games total. In 1902 he was primarily a first baseman, with 56 of his 73 games at first base. The same was true in 1903; he played 25 games at first out of 36 total, with two games behind the plate. His batting average that last season was just .192, and the Sporting Life of July 18th noted that he had been released. He never again played in the major leagues. The photo is from 1901.
