Merkle, you are the best at identifying these Topps pics, and are a real help to us all on this thread. But I have a real tough time here with your listing of KA 691-692 as Harry Dahl, comparing these 2 Topps images with one of Dahl from the TSN Collection Archives (Mears auctions), and 2 others from Kyle's Sportscards. Of course, these 3 are B&W, and I may be dead wrong, but still...And I have no clue on who it would be...

How rare is this? Dick Davis

After trolling your thread for weeks and learning the ropes about these Topps Vault updates, my old card collecting blood has been stirred because of photos -- excuse me, images -- like this KA 727 of Dick Davis.
According to Baseball-Reference, Davis was with Toronto for exactly one week (June 15-22) between stops in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
And if this is true, the Phillies traded him for Wayne Nordhagen. And the Pirates acquired him -- for Wayne Nordhagen! Apparently it was a three-team deal, Nordhagen going to Pittasburgh for Bill Robinson.
I guess I wonder if one can appreciate how rare something is when you didn't even realize it existed.
Long live the Vault!

Agree with the catch. Thanks, keonleafs, for raising the question about the Harry Dahl identification in the first place, and thanks, Buccos, for the revised identification. The B&W Bob Decker photo below was for sale on eBay back in 2011. Decker was on the Washington Senators' spring roster in 1963 and 1964.

Decker - you're right. I just kicked that. I've seen both of their 1965 negative files and switched them in my mind, never checked. Apologies.

And the Astro is the obscure Jesus De La Rosa

Mark DeJohn 1982

Obscure infielder - still in the game as a Cardinals instructor - whose major league debut came in his 12th pro season.

Steve Dalkowski 1963 (Kinda)

Everybody knows this extraordinary story; after years of epic minor league wildness (he had only two true outcomes: walks and strikeouts) Earl Weaver got a hold of him in 1962 and taught him to throw nothing but his rising fastball and slider.

Dalkowski had made the Orioles as a reliever in 1963 and was just tuning up against the Yankees in Florida when he threw the slider and something popped in his elbow. He never appeared in the majors, and within three years was out of the game and working as a migrant farm laborer.

The Dalkowski negative uploaded today was from the image Topps took in March, 1963 and used on his Rookie Card (he really had made it) and doubles the number of known color images of the pitcher who might have been the fastest of all-time (the other is a rough scan of a capless Topps image, it's shown below):

Art DeFilippis in 1977

Looks vaguely like Tom Dettore, the lefty of the Cubs of '74-75. But he doesn't exactly fit the alphabetical sequence (his last name should be a Dee or Def) and I see nothing suggesting Dettore was ever in camp with Cincinnati.

Sleuths?

(Mr. Lumpkin has, below, correctly ID'd this as the longtime Senator/Ranger lefty pitching prospect Art DeFilippis).

Mystery Red - Tony DeFrancesco?

Tony DeFrancesco was a right-handed catcher who was a non-roster invitee with the Reds in 1990.

Seems like the nose in the second photo is a pretty good match for the Topps Vault photo, and the mouth, when he is talking in the third photo, is also a pretty close match.

Can't explain why the Topps Vault photo shows him as a left-handed pitcher, unless he was clowning around.

Question About Joe DeLucia

Merkle, you have identified KA 735-736 as Joe DeLucia. I've been unable to figure out who that player was. Neither baseball-reference.com nor my newspaper searches have come up with anything on him. What position did he play? Do you know approximately what spring he was with the Dodgers? Thanks, in advance, for your help on this.

Joe DeLuise

Rule 1) never ID players while walking your dogs.

Rule 2) old mistakes by others are easier to repeat than making new ones yourself. In the Topps files this player was identified as Joe DeLucia and I assume when this gets posted on eBay the mistake will continue.

In fact he's Joe DeLuise, photographed in spring training 1966. He's also in the TSN Baseball Guide in 1969 as ERA champ of the California League in '68. Joseph DeLuise Register Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com

Also: I agree on DeFilippis. The lighting of the spring training shot fits with others from Reds 1977, not with Reds 1980.
