Cards news: Sept. 14 -- Starting pitcher Segura out two weeks with biceps injury
St. Louis Cardinals have learned starting pitcher Eric Segura will miss up to two weeks with biceps tendinitis, an injury he discovered after he was forced to leave the team's 7-6 victory over Miami on Sept. 14.
Acquired in a trade with Cleveland on July 18, the 26-year-old Segura has gone 4-4 in 10 starts with St. Louis this season with a 3.31 ERA. For the season, the right-hander is 11-7 in 29 starts with a 3.68 ERA. His place in the rotation will be taken by left-hander Yadiel Batista. Batista, 26, started the season in the Cardinals' bullpen before moving into the rotation. He had some early success, but later struggles resulted in him being sent to AAA Memphis. With the Cardinals, Batista was 6-8 with a 4.87 ERA in 29 games/20 starts. |

Cards news: Sept. 21 -- Labrum injury will end season for SP Showalter
The St. Louis Cardinals have learned right-handed pitcher Zach Showalter will miss the remainder of the regular season after he suffered a partially torn labrum during a 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Sept. 19.
Showalter, 27, is expected to be sidelined for three months. The right-hander joins fellow starting pitcher Eric Segura who may miss the rest of the regular season after suffering a biceps injury on Sept. 14. The team also is expecting a diagnosis on Sean Hermann, who left his Sept. 20 start against the Twins with an injury. In 24 starts this season, Showalter has gone 7-5 with a 3.86 ERA. His spot in the rotation will be taken by 25-year-old right-handed pitcher Phil Sandheinrich. Sandheinrich has made 26 starts at AAA Memphis this season, going 14-6 with a 3.04 ERA. In 2030, Sandheinrich made 20 starts for St. Louis and went 6-4 with a 4.94 ERA. |

Cards news: Sept. 23 -- Hamstring injury ends season for SP Sean Hermann
The list of injured St. Louis Cardinals starting pitchers continues to grow as the team has learned that right-handed starting pitcher Sean Hermann will miss the remainder of the regular season with a strained hamstring suffered in a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Sept. 20.
The 28-year-old Hermann is expected to be sidelined for six weeks. In 30 starts this season, Hermann has gone 9-11 with a 4.40 ERA. He will be replaced in the rotation by 27-year-old right-handed pitcher Ali Ascanio who has been called up from AAA Memphis. Ascanio, 27, started the season in the majors and in 18 starts went 4-6 with a 4.53 ERA. At AAA Memphis, he is 3-5 in 11 starts with a 6.22 ERA. The Cardinals also have learned that starting pitcher Eric Segura will miss at least another week as he recovers from a biceps injury. That means St. Louis will conclude its regular season with three -- Showalter, Segura and Hermann -- on the injured list even though it is just a half-game out of a playoff berth. |
