Bob Lillis 1958
Don't see a lot of him during his two-thirds of a season (1961) with the Cardinals between his longer tenures in LA and Houston.
Today's Topps uploads (KC) 941-942 Mason Lilley (Pirates system; tentative); 943-946 Bob Lillis; 947-948 Sixto Lezcano; 949-950 Johnny Lewis; 951-952 Darren Lewis; 953-954 Dennis Lewallyn; 955-958 Barry Lersch; 959-960 Don Leppert; 961-964 Lee Lacy; 965-968 Mike LaCoss; 969-972 Frank LaCorte; 973-974 Pete LaCock; 975-976 Lou Brock Last edited by Merkle923; 10-15-2016 at 03:18 PM. |

Dick Adams (1920 - 2016)
Dick Adams, who played first base (and a few games in the OF) for the 1947 Athletics, passed away September 14.
I know there's a solid image of Dick posted by tnfoto (courtesy thecatspajamas) earlier this year. I found this Kyle's offering on eBay, which I think is a little sharper. Obviously, the player on the left is Hank Biasatti. Dick, if I'm not mistaken, is the player in the middle and Ferris Fain is on the right. As a Rule V pick, Dick was with the Athletics for the entire season, but Fain, who was also a Rule V pick that year, got the 1B spot, relegating Dick to the minors in 1948. Dick ended his pro career after the '53 season, but never got back to the major leagues. |

Frank Thomas 1951
His meanderings in the final two years of his career (mid-1964 to mid-1966) were poorly chronicled by photographers, but here are two new entries I tripped over recently.
There's one MLB-licensed color shot of Thomas from his infamous Phillies stint (1964-65) so this portrait is new. All things considered it's not bad considering it was produced on newsprint for the opening day spread in The Philadelphia Inquirer. The second image is a little more dicey, of Thomas with the 1966 Atlanta Braves (for whom he never actually played, being released on April 5). This is a small picture from an early-season Atlanta scorecard and features the confusing "Fat A" logo which the team never wore. It occurred to me as I scanned this one that I think I finally understand why these "Fat A" photos exist: I've never seen one of a player who was not with the Braves in Milwaukee in 1965 (including a sample of about 20-25 of these thumbnails in that '66 program). I suspect these guys were all photographed in Milwaukee late in the '65 season in anticipation of the much-contested franchise move that winter. Back to Thomas: there are a couple of black-and-white snapshots of him with the '65 Astros, taken on a rainy day in the Shea Stadium dugout. But I've never seen him in Houston garb in color, and never seen anything of him that definitely dates to his career-ending stint with the 1966 Cubs (there are plenty from his first tenure there, 1960-61). KC 942 Mason Lilley?
This is merely a guess based on 1) a surname starting with Li... 2) KC 941 is in a pitcher's pose, and 3) the era of the Pirates' uniform in the two photos. Raymond M. "Mason" Lilley was a pitcher who was a non-roster invitee with the Pirates in 1972. The only photo I've found of him is the attached fuzzy one showing him as a Little League coach in North Carolina 26 years after his spring appearance with the Pirates. I can see some resemblance between the two, but it's difficult to verify.

The rare photos where the attitude of the head and the expression match across the decades. Since he's the only possible alphabetical match, I'll put him in tentatively and we'll see for sure when Topps puts the shot up on eBay. Nice research!

Frank Thomas images circa 1966-67
My equipment doesn't blow up tiny images very well, but others might be able to take advantage of the fact that Frank Thomas is in the Braves' 1966 team photo, in the middle of the second row wearing No. 39. One reason I entertain hope that true color shots of him with Atlanta might exist. I commissioned a colorized pose of Thomas kneeling. The hat is either an authentic "A" or a very good airbrush. It is not the same pose as THIS.
I have a color image of Thomas batting with the Phillies I feel Is a Brace, but I have become wary of posting images here whose origins are less than clear. Most recently, I've seen it for sale from Bucks County Baseball Cards. |

MISSING Player Thomas Ryder 1884 St. Louis Maroons (UA)
I've located a photo from the obituary of Thomas Ryder which appeared in the July 19, 1935 Dubuque Telegraph Herald. He was a lifelong resident of Dubuque and played for the 1884 St. Louis Maroons.

Jocko Halligan 1891
Perhaps a slight upgrade to the facepack, which is awfully small. Here is Halligan pictured with the 1902 Jersey City Skeeters.

Frank Thomas
The Milwaukee head shot is a Brace from his first tenure in Milwaukee (1961) and the Philly batting pose is the one in Connie Mack Stadium that I referenced above (1964 or 1965).
