Yet more Jay Klevin. At this point, he's got twice as many Vault shots as he had major league at bats.

Dave Van Gorder
For some reason, the Reds let him wear #24 in 1982, a number that had belonged to Tony Perez for a dozen years before and would be Tony's after as well. The number has since been retired, of course.

Missing Player William Kinsler 1893 New York Giants
I've located a photo of William Kinsler, who played briefly with the 1893 New York Giants. He was long-time member of the New York Police Department.
The article details his refusal to take a $10,000 bribe and appeared in the April 4, 1905 New York Evening Telegraph. |

Help ID 1879 Washington Player
Early this year, I was able to find pretty good images of the 1879 Washington Nationals. On the back of the photograph, somebody scribbled IDs of the players and all match up with the early roster of this team except for this player, entitled "John White." There is no player on the roster by that name, and the only player not pictured that was a starter is Amos Booth. I can't tell from the very sketchy facepack photo if this guy is him, but it sure would be nice if it was.

Flair was in camp with the Phillies in the spring of 1948. The Phillies felt they were weak at first base and brought in a whole bunch of people to compete for the job. Ultimately, they traded for Dick Sisler of the Cardinals to fill the position. I do not know if Flair was an invite, a Rule V thing, or whether they purchased him from New Orleans and then sold him back, But the fact remains that he played for New Orleans in both '47 and '48, even though the club changed affiliations between the two years, which implies to me that, by that point, he was property of New Orleans and not Boston.

Sen. Valentine and Sen. Casanova…such a Romantic pair
Quote:
If any of you happens to be the other person alive who's read Kiss It Goodbye (WTOP's Shelby Whitfield's account of the Senators' final years in DC), you'll know why the picture of Casanova as a Senator is always good for a giggle. Along with the beloved memory of one of the greatest quotes of all time: "You don't know! And you're my teammates…you should know!" (About his losing a certain…contest to Orlando McFarlane. Casanova felt the Senators had definitive information about him that should have won him the vote… ![]() |

Max Venable in 1988; Rick Waits in 1986
Two interesting Topps Vault items: shots of veteran major leaguers with teams for which they never played. Max Venable went to the Orioles as a free agent in '88 but was dropped in spring training; Rick Waits was in the Giants' camp in '86 but wound up drifting back to the PCL for one last pro season.
Tuesday's Topps uploads (KD) 341-342 Ozzie Virgil (SR.), 343-344 Ozzie Virgil Jr.; 345-346 Don Vesling (P, Detroit system); 347-348 John Verhoeven; 349-352 Max Venable; 353-354 Otto Velez; 355-356 Rafael Vasquez; 357-358 George Vasquez (C, Milwaukee system); 359-360 Pete Varney; 361-362 Harry Walker; 363-364 Duane Walker; 365-366 Bob Walk; 367-370 Rick Waits; 371-372 Rick Waits; 373-374 Pete Vuckovich; 375-376 John Vukovich; 377-378 George Vukovich; 379-380 Omar Vizquel; Last edited by Merkle923; 11-01-2016 at 07:36 PM. |
