Merry Christmas #1: Joe Rudi 1967
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I was recently able to obtain the production remnants of the photo sets made by Dexter Press as part of a Coca-Cola/MLB promotion in 1966-67-68. There were literally dozens of images of players and others not appearing in any Dexter set, and I gave a preview of one of only two posed shots I've ever seen of Salty Parker from his tenure with the Mets, which saw him end the season as interim manager.
There are quite a few jaw-droppers in there, and this is as appropriate a time as any to show them off. As indicated, this is Joe Rudi in camp with the '67 A's, for whom he would make his major league debut on April 11. I've never before seen a color shot of Rudi in a Kansas City cap. In this one, we also see why the Dexter cards all seem to show the players in inexplicably cropped, hands-crossed-at-the-waist poses: they're not holding their hands at all: they're holding an ID slate! More to come. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 12:45 AM. |

Also...the Dexter shots look like the shots used on the contest cards that Atlantic Oil put out in '68 at their gas stations. Are they the same pics? Last edited by SDL; 12-23-2016 at 04:12 AM. |

Can't say definitively whether Dexter photographed everybody in each camp, but there's no image of Driscoll, sorry. Plenty elsewhere of him.

The rarities are wonderful and I'm glad you're prioritizing them. That said, these fuller versions (holding the slate) would be worth having, IMO, even on players who were included in the regular sets. If you get the chance, of course. And again, thanks. |

Btw, I was looking up Brooks at B-R (to be sure he was still playing in '77) and I (re-?)discovered that his middle name is "Calbert". Which makes it rather appropriate that he played his entire career in Baltimore, given that the state of Maryland was originally a Crown Colony granted by Charles II to Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore. It's like Hayden Penn pitching 20 years for the Phillies, or somebody named "Oglethorpe" having a Hall of Fame career in Atlanta, I suppose. Last edited by Amazin69; 12-23-2016 at 03:31 PM. |

Vault Upgrades Available
Lew Burdette (BA281) almost has a 3-D look to it restored. My humble holiday offering to you all... Several of you, rightly or wrongly, have blamed me for Baseball-Birthdays' premature withdrawal of his OneDrive page that held all of the Topps Vault folders. This was a blow to me, whether you believe it or not, as we helped him with a number of the newer folders. If it was meant somehow as punishment, I don't get why he reacted so strongly – I attempted to reach him by direct email twice and two different accounts. He has still not responded personally to me. I thought it was worth it to illustrate how special the upgrades were. One remarkable fact is that almost none of them are Cubs. That tells me they were done separately and those images found their destination apart from my digging. If some does in fact have early Cubs images upgraded, I respectfully request they share them with the group. I offer to be the middle man. Since then, I have gone back to all of these Folders, which I saved before their removal, and have created “Upgrade Folders,” the number of images in each older photo that have been largely restored. I am also making them available to those collectors who want to upgrade their files. I offer these free and without strings; all anyone has to do is contact me in a PM, tell me what they want and where to send it. I also have the complete folders saved and upgraded. The offer goes to those as well. Here is a list of folders that contain upgrades and the number of images upgraded: FOLDER ABC (499 images upgraded); AC (123); AD (206); AE (181); AF (157); AH (86); AJ (89); AK (189); AL (106); AM (206); AN (174); AP (62); AX (2). BA (522); BC (309); BE (1); BF (24); BH (6); BJ (5); BK (6); BT (61). CA (43); CC (264); DD (270); HH (64); PP (9); TT (73); UU (57). Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. |

Merry Christmas #2: Willie Montanez 1966
It's not as well known as the '67 and '68 issues but Dexter started with a set of Angels postcards in 1966. In addition to showcasing a lot of guys who don't appear otherwise in color in the first full season of the "CA"-capped "California" team name, there are all these other players they shot.
Most who can recall baseball in the '70s know that Willie Montanez was one of those guys - like Cecil Cooper - whom somebody was smart enough to grab in the Rule V draft, but not smart enough to keep. The Angels saw something in his 87 plate appearances as a 17-year old for the Cardinals' Gulf Coast League Rookie League team in 1965 to take the gamble on him. But though the pre-1968 roster rules permitted teams to keep 28 men until a final cutdown about May 15, the Angels missed the boat on Montanez completely. He would be no superstar, but his contemporaneous reputation was as a fancy-dan first baseman with good if not great power (a .729 career OPS but an OPS+ of 102 suggests he was a pretty good player). But Bill Rigney used him twice as a pinch-hitter, six times as a pinch-runner, and only let him play a total of one inning in two appearances at first base. They sent him back to the Cardinals on May 5, 1966. Montanez, of course, would be involved in another strange transaction four years when the Cards sent him to Philly as compensation for Curt Flood's world-changing refusal to report to the Phillies after the Dick Allen/Tim McCarver trade. (As a postscript I should note that there are at least two Montanez/Angels images taken by George Brace, and one of them has been sold as an autographed item, but I think we can agree this is just far better work. Additionally, if anybody has a good color shot of Montanez during his 1980 tenure in San Diego - other than the slightly blurry Brace - I'd appreciate them posting it). Ted Abernathy 1955 By Request
This is not from the Dexter group, but from that 2015 collection acquisition I'm still sorting through - Abernathy in camp with the '68 Reds, at Fort Lauderdale Stadium, Florida.
