1974 Topps

I know the subject of this question is not the subject of this forum, but it seems to me that the folks here would have the best chance of knowing the answer as anyone. So please forgive the side-track nature of the inquiry. Replies can be via personal message if you like to keep the forum clean.

Anyway, I am going back over the 1974 Topps set. Can someone provide a discussion on the production of that set, which explains the lingering questions about the Washington variations - Why only on 3 printing sheets? What's up with the Freisleben? How could it have happened if all the cards were printed and distributed at the same time without resulting in scarcities? Did Topps intend to only use those 3 sheets and was Freisleben an errant 'oops'?

Many thanks, and again, sorry for the diversion.

Norm Larker 1958

In the most recent Topps upload, the unlikely runner-up to Dick Groat for the 1960 National League batting championship is shown in his last stop, in the last two months of his career, with the 1963 Giants. Not very common in that uniform.

I don't think there's even a lot of him in black and white in this uniform.

For the sake of clarity here are the KE uploads since the last clean inventory: 321-322 Don Taussig; 323-324 Willard Schmidt; 325-326 Seth Morehead; 327-328 Joe Cunningham; 329-330 Mario Guerrero; 331-332 Joe Orsulak; 333-334 Ferguson Jenkins; 335-336 Jeff Ransom; 337-338 Bert Blyleven; 339-340 Greg Shanahan; 341-342 Burke Suter http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...=suter-001wil; 343-344 Al Schroll; 345-346 Jose Pena; 347-348 Carl Nichols; 349-350 Walt Adey http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...=adey--001wal; 351-352 Vince Valentini http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...=valent001vin; 353-354 Sal Maglie; 355-356 Duke Maas; 357-360 Mike Fiore; 361-362 Elvin Tappe; 363-364 Ray Semproch; 365-366 Frank Sullivan; 367 Norm Larker; 369 Roy Sievers; 370-371 Jim Landis; 372 Dave Tobik; 373-374 Billy Hitchcock; 375-376 Ron LeFlore; 377-378 Jim Hardin; 379-380 Roger Nelson; 381-420 NFL/AFL.

Veteran White Sox center fielder made five stops in his last three years; images of him in a Cleveland uniform (1966) are rare and worth a post.

Roger Nelson 1967

Another star-crossed righty who fought injuries and expectations. His 1972 season in Kansas City saw him lead the AL in Strikeouts to Walks ratio and (if it had been compiled then) WHIP. That led the Reds to trade for him but injuries would limit him to 28 games in two years in Cincinnati - and few good images.

Fred Valentine 1959

More from the Dexter pile - first ever shot of Fred Valentine I've seen in the 1968-style red Washington uniforms.

To answer a few questions on these: no Alomar (the Mets shoot includes Derrell Griffith, for whom Houston traded Alomar). I'll get a list up of the teams included in the next few days.

I am pretty sure 351-352 is former Cubs 1st rounder and 7th overall pick Herman Neils Segelke who pitched in 3 games for the 1982 Cubs....I like to research where these "obscure" players are now and, like some of you, have also found these players and sent them a attachment of their TV cards...But, in this case, my research told a very unfortunate story on "Rocket" Segelke as he is now a 430 pound man with a very disappointing life... if you choose to google his name you can see for yourself....

EDIT- This ended up being former Cubs farmhand Vince Valentini ....Cubs Segelke will have to wait

After looking at some minor league photos I am pretty sure that is Segelke. What an ugly, sad story his life has been since his baseball days.

1974 Topps

To explain briefly why there were only "Washington" variations for only half of the 1974 San Diego cards:

Though in 1973 Topps had test-marketed in Florida and other places selling the entire 660-card set all at once, they still didn't have to print and distribute them all at the same time. Most 1973 cards were printed and sold and shipped in five series spread across the spring and early summer.

1974 would be the first time Topps tried to move out nearly all the cards at the same time - and evidently it didn't go well. They started preparing the set late in the baseball season of 1973 in the wake of the May announcement that the Padres had been sold to DC interests. But there were widespread efforts in San Diego to keep the club and rumors that the city would sue to keep them.

Topps approached this carefully. Proof sheets of the 1974 set show no Washington cards. The proofs probably were printed in mid-to-late October (they also list Glenn Beckert with the Cubs and Jerry Morales with the Padres; they were traded for one another on November 7 and all issued cards reflect the trade). It was after the proofs were produced - with "San Diego" on all of them - that the National League voted on December 6 to approve the sale and relocation of the Padres to Washington.

Topps was either already printing the 1974 cards, or about to. Somebody quickly changed the "San Diego" cards to "Washington" - presumably addressing only the first part of the printing job (cards numbered 1-396). As soon as that had happened, the city of San Diego sued, Ray Kroc stepped up to save the Padres, and the Washingtons were changed back into San Diegos. Having spent part of that March in Florida I can tell you that I found the Washington variations in the cellophane-wrapped packs but only San Diegos in the regular wax packs. Back in New York a week later I found no Washingtons.

That Washington variations numbered between 265-396 are scarcer than those numbered between 1-264 suggests that there was indeed some kind of staggered printing process and that the decision to revert to San Diego literally came after a lot of the first two sheets had been printed but while the third one was still rumbling through the presses.

The explanation of the Freisleben variations is lost in the folds of history. Guesses range from some pre-proof mockup stage in which every Padre was listed as Washington and that one just slipped through uncorrected, to the idea that somebody at Topps panicked and made the change at the last minute when they saw the famous photos of the one and only 1974 Washington Nationals uniform - worn by the very same Dave Freisleben. The two San Diego variations are simply an editor's style correction.

Ralph Weigel, 1946 Cleveland Indians - the image is a cleaned sample taken from a scan of a recently bought/sold wirephoto and it fills a slot on the UIN list.

Until the time of his passing, Johnny Rutherford was listed as being in a tie with Bob Cerv for the 41st oldest living major leaguer. Both were born on May 5, 1925 (91 yrs., 7 1/2 mos. of age).
Although Rutherford played in the majors only one season (1952) it was a fairly active year. He pitched 97 innings in 22 games, going 7-7 with a 4.25 earned run average. He had 2 Saves, 11 starts and 4 Complete Games. He also pitched in relief of Joe Black in Game 4 of the 1952 World Series (a 2-0 Dodgers loss to the New York Yankees).

Tommy Davis 1959

Some more Dexter magic. One year you're banging out 230 hits and driving home 153 runs, the next you're winning a second straight batting championship, two years later you break your ankle and the next thing you know you've been traded, sold, released, signed or drafted ten times in six years.

There are some shots of Davis from his one year with the White Sox (1968), nearly all of them in the road blues and none of them as nice as this.

After giving it a 2nd look, and comparing with prior TV pics of Segelke with the Giants (MiLB 1983-84, after his tenure with the Cubs), and also with his Cubs minor league card that Bearman posted earlier in this thread, I have serious doubts about his ID. Here is the Cubs player at ke351, and 3 Segelke pics.

Luis Quinones 1983

Happy new year to everyone. Found this photo of Luis Quinones on eBay being sold by andy1921. Quinones has not yet emerged from the Vault with any team, but no card was issued of him with his first team, the Athletics.

Brace shot him, perhaps this is that. Dealer also has a 1973 Met I've never met, Greg Harts. Sketchy photo but it is autographed.
