More News Hit Parade: DeMontreville Gets Cycle Saturday, October 8th, 1904: "To hit for the cycle" is one of the rarest of feats in a baseball game. This occurs when a player hits a single, double, triple and home run in the same game, getting every type of hit possible. Lee DeMontreville grabbed a piece of baseball history today when he hit for the cycle. DeMontreville went 4 for 5 with 3 runs batted in and 3 runs scored against St. Louis, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-0 win at Robison Field. "I felt comfortable at the plate in a way I haven't felt all season," DeMontreville said after the game. "It was like they were throwing beach balls at me. The ball seemed that big to me. And it just floated in." Lee DeMontreville singled in the 1st, hit a two-run double in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Jack Chesbro in the 5th, tripled in the 7th and flied out in the 9th. Thus far this season in 120 games DeMontreville is batting .292 with 1 home run, 67 RBIs and 68 runs scored. He has 138 hits in 472 at-bats. NABL News: Playoffs begin
Tuesday, October 11th, 1904: What began months ago as a dream is now reality. The trade deadline has passed, along with all the GMs' wheeling and dealing. Contract negotiations are on hold until another time. Front office work is all but on the back burner. Now it's time for each club, player, coach and manager to put a unique imprint on North American BaseBall League history. Nobody will remember the free agent who got away last winter. No one will care about the trade that fell through right before the deadline. People will remember just one thing about the playoffs -- the team that wins the North American Series crown. That's the reason they play the game. The North American Series starts today with these match-ups: Boston Beaneaters versus Washington Senators. Boston at Washington Game 1 Wednesday 10/12 Weldon Henley (21-16, 3.26) vs Christy Mathewson (30-16, 3.06) Washington 6 Boston 5: Nap Lajoie hits a ninth inning pinch hit HR (1) Game 2 Thursday 10/13 Bob Ewing (13-13, 3.59) vs Cy Young (21-17, 3.14) Washington 8 Boston 2: John Otten hits a 5th inning three run HR (1). Bill Kemmer adds another solo shot (1) Washington at Boston Game 3 Saturday 10/15 Noodles Hahn (6-4, 3.38) vs Wiley Piatt (15-20, 4.09) Washington 6 Boston 1: Joe Bean goes 4-4 with a solo HR (1), and drives in three. Game 4 Sunday 10/16 Christy Mathewson (0-0, 0.00) vs Weldon Henley (0-0, 5.40) Boston 3 Washington 1: Homer Smoot 2-4, 2 RBIs. Game 5 Monday 10/17 Cy Young (1-0, 0.00) vs Bob Ewing (0-1, 9.00) Washington 11 Boston 2: John Otten and Nap Lajoie hits HRs, each their 2nd of the series. Senators Triumph in 1904 North American Series Monday, October 17th, 1904: At South End Grounds III today Washington outclassed the Boston Beaneaters 11-2 and won the North American BaseBall League North American Series for the 2nd time in its club history. MVP was SS Joe Bean (.529, 1 HR, 5 RBIs.) Offseason Senators Retirements Ed Stein (P) 8-14, 4.52. Dan Daub (P) Jim Garry (P) Fred Underwood (P) Awards NL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced Saturday, October 29th, 1904: On the defensive side of the game pitchers always get the glory, but the best pitchers know their success hinges on the gloves behind them. The defensive dream team in the National League for 1904 has been announced, and the Glove Wizard Award trophies will be presented to these outstanding fielders: Pitcher: Frank Smith (New York Giants) Catcher: Johnny Kling (St. Louis Cardinals) First Baseman: Jiggs Donahue (Boston Beaneaters) Second Baseman: Johnny Evers (St. Louis Cardinals) Third Baseman: Sammy Strang (Brooklyn Superbas) Shortstop: Terry Turner (New York Giants) Left Fielder: Topsy Hartsel (Pittsburgh Pirates) Center Fielder: Fielder Jones (Cincinnati Reds) Right Fielder: Chick Stahl (Chicago Cubs) Season's Best Fielders Selected by AL Saturday, October 29th, 1904: What does it take to win a Glove Wizard Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the American League consists of: Pitcher: Deacon Phillippe (New York Highlanders) Catcher: Ed Phelps (Detroit Tigers) First Baseman: Willie Clark (New York Highlanders) Second Baseman: Nap Lajoie (Washington Senators) Third Baseman: Jimmy Collins (Chicago White Sox) Shortstop: Joe Tinker (Boston Americans) Left Fielder: Jesse Burkett (Philadelphia Athletics) Center Fielder: Charlie Frisbee (Philadelphia Athletics) Right Fielder: Chief Sockalexis (Washington Senators) Magee Is NL's #1 Rookie Sunday, October 30th, 1904: His rookie season has paid off well for Sherry Magee of the Cardinals. He has hit the jackpot. The 20-year-old left fielder topped off his fine first season with the 1904 National League Newcomer of the Year Award. It was a season to remember for the Cardinals newcomer. He wrapped up his inaugural year with a .331 batting average, 33 doubles, 38 triples and 9 home runs. Magee also had 119 RBIs and scored 126 times. Lumley This Year's Best Rookie Sunday, October 30th, 1904: The American League Newcomer of the Year Award honoree has been picked for 1904 and the winner is St. Louis right fielder Harry Lumley. The talented Browns right fielder took the trophy by hitting .321 in 152 games this season and finishing with 207 hits, 9 home runs, 147 RBIs and 131 runs scored. St. Louis Pitcher Racks Up Outstanding Pitcher Award Tuesday, November 1st, 1904: Jack Chesbro of the St. Louis Cardinals had a fine 21-16 season in 1904 and today claimed the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award. He started 39 times, threw 325.2 innings while collecting 125 strikeouts and fashioned a 2.76 ERA. Chesbro allowed only 327 hits, 74 walks and a .255 opponents' batting average. AL Names Mathewson Outstanding Pitcher Award Winner Tuesday, November 1st, 1904: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1904 has been presented and the American League winner is Christy Mathewson of Washington. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Mathewson. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Senators star told reporters. Mathewson excelled with an impressive 30-16 record in 50 starts. In 404.1 innings he yielded 415 hits and 111 walks, while striking out 202 and compiling a fine 3.07 ERA. Standout Season For Freeman, Wins AL Outstanding Hitter Award Wednesday, November 2nd, 1904: Buck Freeman has been around North American BaseBall League enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 1904 season, he's taking home the Outstanding Hitter Award in the American League. The Detroit first baseman put up a batting average of .347 with 41 doubles, 38 triples, 15 home runs and 131 RBIs. Bresnahan Heads NL Best Batter List Wednesday, November 2nd, 1904: Philadelphia's Roger Bresnahan put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 1904 National League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 25-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .359 average, picking up 204 hits, 40 doubles, 20 triples, 5 home runs and 122 RBIs, while scoring 125 runs. Draft NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Tuesday, November 1st, 1904: In the few hours remaining until the draft begins today, GMs across North American BaseBall League will be penned up in their offices, making hurried last minute notes about each of their most coveted prospects. Fearful that things won't go as planned, many of them are still playing through the myriad scenarios that are all but certain to unfold in the high-stakes lottery of drafting. Scouting teams play devil's advocate, argue strategy back and forth and try to help their general manager gain the strategic upper hand, even though they know a lot of what transpires today will come down to being in the right place at the right time. BNN projects that the top picks of the draft will be: 1. Frank LaPorte, 24 year-old second baseman out of college. 2. Irv Young, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Buster Brown, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Bill Hinchman, 21 year-old left fielder out of college. 5. Ed Reulbach, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Eddie Cicotte, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Lefty Leifield, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. Orval Overall, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Charlie Chech, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Ty Cobb, 17 year-old center fielder out of high-school. The top 5 players Cincinnati Reds pick Orval Overall Boston Americans pick Ty Cobb ![]() St Louis Browns pick Ed Cicotte NY Giants pick Ed Reulbach Detroit Tigers pick Irv Young Senators draft Rick Adams (MR) Ernie Baker (MR) Charlie Gibson (C) Other News NABL News: Free Agents File Saturday, November 12th, 1904: Today is the first day of the free agency period. With the arrival of free agency comes the opportunity for each club across North American BaseBall League to propel themselves into the playoffs simply by making a few shrewd, well-calculated signings. General managers have to choose wisely where to spend their dollars. An expensive signing could be the key to a playoff spot or it could handcuff a franchise for years to come. This year's key free agents include: 1. Frank O'Connor, 34 year-old starting pitcher 2. Ed Doheny, 30 year-old starting pitcher 3. Elmer Flick, 28 year-old right fielder 4. Andy Dunning, 33 year-old starting pitcher 5. Rube Waddell, 28 year-old starting pitcher 6. Ad Gumbert, 36 year-old starting pitcher 7. Bill Dinneen, 28 year-old starting pitcher 8. Ned Garvin, 30 year-old starting pitcher 9. Red Donahue, 31 year-old starting pitcher 10. Harry Howell, 27 year-old starting pitcher Season Accomplishments Freddy Parent goes 6-6 Buck Freeman, Solly Hofman, Frank Foutz, and Lee DeMontreville each hit for the cycle. Bill Vinton 400 wins and 4000th strike out. Jessee Burkett 2500th hit. Cy Young 250th win. Harry Wolverton 28 game hitting streak.

Pop Foster Wins 1905 NL Batting Crown Monday, October 9th, 1905: With another season in the books, the 1905 National League batting title has been awarded to Cincinnati left fielder Pop Foster. He put up a .385 batting average, recording 218 hits in 566 at-bats. Foster's numbers included 24 doubles, 20 triples, 15 home runs, 118 RBIs and 105 runs scored. This year's batting champ appeared in 149 games. Cy Seymour Wins 1905 AL Batting Title Monday, October 9th, 1905: The league batting title is awarded each year to the one player that is able to separate himself, even if only by a single hit, from the rest of the hitters in the league. This year, the player to do that was Washington's center fielder Cy Seymour. He hit American League pitching at a .373 pace over 154 games to take home the 1905 edition of the award. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Monday, October 2nd, 1905: For the entrants in this year's rookie draft, released today by the league, the possibilities are endless. Some will immediately seize their opportunity to play in the bigs with a venom, doggedly working their way up through the system to arrive on the pro circuit in three to five years, if they are lucky. Others will struggle, have their hopes dashed, reborn and dashed again, all the while not fully giving up on the dream. Still others will take each day as it comes, while not losing sight of the end-game. They will figure it out, quietly work their way into the professional ranks and have solid, if not spectacular careers in North American BaseBall League. At any rate, teams now can scout the draft pool for the next 30 days. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Orval Overall, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Art Fromme, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Glenn Liebhardt, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Vive Lindaman, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 5. Ed Willett, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Fred Beebe, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Babe Adams, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. Eddie Collins, 18 year-old shortstop out of high-school. 9. Tom Hughes, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Johnny Bates, 23 year-old center fielder out of college. NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 9th, 1905: To win the North American BaseBall League title is the zenith of any baseball career. Players on postseason qualifiers will get the chance of a lifetime beginning today with the North American Series, where both heroes and goats will arise, but only one team will emerge as the North American Series champion. The playoffs are a time for managers to map out pitching and batting match-ups and on-the-field strategy. Rivalries soar to new heights and destiny's fickle finger holds the fate of the teams and players. The North American Series begin today. The teams will tangle in elimination series to determine who will move on to the next round in the quest for the Holy Grail of NABL baseball. The playoffs get underway with these games: New York Highlanders vs Brooklyn Superbas. This will be the first cross town championship series in the history of the North American BaseBall League.

Brooklyn is the North American BaseBall League Champions for 1905. They did it with a 4-0 triumph to capture the series 4-2. "Both clubs are talented. We just made fewer mistakes than they did," the winning manager said to the press corps at the postgame press conference. "We made the crucial plays and got the timely hits." The New York skipper agreed with that assessment and added, "We were a little weak on fundamentals at crucial times. I have a sneaky suspicion we will be working on fundamentals a lot next spring." On the way to the North American Series championship, the Superbas ended up in first place in the National League and compiled a 93-61 record during the regular season. MVP was Frank Foutz (.440, HR, 11 RBIs.)

Awards AL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced Sunday, October 29th, 1905: Who are the Glove Wizard Award winners? They are the guys that steal outs. They make spectacular plays, but they also consistently make the routine plays. This year in the American League these defensive stalwarts made a name for themselves with their gloves: Pitcher: Tully Sparks (St. Louis Browns) Catcher: Frank Chance (St. Louis Browns) First Baseman: Joe Kelley (New York Highlanders) Second Baseman: Nap Lajoie (Washington Senators) Third Baseman: Jimmy Collins (Chicago White Sox) Shortstop: Joe Tinker (Boston Americans) Left Fielder: Jesse Burkett (Detroit Tigers) Center Fielder: Charlie Frisbee (Philadelphia Athletics) Right Fielder: Chief Sockalexis (Washington Senators) NL Honors Outstanding Fielders Sunday, October 29th, 1905: The Glove Wizard Award winners don't get the recognition of the home run hitters, but they are very much appreciated by managers, their teammates and by the fans, who know the value of defensive excellence. Great defense makes a difference in baseball. This year's top glovemen in the National League are: Pitcher: Weldon Henley (Boston Beaneaters) Catcher: Ed McFarland (Pittsburgh Pirates) First Baseman: Tom McCreery (Cincinnati Reds) Second Baseman: Johnny Evers (St. Louis Cardinals) Third Baseman: Bill Bradley (Pittsburgh Pirates) Shortstop: Honus Wagner (Brooklyn Superbas) Left Fielder: Sherry Magee (St. Louis Cardinals) Center Fielder: Emmet Heidrick (Cincinnati Reds) Right Fielder: Chick Stahl (Chicago Cubs) 1905 NL Best Newcomer Named Monday, October 30th, 1905: Lefty Leifield's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Philadelphia Phillies and today he walked away with the 1905 National League Newcomer of the Year Award. The 22-year-old starter registered a 16-19 record this season in 39 starts. Over 309.1 innings he gave up 363 hits, struck out 92 and issued 92 walks as he held the opposition to a .288 batting average and fashioned a 3.14 ERA. Chase Is AL's Premier Rookie Monday, October 30th, 1905: It was a lot of headlines and highlights for St. Louis first baseman Hal Chase in his first season in the American League. It was annonced today that the 22-year-old was voted the top newcomer and had earned the Newcomer of the Year Award. Hal Chase collected 228 hits, 6 home runs, 106 RBIs, 13 walks and 122 runs scored. He hit .323 and had a .332 on-base percentage. Americans Pilot Nichols Picked as AL's Best Tuesday, October 31st, 1905: The Boston Americans had an outstanding season, much of it due to their astute and gifted skipper. For his managerial excellence, Tricky Nichols reaped the reward of being voted American League Manager of the Year. "A manager is only as good as the players he's managing," Nichols told reporters. "If I didn't have the talent to work with, making all the right moves wouldn't have helped a bit." Under Nichols the Americans finished second in the American League with a record of 84-70. National League Chooses Best Manager Tuesday, October 31st, 1905: Al Bauer celebrated a successful season with the Brooklyn Superbas by hosting team officials and select media at a Brooklyn area first-class eatery. But, when he first came to town, the 1905 National League Manager of the Year would've been lucky to be invited out for beers with the ground-crew. "Very few people believed in our ballclub, when I got here. It just goes to show you that a bunch of talented ballplayers playing together can make any old manager a genius," a modest Bauer joked, not fully recognizing his own stature in the baseball community. However, baseball journalists duly noted his managerial skill as he skippered the Superbas to a 93-61 record this year and a first place finish in the National League. Howell Picked Best NL Pitcher Wednesday, November 1st, 1905: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1905 has been presented and the National League winner is Harry Howell of Boston. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Howell. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Beaneaters star told reporters. Howell excelled with an impressive 26-11 record in 40 starts. In 346 innings he yielded 342 hits and 78 walks, while striking out 135 and compiling a fine 2.89 ERA. It's Bob Wicker, this year's American League Outstanding Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Wicker compiled a 25-11 record in 39 starts, tallied 117 strikeouts in 313.2 innings and recorded a 2.84 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .255 batting average against him. 1905 Premier Batter Selected By NL Thursday, November 2nd, 1905: Brooklyn's Honus Wagner put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 1905 National League Outstanding Hitter Award. It had already been a very special season for Washington's Cy Seymour, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake. The deal is awaiting confirmation from the league office but neither team expects any hang-ups. "It took longer than expected," said one GM, "but we knew that the deal was going to happen." Major News It's Official: C Bresnahan Signs with Senators Friday, January 12th, 1906: Roger Bresnahan finalized an accord with the Senators this morning, agreeing to $52,220 over 7 years. 1906 Season
Preseason Predictions
Detroit Deals McGraw to Washington for Gillen Friday, February 16th, 1906: You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you find a deal anyway. The Baseball News Network is reporting that Detroit and Washington have made a swap with 32-year-old third baseman John McGraw and 22-year-old left fielder Tommy Madden being shipped to the Senators and in return the Tigers would get 38-year-old shortstop Sam Gillen. The Washington general manager said the two sides were close to a blockbuster trade before agreeing upon a smaller scale transaction. "This is just a bit of housekeeping compared to what we wanted to do," he said. "I won't name names, but the potential deal we were close to making would have certainly grabbed some headlines." A source inside the Detroit organization said the two sides might not be done dealing, and another transaction could be in the works. In his career McGraw has hit .326 with 2118 hits, 289 doubles, 89 triples and 22 home runs. His totals also include 898 RBIs and 1414 runs scored. Lifetime in 1000 games Gillen is batting .274 with 7 home runs and 449 RBIs. NO HITTER. ![]() Glade Spins No-Hitter Wednesday, August 29th, 1906: "This is one of the best moments of my life," Fred Glade said. "You never think that's going to happen -- a no-hitter." He made those comments after he held the Senators hitless in the Detroit 5-0 victory at American League Park II. "We simply couldn't get any wood on the ball," said the Washington manager, when asked about his epic performance. "Glade was brilliant out there. He certainly had our number." Glade was more humble about his historic feat and told BNN reporters that he was "just happy to get the win for the club." He faced only 30 batters in the no-hit gem, struck out 3 and walked 0. This year Glade has 8 wins and 18 losses and a 3.74 ERA.
