Horner will earn $4,900,000 as part of the settlement. In his career Horner has played in 943 games with a .272 batting average. Among his 995 hits are 157 doubles, 6 triples and 167 home runs. 01/05/1984 - Montreal Swaps With San Francisco
Montreal and San Francisco have agreed to a trade today. 25-year-old shortstop Fritzie Connally will go to the Giants. In exchange the Expos will receive 33-year-old starting pitcher John Montefusco. Thus far in his career, Montefusco has worked 2304.2 innings with 1505 strikeouts en route to a 150-109 record. The 33-year-old also has a 3.27 ERA. 01/05/1984 - Pittsburgh Signs Robinson Team insiders were tight-lipped prior to today's deal that brought 26-year-old starting pitcher Don Robinson to Pittsburgh. Robinson is considered one of the league's A-list players and certainly will enhance any chances the Pirates have to win a playoff spot this year. In his career Robinson has fanned 682 batters and walked 302 in 1087 innings of work. His lifetime won-lost record is 64 victories and 58 defeats with a 3.54 ERA and opposing hitters have compiled a .257 against him. 01/05/1984 - Pirates Sign Paxton Pittsburgh officials were grinning from ear to ear as they introduced their latest blockbuster signing to the media earlier today. Mike Paxton, one of the game's marquee talents, opted for the Pirates after receiving a 3-year, $1,258,000 offer. During his career Paxton has registered a 84-75 record and 0 saves. His ERA stands at 3.85 and he has fired third strikes past 896 batters in 1412 innings while giving up 408 walks. It was a busy day for Pittsburgh! |

01/05/1984 - Thornton Returns to San Diego
Fans in San Diego welcomed Andre Thornton back as their new first baseman. The 34-year-old came to terms with the Padres and will be hauling in $760,000 a year over 2 years. In his 1393-game career, Thornton has hit at a .247 clip and collected 1155 hits with 192 doubles, 24 triples, 197 homers, and 728 RBIs. Thornton returns to San Diego after spending the past 4 years with Seattle after leaving the Padres in a trading deadline deal in 1979. Thornton was a Type A free agent and Seattle is due compensation for their loss. They will receive San Diego's 2nd round pick as well as a pick in the supplemental first round. Seattle fans did voice their displeasure with losing Thornton who ranks 2nd in HR's for the franchise and tops the team's list in hit-by-pitches. |

01/06/1984 - California Adds Carbs Back to Diet
The euphoria surrounding a big name deal can sometimes overshadow the deal itself. Occasionally a team will mortgage its future to make a big splash, though no one in California was worried about that today as the club finalized terms with Bernie Carbo. Carbo will earn $743,333 per year over 3 years. Lifetime Carbo has compiled a .259 batting average and collected 1447 hits, 250 home runs and 819 RBIs. |

01/14/1984 - C'mon Man?!?
Jack Clark was injured today in a charity softball game. He suffered a sprained ankle in the 3rd inning when he tried to stretch a double into a triple and stumbled over third base. The injury will likely heal before the start of spring training, but the incident cast a shadow over the game, which was organized to help raise money for local charities and youth leagues. It was the 2nd annual edition of the Jack Clark All-Star Charity Classic, which pits a team of major leaguers against a squad of local celebrities, athletes, and media personalities. Clark's ML All-Stars did end up beating the Celebrity All-Stars squad for the second year in a row by a score of 9-8. It was the injury to Clark, however, that was on the minds of most of the participants after the game. "I feel really bad about what happened to Jack," said former Giants teammate, Luis Sanchez. "I talked to him earlier though, and he reassured me that he has no regrets about participating. He's just a really competitive guy and that's just how he plays every game. Besides, he's pleased we were able to exceed our goals this year. We managed to raise nearly double the amount we raised during last year's inaugural event." |

01/19/1983 - Boston Adds Help
The Red Sox have added some help the past two days with the signing of Bobby Grich and Rod Carew to 1-year deals. Grich re-signed after spending the last 2 years in Boston hitting .221/.316/.347 with 9 HR's and 37 RBI's. Carew comes to Boston after spending the past 17 seasons in Minnesota with the Twins. In his time with Minnesota Carew has amassed 2886 hits & 1010 RBI's while hitting .327/.394/.432. If all goes as planned, Carew will surpass the 3000 hit mark while in Boston. |

02/06/1983 - Astros Sign Gullet
The Astros today announced that they have come to terms with Don Gullett, a 33-year-old starting pitcher they've been scouting for a while. Gullett will earn $620,000 a year over 4 years and is expected to play a key role with the club. In his career Gullett has chalked up 206 wins and 120 losses and compiled a 3.39 ERA. In signing Gullet, Seattle will receive Houston's first round pick as well as a second pick in the supplemental first round. As the Seattle GM, I'm thrilled. I now will have an extra 1st round pick, 2 supplemental first round picks, and an extra 2nd round pick as compensation for losing Andre Thornton and Gullet. However, my fans were a little upset at losing Gullet who leaves as the franchise leader in Wins, Complete Games, Shutouts, and Strikeouts. Gullet will be missed but I just wasn't ready to sign the 33-year older to a 4-year deal. |

02/10/1984 - Milwaukee Loses Starter
The Brewers Moose Haas will be out of action for up to 10 months with an undisclosed injury. The starting pitcher reportedly suffered the injury while helping a friend move. 02/12/1984 - Reds Sign Trio The Reds were busy today signing a trio of free agents - a second baseman, a reliever, and a closer. The new Reds are Jery Remy (1-year, $448K), Dave Tomlin (2-years, $512K), and Mardie Cornejo (3-years, $2.25M). Cornejo pitched well for Texas last season going 4-3 with 36 saves and a 1.90 ERA. Cornejo held opposing batters to a .218 average. 02/12/1984 - Angels Lock Up Ontiveros The California Angels have called a press conference later today to announce the signing of third baseman Steve R Ontiveros to a 2-year, $1,430,000 contract. Both Ontiveros and the Angels are said to be very pleased to come to this agreement. His career numbers show Ontiveros is hitting .283 with a total of 50 home runs. |

02/15/1984 - Reds Do It Again
As speculation mounted into the morning, rumors over a final agreement between Juan Berenguer and Cincinnati became a reality, with the star opting for a $2,340,000 deal over 3 years. Over his career, Berenguer has pitched in 310 games, fashioned a 2.70 ERA, earned 165 saves, fanned 324 in 330.1 innings with opposing batters hitting .229 against him. He has won 21 games and dropped 34 during his time in the league. However, in a curious move the Reds brass will make one of the premier closers of the past 5 years a setup man to recently signed Mardie Cornejo. It remains to be seen how happy Berenguer is with his new role. |

03/31/1984 - Seattle Deals for Outfield Help
The Seattle Mariners swapped 29-year-old closer Willie Hernandez and 23-year-old minor league closer Randy St Claire for 27-year-old center fielder Scott Loucks and 23-year-old minor league center fielder Billy Hatcher of the Brewers after what Milwaukee officials would only characterize as "difficult" negotiations. Hernandez has appeared in 225 games in his career and put together a record of 12 victories and 19 losses, 3.02 ERA and 42 saves. He has thrown 274.1 innings, struck out 229 and walked 80. I have a glut of relievers so I've decided to offload some for some outfield reserves. |

1984 Predictions
Spring Training is over and here's the official predictions for the 1984 season.
It looks like we're in for a dogfight for the AL West crown between California, Seattle, and Minnesota. Meanwhile, it looks like the pundits are expecting big things for rookie Dwight Gooden of Atlanta. |

1984 Seattle Expectations
Seattle owner Alex Watkins appears to be giving up a bit of a pass this year in only expecting a .500 season. I have much higher expectations and will be highly disappointed if we don't make the playoffs. As always, it will come down to our rotation and whether or not they stay healthy - there's not much help down at AAA.

1983 - Heading North
After some late trades (dealing away Willie Hernandez and Sheldon Burnside), here’s the team that’s heading north to the Emerald City.
C: Dale Murphy 1B: Greg Walker 2B: Paul Molitor SS: Dave Stapleton 3B: Tom O'Malley LF: Ivan Calderon CF: Ruppert Jones RF: Jack Clark DH: Bill Buckner Reserves: Mike Heath (C), Andre Robertson (2B/SS), Barry Bonnell (2B/3B/LF/CF/RF), Dion James (CF/RF), Tim Wallach (1B/3B/RF) Starting Pitchers: Mike Witt, Neal Heaton, Dennis Rasmussen, Burt Hooton, Floyd Bannister Relievers: Ralph Citarella, Joe Cowley, Greg Harris, Brad Lesley, Buddy Schultz, Tom Gorman I go into the start of the season with two potential starters on the DL. Gerald Perry is slotted for the LF when he returns. Reliever Enrique Romo is one of the last remaining original Mariners on the roster. He’s been a stalwart in the bullpen and we can’t wait for his return. |

04/03/1984 - Gooden Sparkles in Debut
Rookie Dwight Gooden earned the opening day start for Atlanta and he delivered on his promise for the Braves. Gooden struck out ever Phillie hitter at least once and got right fielder Rick Leach 3 times. |

1984 - Unsigned Rookies
After I saw Dwight Gooden's sparkling debut I looked to see about some other star pitchers ... and I found out that there were a few unsigned draft picks. They include the following players.
Boston: Tom Browning, SP Oakland: Roger Clemens, SP San Diego: Eric Davis, CF Hopefully they'll cause a glut of good picks in next year's draft. |

1984 - Clark Out for 4 Weeks
04/04/1984 - Just 8 innings into his first season for Seattle Jack Clark will make a trip to the disabled list. Clark suffered a fractured foot going for a routine fly ball to right field from Toronto third baseman John Castino. Clark stumbled after he made the catch and got up limping. He left the game and went straight for an x-ray. Team trainer Leslie Taylor delivered the bad news that Clark will be out for 4 weeks. Seattle activated Scott Loucks from AAA to take Clarks place on the roster.
