Game 2

For what it's worth I am expecting San Antonio to roll through the NL and I am concerned we may not have the firepower to beat Ohio. Although the insane game 1 win was a huge step in a best of 5. If I could make the WS I would love to see San Diego get there.

Las Vegas-Noh (20-4 3.10) @ Chicago-Cordero (13-8 3.27)
Another matchup of heavyweights and it didn't disappoint. They both went 7, gave up 2. Noh punched out 9, Cordero 3. The game would go into the 11th tied 2-2 before Aiden Hechavarria hit a leadoff HR to put Vegas up 3-2.
  • Las Vegas 3 Chicago 2
  • W-Patterson (1-0) L-D'Addio (0-1)
  • HR LV-Hechavarria (1) CHI-Campbell (1) Shimasaki (1)
  • Series tied 1-1

San Diego – Blankenship (10-11 4.45) @ Washington – Nakagawa (16-11 4.85)
Chris Blankenship went 8.2 innings giving up 1 and the Missions homered 3 times to take a 2-0 series lead.
  • San Diego 7 Washington 1
  • W-Blankenship (1-0) L-Nakagawa (0-1)
  • HR SD-Ruppe (1) Ivany (1) McKinney (2)
  • San Diego leads series 2-0

Kansas City – Valles (17-9 5.11) @ San Antonio – Scippio (17-7 3.09)
KC slams 3 homers in a 12-5 drubbing to tie it up.
  • Kansas City 12 San Antonio 5
  • W-Valles (1-0) L-Scippio (0-1)
  • HR KC-Golebiowski 2 (2) Castaneda (1) SAN-McNayr (1)
  • Series tied 1-1

Ohio-Banderas (11-13 4.31) @ Florida-Willoughby (14-8 2.97)
Ohio struck 1st on a 2 out solo HR by Luis Paredes in the top of the 2nd. A Kennon Hallamore 3B would tie it in the 3rd and Arturo Mendoza's RBI single made it 2-1. Ismael Saldana hit a solo shot in the 5th to make it 3-1. Willoughby kept it there into the 9th. With no Galindo available Chad started the 9th vs Layne Cosman, who would lead off with a single and then switch hitter Sergio Robles was due up. With a somewhat tired pen, and no desire to bring Jake Grab in for just a single hitter (Robles prefers LHP) Chad stayed in, get him out and leave to a thunderous standing O, he went 8.1 allowing just 3 hits, the single run and 1 walk while striking out 6 on 122 pitches. Brad Turner would be called on to face AL Triple Crown Winner and soon to be MVP Joey Vertz. In what may go down as the most controversial decision of the year and maybe his career General skipper Don Mattingly summoned right-hander Sergio Jaquez was to PH (Mattingly said Vertz's 1-17 postseason and Brad Turner is one of the games most dominant left-handed relievers he wanted a better 'matchup'.)
Turner got Jaquez for the 2nd out and Paredes then lined a 2 out 2 strike single to left. LH hitting 3B Steve Stahl would be allowed to hit and Turner put him away on 3 pitches.
  • Florida 3 Ohio 1
  • W-Willoughby (1-0) L-Banderas (0-1) S-Turner (1)
  • HR- OH-Paredes (1) FLA-Saldana (1)
  • Florida leads series 2-0

Las Vegas – Gallegos (15-15 4.74) @ Chicago – Ortega (10-14 5.58)
A 3-0 aces lead into the 7th turned into a 4-4 game after 8. Both teams would battle into the 15th inning. Former Tarpon Jim Shelley singled leading off the bottom half before a Harland Crudge FC put a runner on 1st with 1 out. On a 2-2 pitch Crudge stole 2nd and on the 3-2 pitch Jeremy Campbell hit a grounder through the left side and Crudge would score on a bang-bang play to give the Hitmen the game and the series!.

  • Chicago wins the series 3-1

League championship series

FLORIDA vs CHICAGO
We must go through the defending champions and their rotation of horses. RJ Stanton 16-5 3.18 with a league-leading 268 k's. Raita Yamada 17-12 3.30, Koufax winner Ezequiel Cordero 13-8 3.27 will lead their starters with Shermar Knightner and his 2.14 ERA to go with 39 saves. Ernesto Montiel paces their offense as the Shortstop hit .312-34-120 and is one of the few players to challenge Ohio's Joe Vertz for the MVP. He registered a 7.3 WAR this year. Elvis Andrus (.288-10-79) stole 72 bases which were 2nd on the team behind leadoff hitter Tomohide Shimasaki (.323-14-88) who stole 79.
They were 3rd in runs scored (814) 3rd in AVG (.278) 2nd in OBP (.350) 2nd in Starters ERA (3.92) and 12th in HR (153) 6th in 'Pen ERA (3.46) 8th in Def Eff (.689)
We ended the year 7th in runs (747) 2nd in AVG (.281) just behind them in OBP 3rd (.345) 7th in HR (167) 1st in Starters ERA (3.79) 3rd in Bullpen (3.11) and 3rd in Def Eff (.695)
They are the defending world champions, but the 2008 title was their first in team history.
Players to watch
For Chicago
  • Jeremy Campbell hit .375-1-10 in 12 games vs Florida
  • Eric Mitchell .271-4-7 in 9 games
  • RJ Stanton was 2-0 in 2 starts, both CG shutouts. 7 hits and 18 k's in 18 IP. I think we will need to beat this guy in an extended series if we want to get to the big dance. Not only have we not done that yet, we haven't even scored a run off him.
  • Raita Yamada 3-0 in 3 starts. 24 IP 18 H 12 K 4 BB 1.13 ERA

For Florida
  • Makata Hayashi .370-3-6 in 8 games
  • DJ Adams 8-21 (.381) HR 7 RBI in 5 games
  • Kody Pollock was 1-1 3.27 in 3 starts 22 IP 22 H 15 K 2 BB

KANSAS CITY vs SAN DIEGO
The Spartans took home the 1st two ABA World Titles and have not won one since. They've made 4 other trips to the playoffs including last year but have not won it all since 1992.
San Diego has made just 4 total trips to the postseason and has never won a title. This is their first appearance in the playoffs since 1995.
KC was the NL's leading offense (870 runs) but San Diego took 6 of 9 meetings between the two.
Players to watch this series
  • Jon Girard-The knuckleballer was 2-0 in 4 starts vs the Missions with a 2.35 ERA
  • Juan Reyna- .361-4-12 in 12 games vs San Diego
  • Katsumoto Sakamoto-.340-2-9 in 9 games

For San Diego

Game one

CHICAGO @ FLORIDA
Stanton 16-5 3.18 vs Pollock 16-5 3.10
No runs vs Stanton in 18 innings this year. Make that 26. He entered the 9th up 4-0 with 9 punchouts and just 3 hits. A Hallamore 1B, Funicello walk and Leith Bursey smashed a 3 run homer with 1 out to make it 4-3! That would end Stanton's day.
Kody Pollock went 8 giving up 6 hits 4 runs (3 earned) walking 1 and striking out 7. The unearned run came courtesy of potential “hero” Leith Bursey in the top of the 8th.
Sherman Knightner came on and Mendoza greets him with a 2B. Juan Flores and Knightner then battled in an epic 14 pitch AB that ended when Jeremy Campbell made an insane play diving into the Tarpon dugout to catch a foul ball.
There was still hope as 2008 NL MVP Guiomar Cortezo was due up. He came into the at-bat hitting just .053 in the post-season, going 1-19 so far. When his soft fly to shallow center was caught the dramatic 9th came to a close.
  • Chicago 4 Florida 3
  • W-Stanton (2-0) L-Pollock (0-1) S-Knightner (2)
  • HR CHI-Montiel (1) FLA-Bursey (3)
  • POTG- RJ Stanton
  • Chicago leads series 1-0

Kansas City @ San Diego
Gourley (1-4 5.13) vs Blankenship (10-11 4.45)
A 3-3 game into the 8th before Spartan 2B Vince Sherman launched a tie breaking 2 run homer.
  • Kansas City 6 San Diego 4
  • W-Gourley (1-0) L-Santlouis (0-1) S-Stone (1)
  • HR KC-Sherman (1) SD-Ruppe (3)
  • POTG Bobby Ruppe who continued his post-season show going 3-4 HR 2 RBI. He's hitting .417-3-7
  • KC Leads series 1-0

CHICAGO @ FLORIDA
Cordero (13-8 3.27) vs Willoughby (14-8 2.97)
Funicello kicked things off with a 2 run shot in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 2-0. Chad Willoughby would pretty much take over. Battling some control issues he went 7.2 IP allowing 6 hits 4 walks 3 K's but just 1 run. Brad Turner came on in a 4-1 game in the top of the 8th with 2 outs and the bases loaded and punched out PH Sean Goldstein to preserve the lead. Galindo shut it down in the 9th. Cordero went the distance on 13 hits 3 BB allowing 6 earned runs

Game three

FLORIDA @ CHICAGO
Alatorre (12-8 3.65) vs Yamada (17-12-3.30)
Chicago jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd, we tied it in the top of the 3rd and Alatorre gives it back in the bottom half before having to come out with a bad back. I go to the youngster Sugihara who quite literally implodes, giving up 5 hits, 2 home runs and somehow just 2 earned runs in getting just 2 outs. Tsunesuke Yamada comes in to stabilize a 4-2 game where he keeps it until the 7th.
A dormant Guiomar Cortezo leads off the top of the 7th with his 1st postseason homer to make it 4-3. A Flores single, followed by a Mendoza single and then a Bursey RBI double all happen in 4 pitches and it's 4-4. Hallamore singles to make it 5-4 before Yamada is pulled. Reliever Jake Hornaday is then greeted by Giobbe Funicello who slams a 3 run homer to cap off a 7 run 7th inning!
Chicago gets 2 back on a Campbell 2 run shot but Brad Turner and Galindo combine to go 2.2 IP on just a hit and a walk to take game 3 9-6.
  • Florida 9 Chicago 6
  • W-Yamada (1-0) L-Yamada (1-1)
  • HR FLA-Cortezo (1) Funicello (3) CHI-Montiel (2) Campbell (2) Hatch (1)
  • POTG Keenan Hallamore 3-4 2B (1) 2 R 2 RBI (7) 2 SB (5)
  • Florida leads the series 2-1

San Diego - Carmona (8-8 4.05) Kansas City - Girard (14-9 3.67)
San Diego gets 2 in the 1st on the 1st of 2 Humberto Camacho home runs but KC answers back with 2 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th before pulling away to take a 3-0 series lead.
  • Kansas City 9 San Diego 5
  • W-Girard (2-0) L-Carmona (0-1)
  • HR SD- Camacho 2 (4) KC-Blashill 2 (2)
  • POTG Blashill
  • KC leads the series 3-0

Game four

Juan Alatorre will be DtD for at least a week so we'll make that call when the time comes.

FLORIDA @ CHICAGO
Samvdio (14-10 4.39) vs Ortega (10-14 5.58)
Ismael Saldana gets things started when he hits a 2 run homer in the 2nd to open the scoring. Then, as was the case yesterday, the offense goes to work in the 3rd.
Hayashi walks to lead it off and Cortezo does as well. Joe Cummings infield single loads the bases. Giobbe Funicello lines the 1st pitch he sees up the middle and two runs scored. Saldana follows that with an RBI single of his own. Hallamore singles to once again load the bases. Arturo Mendoza punches out for the innings 2nd out before Leith Bursey's RBI single makes it 6-0. Juan Flores Pops up and then Hayashi, batting for the 2nd time in the inning runs a full count before lining a 3-2 curveball down the right-field line for a grand slam and a 10-0 lead.
  • Florida 11 Chicago 2
  • W-Samvdio (2-0) L-Ortega (0-1) S-Allen (1)
  • HR FLA-Hayashi GS (3) Saldana (2)
  • POTG Makata Hayashi 2-5 BB 2 R Grand Slam 4 RBI
  • Florida leads the series 3-1

San Diego – Silva (9-10 5.44) @ Kansas City – Richardson (9-8 4.88)

  • San Diego 7 Kansas City 3

Game five

FLORIDA @ CHICAGO
Pollock (16-5 3.10) vs RJ Stanton (16-5 3.18)
A rematch of Game 1 starters. We've scored 3 runs in 26.1 innings this year off RJ Stanton and those came in the 27th inning of facing him. Today the lucky day?
Yes, it is. Guiomar Cortezo's 2 out 1st inning solo shot was an icebreaker and a huge lift for starter Kody Pollock, 8 IP 6 H 1 ER 0 BB 4 K who locks horns with Stanton, who goes the distance 9 IP 6 H 3 R 2 ER 2 BB 8 K 136 pitches and Galindo strikes out Ernesto Montiel in the bottom of the 9th with the bases loaded to put the Florida Tarpons in their first ever World Series.
  • Florida 3 Chicago 2
  • W-Pollock (1-1) L-Stanton (2-1) S- Galindo (1)
  • HR FLA-Cortezo (2) Adams (2)
  • Florida wins the series 4-1
  • SERIES MVP – Giobbe Funicello 3 HR 9 RBI

San Diego – Blankenship (10-11 4.45) @ Kansas City – Gourley (1-4 5.13)
Never a contest as KC jumps out early before Chris Golebiowski hits a 3 run shot in the 3rd to extend a 2-1 lead to 5-1.
Kansas City 9 San Diego 2
W-Hoyt (1-0) L-Blankenship (1)
HR SD-Owen (2) KC-Golebiowski (3) Saucedo (5)
Kansas City wins the series 4-1
SERIES MVP – Kennan Blashill 6-10 2 HR 7 RBI

Kc and florida to meet in the world series

A team that's never won, against a team that won the first two world series and hasn't won since. Tons of stories for this world series but before we can begin the biggest story may have already happened. NLCS MVP Kennan Blashill was diagnosed with a ruptured tendon in his left knee and will miss the world series for the Spartans. A key cog during the season (.306-21-75) Blashill helped propel the Spartans past the Missions hitting .600 with 2 HR and 7 RBI's.
Even considering the injury the key to this world series, from a Tarpon perspective, will be slowing down the white-hot Juan Saucedo who has 5 homers so far this post-season and keeping the top of their lineup from RBI opportunities. From Weisenborn to Reyna they are lethal.
The knuckleballer worries me (I keep going back to that draft and veteran readers may remember me debating on taking him early or not) but if Hayashi, Saldana, and Funicello can keep up their great postseasons and Cortezo can do ANYTHING, we have a shot. I like any game that gets us into the 7th with the lead.
I'd love to see this have Galindo on the mound to get the final out. But I would REALLY prefer it happens in 5-6 games tops. I don't like the unpredictability of a 7th game. I need Kody Pollock to be the guy if it comes down to that.

Here's a visual look at the two teams heading to the 2009 World Series from top to bottom.

Game five

A repeat of game 1 starters with Valles going against Willoughby.
The home teams have won the first 4 games.
Another gem of a game. Chad Willoughby took a no-hitter into the 7th before Nate Weisenborn homered with 1 out. The score? That didn't matter as the offense pounded out 13 hits to go with 9 walks in a record-setting 14-3 win. POTG Giobbe Funicello tied a world series record going 5-5 and scoring 5 times. Ismael Saldana went 2-4 2B (2) HR (3) and drove in 3 while Arturo Mendoza went 3-4 2B (6) scored twice and drove in 4 (6).
  • Florida 14 Kansas City 3
  • W-Willoughby (3-1) L-Valles (3-1)
  • HR KC-Weisenborn (3) FLA-Funicello (6) Saldana (3)
  • POTG Giobbe Funicello 5-5 HR 5 R RBI
  • Florida leads the series 3-2

Game seven

Kody Pollock vs Bubba Dunay for all the marbles. I guess I should have been careful what I wished for at the outset of the series.
Leith Bursey drives the 1st pitch of the game to deep center for a leadoff home run! 2 outs and 4 hitters later Arturo Mendoza slams a 2 run homer to give Florida a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play.
Kody Pollock responds by fanning the side in the bottom half of the 1st.
KC answers with a run in the 4th but Pollock is masterful through 7.1 innings. With runners on 1st and 2nd, one out Burgess calls on Closer Ernesto Galindo who had not thrown a pitch in 11 days. He strikes out Dave Manzer and PH Katsumoto Sakamoto to end the threat.
And with two outs in the 9th game 6 hero Juan Reyna steps to the plate with one man on.
“Galindo comes set, gets the sign from Funicello, here comes the 0-2 pitch...
SWUNG ON AND MISSED! THE FLORIDA TARPONS HAVE WON THE 2009 WORLD SERIES! THE TARPONS ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS!”
  • Florida 3 Kansas City 1
  • W-Pollock (3-1) L-Dunay (0-2) S-Galindo (2)
  • HR FLA-Mendoza (1) Bursey (4)
  • SERIES MVP – Funicello 12-24 3 HR 5 RBI
  • Florida wins the series 4 games to 3
