TWIWBL 35.1: The Final Trading Window!
Welcome to the wild final day of trading for the season! We're going to present these from the point of view of the contenders, with teams examined in order of their winning percentage so far this season.
Look for roster moves and implications in the next installments of TWIWBL. With 3/4 of the league making at least one deal, the impacts should be felt for a while ... Baltimore Black Sox Baltimore got their hands on one of the best arms available, bringing in Connie Johnson from Kansas City. The Monarchs added a 5th round pick, receiving 2 prospects (OF Merv Rettenmund and RP Gene Garber) and a 2nd round pick for the 33 year-old hurler. Grade: A. Johnson looks to be the real deal and should help the Black Sox withstand the recent rash of injuries. Portland Sea Dogs The Sea Dogs keep tweaking, sending 3 prospects--CF Kirby Puckett, RP Jim Kern, and SP Rick Wise--to Houston, with Trevor Hoffman and Mark Melancon coming back. Hoffman may compete with Elmer Brown for the closer role for Portland. The teams also traded some draft picks, with Houston sending a 4th to Portland in exchange for a 3rd and a 5th. They also picked up perhaps the best OF available, as highly touted prospect Harmon Killebrew and a 1st round pick netted Gavvy Cravath and a 2nd round pick from Philadelphia, with the Stars also picking up most of Cravath's salary for the rest of the season. Grade: B. If they make the playoffs, sure, it makes sense. But Cravath is old, and Killebrew and Puckett are a lot of talent to give up (although both are pretty blocked by existing WBL talent). New York Gothams The Gothams were clearly trying to bolster their pitching, and pulled off a minor deal, sending prospects Travis Bowyer and Mike Shannon along with a 4th round pick to Homestead for Vean Gregg and a 5th rounder. They also added Steve Howe to their bullpen, sending the disgruntled Jeremy Affeldt and prospect Bob Moose to Ottawa. And then they pulled off a bit of a blockbuster, as discussions with Miami surrounding Rube Waddell quickly spiraled out of control, with heavy drink most likely being involved. The Gothams sent Freddie Fitzsimmons, Cookie Rojas, Yasiel Puig, and a 2nd round pick to the Cuban Giants, receiving Waddell, Pete Runnels, and Will Clark in return. Finally, as they now needed more depth they hit redial on their rotary phone and got in touch with Ottawa again, sending prospects George Burns and Art Devlin along with a 3rd round pick to the Mounties for George Van Haltren and two mid round picks (a 5th and a 6th). Grade: C. It just seems like a lot of wheel-spinning. Is having Waddell and Gregg in the rotation really all that different than Moose and Fitzsimmons? Clark has been mediocre at best with Miami, and Rojas is a real loss. Chicago American Giants Chicago bolstered their pitching, picking up David Price from Indianapolis. Jorge Orta also goes to Chicago, with the American Giants sending prize prospect Robin Ventura, RP Tyler Clippard, and 2 draft picks (a 4th and a 5th) to the ABC's. Grade: A. Price may help compensate for the deeply flawed acquisition of Don Newcombe earlier in the summer. Cleveland Spiders The Spiders paid pretty dearly to upgrade the one slot in their lineup crying out for it, sending prized prospect Nap Lajoie, RP Arodys Vizcaíno, and a 1st round pick to Homestead for SS Arky Vaughan, SP Stan Bahnsen, and a 3rd rounder. Grade: B. It all makes sense: Vaughan fills a need, Bahnsen has been solid at the WBL level and while Lajoie clearly is talented, for a team that has a shot at a championship this year, it works. Detroit Wolverines Especially with the loss of Whit Wyatt to injury, if Detroit is to make a move this year, they need pitching. So they sent quite a package of potential--2B Charlie Gehringer, 3B Bill Sweeney, SP Red Ehret, and a 4th Round Pick--to San Francisco for Charlie Root and Chad Bradford. It's a lot, and the loss of Gehringer may hurt, but Detroit is really in win-now mode. Grade: B. Root is excellent, and while they paid a little dearly, this year really looks to be the Wolverines' best chance. Birmingham Black Barons Birmingham is unsure if its streak can continue, but an upgrade at C can't hurt, so the Black Barons sent 2 IF prospects (SS Woody English and 3B Candy Jim Taylor) to Memphis for Jim Pagliaroni and a 4th round pick. Then, late in the day, the pulled the trigger on a bit of a blockbuster, adding Andy Pettitte from Kansas City to their rotation. It cost quite a bit: C Dale Murphy (still a prospect despite his miserable WBL debut earlier in the season), P A. Rube Foster, a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick. It was quite a declaration of intent by the Black Barons, we'll see if it pans out. Grade: A. Suddenly, Birmingham has a shot at the playoffs. Pettitte immediately becomes their #2 starter, and while they gave up some good talent, neither Murphy nor Foster look like world-burners at this point. Wandering House of David The House of David can still get lucky this year, so it moved to shore up a weak spot, sending prospects Bert Campaneris and Jeff Heathcock and a 3rd round pick to Miami for Ed Bauta and 2 later round picks (a 6th and a 7th). Grade: C. Meh. New York Black Yankees The Black Yankees are desperate for bullpen help. They started to address the need picking up Aroldis Chapman from Miami, sending back Cole Hamels and Smoky Burgess, with Miami adding a 3rd round pick. With Bauta and Hoffman off the market, New York was forced to look at names further down their list. They brought in Dick Tidrow from the House of David (who also threw in a 7th round pick), giving up a 2nd rounder and 2 prospects: SP Jim Clinton and 3B Chris Brown and then sent a similar package (LaTroy Hawkins, Fritz Coumbe, Mike Bordick, and a 3rd round pick) to Philadelphia for Rheal Cormier and a 4th rounder. Grade: C. Overpaid on all fronts. Understandable, given the totally shambolic nature of the Black Yankees' bullpen, but the loss of Hamels may hurt for many years, and Tidrow is little more than a fill-in.

TWIWBL 36.0: Series XXVIII Notes
July 31
Awards Preview We're at the end of July, so let's take a look at the front-runners for the major awards. The Mel Trench Award (MVP) I mean ... look, Cleveland's Ron Blomberg (341/410/649; 32 HR) is a great story and the key to the Spiders' offense. And Chicago's Eddie Collins (311/402/513; 43 SB) may be the best all-around player in the game--it's him or his teammate Joe Jackson (337/423/585). And some of you will create convoluted definitions of "valuable" in support of Los Angeles' Doug Radar, the league RBI leader and (as of right now) the only player in triple digits or Portland's Kent Hrbek, who is now tied for the league league in HR with 33. But it's really all about the guy he's tied with. Barring something quite surprising, the New York Black Yankees' Babe Ruth should take the inaugural Mel Trench Award. Ruth has led the league in HRs all season, in OPS most of the year, and is in the top few in almost every offensive category. He is, simply, the most devastating offensive force in the league. The Brock Rutherford Award (Pitcher of the Year) Portland's Walter Johnson began the year as the favorite here, and was then overtaken by Los Angeles' Gerrit Cole. But Cole has stalled a bit after rattling off 5 straight victories to improve his record to 11-3, going 1-3 over his last 9 starts, allowing the rest of the league to catch up. And then there's Baltimore's Ned Garvin, who looked to be the front-runner, posting a 9-4 record and an ERA well under 3. But Garvin is out for the rest of the season. Cleveland's Pat Malone and the New York Gotham's Christy Mathewson join Cole with 12 wins, and 7 pitchers have 11. So if one of those go on a streak, they have to be considered favorites. But I would put forth three other names: Birmingham's Alejandro Peña has been the statistical front-runner, with an over 1 point of WAR edge on Johnson and leads the league in FIP. Peña was considered a bit of a joke when the Black Barons were buried in the standings; now that they are challenging for a playoff spot, he merits serious consideration. Jack Taylor of the House of David is posting an actual ERA at about the same level as Peña's FIP, leading the league in both that and WHIP. And if I had to vote, I would vote for Baltimore's Bill Byrd, who has sat on the leaderboards all season, quietly and consistently anchoring the best staff in the league. Byrd is 11-3, with a 3.29 ERA, not league-leading, but among the leaders. The Phineas Flint Award (Reliver of the Year) Another award that has been greatly impacted by injury, as Portland's Johan Santana was the clear leader here. But he's been surpassed, and the award probably has to go to Detroit's Mike Henneman, the league leader in saves with 30, 5 more than Cleveland's Terry Adams. The only other argument right now is, I think, the Gothams' Brian Wilson, who has 22 saves and a microscopic 1.08 ERA. Ron Reed was making a case as an all-purpose reliever, but while he still leads the league in holds, he has struggled enough since his trade to Cleveland to fall out of contention. If anyone in that category should be in the conversation at this point, it's the Gothams' Mike Norris. Silver Sticks C: Johnny Bench (IND). 308/414/602. 1B: Kent Hrbek (POR). 304/378/598. 2B: Eddie Collins (CAG). 311/402/513. 3B: Dick Allen (CAG). 315/381/548. SS: Bobby Wallace (BAL). 309/408/441. OF: Babe Ruth (NYY). 315/433/645. OF: Eric Davis (NYY). 277/354/539. OF: Willie Mays (NYG). 324/387526. Predictably, the OF spots are the most contentious, with Joe Jackson, Reggie Jackson, and a half-dozen others not sharing the same last name all making arguments as well. TWIWBL 36.1: Series XXVIII Notes - Bill James Division
#Detroit Wolverines
The Wolverines welcome Charlie Root and Chad Bradford to their staff, but perhaps the return of Tony Phillips is even more important for Detroit's push down the stretch. Mickey Lolich and Si Johnson were sent to AAA, although both pitched decently. Robby Thompson was sent down on Phillips' return. Mike Henneman was the first in the league to notch 30 saves, reaching the milestone in a 7-6 victory over Houston. Sparky Adams and Ed Bailey each had 2 doubles in the contest. An injury to Buddy Napier forced Detroit to put the effective reliever on the DL for 10 days, recalling Jason Schmidt. #Los Angeles Angels Pud Galvin and Harry Howell moved into the Angels' rotation. #Memphis Red Sox Jim Paglioroni's departure cleared the way for young Kurt Suzuki's promotion to Memphis, where he'll platoon with Billy Bryan behind the plate. Nixey Callahan was returned to AAA to make room for Turk Farrell's return from a rehab assignment. #New York Gothams Vean Gregg and Steve Howe lengthen the Gothams' bullpen, and Rube Waddell replaces Don Sutton in the rotation. But the real changes have occurred offensively. 38 year old Joe Adcock is pounding the ball, and will become the full-time DH. Pete Runnels and Will Clark step right into the lineup. Overall, New York is worse off defensively, but may generate more consistent offense. A lot depends on whether Adcock and fan favorite Wes Westrum can continue their levels of production. George Van Haltren will lose playing time coming to the Gothams to serve as a reserve OFer, but he is now in the midst of a pennant race instead of languishing in Ottawa, so there's that. Christy Mathewson, helped by a perfect 1.2 IP of relief from Mike Norris, improved to 12-6 on the season in an 8-4 victory over their crosstown rivals. Norris picked up his 4th save, and Jimmy Sheckard, Johnny Callison, and Willie Mays each went deep for the Gothams. #Wandering House of David Tweak, tweak, tweak. Bunny Downs can't hit any worse than Craig Reynolds and Jung Ho Kang have, and by adding him to the roster, the House of David could also promote veteran Joe Harris as a bat off the bench. Jack Taylor twirled a 3-hit, complete game shutout as the House of David beat Brooklyn 6-0. Elrod Hendricks went deep twice and drove in 5 in support of Taylor, who improved to 11-8 on the season while lowering his ERA to 3.15, good for tops in the WBL.

TWIWBL 36.2: Series XXVIII Notes - Cum Posey Division
#Baltimore Black Sox
Newcomer Connie Johnson steps into the rotation, with Johnny Sain moving to the bullpen and Jim Palmer taking the final spot in the rotation. Lindy McDaniel was returned to AAA. #Chicago American Giants While Sonny Dixon's injury is still being diagnosed, David Price's arrival pushed Chicago to place Dixon on the DL. Clay Condrey's 9.00 plus ERA earned a trip to AAA as Hoyt Wilhelm returned from his injury. Price replaced Don Newcombe in the rotation, but the bullpen remains in a bit of disarray as the American Giants await AJ Minter's return from shoulder soreness. While neither have impressed, José Abreu's continued struggles at the plate have opened the door for Magglio Ordóñez to receive more playing time down the stretch. Dixon will miss about 8 months, so the early trip to the DL worked out, from that perspective ... Turns out it's really hard to overcome 4 errors. Price's first start was brilliant: 4 hits in just under 6 innings, no earned runs ... but 5 runs allowed on miscues by Eddie Collins, Jack Doyle (2), and Jackie Hayes. Ed Walsh and Scott Radinsky were solid in relief, but Wilhelm gave up some key hits and took the loss. Doyle had 4 hits in the game. Cristóbal Torriente will miss about 2 weeks, prompting Chicago to recall Kevin Mitchell from AAA. #Houston Colt 45's Chad Qualls was recalled from AAA. Other than that, there's not much change in Houston, other than the continued attempt to spread out plate appearances. This time, Pete Hill seeing more game time means George Brett seeing less. #Kansas City Monarchs Adam Russell and Rube Marquard were recalled from AAA, but the Monarchs did little else to reflect their build for the future outlook. #Ottawa Mounties Bob Moose and Kirk Reuter moved into the rotation with Clark Griffith heading back to AAA and Greg Holland joining the big league club as the merry-go-round of the Mounties' staff continues. Nineteen year old Ken Griffey, Jr. has done everything Ottawa has asked since his demotion, performing well at both AAA and AA. He's been brought back up to the WBL club as Ottawa retools to see how its youth will progress. Griffey, Jr. will split time with Carlos Beltrán in CF. Trade acquisition George Burns also lands in Ottawa with both Terry Puhl and Phil Bradley heading to AAA in a major reset of the big league OF. Things looked bleak for Ottawa as Birmingham had the lead 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th when Larry Parrish stepped up and launched his 3rd homerun of the year to tie the game. Randy Johnson and Greg Holland both pitched well in relief, and Beltrán won the game in the 12th with a walkoff grandslam. Tim Raines (who was caught stealing twice) and Anthony Rendon had 3 hits each in the 8-4 victory. Jeremy Affeldt, a bit of a throw-in at the trade deadline, has been horrible for Ottawa: an ERA over 20 level horrible. So when he refused a demotion to AAA, the Mounties made the sensible move: they released him. Gary Peters was recalled from his injury rehab to take Affeldt's place.

TWIWBL 36.3: Series XXVIII Notes - Effa Manley Division
#Cleveland Spiders
Mel Harder moves into the rotation, replacing the injured Whit Wyatt, a move which is sure to disappoint the fan base that was hoping for a major pitching acquisition at the deadline. They'll have to be satisfied with the recall of Bob Feller, who is far, far too good for AAA, with Ken Schrom being returned. The fan base may be appeased by the arrival of SS Arky Vaughan from Homestead, who may give the Spiders the best top-to-bottom lineup in the league. Vaughan's arrival sent Bill Knickerbocker to AAA and moved Bill Dahlen to the role of defensive replacement. Sudden Sam McDowell was returned to AAA as Yordano Ventura was recalled from a rehab assignment after missing a couple months through injury. #Homestead Grays John Candelaria and Ray Brown were recalled from AAA, with Candelaria sliding into the rotation. More dramatically, Arky Vaughan's departure means the team is committing to the idea that Honus Wagner can make the transition to SS, which also opens the door for Andy Van Slyke and Chief Wilson to see more time, given how well they have hit over recent weeks (Van Slyke is currently slashing 404/436/649, Wilson 392/395/747--clearly neither is sustainable). Tom Brown was sent to AAA, as the Grays needed another SS (Jack Wilson). Rick Reichardt had 2 homeruns and 5 RBIs in a topsy-turvey, 8-6 win over Indianapolis. Mike Epstein and Wagner also went deep in the contest. #Indianapolis ABC's Doc Hoblitzell was returned to AAA with Virgil Trucks, Francisco Cordero, and Octavio Dotel heading up to AAA. The ABC's have quite a few pitchers who have struggled in Indianapolis and dominated in Cincinnati, so we'll see how that goes. Oscar Charleston had 3 hits, 2 of which were triples, but the ABC's were unable to hold on to several leads, losing 8-6 to Homestead. #New York Black Yankees Well, we'll see. They certainly added some bullpen arms, whether it's enough quality is yet to be determined. Lady Baldwin and Dave Righetti were returned to AAA, clearing the room for Aroldis Chapman (who slides directly into the closer slot), Dick Tidrow, and Rheal Cormier. Jamie Moyer slides into the back of the rotation. Waite Hoyt broke out of a slump in a big way, with a complete game victory over the Gothams, allowing 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 3 and not walking a batter. Mickey Mantle and Eric Davis went deep for the Black Yankees as Hoyt improved to 9-6. #Philadelphia Stars As important as any trade, the Stars will get Pete Alexander back from injury at some point in the next week after a quick rehab assignment. In the meantime, Hardie Henderson was brought up to deepen the bullpen and Tim Belcher may get another start or two until Alexander returns. Slugging OF Aaron Judge was recalled from AAA. Wayne Gomes was sent to AAA, with Alexander making his long awaited return.

TWIWBL 36.4: Series XXVIII Notes - Marvin Miller Division
#Birmingham Black Barons
The arrival of Jim Pagliaroni sent Del Crandall packing (he refused a demotion to AAA), with Gene Tenace being relegated to reserve duty. Nate Colbert was the odd man out with Andy Pettitte's arrival prompting Birmingham to carry 12 pitchers. Colbert will be back when rosters expand if not sooner. Pettitte slides into the rotation, with Larry Benton heading to the bullpen. Optimistically, the trio of Alejandro Peña, Pettitte, and Greg Maddux are on par with any trio of starters in the league, but that depends on Maddux maintaining his current form and all three staying healthy. Pettitte's first start was a success: 6 shutout innings, and combining with Steve Bedrosian and Kent Mercker on a 10 hit blanking of Ottawa. The Black Barons turned a league record 6 double plays in the game, and Frank McCormick, Hank Aaron, and Bob Nieman all went deep. Harley Young will miss about a month, a pretty big blow to the Black Barons bullpen. Jim Whitney was recalled to take Young's place. #Brooklyn Royal Giants Art Griggs will miss about 2 weeks of action with an oblique strain. The Royal Giants recalled OF Matt Holliday from AAA. #Miami Cuban Giants Lots of roster juggling here ... Cole Hamels and Freddie Fitzsimmons join the big league roster, with Hamels sliding right into the rotation. José Méndez takes over the final rotation spot, pushing Eustaquio Pedroso back to the bullpen. Once Ozzie Canseco clears waivers, Sandy Consuegra will be recalled from AAA. The departure of Ed Bauta and Aroldis Chapman leave the Cuban Giants pretty weak at the back end of the pen, so they're hoping some mix of Brown, Braden Looper, and Ricky Nolasco can handle closing games out. Willie Kamm was promoted all the way from AA, and Jim Thome recalled from AAA to replace the departed Will Clark. Fitzsimmons pitched in 2 games and then hit the DL with a hamstring problem, prompting Miami to recall Marcelino López to fill out the bullpen. #Portland Sea Dogs Hal Griggs and Frank Williams were sent to AAA to clear room for Trevor Hoffman and Mark Melancon and Dizzy Trout took the final spot in their rotation. Gavvy Cravath's arrival sent Ruben Sierra back as well. Cravath slides into RF, most likely reducing both Jeff Burroughs' and Greg Litton's playing time. The Sea Dogs hit 6 homeruns in an 11-5 thrashing of Los Angeles, with Harry Hooper (a grandslam), Kent Hrbek (twice), Buddy Bell, Iván Rodriguez, and Rogers Hornsby all sending balls over the fence. Hrbek once again tied for the league lead with his 33rd of the season. Despite extreme wildness, Joséito Muñoz surrendered only 1 run in just over 5 innings, leveling his record at 5-5 on the season. Walter Johnson will miss about a week, requiring a quick trip to the DL. The Sea Dogs recalled Ray Fontenot from AAA, but Atlee Hammaker is likely to get the nod for Johnson's next start. Both Pascual Pérez and, more interestingly, Joe Mauer, began rehab assignments at AAA. #San Francisco Sea Lions Billy Taylor and Nick Altrock were promoted to San Francisco, with Altrock sliding right into the back of the rotation as the Sea Lions try to figure out just what they have in the 28 year old hurler. Gene Oliver was brought up to platoon with Mickey Cochrane behind the plate, with Cy Perkins being let go. There may be more moves ahead, depending on the status of Dick Lundy's injury. San Francisco would really like to move Miguel Cairo down, but it's not clear who is ready for big league minutes at SS, especially if Lundy is out for any length of time. Lundy will miss about 2 weeks, prompting the Sea Lions to recall Roy Hartzell from AAA. Hartzell started his WBL career with a bang, hitting a homerun in his first at-bat. Bobby Bonds and Bob Cerv also went deep, and Tim Hudson seems to have turned the corner in his time in San Francisco as the Sea Lions beat Baltimore, 6-2. Two homeruns from Pedro Guerrero led the Sea Lions to a 6-5 victory over the Black Sox. Guerrero drove in 5, helping Eddie Plank move to 8-5 on the year with Rod Beck picking up his 22nd save. Taylor appeared in one game and tore his rotator cuff, putting him out for about 10 months. Bump Hadley was recalled from AAA.

Series XXIX Preview: New York Black Yankees @ Baltimore Black Sox
We're in August, so we're changing the rules; while we still plan to highlight as many teams in the league as we can, we'll start to focus on matchups that have some additional interest (most likely on pennant races).
We've seen most teams thrice, with only Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Portland, and San Francisco featured only twice. To kick it off, we'll focus on the New York Black Yankees (who we saw in Series XI, XV, and XIX) visit to Baltimore to take on the Black Sox (who we featured in Series IX, XVI, and XXV). The Black Yankees are 5.5 games behind in the Effa Manley Division, and the Black Sox have the best record in the WBL, with 66 wins, ahead of Chicago by 2 games in the Cumberland Posey Division. #New York Black Yankees A great offense, excellent starting pitching, and an incredibly poor bullpen. That's the Black Yankees in a nutshell. New York leads the WBL in runs scored, OPS, WAR, and homeruns, and it ain't all because of Babe Ruth. Mickey Mantle leads the team with a .323 batting average, Ruth leads in virtually everything else. Red Ruffing leads the staff in wins at 11-6 and in ERA at 3.88. But the staff is strong 1 through 4, and Jamie Moyer seems to have claimed the 5th spot. And then there's the bullpen ... the only hope for the Black Yankees is that the newcomers--Rheal Cormier, Dick Tidrow, and especially closer Aroldis Chapman--can address the team's glaring weakness. #Baltimore Black Sox Baltimore's staff is first in the league in runs against, both starting and relieving ERA, and the Black Sox lead in most fielding metrics. Dennis Martínez and Bill Byrd have 11 wins each, and both have ERAs under 3.50. There aren't any weak spots here: reliever Sean Marshall is virtually unhittable, and Don Bessent--now the full time closer since Bob Miller's injury--has 16 saves. Joe Beggs has been a disappointment since his acquisition, but seems more likely to rebound than not. It's not like the Black Sox lack offense: Bobby Wallace and Larry Gardner are each hitting .309 with OBPs hovering around .400. Frank Robinson leads in HR (25) and RBI (79), trailing only Curt Blefary in OPS. The only offensive weak link--CF Paul Blair--provides gold glove defense and has improved from a miserable hitter to merely well below average. #Projected Starters New York listed first Red Ruffing (11-6, 3.88) @ Dennis Martínez (11-7, 3.46) Jamie Moyer (5-4, 4.06) @ Bill Byrd (11-3, 3.29) Jack Scott (10-5, 4.38) @ Mike Mussina (4-2, 3.67) Waite Hoyt (9-6, 4.07) @ Connie Johnson (5-5, 4.13) #Prediction The classic question: good hitting or good pitching? I'm going to side with the bats this time, not least of all because it would tighten up some good pennant races--Black Yankees take 3 of the 4.

Series XXIX Best Games
Detroit's trip to Brooklyn and Kansas City's visit to Indianapolis each provided 3 games worth recapping.
We'll take a look at the Wolverines matchup with the Royal Giants first. #Detroit Wolverines @ Brooklyn Royal Giants Detroit's Charlie Root and Brooklyn's Frank Knauss hooked up in a pitcher's duel. Ty Cobb's 17th homerun of the year--a 3 run shot--gave the Wolverines a 3-1 lead in the top of the 8th, but John Briggs sent one over the fence to tie it in the bottom of the frame. Bill Carrigan doubled in Hank Greenberg in the top of the 10th, and Detroit turned to the league leader in saves, Mike Henneman, to close it out. Ron Cey greeted Henneman with a double, but was thrown out, inexplicably trying to stretch the hit into a triple. That ended the threat, and Henneman ended the game. DET 4 (Hiller 3-1, 2 B Sv; Henneman 31 Sv) @ BRK 3 (Von Ohlen 5-2) [10 Innings] HRs: DET - Cobb (17); BRK - Becker (18), Briggs (4). Box Score Detroit won game 2, taking the lead on a 3-run homer from Oscar Gamble in the top of the first and never looking back. That put the Wolverines up 2-0 in the series, setting the stage for game 3. Gene Conley continues to be a rare find for Detroit, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) and 3 hits in 7 innings. But the usually reliable Wolverines bullpen wasn't able to hold a lead, giving up 4 runs in the final 3 innings with Duke Farrell doubling in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. John Hiller blew his second save of the series, falling to 3-2 on the season, with the victory going to Trevor Hildenberger who pitched a scoreless final 2 innings. DET 3 (Hiller 3-2; 3 B Sv) @ BRK 4 (Hildenberger 4-1) HRs: DET - Greenberg (22); BRK - Briggs (5). Box Score Whoops he did it again ... Just like in Series XXV, Beals Becker ended a game with a walk-off grandslam. Again it was the Detroit bullpen that collapsed, this time--shockingly--it was Mike Henneman who gave up a walk and 3 hits (including Becker's blast) to the 4 batters he faced. Tony Phillips--who has sparkled since his return from injury--had 4 hits for Detroit, and Frank Isbell went 3-for-3 for Brooklyn. DET 5 (Henneman 1-5, 4 B Sv; Lolich 3 H; Anderson 6 H) @ BRK 7 (Dreifort 1-3) HRs: DET - Bailey (17), Kaline (2), Phillips (7); BRK - Farrell (6), Snider (27), Becker (21). Box Score #Kansas City Monarchs @ Indianapolis ABC's Indianapolis won all four games against Kansas City. A bases-clearing double by Joe Morgan was the key hit in game 1. The other 3 games were all close contests. In the 2nd game, Kansas City out hit the ABC's 17-7, but 4 RBIs (3 on his 25th homerun of the year) by Johnny Bench keyed an 8-6 Indianapolis victory. Ted Simmons had 4 hits for the Monarchs and Ducky Medwick 3, but Kansas City left 11 runners on base. KCM 6 (Blong 3-2, 1 B Sv) @ IND 8 (Murphy 2-4; Dibble 24 Sv; Carroll 8 H) HRs: KCM - Pujols (18), Medwick (12); IND - Votto (5), Bench (25). Box Score Game 3 saw Kansas City's Trevor Rosenthal and Frank DiPino implode as the ABC's scored 6 runs in the 7th, coming back from a 7-2 deficit. The ABC's Dolf Luque logged only 2 innings, but Johnny Cueto had his best appearance in a while, allowing a single run in 5 strong innings of relief work. KCM 7 (DiPino 1-5) @ IND 8 (Cueto 8-6; Carroll 2 Sv; James 5 H) HRs: KCM - Medwick (13); IND - none. Box Score It took 12 innings for Indianapolis to secure the sweep in a see-saw game. The ABC's were wasteful throughout, leaving 19--nineteen--runners on base in the contest. Joey Votto and Jake Stenzel had 4 hits each, with Votto driving in 3. Kansas City's Boog Powell tied the game in the top of the 9th with his 14th homerun of the season. Both bullpens were exhausted, so an unexpectedly strong performance from Octavio Dotel was desperately needed by Indianapolis. KCM 8 (Rosenthal 5-2; Kimbrel 4 B Sv; Russell 1 B Sv) - IND 9 (Dotel 1-1; James 6 H; Murphy 2 B Sv) [12 Innings] HRs: KCM - Powell (14); IND - Stenzel (8). Box Score

Series XXIX Featured Matchup: New York Black Yankees @ Baltimore Black Sox
Series preview here.
#Game 1: Jamie Moyer @ Dennis Martínez Dennis Martínez was solid, leading Baltimore to a 6-1 win in the opening game of the series. Dan McGann put Baltimore on the board with a 2-run double in the bottom of the 1st. Babe Ruth went deep to cut the lead in half (and drive in his 100th run of the year), but Baltimore took hold of the game int he bottom of the 4th on a 3 run blast from the very unlikely source of Brian Roberts. Roberts would add another RBI, singling home Manny Machado in the bottom of the 6th, and that was that. All 6 runs were charged to Jamie Moyer, who fell to 1-2. Martínez moved to 12-7 on the season, allowing only the one run, despite giving up 6 hits and 5 walks in just short of 7 innings. But the Black Yankees couldn't get the timely hit, and Buddy Groom and Gregg Olson were near-perfect in relief for Baltimore. NYY 1 (Moyer 1-2) @ BBB 6 (Martínez 12-7) HRs: NYY - Ruth (34); BBB - Roberts (1). Box Score Game 2: Red Ruffing @ Bill Byrd Red Ruffing and Bill Byrd matched zeros frame for frame until, with 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th, Frank Robinson took Ruffing deep for a 3-0 Black Sox lead. Babe Ruth launched his 35th dinger of the year in the 6th, and Albert Belle sent one into the seats in the 7th, chasing Byrd and making it a 1 run game, 3-2. Sean Marshall came in and was a little off, allowing 2 baserunners before having to leave injured. That brought in Don Bessent to face Ruth ... who flew out to centerfield to end the inning. A walk to Manny Machado and a double by Baby Doll Jacobson chased Ruffing, bringing in Dick Tidrow from the bullpen. Tidrow gave up a 2-run single to Larry Gardner, but escaped further damage leaving it 5-2 Baltimore. Bessent gave up Lou Gehrig's 20th homerun of the year to lead off the 8th, followed by singles from Mickey Mantle and Mike Schmidt. Bessent retired Belle, but gave up a single to Tom Herr to load the bases. That brought in Johnny Sain from a beleaguered Black Sox bullpen. Red Rolfe--hitting under .150 in the year--drove in 2 to tie the game and Munson singled to give New York their first lead of the game, 6-5 ... and turn it over to the mightily struggling Black Yankees pen. Gary Lavelle walked Dan McGann, but retired the side in order after that. Could the bullpen be on the verge of redemption? It seems so: Aroldis Chapman allowed a baserunner, but that was it, and New York had a come-from-behind victory. NYY 6 (Tidrow 1-1; Chapman 2 Sv; Lavelle 1 H) @ BBB 5 (Bessent 1-5; Sain 1 BSv; Marshall 8 H) HRs: NYY - Ruth (35), Belle (13), Gehrig (20; BBB - Robinson (26). Box Score #Game 3: Jack Scott @ Mike Mussina Things were looking great for Baltimore, as an RBI single from Frank Robinson and a solo shot from Manny Machado gave them an early 2-0 lead, with Mike Mussina looking absolutely dominant through 4 innings. But then came the 5th. A walk, a HBP, and a single loaded the bases, but Mussina struck out Eric Davis for the first out. But Mussina was unable to do much else: Thurman Munson singled in 2 to tie the game, Babe Ruth singled to load the bases, Lou Gehrig walked in a run, and Mike Schmdit singled in 2 more. That was it for Mussina, and even though John Wetteland induced a double-play ball from Don Mattingly, the damage was done with New York now leading 5-2. Dan McGann doubled in 2 runs in the bottom of the frame, making it a 5-4 game, but the Black Sox would get nothing else off the trio of Jack Scott, Gary Lavelle, and Goose Gossage. It wasn't for lack of opportunity: New York pitchers walked 8, and the Black Sox left 11 on base. The Black Yankees, meanwhile, would tack on via a 2-run double from Davis, Ruth's 36th homerun of the season, and a single from Munson who, along with Tom Herr, ended the day with 3 base hits. NYY 10 (Scott 11-5; Lavelle 2 H) @ BBB 4 (Mussina 4-3) HRs: NYY - Ruth (36); BBB - Machado (4). Box Score Game 4: Waite Hoyt @ Connie Johnson The Black Sox will turn to newcomer Connie Johnson as they try to salvage a split. Babe Ruth, on fire this series, did it again in the top of the 3rd, sending a pitch from Johnson into the right field stands after walks to Tom Herr and Thurman Munson. That gave the Black Yankees a 4-0 lead. Waite Hoyt needed double plays to get out of the 3rd and 4th, but he got them. Paul Blair put the Black Sox on the board in the 5th with a solo shot and, the following inning, Frank Robinson brought them to within 1 run with his 27th of the season. A hit by Baby Doll Jacobson and a walk to Blair chased Hoyt from the game. Which means the New York bullpen had another chance to prove itself ... Dick Tidrow gave up a single to tie the game. A homerun from Ken Singleton gave Baltimore the lead in the bottom of the 8th. A perfect 9th from Don Bessent sealed the deal, earning the series split for Baltimore. Larry Gardner had 3 hits for the Black Sox. NYY 4 (Tidrow 1-2; 2 B Sv) @ BBB 5 (Wetteland 1-0; Bessent 17 Sv) HRs: NYY - Ruth (37); BBB - Blair (9), Robinson (27), Singleton (16). Box Score

TWIWBL 37.0: Series XXIX Notes
August 5th
Awards Jack Taylor of the House of David was the WBL Pitcher of the Month for July, going 5-0 with a 1.51 ERA. The WBL Batter of the Month award went to the New York Black Yankees' Babe Ruth, who hit .363 for the month with 7 HRs. The Dog Days Not much has changed, but in the most wonderful of ways: all four divisions are tight, with multiple teams in the hunt for playoff spots. In the Bill James Division, the New York Gothams and the Detroit Wolverines are tied for first place, with the Wandering House of David (a scalding 29-14 since the all-star break) only 2.5 games back. All 3 teams are outperforming their Pythagorean projections by 2-3 games. Baltimore continues to have the best record in the league (technically, tied with Portland), but also continue to be unable to shake Chicago in the Cum Posey Division, 2 games back in second place. Chicago is +3 against their Pythagorean, while Baltimore is dead even with it, so the numbers at least would indicate that the Black Sox are safe with their lead. In the Effa Manley Division, Cleveland has the largest lead in the league, at 4.5 games ahead of the New York Black Yankees. But the underlying numbers pull them even closer--the Spiders have the edge in run differential, but at only 10 runs, it's pretty close to even. And if you trust the Pythagorean, their records should be identical. Especially with the Black Yankees (Seemingly? Perhaps? Maybe?) addressing their bullpen weakness, there is still a lot of baseball to be played here. As mentioned, in the Marvin Miller Division, being tied with Baltimore for the best record in the league keeps Portland in first place. But Birmingham, who are 31-13 since the all star break, seems unstoppable, having pulled to within 2.5 games of the Sea Dogs. All races to watch! Performance Batters Just last series, Ruth was in danger of leading his league lead in HRs. He's gone deep in 4 straight games, creating some distance between himself and the rest of the crowd. I keep waiting for this list to condense, but it keeps not cooperating. Top 2 in all categories, league leader in bold. Dick Allen (CAG). 309/378/543. 10 3B. Ty Cobb (DET). 346/391/569. Johnny Bench (IND). 306/414/602. 5.3 WAR. Mike Fiore (CAG). 240/400/400. 84 BB. Bobby Grich (LAA). 285/375/484. 38 2B. Rickey Henderson (SFS). 252/385/339. 84 BB, 78 SB. Elrod Hendricks (HOD). 300/360/648. Kent Hrbek (POR). 303/379/592. 33 HR. Joe Jackson (CAG). 333/420/584. 89 R. Reggie Jackson (SFS). 332/446/610. Stan Musial (KCM). 337/398/597. 144 H, 40 2B. Pitchers Same as with the batters, top 2 in all categories, league leaders in bold. Starters For now the logjam of wins has begun to break a little as the league has its first 3 13-game winners, with 2 others at 12. I've included all 5 in the listings, making it a little longer than before. That said, Guidry is really the only one not having an excellent season--he's striking a lot of batters out, but that's about it. Gerrit Cole (LAA). 13-6, 4.40. Don Drysdale (BRK). 7-5, 3.48. 1.16 WHIP. Lefty Grove (SFS). 11-7, 3.84. 162 K. Ron Guidry (NYY). 6-9, 4.56. 159 K. Pat Malone (CLE). 13-5, 3.83. Christy Mathewson (NYG). 13-6, 3.55. Alejandro Peña (BBB). 10-7, 3.28. 3.14 FIP, 4.9 WAR. Eddie Plank (SFS). 9-5, 3.90. 1 Sv, 3.31 FIP. Stephen Strasburg (HOU). 7-6, 3.21. 3.8 WAR. Jack Taylor (HOD). 11-8, 3.15, 1.15 WHIP. Relievers Walsh is the outlier here and is next in line to be moved into the starting lineup for Chicago. 33 IP for rate stats. Terry Adams (CLE). 2-6, 3.35. 26 Sv., 1 H. Mike Henneman (DET). 1-5, 4.50. 32 Sv. Ken Howell (SFS). 4-4, 2.10. 4 Sv, 8 H. 0.99 WHIP. Sean Marshall (BAL). 5-0, 1.79. 1 Sv, 8 H, 0.98 WHIP. Mike Norris (NYG). 4-3, 1.50. 4 Sv, 11 H. Ron Reed (PHI/CLE). 0-5, 4.18. 3 Sv, 16 H. Ron Robinson (SFS). 4-3, 3.40. 1 Sv, 16 H. Ed Walsh (CAG). 6-3, 3.05. 4 H, 3.01 FIP. Brian Wilson (NYG). 1-0, 1.05. 23 Sv, 2.59 FIP. Streaks The House of David's Ryne Sandberg kept his hitting streak alive, extending it to 22 games--only 1 behind Ruth's league record. He's also scored in 14 straight games, setting a new record in the process. Results Series XXIX Sweeps Indianapolis ABC's over Kansas City Monarchs Birmingham over Homestead Grays Taking 3 out of 4 in Series XXIX House of David over Ottawa Mounties Houston Colt 45's over Philadelphia Stars Portland over Cleveland San Francisco Sea Lions over Miami Cuban Giants Series XXIX Splits Memphis Red Sox @ New York Gothams Detroit @ Brooklyn Royal Giants Chicago @ Los Angeles Angels New York Black Yankees @ Baltimore

TWIWBL 37.1: Series XXIX Notes - Bill James Division
#Detroit Wolverines
Kevin Hart will be out about 4 weeks, meaning a trip to the DL is in order. Mickey Lolich was recalled--again. Oscar Gamble went deep twice, giving him 25 on the season, and drove in 4, leading Detroit to a 6-4 win over Brooklyn. Ty Cobb added 3 hits, including his 18th dinger of the season, and 7 decent innings from Hank Aguirre (now 5-9) set the stage for Mike Henneman's league-leading 32nd save of the season. #Los Angeles Angels 2 homeruns and 5 RBIs from Don Buford led Los Angeles to an 11-4 thrashing of Chicago. Doug Radar had 3 hits and upped his league leading RBI total to 109 with 4. Jason Vargas--knocked around in his first few appearances--picked up the win with 4.1 innings of 2-hit ball. Gerrit Cole finally got his 13th win of the year as the Angels shellacked the American Giants, 12-3. Carlos Delgado had a grand slam and a ground rule double for 6 RBIs and Ron Hassey added 3 hits as Cole improved to 13-6. #Memphis Red Sox Norwood Gibson, ineffective all year, was sent to AAA with Nixey Callahan (also, you know, ineffective all year) brought back up for the start. Sammy Sosa's talent has been undeniable--the ball just explodes off the 24 year old's bat. But he hasn't put much together, and while he's hitting more with Memphis than he did with the House of David, he's still not doing much. So perhaps his 3 hit game with a double and a homerun in an 8-6 win over the Gothams is the start of something for Sosa. #New York Gothams Christy Mathewson became the WBL's first 13 game winner, allowing 1 unearned run over 6+ innings in a 10-1 victory over Memphis. #Wandering House of David Bob Rush was masterful, tossing a complete game, 3-hit shutout in a 9-0 win over Ottawa. Pete Browning had 4 hits including 3 doubles, and Dan Ford and Richie Hebner added 3 hits each. Elrod Hendricks went deep twice, giving him 31 on the year, but it wasn't enough as the House of David lost 8-5 to Ottawa.

TWIWBL 37.2: Series XXIX Notes - Cum Posey Division
#Baltimore Black Sox
The hits keep coming for Baltimore's pitching staff as Sean Marshall--perhaps the most effective reliever in the league--will miss about 7 months with a shoulder injury. AAA closer BJ Ryan was recalled. #Chicago American Giants Carlton Fisk hit 2 homeruns including a grand slam to lead Chicago to a 7-4 victory over Los Angeles. Fisk drove in 5, Eddie Collins had 3 hits, and the just-recalled Kevin Mitchell went 2-for-4. Here's one way to win a game in extra innings: 5 walks, an HBP, a wild pitch, 2 singles, and a 3-run homerun from Joe Jackson. All in all, 9 runs, and a 15-6 victory over Los Angeles in 11 innings. #Houston Colt 45s Pete Hill was hit in the head, and will miss a week or two with concussion like symptoms. Harry Stovey was recalled from AAA, with hopes of improving the power off the bench for Houston. The rest of the series against Philadelphia was a showcase for Houston's pitching. First, Toad Ramsey allowed 1 run in 7 innings. Tug McGraw--yet to be scored on in the WBL--pitched a perfect 8th and Billy Wagner picked up his 16th save in the 2-1 victory. The next day, Stephen Strasburg, Chad Qualls, and Brad Lidge combined on a 5-hit shutout (all singles). Craig Biggio drove in 3 of Houston's 4 runs, 2 on his 6th homerun of the season. Finally, Houston's 5-2 win over the Stars ended up transforming the Colt 45's pitching staff: Bones Ely struck out 7 in 3 innings, but left the game hurt. Dock Ellis and Scott Erickson have also pitched themselves out of the WBL, with Jim Kern, Ice Box Chamberlain, and Kyle Kendrick being recalled. #Ottawa Mounties A Larry Walker shot in the top of the 5th seemed to make the game safe, but Ottawa needed a three run homer from Carlos Beltrán in the top of the 9th to cement the victory over the House of David. Greg Holland got the win after a solid start from Kirk Reuter.

TWIWBL 37.3: Series XXIX Notes - Effa Manley Division
#Cleveland Spiders
A solid start from Pat Malone moved him into a tie for the league lead in victories as Cleveland downed Portland 6-4. Malone is now 13-5 on the year, which ties him for the WBL lead in wins. #Homestead Grays Rick Reichardt's 4 RBIs on 2 homeruns--his 18th and 19th of the year--weren't enough as the Grays fell to the Black Barons 11-8. #Philadelphia Stars Pete Alexander's return lasted just under 4 innings. He was pitching OK, but strained an oblique, and will miss about a week. Alexander was placed on the DL, with Don Carman called up from AAA. Jaret Wright was the hard-luck loser despite only giving up 4 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings in one of his better performances of his year against Houston. Wright fell to 3-8 in a game where Aaron Judge's first career homerun was the only tally the Stars could manage.

TWIWBL 37.4: Series XXIX Notes - Marvin Miller Division
#Birmingham Black Barons
The newcomers just keep delivering. Adrián González went deep twice and is sporting an OPS nearly 300 points higher than his time with Chicago and the newly acquired Andy Pettite moved to 2-0 with Birmingham with 7 strong innings as the Black Barons defeated Homestead 8-2. #Brooklyn Royal Giants Beals Becker hit 2 homeruns, putting him in the 40/20 club (20 homers, 41 steals), but it wasn't enough as the Royal Giants fell 6-4 to Detroit. #Portland Sea Dogs It took an injury to stop the force known as Greg Litton. As the utility player hit the DL, Portland recalled Fred Dunlap from AAA. Dunlap, who started the year at 2B for the Sea Dogs, hit even less than Litton in that stretch, as inconceivable as that seems. Litton went out with a bang, getting 3 hits in the game where he was injured. Gil Hodges also had 3 hits, including his 24th homerun of the year, in a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over Cleveland. Portland's 6-2 victory in the 3rd game was notable for a few things: 5 runs in the last 2 innings; another strong performance by Joséito Muñoz; a key homerun by Gavvy Cravath (his first as a Sea Dog); more hits from Gary Pettis, who moved his average back over .400; and a decent showing by Dunlap, looking to stay in the bigs this time. Mike Cuellar moved to 11-6, despite only 1 start. #San Francisco Sea Lions With Reggie Jackson's return from the DL, the Sea Lions chose to send 18 year old John Beckwith to AAA in hopes of more regular at-bats, keeping Jimmie Foxx at the WBL level. Tim Hudson put in another strong start in Jackson's first game back, allowing 1 earned run in 7 innings. Six Sea Lions--including Jackson--had 2 hits in the 9-2 victory.

Series XXX Preview: Cleveland Spiders @ Chicago American Giants
We focused on Cleveland just 2 series ago, in Series XXVIII, as well as in Series XIX and VII while Chicago was featured in Series XXII, Series XX, and Series VI.
Neutral viewers will be rooting for Chicago: if they do well, they will close their gap with Baltimore in the Cum Posey Division while helping pull the Spiders back to within reach of the New York Black Yankees in the Effa Manley Division. Cleveland Spiders Not much has changed for Cleveland since we last saw them: the starting pitching is still excellent, if without a truly dominant front of the rotation arm. Pat Malone is 13-5, but really the quintet of Malone, Stan Coveleski, Cy Young, Bill Steen, and Mel Harder are fairly interchangeable. Strong pitching throughout the rotation is clearly an edge on other teams. Probably the most important question on the mound for Cleveland is if Ron Reed can regain the form he had with Philadelphia. The offense continues to revolve around Ron Blomberg (335/405/636, 32 HR, 91 RBI), John Ellis (288/349/540, 19 HR) and Jake Stahl (279/340/529, 20 HR). The offensive questions remain the same: Sammy Strang gets on base, but does little else at 3B, and SS Arky Vaughan is still an unknown quantity since being acquired a few days ago. Perhaps the biggest challenge is how to get Tris Speaker (385/467/846 in only 15 PAs) some more plate appearances. Kenny Lofton (296/379/391) has done well in CF, meaning Speaker is blocked at his primary position, but the team does need to know if Speaker can maintain anything close to that level of performance. Before the series, the commissioner's office finally approved the inclusion of Stan Bahnsen in the Spiders' trade with Homestead. Bahnsen was sent to AAA for the meantime. Chicago American Giants While not yet following Indianapolis into the uncharted waters of a 6-man rotation, Chicago does need to do something to get Ed Walsh more innings. Tricky Nichols leads the staff with a 12-6 record, but there's really not a lot between Nichols, Dick Rudolph, Mark Buehrle, Ben Sheets, and the newly-acquired David Price. But they're all a clear notch below Cleveland's starters. Closer AJ Minter is--finally--back from his stint on the DL. OF Magglio Ordoñez was the odd man out, with the American Giants preferring a deeper staff to Ordoñez' glove in RF. Chicago has 4 batters with an OPS over 900--RF Joe Jackson (333/420/584), 1B/DH Frank Thomas (312/425/535), 2B Eddie Collins (313/405/531), and 3B Dick Allen (309/378/543). The rest of the lineup is above-average as well--LF Duffy Lewis has 23 HRs, SS Freddy Parent continues to produce at an all-star level since being acquired from Ottawa, CF Mike Fiore has an OBP of .400 and C Carlton Fisk's .800 OPS is excellent for a backstop.

Series XXX Best Games
No real theme this time, just three close contests and checking in on the New York Black Yankees' revamped bullpen.
Miami Cuban Giants @ New York Black Yankees, Game #2 Down 2-0 and 4-2, the New York Black Yankees scored the last 5 runs of the game in a 7-4 victory over Miami. Most importantly, the reconstructed New York bullpen provided 3.2 innings of scoreless, 2-hit relief to close out the game, with Aroldis Chapman picking up his 3rd save since being acquired. As is often the case, Miami was nearly totally reliant on José Canseco, who had 3 hits and 3 RBIs, including his 29th homerun of the year. Ryan Braun also had 3 hits for Miami. MCG 4 (Pedroso 6-6; López 1 B Sv) @ NYY 7 (Burnett 3-2; Chapman 3 Sv; Cormier 1 H) HRs: MCG - Canseco (29); NYY - Mattingly (24). Box Score Baltimore Black Sox @ Memphis Red Sox, Game #2 Baltimore held an early 4-2 lead, but Memphis exploded in the 5th inning, with Ted Williams' 3-run shot being the key hit. That put the Red Sox in front, 6-4. It wouldn't last very long: RBI hits from Bryce Harper and Manny Machado gave the lead back to the Black Sox, but another 3 run homerun, this one from Vern Stephens, put Memphis back ahead by 1 run at 9-8. The Red Sox's closer, Jonathan Papelbon, took the mound in the top of the 9th. He pitched decently, but a single by Paul Blair, an error by Memphis'3B, Wade Boggs, and a sacrifice fly from Larry Gardner tied the game. Papelbon and Baltimore's Joe Beggs traded scoreless frames through the 11th, but in the 12th, Frank Robinson hit a long homerun off Bill Doak, his 29th of the season, to put the Black Sox ahead, 10-9. Baltimore's bullpen was pretty stretched, but Johnny Sain and Buddy Groom combined to successfully close out the game. BAL 10 (Sain 9-7; Groom 2 Sv; Wetteland 1 B Sv) @ MEM 9 (Doak 1-3; Callahan 1 H; Bell 4 H; Wakefield 1 B Sv; Papelbon 3 B Sv) [12 Innings] HRs: BAL - Wallace (5), Robinson (29); MEM - Williams (23), Stephens (6). Box Score Brooklyn Royal Giants @ Ottawa Mounties, Game #3 Pitching lines can be deceptive, right? Brooklyn's Tommy Hanson looks to have been thoroughly average, giving up 4 runs in 5 innings. But he turned in an solid start, fanning 9 but suffering from giving up 2 homeruns (to Carlos Beltrán and Gary Carter) and an ineffective outing from Dave Von Ohlen, who allowed both inherited runners to score. Brooklyn used a 3 run shot from Ron Cey to keep the game tied at 5 after 7 innings, but were unable to manage anything late, as Monk Dubiel, Randy Johnson, and Ryan Dempster combined to allow only 1 hit over the final 3 innings. Ottawa's Larry Parrish hit a walkoff homerun to give the Mounties the victory. BRK 5 (Gagne 4-5; Von Holen 4 H; Hildenberger 2 B Sv) @ OTT 6 (Dempster 3-1) HRs: BRK - Cey (18); OTT - Carter (15), Beltrán (8), Parrish (4). Box Score Wandering House of David @ Homestead Grays, Game #4 Homestead got off to a great start as Mike Epstein hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first. But the House of David clawed back, scoring in 3 different innings to tie the game at 4. The Grays again responded with the long ball, with Davey Johnson hitting a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the frame, but again we were quickly tied with Ron Santo going deep in the 7th. And there we stayed for 4 more innings, until the House of David's Bruce Sutter--asked to stretch into a second inning--gave up a triple to Chief Wilson and a 2-run shot to Rick Reichardt for a walk-off victory for the Grays. Homestead's duo of Cliff Lee and Dave Giusti combined for 4 innings of 2-hit relief. The standout performance of the game--by far--came from the House of David's Pete Browning, who had 5 hits in 6 at-bats, raising his average to .361 in the process. If he stays healthy, Browning should take over the WBL lead in batting within the month. HOD 6 (Sutter 2-3) @ HOM 8 (Giusti 2-0; Zambrano 2 B Sv) [11 Innings] HRs: HOD - Santo (13); HOM - Epstein (20), Johnson (13), Reichardt (20). Box Score

Series XXX Featured Matchup: Cleveland Spiders @ Chicago American Giants
Series preview here.
#Game 1: Cy Young @ Dick Rudolph A win would pull Chicago to within a game of Baltimore, who lost in surprising fashion earlier in the day. It certainly looks like a possibility as Dick Rudolph, one of the hottest pitchers in the league, takes on Cleveland's Cy Young, who has cooled off noticeably in recent starts. Early, Young regained his form and Rudolph maintained his: both hurlers had shutouts through 4 innings. That lasted until the bottom of the 6th, when a double from Joe Jackson and a triple--a TRIPLE--from Frank Thomas put Chicago up, 1-0. The American Giants bench then lost their collective mind, putting on a suicide squeeze (when Duffy Lewis missed the bunt, Thomas was, predictably, dead meat at the plate). Rudolph lasted until one out in the 8th, when he was relieved by Hoyt Wilhelm. Tris Speaker delivered a pinch-hit single, but a wild pitch plated Chuck Knoblauch to tie the game. A third run scored on an error, putting Cleveland ahead 3-1, and making Rudolph's fine performance all for naught. John Ellis took Wilhelm deep in the top of the 9th, putting Cleveland ahead, 2-1. Terry Adams made it interesting, walking three in the bottom of the frame, but Jack Doyle grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the game. CLE 3 (Gearrin 2-8; Adams 27 Sv) @ CHA 1 (Wilhelm 3-4, 1 B Sv) HRs: CLE - Ellis (20); CHA - none. Box Score #Game 2: Mel Harder @ Tricky Nichols Each team had a good chance to score in the opening frame, but Joe Jackson nailed a runner at the plate for the 3rd out in the top of the frame and Mel Harder got a nice play from Arky Vaughan at SS with two on base to close out the bottom half. Cleveland would take the lead in the top of the 4th when Tricky Nichols walked Ron Blomberg and gave up doubles to John Ellis and Jake Stahl, giving the Spiders a 2-0 lead. Johnny Bates added an RBI single in the 5th while Harder was superb, tossing a 2-hit shutout through 5 innings. Nichols was chased in the 6th, but his replacement, Ken Sanders, plunked Sammy Strang to bring in Cleveland's 4th run. Harder was running on fumes, but had still only given up 2 hits through 7. With 1 out in the 9th--and having thrown 130 pitches--Harder gave up a double to Duffy Lewis and was replaced by Chuck Porter, who completed the combined 3-hit shutout. CLE 4 (Harder 4-1) @ CAG 0 (Nichols 12-7) HRs: none. Box Score #Game 3: Pat Malone @ David Price Pat Malone--who???--tries to become the first pitcher in the league to reach 14 wins as Cleveland looks to cement a series win. Malone will have to wait, as the game was canceled due to rain, to be made up as part of a doubleheader the following day, but the opening game featured the same matchup, with Malone taking on Chicago's David Price. Price struggled in the first, giving up a run on a double by Lance Berkman, but induced an inning ending double play from Louis Santop to escape with the score 1-0 Cleveland. Price settled down after that, allowing only the 1 run on 3 hits through 5; Malone was sailing along with a 2-hit shutout as well. That lasted until the 6th, when Duffy Lewis singled in 2 with a 2 out knock. Dick Allen followed with his 19th homerun of the year, pushing the American Giants lead to 4-1. Both pitchers made it through 7 full innings, with the score unchanged. Akinori Otsuka was greeted by a single by Jake Stahl, and another by Ron Blomberg. Chicago's LF, Duffy Lewis, had Stahl dead for rights at 3B, but his throw was high for his first error of the year, scoring Stahl and putting Blomberg at second with no outs. Otsuka settled down, however, and the Spiders could only manage the single run, cutting the lead to 4-2. AJ Minter pitched a perfect 9th for his 20th save, giving Chicago a chance to even the series in the second half of the doubleheader. CLE 2 (Malone 13-6) @ CAG 4 (Price 1-0; Minter 20 Sv; Otsuka 3 H) HRs: CLE - none; CAG - Allen (19). Box Score #Game 4: Bill Steen @ Mark Buehrle Chicago's Mark Buehrle will take on the Spiders' Bill Steen in the nightcap as the American Giants try to earn a series split by sweeping the twinbill. Steen gave up Joe Jackson's 25th homerun in the bottom of the first for an early 2-0 lead for Chicago. Duffy Lewis and Mike Fiore would add RBI singles, increasing the lead to 4-0 while Buehrle was spinning a 4-hit shutout through 6 innings, despite 2 errors in the field behind him. Buehrle was relieved by Ed Walsh with 2 outs in the 7th. Despite being greeted by a pinch-hit double by Johnny Bates, Walsh got out of the inning with the shutout preserved, and proceeded to close out the game as an 8-hit combined shutout. Chicago added 2 more runs--the first on an error by Lance Berkman, the second on a solo shot by Carlton Fisk. Jackson ended the game with 3 hits, as did José Abreu, who had been mired in a horrible slump. CLE 0 (Steen 8-3) @ CAG 7 (Buehrle 9-8) HRs: CLE - none; CAG - Jackson (25), Fisk (10). Box Score

TWIWBL 38.0: Series XXX Notes
August 9th
There was a single game on August 9th: the Indianapolis ABCs visited the House of David to makeup a game rained out earlier in the year. And what a game it was ... The ABCs Willie Mitchell has struggled a bit since joining the starting rotation, but he's still been effective; here he would be opposed by the House of David's Frank Sullivan. Mitchell struggled early, giving up 4 runs in the first two innings on a 2-run single from Joe Harris and an RBI triple from Dan Ford. Both are stories of note: Harris, a 35 year old minor league veteran, has hit well over .300 since being recalled a few weeks ago and Ford, an injury fill in early in the season, has blossomed, keeping his average over .300 with some power in becoming the House of David's starting RF. But Mitchell settled down after that, not allowing a run through 7 innings. In the meantime, the ABCs scratched and clawed their way back with 2 in the 6th, 1 in the 7th, and a solo homerun from Dave Henderson in the 8th to tie the game. Anthony Rizzo singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame as the game was handed over to two expended bullpens. Indianapolis would get a pinch-hit, 2-run shot in the top of the 9th from Bob Bescher to take the lead, but Harris would answer with a 2-out solo shot in the bottom of the frame to send us to extra innings. The 10th was scoreless, but after Ford reached on an error, Harris doubled him home to win the game. Harris drove in 4 on 4 hits, and Ryne Sandberg and Jim Edmonds added 3 hits apiece for the winning side. Pete Browning went 1 for 6, edging closer and closer to qualifying for the league lead in batting (he currently sits at .358). IND 6 (Carroll 2-4, 2 B Sv) @ HOD 7 (Downs 3-2; Niedenfuer 3 H; Smith 1 B Sv) [11 Innings] HRs: IND - Henderson (10), Bescher (14); HOD - Harris (4). Box Score Awards The House of David's Elrod Hendricks was named the WBL Player of the Week, hitting .474 with a whopping 5 homeruns during 19 at-bats over the past 7 games. Performance Some random statistical accomplishments ... The New York Black Yankees' Eric Davis leads the Power/Speed combos, with 30 homeruns and 57 steals. Five other players have at least 20 of each, with Brooklyn's Beals Becker (21 HRs and 42 SBs) being the next highest total. Davis' teammate Don Mattingly has 24 homers and only 26 strikeouts. The New York Gothams' Jimmy Sheckard and Willie Davis of the Philadelphia Stars have yet to hit into a doubleplay. The Chicago American Giants' Dick Allen is the only player in the league in double digits in doubles (21), triples (10), and homeruns (19). Batters Standard stuff: top 2 in all categories, leader in bold. Babe Ruth of the New York Black Yankees has put some distance between the rest of the homerun hitters. He and the Los Angeles Angels' Doug Radar are the dominant offensive players, but Ruth is clearly the man. Dick Allen (CAG). 303/371/538. 10 3B. Johnny Bench (IND). 302/410/598. 5.4 WAR. Pitchers Same as the batters: top 2 in all categories, leader in bold. Starters Pitchers keep passing up their opportunities to lead the league in wins: currently 3 are tied with 13 wins each. Jack Taylor of the House of David is emerging as perhaps the best starter in the league. Bill Byrd (BAL). 12-3, 3.18. Gerrit Cole (LAA). 13-6, 4.40. Don Drysedale (BRK). 7-6, 3.59. 1.16 WHIP. Baltimore's Sean Marshall will miss the rest of the season through injury, but may still end up leading the relievers in WHIP at the end of the season. 33 minimum IP for rate stats. Terry Adams (CLE). 2-6, 3.26. 27 Sv; 1 H. Watty Clark (BRK). 3-2, 1.82. 21 Sv. 1.01 WHIP. Mike Henneman (DET). 1-5, 4.50. 32 Sv. Sean Marshall (BAL). 5-0, 1.79. 1 Sv; 8H. 0.98 WHIP. Long live the king! Boog Powell of the Kansas City Monarchs' has now reached base in 48 straight games, surpassing the Black Yankees' Thurman Munson's mark of 43 games. Ryne Sandberg's hitting streak ended at 22, tying him with Munson for 2nd place behind Ruth's 23. During that streak, Sandberg scored in 15 straight games, setting the league record, but Ruth has scored in his last dozen contests, so we'll see if he can reclaim that particular mark. Baltimore's Frank Robinson has hit a homerun in 4 consecutive games, 1 shy of the league record. Two pitchers are threatening the Black Yankees' Red Ruffing's league record of 24 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. The House of David's Jack Taylor has a 21 inning streak and Birmingham's Greg Maddux is at 20 innings.
