Walkers news: Oct. 1 -- St. Louis 7, Quad City 2

Record: 94-64, 1st, 10.5 GA Cedar Rapids -- NL South clinched
Zach Hunsicker took a shutout into the ninith inning, and St. Louis routed Quad City 7-2 at Busch Stadium (1997).
Hunsicker (13-7) shook off a recent stretch of rough starts with eight scoreless innings.
He allowed five hits while striking out seven and not issuing a walk.
Hunsicker exited after hitting the Thunder's Ben Nelson to open the top of the ninth.
QC did manage to scrape out a pair of runs against reliever Nick Ruffalo, Myles Austin driving them both in with a double.
But Robby Albarran came on to retire the game's final two batters.
The River Walkers used the power of the long ball to pile up most of their runs.
Jean Carmona hit a three-run homer off QC starting pitcher Jose Castaneda to put St. Louis in front.
Jose Segura and Jordan Groshans hit solo homers, also off Castaneda in the third to make it 5-0.
A two-run homer in the fifth from Steve Rossi off Pascal Marcovicci capped the scoring for the Walkers.

Walkers news: Oct. 2 -- St. Louis 11, Quad City 8

Record: 95-64, 1st, 11 GA Cedar Rapids; NL South clinched
Jean Segura hit a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift St. Louis to an 11-8 win over Quad City at Busch Stadium (1997).
The victory gave the River Walkers a sweep of their three-game series against the Thunder.
Down 8-7 entering the bottom of the ninth, Thunder closer Craig Fritzler retired the first two St. Louis hitters.
But things changed when Daniel Becerra and Steve Rossi delivered back-to-back singles.
Jordan Groshans then coaxed a walk to load the bases.
Segura unloaded them when he blasted a 0-1 pitch from Fritzler 416 feet over the right-field wall.
It gave Segura 32 homers for the season.
A back-and-forth game, QC had gone up 8-7 in the top of the seventh when Ben Nelson hit a two-run homer off Walkers reliever Yeison Santos.
In the fifth, St. Louis had turned a 6-5 deficit into that 7-6 lead when Groshans hit his 43rd homer of the season, and second of the game, a two-run round-tripper off Omar Garcia.
Down 5-4, the Thunder had scored twice times in the top of the fifth -- and they didn't need a home run -- to move ahead 6-5
Nelson drove in both the runs with a bases-loaded single off reliever Ricky Cisneros.
.Way earlier, the Thunder had scored four times in the top of the second -- Jacob Gonzalez had a two-run double off Walkers starter Lenyn Crisp -- to go up 4-0.
St. Louis wiped that deficit out with five in the bottom of the third.
Steve Rossi hit a three-run homer and Groshans cranked his first of the game, both off QC starter Danny Garza.
Crisp lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on five hits. He
Cisneros pitched 1.2 innings, getting the game to the seventh.
Santos (0.2 IP) had his issues in the eighth, and Robby Albarran had to come on to finish the inning.
Argenis Batista (3-3) had his best outing in a while, with two scoreless innings, and came out of it with his third win of the season.

Walkers news: Oct. 3 -- St. Louis 8, Madison 1

Record: 96-64, 1st, 12 GA Springfield and Cedar Rapids; NL South and NL homefield clinched
Angel Tiburcio finished one out shy of a shutout in his final start before the postseason, as St. Louis downed Madison 8-1 at Busch Stadium (1997).
Tiburcio (10-9) dominated until the ninth when he seemed to run out of gas.
He struck out the inning's first two batters, before allowing three straight hits -- a double to Armando Trevino, a single to Yan C. Dixon and a double to Emanuel Feron, which ended the shutout -- which forced St. Louis to go to its bullpen.
Cory Tiller got the call, and got Jason Nolan to ground out to end it.
Overall, Tiburcio's line read one run on five hits over 8.2 innings. He struck out 10 and walked two.
The game was pretty much over by the time it got to the top of the ninth,
Solo homers from Daniel Becerra in the bottom of the first and Jean Carmona in the fifth, both off Muskies starter Danny Munos, put the Walkers ahead 2-0.
St. Louis broke it open with four runs in the seventh.
Steve Rossi drove in the final two runs with a single off Daniel Johnson.
The deficit grew by two in the eighth, TIburcio driving in the first run with a double.
In addition to a strong mound effort, Tiburcio was 2 of 3 at the plat with a run scored and an RBI.

Walkers news: October 4 -- Madison 4, St. Louis 2

Record: 96-55, 1st, 11 GA Springfield and Cedar Rapids
Madison rookie Mario Martinez shut out St. Louis over the first six innings, and the Muskies won 4-2 at Busch Stadium (1997).
Martinez (2-0) , making just his second start in the majors, allowed just two hits, although he did walk four while striking out two.
Madison broke in front in the top of the third when Chris Duncan led off with a single off River Walkers starter Jesse McNaboe.
Duncan ended up on third when McNaboe misplayed a bunt by Martinez, making a two-base throwing error.
Duncan scored on a Wyatt Olson ground out.
Aramondo Trevino and Yan C. Dixon hit consecutive one-out homers off McNaboe in the sixth to make it 3-0.
Joseph King worked a pair of innings in relief for the Muskies, giving up a run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Rick Scott.
Daniel Becerra hit his 20th homer of the season in the ninth off Madison closer Bobby Westerman, but he was still able to close out his 25th save.
