Koch and Makowski

So... the advice that I've received regarding the posting of George Brace images here boils down to this: images made in 1963 or earlier apparently are in the public domain and should be safe, but images made in 1964 and beyond carry a valid copyright. While I've been told that I can re-upload the images if I want, the "iffi-ness" of the situation leads me to err on the side of caution.

I will email the files to anyone who wants them (ask in a PM please, not in the thread).

Ed Farmer 1971

Seems to me someone's always looking for images of Ed Farmer. This one is a new eBay offering from The Cats Pajamas. It's dated 1983.

Fritsch One-Year Wonders

The reference to the Alan Koch image in the Fritsch set suggests a quick primer on those issues might be useful.

The first series features black and white images of the likes of Eddie Gaedel and Bobo Holloman from a variety of sources. But the second and third series are all Topps photographs.

The Topps Sports Director at the time Larry Fritsch of Fritsch Cards put out the two color sets was Bill Haber, one of the most prominent collectors and researchers of the time. It's usually his bold ballpoint pen lettering on the packets that turn up from time to time in which the negatives were stored. Whether Topps knew it or just Bill - whether Fritsch paid Topps or he didn't - the photos were either taken by or treated by (some of the colorized black and white images like those of Charlie Shoemaker and Jim Snyder) Topps.

Bottom line here is: Topps made no copyright claim on the images as they were published so within non-profit reason they're all fair game.

Ron Hunt 1963

Some Dexters back from the shop, in each case tonight, guys they caught in consecutive years with different teams.

The Dodger shot from 1967 is not the one chosen by Dexter for Hunt's card. That's a straight ahead portrait. But the two images are really close.

The Giants shot from 1968 seems to be the one Dexter issued.

Here's a (slightly) cleaner version of the image of the long-time Red Sox righty taken while he was with Detroit in 1967, and the one the company got of him with the Yankees in Spring Training, 1968.

Dexter used this image in its 1966 Angels set, but though it's nearly the same as the issued photo, the 1967 Giants pose is just slightly different.

BTW on the coaches' thread, I'm posting two more Dexters tonight: of long-time coaches George Myatt and Johnny Sain.

Checklist fix

From Folder GC, some omitted numbers (all Orioles, oddly)

651-652 John Shelby
653 Ralph Rowe
654 Allan Ramirez

Apparently, these are the only Vault appearances so far of both Rowe (O's coach) and Ramirez.

Alan Koch 1963

As shown below on the back of the Fritsch card, it's One-Year Winners, not One-Year Wonders. I do need to correct my previous post with regard to the year of the Koch card. It's 1983, not 1977. I had picked up the 1977 year from a Beckett check-list. It clearly states 1983 on the card.

The photo of Koch in a Senators uniform is from a website called dhs.demopolis.ws, where I found it in 2013.

Allan Ramirez was a major leaguer. He pitched in 11 games for the 1983 Baltimore Orioles.

Jay Hankins 1961

I was very fortunate to have had a terrific experience as a 7th grader when we were taught by a long term sub in Jay Hankins. I had great talks with Jay about baseball and he shared some great stories with me about his time in the big leagues and as a scout (Paul Molitor and Kirk Gibson scout stories were great) I interviewed him on an Fisher Price recorder and I still have that cassette tape somewhere about his baseball experiences.

He later went on to work in a larger role with the Phillies (serving as their scouting director from 1989-92) after he was my teacher.

I have gotten to know his son in recent years as he is a scout for the Tigers and is often covering kids at a lot of the games I attend....

Here is his Fritsch card...if anyone else has photos of Jay that would be great

Leon Roberts - Astros Request

Hey all, by chance does any one have a TV pic of Leon Roberts as an Astro?

I found a few of him as a Tiger on the Vault but none with Houston. Thanks in advance!

The attached photo shows Jay Hankins with the Shreveport Sports. It's from the Shreveport Times of April 17, 1959.

A photo of Hankins with the Kansas City A's is displayed on his baseball-reference record at:
