BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

5 March 2304

Green Money in No-Hitter

Derek Green took the mound for the first time in the 2304 season, and it probably will not get any better than this.

Green of Fort Hagen pitched a complete-game no-hitter with a sole walk of Jamaica Plain's Notorius Fugate preventing a perfect game. In the history of the CBO, the only perfect game was pitched against the Silve Shroud when Nordhagen Beach's Tommy Beach accomplished it on 30 August 2299.

In yesterday's game, Green's accomplishments will not go in the record books since the tournament does not count as official stats, but it was quite a feat in the Shroud's 8-0 win in Game One of the second round of the Nuka Cup Tournament.

One other standout in the game was Fort Hagen's Aaron Nuka who hit a grand slam in the 5th inning to extend the lead to 8-0 at that point.

Green threw 113 pitches, striking out eight and walking one.

2304 Season Pass Tournament

----------------------------------------------------------

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL, NWLB, and APYL Leagues

by Evan Guy

10 March 2304

Season Pass Tournament Begins Today

The 2304 Season Pass Tournament begins today in Bradberton with four neutral sites throughout the day. Fans have been offered "All-Day Passes" where they can attend all four games per day for a whopping 12+ hours of baseball entertainment.

Due to the Vim! League's victory in the Season Pass Series to end the 2303 season, all Vim! League teams will be seeded with an odd seed, while all Nuka World League teams will be issued an even seed. Dalton Farm, the defending champions of the 2303 season, is the #1 overall seed, while the NWL champs, the Cherry Ghoulrillas, are the second seed. All first-round matchups will be held with the highest seed playing against the lowest seed, and then going up and down that order with #8 vs #9 being the closest-ranked matchup of the first round.

Here are the first-round matchups of the double-elimination tournament:

Day 1
#1 Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers (VL) vs #16 Victory Cave Crickets (NWL) @World of Refreshment Field
#8 Grape Painted Ghouls (NWL) vs #9 Cranberry Island Hermit Crabs (VL) @Fizztop Mountain Park at Nuka-Town USA
#4 Quartz Star Force (NWL) vs #13 Grand Hotel Atoms (VL) @Ol' Sugartop Ballpark at Dry Rock Gulch
#5 Echo Lake Harbormen (VL) vs #12 Wild Gatorclaws (NWL) @Grandchester Mystery Mansion Park

Day 2
#2 Cherry Ghoulrillas (NWL) vs #15 National Park Gulpers (VL) @King Cola Park at Kiddie Kingdom
#7 Far Harbor Ghoul Whales (VL) vs #10 Dark Bloodworms (NWL) @John-Caleb Bradberton Honorary Field
#3 Acadia Acadians (VL) vs #14 Orange Tourists (NWL) @Angry Anaconda Field at Safari Adventure
#6 Quantum Nukalurks (NWL) vs #11 Eden Meadows Anglers (VL) @Star Core Stadium at the Galactic Zone

Unlike the Nuka Cup Tournament where teams play series, each game of the tournament is a single game. Teams that win their games move on, while teams that lose go to the loser's bracket. A second loss means elimination with the single team not to lose two games being declared the champions.

The top two seeds met in the finals last year, where the #1 Echo Lake Harbormen defeated the #2 Victory Cave Crickets, 5-3, to continue their momentum from the 2302 Season Pass Series victory over the Cave Crickets.

12 March 2304

Nuka Cup Tournament Fourth-Round Results

Each of the four brackets is now down to three teams apiece with only one undefeated team remaining in each bracket. Those four undefeated teams now move to their bracket finals where they will have a 1-0 series advantage in the Best of Five series played over a four-day stretch.

In Roxbury, #3 FHE swept #5 Quincy to eliminate the Gunners. In the winner's bracket matchup, the Roxbury Rad Sox won their home series, two games to one, over #2 Nordhagen Beach. The Yao Guai and Party Boys now meet for the right to try to win 3 out of 4 over the Rad Sox.

In Fort Hagen, the home hosts defeated #2 Diamond City, two games to one to place the Silver Shroud in the bracket finals after a 1-0, two-hitter by Mike Cartrette. The #4 Jamaica Plain Red Rockets swept #3 Sunshine Tidings to set up an SCA matchup between the Swatters and Rockets in the next round.

At University Point, #2 County Crossing struggled but ultimately prevailed, two games to one, over #5 Oberland. The #1 University Point Deathclaws also downed #3 Vault 81 to set up a matchup between the T-51s and Claws for the right to take on the Bloodbugs.

Finally, in Concord, the #6 Egret Ninjas stayed alive, downing #3 Lexington for the second time, two games to one. Egret will now face #1 Concord, which dropped its series to #2 Atom, two games to one.

15 March 2304

Nuka Cup Tournament Final Elimination Results

All four brackets are down to the final two teams, with each featuring a #1 vs #2 matchup.

In Roxbury, #2 Nordhagen Beach easily handled #3 FHE in a clean sweep. The Party Boys now will have to face host Roxbury in a five-game series played over four games with the Rad Sox starting with a 1-0 advantage. That means that the Sox need to win two games to win the series, while the Boys need three wins. This is true of every Bracket Final where the team coming out of the loser's bracket needs three wins to advance to the Nuka Cup Tournament Semifinals.

In Fort Hagen, #2 Diamond City defeated #4 Jamaica Plain, two games to one. The Swatters will now begin with a disadvantage against the host Silver Shroud.

At University Point, #1 University Point exacted revenge over #5 Oberland, winning the series two games to one. Now the Deathclaws will rematch with #2 County Crossing in the Bracket Finals.

Finally, in Concord, the #1 Radstags ended #6 Egret's run, three games to zero. The Stags will now rematch with the Atom Cats for the right to move into the semifinals against the winner of the University Point Bracket.

2304 Season Pass Tournament

Nuka News Update

by Evan Guy

15 March 2304

Season Pass Tournament Continues Today

The first five days of the 2304 Season Pass Tournament have now been completed and the 16 teams beginning are now down to eight.

The opening round saw three lower seeds snatching victory over the higher-seeded teams. Of those three, the most shocking was #14 Orange defeating the #3 Acadia Acadians, 4-2. #12 Wild also upset #5 Echo Lake, and #9 Cranberry Island edged #8 Grape.

In the first elimination round, #8 Grape dropped #16 Victory, #13 Grand Hotel ended #5 Echo Lake's tournament in two games, #3 Acadia bounced back to defeat #11 Eden Meadows, and #15 National Park got an upset win over #10 Dark.

In the second round of the winner's bracket, the biggest win was the Hermit Crabs overtaking #1 Dalton Farm, 13-2. #4 Quartz beat up on the #12 Gatorclaws, 13-3. #6 Quantum easily beat the #15 Tourists, 7-1. And #2 Cherry downed #7 Far Harbor, 5-1. This left just four undefeated teams in the tournament.

Teams who lost on Day 3 had to turn around and play again on Day 4. The Ghoul Whales were able to eliminate #8 Grape, Grand Hotel won the battle of the #13 vs #14 matchup over the Tourists, the #3 Acadians moved on with a win over the Gatorclaws, and Dalton Farm bounced back to knock out the #15 Gulpers.

Today's games will feature two winner's bracket and two loser's bracket games. At 12:05, it will be a #7 Far Harbor versus #13 Grand Hotel matchup. At 3:05, #9 Cranberry Island will take on #4 Quartz. At 6:05, a big matchup between #1 Dalton Farm and #3 Acadia will take place in an eliminator. Finally, at 9:05, #6 Quantum matches up against #2 Cherry.

2304 Season Pass Tournament

Nuka News Update

by Evan Guy

19 March 2304

Season Pass Tournament Continues Today

The Season Pass Tournament is nearing its end with just two teams remaining after nine days of play. We covered the first five days in our last update. Let's look at the next four days.

On Day 6, the last four of the undefeated teams faced off, while there were two more elimination games. In the winner's bracket, #4 Quartz was able to edge #9 Cranberry Island, 2-1. In the other game, #2 Cherry downed #6 Quantum, 5-4. In the elimination games, #7 Far Harbor defeated #13 Grand Hotel and #1 Dalton Farm eliminated #3 Acadia, 9-0.

On Day 7, there were two more elimination games based on losers in the winner's bracket against winners in the loser's bracket. In those games, Cranberry Island downed the Ghoul Whales, 5-4, and the Nukalurks bear the Fog Crawlers, 5-1.

Day 8 featured the last two undefeated teams and another elimination game. In the early game, the Ghoulrillas advanced again, defeating the Star Force, 7-5, and setting them up to play for the 2304 Season Pass Tournament Championship. In the late game, the Nukalurks stayed alive, eliminating the last Vim! League team in Cranberry Island, 2-1.

Day 9 was the last elimination game, pitting the Q teams of the Nuka World League, Quartz and Quantum. In that game, Quantum blasted ahead to defeat the Star Force, 8-2.

That leaves the Nukalurks vs Cherry in the finals for the Season Pass Tournament. Quantum must win two games, while the Ghoulrillas just need one. The teams will play Saturday. A Cherry win means the tournament is over, while a loss would mean a Sunday afternoon final.

2304 Nuka Cup

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

19 March 2304

Nuka Cup Tournament Brackets Complete

The four brackets have now concluded, and there are just four teams remaining to vie for the 2304 Nuka Cup Tournament banner. All four bracket finals included a four-game series with the first to three wins being named the bracket champion. The lone remaining undefeated teams were granted an automatic win in the final series.

In Roxbury, two of the CBO's best teams faced off in their four games with the Rad Sox starting out with a 1-0 series lead. In the first game, Eugene Gym got plenty of run support as his Sox defeated Nordhagen Beach, 7-5. In Game 2, Roxbury clinched the series when College Luckyman pitched 7.2 innings of shutout ball in a 7-0 Sox win. Games 3 and 4 both went to the Party Boys but did not matter in the series.

In Fort Hagen, the Silver Shroud also started with a 1-0 advantage. Unfortunately for them, the automatic win was the only win they could muster in the series. In Game 1, Diamond City overcame an early 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 win. In Game 2, X10-44 Mannson shut down the Shroud in an 8-1 victory. The Swatters clinched the series in Game 3, winning 7-1 behind Aldo Sanch's pitching. Diamond City completed the sweep by holding the Shround to one run yet again in Game 4, this time behind Sheng Kawolski in a 2-1 victory. The Swatters will next face their Railroad League rivals Roxbury in the semifinals series.

At University Point, the #1 Deathclaws were not able to overcome their early loss in the tournament, falling four games to one to County Crossing. The Bloodbugs started the series up 1-0 but lost Game 1, 6-4, to even the series 1-1. Then they won the next three, 8-5, 9-3, and 6-1 to move on to the semifinals.

Finally, in Concord, the #2 Atom Cats came to play, winning the series five games to zero. Up 1-0 in the series to start, the Cats got a 4-1 victory to put themselves a game away from clinching a semifinals berth. The Cats then won 9-4 to clinch the series in Game 2 before finishing off the Stags in Games 3 and 4, 4-0 and 10-3, respectively. Scruffy Taguchi threw a two-hitter in Game 3, walking two and striking out eight.

The semifinals and finals will take place as it traditionally does at The Great Green Jewel in Diamond City. Roxbury will take on Atom and Diamond City will face County Crossing. The winners go on to play for the championship, while the losers will meet in a consolation game.

While this is all just Pre-Season, again points for doing something unique with pre-season when it's often overlooked. I'll probably have something more witty to say though when it comes time to disagree with PAM however haha.

The lack of upsets in the Nuka Cup Tournament makes me nervous that there will be a bigger gap than I anticipate between the good and bad. It seems that there are always quite a few upsets, so to have all #1 vs #2 in the bracket finals was a surprise for me.

Season Pass Tournament Ends in Exciting Fashion

Game 31 was the end all, be all as the Quantum Nukalurks fought to win the final game in a 7-6 victory over the Cherry Ghoulrillas for the 2304 Season Pass Tournament crown. The Nukalurks won on Saturday, 7-3, to set up the game with no undefeated team remaining.

The final game was tied, 6-6, heading into the bottom of the 9th. With Justin Hodges on the mound for the Ghoulrillas, he got the first batter out before allowing Qunatum's Kell Leek to single. Dobbie Bloodworm then doubled to send Leek to third with one out. On the third pitch to Tyler Willams, Hodges threw a wild pitch, scoring Leek and sending the Nukalurks into a frenzy.

"This game was just insane," Leek, the former 1st-round pick, stated. "I wanted this game bad and I was not going to hesitate to score when that pitch bounced away from [Ricardo] Vega."

Vega was the game's MVP despite his team's loss. He was 3 for 5 with a home run, a run, and two RBI.

Quantum was up big, 5-0, after a big third inning. However, Cherry chipped away, taking its first lead in the top of the 7th, 6-5. The Nukalurks answered with a run in the 7th, tying the game at six runs apiece.

Seven different Nukalurks players had two or more hits. Leadoff hitter Chris Washington had the most, going 3 for 5 with a run scored.

I forget if it's ever come up, but you ever watch any SB Nation/Secret Base/Jon Bois videos? The one this comment specifically reminds me of is "The NCAA tournament is a loser machine", which I highly recommend you look up. I don't actually have anything insightful to say about the strength of various seeds in brackets, just that this is an interesting video on the subject from one of the modern great sports writers/entertainers haha.

I don't actually have anything insightful to say about the strength of various seeds in brackets, just that this is an interesting video on the subject from one of the modern great sports writers/entertainers haha.
Never saw it, but I'll check it out.

The Nuka Cup Tournament is down to its final two teams in the quest for the 2304 Nuka Cup Tournament crown. Both the Atom Cats of the Minutemen League and the Diamond City Swatters of the Railroad League earned their place, each winning two of three games. Those two teams will now face each other in a two game series with the first to two wins claiming the crown. The Roxbury Rad Sox and County Crossing Bloodbugs will meet in the battle for third place in what could be a Sole Survivor Series preview.

Atom Cats (#2 seed in Concord Bracket) vs Roxbury Rad Sox (#1 seed in Roxbury Bracket)

Game 1: Atom 0 vs Roxbury 4

The Rad Sox's Eugene Gym pitched eight shutout innings to earn the victory. Young Goodman was 2 for 4 with a home run, a run. and two RBI. The Cats' Justin Daros' 8th-inning error led to three unearned runs crossing the plate for the Sox to pull away.

Melon Sanderson of Atom was hot, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a run, and five RBI to lead his team to victory. Tied 6-6 in the 10th, Guru Bean singled in Deer Quickwalker for the walk-off victory.

The Cats earned their way into the Nuka Cup Tournament finals thanks to the solid pitching of Scruffy Taguchi and the bat of Earthbound Bussey. Taguchi pitched 6.0 shutout innings, allowing two hits, walking two, and striking out five. Chopsticks McWilliams earned the save. Bussey was 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and an RBI.

Game 1: Diamond City 1 vs County Crossing 0, 13 inn.

The Swatters' City Moore and the Bloodbugs' Urm Rehfeldt pitched shutouts through 7 innings before giving up time to their teams' bullpens. In the end, Waze Waiting's 13th-inning RBI single was the hit to end it.

2304 Nuka Cup

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

26 March 2304

Nuka Cup Tournament Finals

The Nuka Cup Tournament is complete, and we have a repeat champion. The Atom Cats won all three games in their series against Diamond City, taking the Cup for the second-straight season. Melon Sanderson was named the MVP, going 7 for 12 with three home runs, three walks, four runs scored, and four RBI.

Third Place Series: County Crossing Bloodbugs (#2 seed in University Point Bracket) vs Roxbury Rad Sox (#1 seed in Roxbury Bracket)

Game 1: County Crossing 7 vs Roxbury 8, 10 inn.

The Bugs' Long Hall had the best game, going 3 for 5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and four RBI, but it was the Sox who came out on top. Roxbury's Chris Connexx hit a 10th-inning, two-out, walk-off double, scoring Young Goodman from first after he walked the batter before. Dustin MacCready was 3 for 6 with two runs and two RBI.

Game 2: Roxbury 4 vs County Crossing 7

The Bloodbugs tied up the series thanks to the bat of Cy Thompson who went 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, three runs scored, and three RBI. The Rad Sox's Chris Connexx was 2 for 4 with a double, a run, and two RBI.

Game 3: County Crossing 2 vs Roxbury 0

The Bloodbugs took third place in the 2304 Nuka Cup Tournament in a pitchers' battle. Terrence Artman pitched 8.0 innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits, walking one, and striking out five. Cy Thompson was 3 for 4 with a double.

Finals: Diamond City Swatters (#2 seed in Fort Hagen Bracket) vs Atom Cats (#2 seed in Concord Bracket)

Game 1: Diamond City 1 vs Atom 3

Atom's Deedee Martinson and the Swatters' Sheng Kawolski battled for six innings, each allowing a single run. The Cats' Earthbound Bussey and Melon Sanderson both went deep in the bottom of the 7th off Diamond City's Raul Separza, lifting Atom to victory and a win away from repeating as the Nuka Cup Tournament champions.

Game 2: Atom 3 vs Diamond City 2, 13 inn.

It took 13 innings, but the Cats clinched the Cup by outscoring the Swatters 2-1 in the final frame. Melon Sanderson led off the inning with a home run, his second in the series and Deer Quickwalker added an insurance run with his own solo blast. Starters Pete Pembroke and City Moore each allowed one run in their no-decisions.

Game 3: Diamond City 0 vs Atom 6

The Cats completed the sweep by shutting down the Swatters. Bow Rome pitched 5.1 innings of shutout ball before giving way to Matt Rodrigue and Ryan Radaway to close out the game. Rabbit Forest was 3 for 4 with a home run, a run, and two RBI. Melon Sanderson added a home run, going deep in all three games and the fifth straight game going back to the semifinal round against Roxbury.

2304 CBO Preview

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

4 April 2304 - 4/4/04

2304 CBO Preview: Cats Prowl

The Commonwealth Baseball Organization is poised for its 2304 season, and the air is thick with anticipation. P.A.M., our trusted predictor, is back with her preseason forecasts. Last year, she incorrectly picked the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets to win it all. Let's see where her third eye takes us this season.

As the league braces for another round of exhilarating matches, predictions from the North Charles Association and the South Charles Association have surfaced, offering a glimpse into the upcoming haves and have nots. Let's dive into projected standings and key players to watch.

Brotherhood League: North's Clash

The North Charles Association's forecasts present an engaging outlook for the Brotherhood League. The County Crossing Bloodbugs lead the pack with a projected 78-42 record. The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys follow closely with 77 projected wins, promising fierce competition.

Additionally, the Easy Town Assaultrons, Salem Witch Hats, and Finch Farm Four Leafs are expected to be in the wildcard race. For The Slog, they may be looking at the potential 1st overall draft pick.

Institute League: The Battle for Good Enough

In the Institute League, predictions are equally intriguing. The Concord Radstags and Sunshine Tidings Chemists are set for an enthralling rivalry, both eyeing a 70-50 record. Based on these predictions, PAM has the Chemists as the team to take the tiebreaker.

The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud, defending NCA champs, are also seen as contenders with the Shroud expected to earn the 5th spot. Starlight and Lexington could battle for a playoff spot, while the Abernathy Adamantium are expected to dwell in the cellar. Packed with talent and determination, the Institute League promises captivating showdowns throughout the season.

South Charles Association: Competing to Excel

Shifting to the South Charles Association, the Atom Cats emerge as favorites in the Minutemen League, expected to secure 82 wins against 38 losses. Not far behind, the University Point Deathclaws are projected to pose a strong challenge with 76 anticipated wins, while PAM likes the Rockets to return to the playoffs in 2303 at the 5th spot. The bottom of the league is far away in talent from the top, with Goodneighbor, Spectacle Island, and Quincy all expected to finish 35 games or more behind the Cats.

In the Railroad League, the Roxbury Rad Sox are pegged to dominate with 80 wins. The FHE Yao Guai are anticipated to contend with their projected 71 victories. While no team is as bad as the Minutemen League expectations, the final four teams--including Diamond City--are expected to hover around .500

The Atom Cats and Roxbury Rad Sox are gearing up for an epic showdown in the South Charles Association with the winner likely to take the Sole Survivor Series over the Bloodbugs. In PAM's predictions, the 2304 Sole Survivor Series will go to the Cats.

Standout Performers: Hitters and Pitchers

The predictions also spotlight some of the league's top hitters and pitchers poised to leave an imprint in the upcoming season. Notable names in the NCA include Jonathan Angelou of Nordhagen Beach, Babs Rooth of the Bugs, and Lannie Tykeson of the Easy Town Assaultrons, all expected to shine at the plate. In the SCA, the top three predicted top hitters are Barker Cocoa of University Point, Harry Byrd of the Dwellers, and Tomas Jones of the Deathclaws.

On the pitching front, watch for Beachboy Nut of the Boys, Derek Green of the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud, and Ugio Church of Nordhagen Beach in the NCA. In the SCA, the best pitchers are Scruffy Taguchi of the Atom Cats, Sheng Kawolski of the Swatters, and Digger Vadim of Jamaica Plain.

As the countdown to the 2304 CBO season accelerates, both fans and players are immersed in anticipation. With teams ready to take the field and star talents geared up to deliver awe-inspiring performances, the stage is set for a season that promises unforgettable moments and fierce rivalries. Stay tuned for the opening pitch – we're in for another exciting journey in Commonwealth baseball!

I would much prefer that leagues stay better balanced. I would prefer all teams remain closer to the mean than to have this much disparity. I also noticed that some of the lower teams seemed to take a few heavier ratings hits. (Note: that is mostly anecdotal because I do not want to spend the time to confirm.)

One thing I might consider doing is to change the balanced approach to the CBO of special events to an unbalanced one based on current talent level. Just to give some insight to my procedures (as a reminder):

Every game day, I roll four dice. Rolling four of the same number triggers a supermax event. Three of the same number is a max event, two pairs is a medium event, and four in a row (with wrap around from 6 to 1) is a minimum event. If it's a medium or minimum event, I roll one die with the first number appearing from the sequence being the event number.

The events are: 1 - franchise event, 2 - trade, 3 - plus stats (means ratings), 4 - minus stats (means ratings), 5 - incident/leave/suspension, 6 - creature attack

I also generate a random number that correlates with a team and then another random number that is picked from numerical order of the players on the team selected.

So, if I rolled the following: 1-4-4-4 and then generated a 15, that would mean a CBO-level player from Quincy would get minus stats (basically roll x with a *10 loss to their overall/potential ratings). Since the Gunners will suck in 2304, what I might do instead is either skip that result or only allow teams with winning records to be allowed to be selected with that result. Maybe that would mean the stats gains go only to players on below average-bad teams and stats losses would only be for players on above average-good.

I'll think about it! I just hope that the NCA actually does have tight league races this season and that the SCA can find excitement some kind of way. I don't want it to be obvious who the 10 playoff teams are going to be by the midway point of the season.
