Warren Spahn

"Spahn will never get into the Hall of Fame. He won't quit pitching"...Stan Musial.

In late 1964, Spahn was sold by the Braves, after 25 years of service, to the New York Mets. In mid-season 1965, the Mets released him on waivers and the Giants immediately signed him. He was released at the conclusion of the 1965 season. He was 44 years old.

Arguably, he was the greatest left-hander in the history of the game.

Lindy McDaniel 1955

Let's put up a few lingering Dexters - this of the old "Pitching for the master" reliever and eldest of the countless McDaniel brothers, Lindy, with the Giants in Spring Training 1967.

Lee Elia 1966

Then, just a shortstop who made it to the majors with the White Sox after years in the Phils' system, a middle infielder with the unlikely uniform number of 49. Later - one of the best-remembered of obscure big league managers (I'll spare you the transcript; if you somehow have not heard Elia's glorious meltdown please find it and enjoy).

"And PRINT IT!"

Tommy Harper 1962

There are some color images of Harper in his one-season stint in Cleveland (1968) but I don't know of one as nice as this Dexter.

Also posted is Harper's '67 Dexter, which emphasizes something odd about his career timeline. He wore the '66 Reds vest and white-crowned cap, then this '67 Reds red-crowned cap and pinstripe shirt, then the '68 Indians uniform, then the '69 Pilots uniform, then the '70 Brewers uniform (literally re-lettered Seattle unis), then the revised '71 Brewers uniform design, then the '72 Red Sox flannels, then in '73 the first Red Sox doubleknits, then the '74 Red Sox experimental red-and-black crowned caps, then the '75 Angels uniforms, then the three '75 A's basic sets (gold, green, and white), then the '76 Orioles and their two sets (white and orange).

If you were trying to collect a full set of Harper/uniform images, you'd have to find him in 15 different uniforms worn over only 11 seasons!

Jim Grant 1958

A couple of color shots of Mudcat from his one year in Los Angeles. This is a nice one, with his shirt untucked...

About 10 years ago, Elia was at Rays Fan Fest, signing autographs. He refused to sign the infamous page 99 of Johnstone's book for me..

Lindy McDaniel was a favorite player of mine. He pitched 21 consecutive seasons in the majors and still retired before his 40th birthday
(1955-1975; ages 19 to 39). He was #2 all-time in game appearances for pitchers when he retired. I once saw him pitch the last 13 innings of a 14 inning game for the Yankees against Detroit, giving up just one run and getting the win. (Aug. 4, 1973).

Ty Cline 1960

41st pick by the Expos in the 1968 Expansion Draft (from the Giants), we liked to call him our favorite "Ti-Clin", a well known expression here, to describe someone who "b---s---" about everything. Of course, Ty was not that kind of person, on the contrary, a very nice and humble guy. But his name sounded so much like it, that he became a fan's favorite. Ty played 101 games for "Nos Amours" in 1969, then, after getting in only 2 games, he was traded in June 1970 to the Reds for Clyde Mashore.

Don Shaw 1967

Don Shaw was the 40th pick by the Expos, in the 1968 Expansion Draft, taken from the Mets. In his only season with "Nos Amours", he had his ups and downs, from minors to MLB, and back. Finally purchased by the Cardinals in 1970, where he was a "one season wonder" in 1971, as a reliever, 7-2, 2,65 ERA.
There are 5 different pics in the Topps Vault, for Don, but this one (from the Snapshots's set) I really like.

Ok, looking for some good quality color pictures for any of the following Cubs from the late 1970's in a Cubs uniform for a project I'm working on... I've searched the threads I believe... Any love would be appreciated! Thanks all!

NL East Needs - 1977

As usual, looking for something in color unless otherwise indicated:
Mets: George Medich (Ha! Fat chance; I know...I already have the B&W image posted on this forum)
Phillies: Dan Warthen
Pirates: Tim Jones (would like something other than the image from his 1978 Topps rookie card)
Cardinals: Doug Capilla, Jerry Davanon (something that wasn't taken during his early 70's stint with St. Louis), Taylor Duncan, Tom Underwood (yeah, yeah...I know; I have the B&W action shot).

Thanks as always!

Cardinals 1977 Call-Ups

The Sporting News from September of 1977 reports a number of players recalled or acquired by the Cardinals when rosters expanded, but who did not appear in any games. Their names are mixed in with those of guys who did see some action, which leads me to believe they did join the big club for at least a brief period before the season ended. Of these, images are needed of:
Tommy Sandt
Randy Wiles

Others listed include Terry Kennedy, Terry Landrum, Manny Castillo and Steve Staniland (Staniland would be a member of the Sharman Society if he truly was on the active roster, but he doesn't appear on the Near Major Leaguers list at the SABR site; he continued to play for Arkansas through the Texas League playoffs during the first part of the month).
