Amos Otis 1967
And here's another tough-to-find member of the '69 World Champions (though he started 20 games for them, including several in September before the N.L. East championship was clinched).
Otis was still a sometimes third baseman before the Mets gave him away in one of their annual trades for a worse-than-just-playing-with-three-infielders third baseman, Joe Foy. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 02:00 AM. |

Barry Raziano 1973
From the same shoot at the '69 camp, Raziano not in the uniform of either of the teams for which he actually pitched, the '73 Royals (one of the greatest white whales of the decade) and '74 Angels.

Greg Goossen 1965
Here's a Dexter of the colorful ex-catcher, 1969 Seattle Pilot, and member of a family of boxers and boxing promoters.

Vic LaRose 1968
We saw the Dexter of him in the Angels' camp in 1966, now here's the image of him in camp with the '69 Cubs (after his four game MLB career was already over).

Danny Sheaffer 1987
Danny Sheaffer made the Red Sox out of Spring Training in 1987 when their starting catcher, Rich Gedman, started the season on the disabled list. Sheaffer had hit .340 at AAA Pawtucket in 1986 and was third on the depth chart behind Gedman and Marc Sullivan.
Sheaffer made his debut on April 9th when he started against the Brewers in Milwaukee going 2-4 hitting his 1st big league HR in the 7th off of Chris Bosio. He stayed with the Red Sox until Gedman came back in early May. He earned two more call ups with Boston in 1987 (July and September) finishing the year just 8-66 with 1 HR. He saw brief time with the Indians in 1989 before finally settling into a big league backup role in Colorado and St. Louis from 1993-1997. He has remained in the game as a coach and, most recently, managed the Rays rookie league team in Princeton |

More color is not automatically better. These '69 prints, as you see, don't respond uniformly to enhancement, especially flesh tones.

Milt Pappas 1957
Now a run of Dexters showing Reds in the post-1966 uniform style they wore only relatively briefly, beginning with Milt Pappas - who was out of it by June 11 of its second season of use.
Note the group of players at the left wearing the Reds' old uniforms that were maintained through spring training '67. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 02:01 AM. |

Deron Johnson 1960
And Johnson would wear the Red cap for only one season, preceding Pappas to Atlanta in the off-season of 1967-68.

Art Shamsky 1965
Same one-season term for Shamsky, who was dished off to the Mets after the '67 campaign.

Johnny Edwards 1961
And here's Mr. Wrong Place, Wrong Time. Johnny Edwards was on three straight National League All-Star teams (and won Gold Gloves in two of those seasons) and then five months after this photo was taken the Reds called up a minor league catcher named Bench and the next thing Edwards knew he was Tim McCarver's back-up in St. Louis.

Gene Schmidt
This Topps upload (KF 249/250) identified here as every San Francisco Giant except Buster Posey and Willie Mays, turns out to be...
Earnest Eugene "Gene" Schmidt. Earnest Schmidt Minor Leagues Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com I'd never heard of him either. He was 10-0 in 1975, the kind of minor league metric that used to get somebody noticed. Topps dates the photo to 1977 and a San Mateo newspaper account of non-roster cuts from March 19, 1977 references Schmidt, so there you are. |

Baseball Reference actually has his info under two separate headings.
Under Earnest Eugene Schmidt, we have his career (1975-79) stats, height, weight, age (no birthday). Under Gene Schmidt, we have the "rest of the story," that he was from El Camino College and was the Giants first-round pick (seventh overall!) in the January phase of the 1975 MLB draft. This Schmidt had unknown age, or bat/throw info. And no stats, as if he never played And no position. |
