Ok, silly question guys... I'm asking because I'm truly clueless about it, so I apologize if I bother anyone.
Is there somewhere that shows all of the Topps Vault images? I know Topps randomly puts them out, but is there somewhere that shows them all? I'm just not familiar with how it works and I'd like to search for a few more obscure Cubs players from the late 1970's & early 1980's. Thanks guys! |

2017 Photo Day! (trois)
I may be a bigger fan of Photo Day than the rest of you, but I do want to post other outlets than Zimbio and Getty when I find them. I'll try to keep them contained in this post, to stay out of everybody else's way. And, in that spirit, if you stumble across any, it might be best to PM me and I'll add them here, rather than start a new post (I'll give credit as due).
Posted below are an artsy Newsday image of Lucas Duda, an artsy USA Today shot of Eric Thames, and a standard shot of Brent Suter (who was not included in the Zimbio Brewers album). (2/26/17: Added an image of Andre Ethier from the Dodgers Photo Blog because I'm partial to outdoor images.) AP's Team collections (per keonleafs) -- (if any players are missing from a Zimbio album, you'll likely find them in the AP albums) Brewers (WTMJ) (50) -- images were from USA Today (Allan Henry), but not all are in the Zimbio album Mets (Newsday) (41) -- Alejandra Villa, photographer Yankees (Newsday) (66) -- J. Conrad Williams, Jr., photographer Royals (SB Nation) (9) -- Mix of USA Today (Allan Henry) and Getty (Rob Tringali) Cardinals (St. Louis Post Dispatch) (148) -- Chris Lee, photographer Reds (Cincinnati Enquirer) (42) -- Kareem Elgazzar, photographer Diamondbacks (Arozona Republic) (128) -- Rob Schumacher, photographer Dodgers (Dodgers Photo Blog) (20) -- Jon SooHoo, photographer Last edited by FatJack; 02-26-2017 at 08:18 PM. |

Jeff Yurak
I'd been looking for a color shot of Yurak for some time, so I thought others might have been as well - found in the Brewers' 1979 yearbook.

Bob Johnson - 1977
Was also looking for an image of Johnson from his time with the '77 Braves recently. Here's a B&W from the 1977 Braves Illustrated yearbook - I haven't seen it before, and I don't think it was ever posted on this forum.

Jeff Sovern - KF 715 & 716
Jeff Sovern is the White Sox player in KF 715 & 716. The Topps Vault photo below of Sovern was for sale on eBay in July, 2015. It shows the same face, uniform, and uniform number as in KF 716.
Sovern was a non-roster invitee as a catcher with the White Sox in 1975. He was on the spring roster of the Reds in 1976 and 1977. Oops -- Hadn't seen keonleafs' post when I was working on this. Last edited by Cusick; 02-24-2017 at 09:07 PM. |

Matt Bowman 2016
The photo came from one of this spring's collections per the tip from FatJack. The photographer was Chris Lee. All of Lee's shots of the St. Louis Cardinals were in the same style -- profile shots with dramatic contrasts of light and darkness. Made me wonder if he had been influenced by Caravaggio.

The ones with the embroidered "OAKLAND" are shown as being from 1968 on the Dressed to the Nines site - but I know they were used after that, too. (For one, I have a pic of Felipe Alou that's got to be from 1970 or maybe1971 spring training)
National Baseball Hall of Fame - Dressed to the Nines - Uniform Database Does anyone know the full story on this? Thanks. |

The '72 Topps cards show a lot of spring training images of A's players in old uniforms - all the "single A" cap logos are a giveaway there. So either Topps used a bunch of old pics in their set that year for the A's, or the team was wearing a weird mix of uniforms in spring training '71. I would think the latter is more likely to be correct. I would put more trust in photos taken during the regular season, which for an AL team is usually going to mean good ol' third base side of Old Yankee Stadium.
Adding further to the confusion here, Dressed to the Nines shows the yellow-billed caps as being introduced in 1970, which I'm pretty sure is incorrect. If you look at the '71 Topps cards for Sal Bando, Dick Green, Steve Hovley, Paul Lindblad and Bob Locker which were presumably taken during the 1970 regular season, their caps have the "new" apostrophe S while still having the "old" green bills... but DttN has no record of this particular cap design ever existing. I think this cap was only used in 1970 and DttN missed the green bills because it's the kind of detail that's easy to overlook without good images to work with. You'd think the A's would have worn the 1970 cap a lot in spring training '71, meaning it would show up frequently in the '72 Topps set. However, I only see Vida Blue and maybe Catfish Hunter in them... with 'OAKLAND' jerseys, no less! |

I'd like to add a few words of background about the Dressed to the Nines website. First, there is a statement on the site's FAQ page that "not every uniform worn during a given year is necessarily shown in the database." The objective is to show the primary uniform(s) worn by the club during the given season. See the following webpage:
National Baseball Hall of Fame - Dressed to the Nines - Uniform Database Second, most of the database was developed by Marc Okkonen and was originally published in book form as BASEBALL UNIFORMS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. The website indicates that Marc's content runs up through 1993, and the years since then have been updated by Major League Baseball. I must have an earlier copy of his book, because my copy only shows uniforms through the year 1991. At any rate, the point I'd like to make here is that Marc did all this uniform research in the era prior to the availability of Internet. So when we find uniform variations today which are not reflected in the database, we are able to make use of images which are available to us through Internet which were not available to him. His was a remarkable piece of work, and it has withstood the impact of time well. The website indicates that there have been some updates to his section of the database, but I would guess that there have not been many. The dust jacket of the book had a quote from Sports Illustrated which said: "No one in the world knows more about baseball uniforms than Marc Okkonen." As with any database, there will continue to be corrections as time moves ahead. |

Red Sox images needed...
Finally getting back to my Red Sox image inventory. Going in alphabetical order, so here are the As I need, if anyone can assist (I have searched this forum, so please forgive me if I've overlooked anything already posted; I noticed that the posts of one member in particular, who otherwise seemed to have pictures I might need, seem to have had the images stripped). As usual, the larger the scans the better for my purposes:
ADAMS, Bob (need with Boston) ADKINS, Doc (need with Boston) ALTROCK, Nick (need with Boston) ARELLANES, Frank (have the Ramly Tobacco card image, would prefer another) ARMBRUSTER, Charlie (have the tiny head shot, need something larger) ASHLEY, Billy (need with Boston) Thanks to all! Larry Ray, Houston Astros 1982
Larry Ray was a late 70s Astros draft pick from Switzerland County Indiana. An outfielder, Ray had good doubles power and he posted some OPS over .800 in the minors. I can't find his minor league fielding records on Baseball Reference, so it's not clear just how good or bad an outfielder he was. The Astros took a very quick look at Ray during their disastrous 1982 season--seven plate appearances, one hit, one RBI, which would turn out to be Ray's final MLB stats. He continued to hit well in the minors, but the Astros never recalled him and he quit baseball at the age of 29. Up to now the only major league image I had seen of him was a small, blurred black and white shot. Here is a color image of Ray I found on a local Switzerland County site. The quality is far from top notch, but at least it is in color.

Frank Arellanes 1908
Per above request.
The attached photo isn't great, but unlike the Ramly, at least it shows him wearing a Red Sox cap. It was from a 1910 Boston Red Sox promotion piece as auctioned off in 2008 by Robert Edwards Auctions. Arellanes also appeared in the 1911 Spalding Guide in a Red Sox uniform. My notes indicated that his photo was on Image 107 within that guide when the guide appeared on-line. However, it doesn't seem to be accessible on-line any longer. |

Robert B. Adams 1925
Per above request.
The attached photo comes from Marc Okkonen's book, 2000 CUPS OF COFFEE. The quality is not good, but I'm not sure that you'll find another photo of Bob Adams in a Red Sox uniform. Hope someone can provide a better version, because it would be great to have an upgrade. |

Jim Hicks 1964
Nothing confused me more as a kid than seeing this unsuccessful first baseman-outfielder appear on his own 1967 Topps baseball card as a member of the White Sox, then on a shared 1969 Topps rookie card as a member of the Cardinals, then again on his own card in 1970 as a member of the Angels.
Not that important, but symbolic of Hicks' odd career. He played in five major league seasons between 1964 and 1970 yet got into only 93 games. He later went to Japan for two seasons with the Hiroshima Carp. Here's a Dexter of Hicks from '67, and from the '69 "proofs." Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 01:54 AM. |
