The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired left-handed starting pitcher Hagen Smith from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for catcher Jeff Van Well and minor-league left-hander Beau Ruiz.
Hagen, 28, went 7-10 in 32 starts for the White Sox in 2031 while posting a 3.65 ERA.
A fifth-round draft pick in 2024 by Chicago, he broke into the majors in 2025 and over the past seven seasons has gone 53-60 with a 3.49 ERA while pitching in 206 games/180 starts.
The Cardinals' acquired Van Well in the off-season to serve as their backup catcher and he did the job well.
In 63 games/57 starts, the 25-year-old hit .282 with four home runs and 25 RBIs.
Hagen, 22, was drafted in the second round of the 2028 draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, only to be released on July 30, 2030.
He signed with the Cardinals in November 20230.
He split the 2031 season between Palm Beach and High-A Peoria.
In 19 games/19 starts, he was 3-7 with a 4.54 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the signing for right-handed relief pitcher Emmanuel Clase to a one-year contract worth $3.160 million.
The 33-year-old Clase spent the 2031 season with the Chicago White Sox, where he posted 33 saves while going 4-6 in 55 appearances with a 3.91 ERA.
Clase spent a single season in Texas in 2019 before moving on to Cleveland, where he spent eight seasons.
In his career, he has pitched in 748 games/one start and gone 50-55 with 408 saves and a 2.08 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed left-handed relief pitcher Jose Alvarado to a one-year contract worth $2.6 million.
Alvarado, 36, split the 2031 season between the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.
In 57 games, he was 10-4 with 15 saves and a 3.61 ERA.
Alvarado broke into the majors in 2017 with the Tampa Bay Rayes.
Like most relievers, he has bounced around the league the last few seasons.
In 763 career outings, just one start, he has posted a 54-61 record with 158 saves and a 3.57 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals have claimed right-handed starting pitcher Deven Sheerin off of the waiver wire from the New York Yankees.
A year ago, the 26-year-old made 28 starts for New York going 7-7 with a 3.98 ERA.
Sheerin broke into the majors in 2030 with the Yankees.
Over the past two seasons, he has gone 17-20 with a 4.92 ERA.
