Banner Day for Vault Releases

Not only were those KF images released, there are a bunch of new images in the MG file.

Numbers 329-357 are non-watermarked images that all have appeared on Topps cards or sub-sets. Numbers 358-397 are regular watermarked images.

John Mizerock Braves 1989

John Mizerock was (is) from Punxsutawney PA, which no doubt means that he's heard every groundhog joke in existence. Mizerock spent twelve seasons in the minors, and only got to play regularly a couple of times. He didn't walk, his power was irregular, and he didn't play great defense either. He got one year and parts of three others in the bigs, where he was pretty much the same, so why did he get up there at all? The truth is that Mizerock was lucky, because both of the organizations he was in were short of catching. Alan Ashby was hurt for a good part of the 1983 season, and Mizerock was one of the guys the Astros used to plug the gap. He spent all of ’84 back in the minors, was third behind Bailey and Ashby in 1985, and got a season of glory as a reserve on the 1986 division-winning club, spending the whole season with the big team. Mizerock then moved on to the Braves system at just the right time. With Ozzie Virgil a disappointment and Jody Davis a disaster, the Braves were scrambling for anybody who was willing to go behind the plate. Mizerock played regularly for the Richmond AAA club in ’89 and was pretty awful, but he was a warm body and so he got to Atlanta for his last major league season. He is still around as a coach, and I hope he teaches his players the power of good luck in the game. He certainly had his share. As for us, we are lucky that Topps has finally given him to us as a Brave.

Jerry Stephenson 1963; Topps Upload, Corrections

Not a lot of the 1967 Red Sox/1969 Pilot righthander in a Dodger uniform. He pitched just three games for them in September 1970 after a gaudy season in the Pacific Coast League, but Topps happened to have somebody there during L.A.'s visit to Cincinnati, where he pitched the first of them.

Correcting and filling in the other upload lists:

KF 844-845 (in addition to 842-843) are Randy Stein, not John Flinn.

KF (818) Joe Amalfitano; (820) Bob Anderson; (832-833) John Mizerock.

(MG) 358-359 Jerry Stephenson; 360-361 Rick Stelmaszek; 362-363 Ricky Steirer; 364-365 Bill Stein; 366-367 Dave Stegman; 368-369 Dave Steffen (Detroit system, RHP); 370-371 John Stefero; 372-373 Darrell Osteen; 374-375 Bill Stearns (Yankees system, C, brother of John); 376-377 Joe Staton; 378-379 Bob Stinson; 380-381 Royle Stillman; 382-383 Sammy Stewart; 384-385 Jim Stewart; 386-387 Lee Stevens; 388-389 Randy Sterling (Mets system, RHP); 390-391 Earl Stephenson; 392-393 Rennie Stennett; 394-397 John Stephenson.

MG 362-363 is Ricky Steirer, obscure pitcher with the Angels from 1982-1984. I suspect this is later in his tenure than earlier. MG 370-371 is John Stefero, mediocre catcher with the Orioles, 1983 and 1986, probably closer to '83 than '86 in my opinion. Which of course could be wrong.

Joe Staton 1972

Not a lot of this two-season Detroit first baseman, conveniently posted in home (Spring Training) and away (Milwaukee County Stadium 1972):

I am an idiot.

I see Mizerock all the time at the Phillies ST complex (I live about 10 minutes from there) and I didn't recognize him,.

I'll show him these, hoping he can sign them (he should; he's a nice guy) but I am NOT going to tell him that I didn't recognize him...

The Rest of the Vault release

These Folder MG sharp images are all on Topps products (No guesswork!); why these images were not watermarked is a puzzle. Does that mean these were acquired from an outside source?

Topps Vault

I see a lot of mentions of the photographic images that can be found at the Topps Vault. How is the Topps Vault accessed?

Watermarked images are "transparencies" (basically a positive negative). The non-watermarked images are hard copy photographs. I suppose the calculation would be that a transparency is the type of source material that can easily be mass produced in 8x10 (or other) images, whereas you can't really blow up a hard copy photo nor mass produce them without some loss of definition. There have been numerous such non-watermarked images throughout the Vault--ranging from B&W (many team issued) Topps used in early issues (either colorized, painted, or as insert photos) to the action photography "polaroids" from '71 forward. Obviously, by the time Bonilla arrived on the scene, photography had advanced considerably from the polaroid days.

A Sad Day: Who's Who In Baseball (1912 & 1916-2016) Ceases Publication

After putting out a total of 102 annual issues, the last 101 consecutively, Who's Who In Baseball, the handy statistical guide of Active Players, has ceased publication. There will be no 2017 edition forthcoming. It's late Winter appearance on newsstands was a harbinger of Spring and the coming Baseball season. It's a sad day for many. It will be missed!
Here's the final edition.

Thanks!

Another Big Vault Day in a Huge Week

Another double-barreled day:

Folder KF 866-905

Folder MG 428-467

If Topps keeps this up, we might feel like we're making a dent in the million-plus images that figure to be coming out one day.

Duke Carmel 1959

Not much of him during his brief stay with the '63-64 Mets.

Wouldn't count on this making much of a dent in the untapped piles of the Topps Vault. Most of these are from files, even shoots, that we have seen before. Indeed I suspect they are literally cleaning up the office and uploading whatever they're finding.

(KF) 866-867 Nolan Ryan; 868-871 Rick Miller; 872-873 Bob Oliver; 874-877 Randy Moffitt; 878-881 Paul Mitchell; 882-883 Cleo Smith (Dodgers system OF); 884-885 Bob Stanley; (used images) 886 Fred Scherman (1973); 887 Jim Schaffer (1963); 888 Mac Scarce (1973); 889 Bob Allen (1964); 890 Cecil Upshaw (1972); 891 Jeff Torborg (1964); 892 Jim Sundberg (1976); 893-894 Felipe Alou (1972, 1965); 895 Duke Carmel (1964); 896 Rob Belloir (1978); 897 Dick Selma (1970); 898 Art Shamsky (1969); 899 Larry Sherry (1964); 900 Sonny Siebert (1973); 901-902 Andy Messersmith (1975, 1977); 903 Bob Bailey (1976); 904 Jim Barr (1980); 905 Bill Swift (1986).

(MG) 428-429 Eddie Milner; 430-431 Steve Mingori; 432-433 Jim Minshall; 434-435 John Milner; 436-437 Darrell Miller; 438-439 Dyar Miller; 440-441 Eddie Miller; 442-443 John E.
