Many are images from the 19th century or enlargements therefrom. It's just not reasonable to expect modern digital-style quality from such material. I am amazed and grateful that we can find any images at all of some 19th century ballplayers. And as far as that goes, I specialize in the 1980s--only 30 plus years ago--and some of those images are less than perfect. We have to work with what we can find.

It's been a while since I have contributed here. I don't have anything earth-shattering, but here is a good color shot of lefty Dan Schatzeder during his very brief stay with the 1982 Giants, courtesy of the good dr. jteeee. Schatzeder, in case you have forgotten, was a journeyman southpaw who pitched for the Expos, Tigers, Giants, Expos again, Phillies, Twins, Indians, Twins again, Astros, Mets, and Royals during the course of a long underwhelming career. I was constantly getting him mixed up in my mind with Bob McClure, which is not surprising since they were both lefties in the same era, of the same level of ability, and pitched for a couple of the same teams. For several weeks in 1986 the Expos had both of them, which was redundant to say the least since their similarity scores are 940.7. Perhaps they were really the same person.

I wouldn't worry too much about responding to Cheech. He is apparently upset that I tried to help him so he felt the need to throw out bitter little criticisms on images I posted of players that previously had nothing but woodcuts for pictures.

Frank Decker, an old-time St. Louis area catcher who played 1879 Syracuse Stars and the 1882 St. Louis Brown Stockings is pictured alongside a group of old St. Louis ball players in the June 19, 1925 St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Great connection! Oates was in two non-watermarked folders, TT and UU, from same photo session.

Technically, Michael Oates was on the Expos' 40-man roster in the spring of 1969, rather than being a non-roster invitee. But this was a helpful identification. Thanks.
