Dan Long 1890
Here's Long pictured with the 1887 Oakland team. The other photo posted of him featured him in civilian clothes.

Amos Rusie 1889
This is Rusie pictured in the late 1890s. One of the better options for this Hall of Famer in my opinion.

Those Sneaky Vaultkeepers...
Surprise! The Vault adds 40 images today -- but back in Folder KG (901-940),.
Looking forward to pinning down IDs, because one of my personal White Whales, a Bill Sharman All-Star, makes his Topps debut today (unless I'm wrong). |

Thanks for the heads-up. Gotta admit I'm kind of curious to see where the bidding goes on a Gus Mauch transparency.

Two Folders Active Thursday
After a quiet week, the Vault has added 60 images in Folders KG and MJ. Two things I've been looking for since the beginning were, I thought in KG. Larry Maxie, who was a rising prospect with the Milwaukee Braves, finally reached the majors unexpectedly in 1969. But it turned out to be minor leaguer Mike McCammon, who previously had appeared in the Vault.
But my White Whale -- and a couple of super shots -- is Bill Sharman All-Star and Twins near-miss prospect Davis May. Called to the big leagues in 1977, he returned to the minors without making an appearance, never to return. FOLDER KG: 901-904 Dave May; 905-906 Jim McAndrew; 907-908 Jerry May; 909-910 Larry Maxie' 911-912 Gus Mauch (Mets trainer); 913-914 Len Matuzek; 915-918 Rick Matula; 919-920 Clyde Mashore; 921-924 Dal Maxvill; 925-926 Mike McCammon; 927-928 Joe McCabe; 929-930 Al McBean; 931-932 Dick McAuliffe; 933-934 Lee Maye; 935-936 Davis May; 937-940 Rudy May. FOLDER MJ 241-242 Dan McGinn; 243-244 Randy McGilberry; 245-246 Andy McGaffigan; 247-248 Orlando McFarlane; 249-250 Will McEnaney; 251-252 Dave McDonald; 253 Larry McDowell; 254 Terry McDermott; 255-256 Lindy McDaniel; 257-260 Tom McCraw. Going thru folder GN, I came across some black and white pics. A few had the names on them, the others didn't. I managed to ID the no-names except for one. Does anybody know the identity of GN 164? His uni is a '61 A's and I'm guessing from the stance he''s a pitcher. I've gone thru Baseball-Reference and I don't see him there. Looks like a ST pic. Is this a non-roster guy here? Thanks.

I see what you're saying. You're strong that 253 and 254 aren't the same guy? I went with yes because both are sporting some very trendy sideburns. Could not find any other photo of McDowell. Can you post evidence image?

Bob McClure - Royals - UIN 1975
Well, another run on the TV folders (MJ) reveals that I didn't have to wait the decade for one of my white whales. Bob McClure as a Royal. Merkle was able to previously help and today sends me into the weekend on a great note.

909-910 is clearly Maxie. I have to agree with keonleafs that 925-926 doesn't look like the same guy. For one thing, every picture I've ever seen of Maxie, he's blond. And I don't think folks were bleaching their hair (and eyebrows) in the early 60s. I'll grant you the ears are very similar. If you're more sure of the Atlanta Maxie, do you have a comparison photo?

Jesse Stovall 1903
Stovall was 5-1 with Cleveland in his first season in the major leagues. He was 2-13 with Detroit the following year, which became his last in the majors. He continued in the minors through 1912. Jesse was the older brother of George Stovall, who had a 12-year major league career. |

Bob McClure: Then & (Almost) Now
Here's a companion piece to the photos of Bob McClure's
playing days with the Kansas City Royals that were posted by Hobbs 11 (page 1549 - Section 30980). It pictures McClure as a pitching coach with the Philadelphia Phillies. This is from the 2016 Phillies photo pack - a set of postcard-sized cards the Phillies produce annually of their players, manager, coaches, broadcasters - and of course there's always one of "The Phillie Phanatic". |
