Today we learned that Tom Seaver had a pitch count (135), that the cable cam for Citi Field is in the talks, and that the West Sacramento park was supposed to play small, but Juan Soto has still cost $765M per Mets home run.
Pete has gone 0-for-8 since I jubilated about his NL rankings, which will teach me to ever feel joy again. Anyway, Mets win handily after five innings of chronic indigestion, taking an 8-run dump on the Pathetics' pen. It's also way past my bedtime. Buenas noches.

It's hard to know how to approach this, especially among friends.
![]() But the inescapable facts are these: 1) I am a Yankees fan, and 2) Yankees fans are going to want to follow Juan Soto, to see how he does this season for you fellows. I don't want to turn this into a Juan Soto watch thread. But periodically, I will visit with a report and my impressions. Hey, there are no sour grapes! He was good for us last year and helped us to get as far as we did. Money talks and players walk. Most of us get this. But we can't help wondering what would have happened had the Yankees won the bidding war. Will it be with consternation or relief that we review this situation come October?

Maybe he needs a shipment of those torpedo bats!
I don't know, it's still early. But sometimes "early" is suddenly rounding third base and heading for August.

On another note, from today's replay of yesterday's 8-0 victory over the Athletics, the Mets today are the only team without back-to-back losses yet. Also, Oakland and Sacramento deserve a better team than the A's.

Heyyy, $382.5M!!
![]() Woke up early and while in the bathroom made up madman math like "if I skip out all the between-inning bits and the game didn't take longer than 2:30, I can get to work on time". Refrained from going to the archives. Box score says the game took 2:45. That doesn't mean I don't need help. ![]()

On a more pleasant note (than sports betting), Metsies, Metsies, Metsies! A day game on SNY. I'll take it.

Um, may Winker get a haircut soon? It could become a factor, like in that play at the plate. He could have tripped over his hair, and it's still an out if the catcher tags his abundant locks.
Helmet came off? Good. Tag him in the hair! ![]()

Actually, his strikeout just now game me a thought. It was a swinging strikeout, so this doesn't totally apply, but he could use his hair strategically at the plate.
How? Well, it's flowing well under his batting helmet now. He could very well swivel his head violently each time as the pitcher goes into his delivery, and obscure the umpire's view with his fluff. Winker would be in total command of the strike zone!

I'd prefer it if he got a few hits and wouldn't imitate John Mayberry jr. in the cleanup spot.

“That stupid, head-first slide!” – Keith Hernandez, 2025
“Those stupid, clutchless, concrete-gloved Mets!” – your favorite talking raccoon, 2025 For seven innings, the hardest hitting the Mets did was Taylor Travison or whatever his name might be beaning Hunter Wendelstedt with a foul ball. Thankfully, Wendelstedt has a thick head and eventually walked off the field on his own two legs… Keith also went where it hurts otherwise, including dropping the phrase “Indian Summer”, which is apparently a bannable offense now. “Guardian Summer” …? Pitching consisted of an inning-plus of Huascar Brazobán, three-and-a-third of a 28-year-old debutee that will retire with one day of MLB service time, and somehow it went wrong only afterwards with Butt-Oh and assorted pranksters. Boom-Boom Diaz also walked the leadoff man Bader in the bottom 9th, because why wouldn’t you put the winning run on base like that, even though Bader – who early in the game threw out Winker, assorted prankster, at home plate – was eventually caught stealing, even if only on a crew chief review. At one point in the game everybody in the Mets lineup was batting .242 or less, except for Big Pete, who is currently tied for 299th all-time with 231 homers, tying Jimmy Rollins. The Mets also had the bases loaded with one out and Soto batting at one point, which somehow dissolved into a 4-U double play, which baffled Keith tremendously, and then in the 10th had Big Pete draw a walk to add to the free bogus Soto on base, and then crapped the bed for a double play and a pop to third in two more pitches. The Twinks then garroted Garrett with Blitzin’ Buxton in no time for a walkoff and the Mets’ first losing streak of at least two games in 2025. Other stupid **** only the Mets do: have an outfielder with a broken leg on the roster for a week, so when your scheduled starter is ill and you hand off Kranick to the minors, you can then claw him back by disabling the one-legged outfielder without waiting 15 days. Please don’t tell me they planned on that and/or knew that Canning was gonna be ill today in advance. Never mind that you already played with a short bench for five days and whatever damage that has done in the meantime…

He had to get a haircut when he donned the pinstripes. But he still did have a considerable amount of hair at times, as this picture shows: I remember him needing to jam his batting helmet on over that 'do! But yeah, ours is the organization that had a problem with Don Mattingly, of all people, over this: Well, now that we relaxed our beard policy, long hair will probably be coming to the Bronx soon. Our guys will match tresses with your guys then, I'm sure. ![]()

EDIT: Of course, the "kid" already has a Wikipedia page. Did you know that "The last Mets pitcher [before him] to strike out four batters in the first two innings of his MLB debut was Zack Wheeler in 2013"?

Well, is he still on the roster by tomorrow? I doubt it.
All MLB players (and the top prospects, sometimes) have their own Wikipedia article, except for some cup of coffee guys from before WW2 and for some obscure names in box scores that don't match any other known player on that team from before WW1. ![]()

Nope!
Also not on the roster for the opener against the Cards: any functioning microphone whatsoever, robbing us of many an end to a sentence, most of Steve Gelbs, and all of a promised interview with Daryl Strawberry. At least the Mets put a 4-spot on the clumsy Cards in the second and rode that to the end without major issues, although Boom-Boom Diaz had to insist on another leadoff walk in the ninth inning. ![]() ![]()

Well, you certainly know your Mets!
I was going to ask "Why, after that performance? He looked better than some of the other RPs on the squad" until I read about his ERA and WHIP in AAA.

The 6.97 ERA is across just 10.1 innings in '25. Last year for AAA Worcester, he had a 4.91 ERA as a swingman with 15 starts. Somehow he didn't even pitch a hundred innings and still gave up 21 bombs. Unless the Mets end up in another pinch (and hey, it's the Mets...), I don't think he'll see the majors again.

Once again the Cards-Mets game from the archives starts in the second inning, and with the question: why is Steve Gelbs doing play-by-play, and where the actual **** is Gary Cohen? Is he well? (Apparently he is, but I could not google that for fear of spoilers for three hours…)
Tight game that somehow went to Boom-Boom Brazobán, which didn’t work out as well as I would have hoped. Donovan immediately homered the game tied, but Brazobán (10/10 name) held on to the tie. After the blown save I demanded a walkoff homer by Pete from the universe because it owes me one, I claim. I got a Lindor walkoff homer before Pete could get a chance. I’ll be content with that. The universe doesn’t like it if you bitch about walkoff homers it gives you. 250th career homer for Lindor (and that thing was *gone*!), 254th all-time. Somebody snuck up on Pete (and Jimmy Rollins) and tied for 299th with 231 dingers last night. Shohei Ohtani! In general, the Mets make too many baserunning blunders, like Little Acuna trying to outrun a 78-time Platinum Glover on a grounder to third base…
