A Small, Odd Vault Lot

There were only 20 images released from the Vault on Thursday, all in Folder KH, but there were some genuine oddities among them.

Ernie Camacho played for six major league teams, but the Milwaukee Brewers were not among them. He was with the Brewers in the spring of 1983, then went to AAA Vancouver for all of 11 games (0-2, 6.85) before being released. But he was picked up by Cleveland, went 4-0, 1.35 with 4 saves for Charleston, and was called up before the season ended. He would spend the next four seasons with the Indians.

An even bigger "Huh?" is 107-108, a Kansas City Royal seemingly in a second-baseman throwing pose. It actually is pitcher Dick Calmus, whose career was officially over in 1968. But he was in the first Royals camp and was slated to be part of a veteran rotation in Class AAA Omaha. But he abruptly retired at the start of the 1969 season without ever appearing in a game. With the Dodgers, Calmus was the youngest pitcher to have started for them until Urias came along 50 years later.

119-120 is Bob Caffrey, a member of Team USA in 1984, but who never made it past AA for the Montreal Expos, who drafted him in the first round (13th overall) in 1984 out of Cal State-Fullerton.

FOLDER KH
101-102 Ernie Camacho; 103-106 Mark Calvert 107-110 Dick Calmus;111-114 Johnny Callison; 115-118 Mike Caldwell; 119-120 Bob Caffrey.

I did miss your post. But I wanted to expand on the oddity aspect anyway. Good, quick work. I usally need three passes to even get close.

Fernando Camargo was a catcher NRI in the 1979 White Sox spring camp. The uniform shown in KH 133-134 photos is of the period 1976-81. An excerpt from KH133 is shown on the left. A photo of Fernando Camargo with Monterrey of the Mexican League is shown on the right. The eyebrows match particularly well, as does the frown over the nose between the two eyebrows. The surname Camargo also fits the alphbetical sequence reasonably well, if not perfectly.

I'm going to guess that Camargo was a conditional acquisition for the ChiSox from Monterrey, since he was back with the Sultanes for the '79 season.

I don't know what constitutes good quality for what you're working on, but here are two autographed images of Jim. The larger one I think came from Sportslot on ebay.

The first one is 100 percent of what I was looking for if it weren't so washed out. Does anyone have it closer to true color? If not, thanks for putting this out there for me.

Sorry, that is the only version of it I have. Perhaps others have it better or larger. The only option otherwise would be to work on it in Photoshop.

KC Reggie

Man, Google's weird sometimes. I mean, I get it--I understand the connection--but it's just weird.

I was searching for a Cubs image of Ted Sizemore (even though I'm sure the interested party most certainly has done a Google search, but you never know). And up pops an image of Reggie Jackson with the KC A's. This is the same image Merkle posted here two years ago, But, as that image was taken from a Street & Smith's and this one is from a book, the screening is better on this one (mind you, Merkle did a heckuva job making that image look as good as he did). The book is Baseball America's Ultimate Draft Book and it was published last year. You can find it at Baseball America, Amazon, and there's a stray copy or two on eBay. I'm not linking to those site's because they don't pay me to pimp them and you can look for yourself (Amazon has the best price, btw, though it's still a bit pricey...at least to someone of my limited means). But here's the link to where I found the image, itself. I attempted to keep the credit on the side of the image, even though all it says is "Oakland Athletics".
