Tom J. O'Brien 1897

Here is a formal photograph taken of this late 19th century ballplayer that is being offered on Heritage Auctions right now. Honestly the images I have of him before this were pretty small or blurry so this is a nice upgrade.

Mike O'Berry?

Was going through some images I have and I came across this unidentified guy (I may have gotten the pic from this forum, but I haven't been able to re-locate it). Anyway, is this, as I suspect (and fervently hope) Mike O'Berry?

And, by the way, those great looking cards from 856 to 935 up, are from 2017 Topps Archives...not Heritage.
I spent a fair amount of time Friday night and I swear it's the same guy. I don't know where the original ID came from and I did not realized it was the same name until Friday. Too much, too fast from the Vault this past week.

If those are Archives, are the Heritage are these great cards in 1968 format I'm seeing, right?

O'Berry arrived well into the double-knit pullover era. This uniform is more like circa 1970-71. It also strikes me that he is being allowed to take BP without a helmet. That rule changed. You sure this isn't a young Carlton Fisk?

O'Berry

The Sox abandoned the double-knit pullovers for 1979 (the year O'Berry saw his only action with the Sox), when they reverted from their Red-themed outfits back to the navy blues. Can't say much about BP helmet policies. There aren't too many good images of O'Berry out there, but in this 82 Fleer card, I do see a resemblance. Don't think it's Pudge.

One other complicating factor is that no one officially wore number 29 for the Red Sox in 1979 (see background). Sam Bowen wore it 78 and 80 but DNP for the Red Sox that year. Could he have been a September callup and not played? Sure. O'Berry played in 21 of his 43 games in September.

Frank Heifer 1875

This photo was posted as part of Heifer's Bio on SABR. I didn't have a picture of him and he is still listed on the Missing Player list. Apparently the photo came from the Reading, Pennsylvania Fireman's Museum.

Hercules Burnett 1888

Picture from the 1887 Milwaukee Cream Citys team composite. I previously only had a woodcut image of Burnett.

Also pictured with the 1887 Milwaukee team, Smith was previously only seen via a woodcut.

O'Berry or Sax...either way those are the road unis the BoSox wore between '79-89.

O'Berry/Sax

Well, the more I look at pictures of Dave Sax, the more convinced I become that it is indeed an image of Sax and not O'Berry. Damn. The hunt continues.

So - anyone have an image of Mike O'Berry with the Sox?

John M. Shearer Pic

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody might have a pic of or a team picture including a pitcher by the name of John Shearer. He played with the Burlington Bees, a single-A team of the Kansas City/Oakland A's from 1967-70 until rotator cuff problems took him out of action. He grew up just over the mountain from me in Carlisle, PA, and he was drafted straight out of Carlisle High School in the mid-60's. After being sidelined, he became a contractor of homes and commercial dwellings in his local area (Carlisle). In fact, he built my Dad's house and where my wife and I are living right now. He told me he came up with Vida Blue, Gene Tenace, George Hendrick, etc., and it just tore his heart out when they went into 3 straight World Series, knowing that he would've been in the thick of it. He moved to Florida where the contracting business was better for him some time ago. http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...d=sheare001joh

Thanks for your help!

I don't know what Dave Sax looks like ... but looking at his bat, the signature on the barrel kinda looks like 'Dave Sax'.

KC Reggie would really look great colorized ! (Even though he's out of my collecting range of 1957 to 1966).

Mother Watson 1887

A local Zanesville researcher claims to have identified Watson in the 1888 Zanesville Kickapoos team photo. He pitched in 2 games for the Cincinnati Reds in 1887 and also played Left Field in 1 game.

It's Dave Sax, sorry. But if you are Jonesing for Mike O'Berry I have him in the Sox '79 yearbook. I will scan same and post the image tomorrow for you.
