There are two pitchers who were with the team in mid-May who aren't identified as being in the group photo. One was Tom Barry (below, center), and the other was John McPherson (below, right). I think it's McPherson:
It looks like you are quite correct. Thanks RUKen!

Another Possibility

One more possibility for the aforementioned mystery player is She Donahue. For comparison:

The acquisition of Donahue by the Phillies was noted in the July 30, 1904, edition of The Sporting Life: "From St. Louis has been purchased the much-touted young second baseman, Donahue." The group photo of the Phillies was taken in May, thus Donahue is not a possibility.

Hello awhile back, I believe it was in Baseball-Birthdays site. It might have been FatJack that had shown it. It was a 1968 Pre-Expansion roster of the Seattle Pilots. In search of this roster but can not find. If anyone knows if it is in any site or has a way to put it on this site. Would greatly appreciate. THANKS.

Hey, you know what? That Bill Henry is from THIS SITE and once again, Rainmaker, you have reposted another member's contribution without credit or even bothering to use "Search This Thread." And you know how I know this? I posted it. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ostcount=18574

Every time I am drawn back here to post more of my stuff, I find you figuring out new ways to make the experience unpleasant and embittering. Quite a gift.

Goodbye everybody.

PS Oh and you know what I forgot? Because Rainmaker had to show off and point out that the Henry/Astros shot is a Brace, and I posted it so long ago that this was before the collapse of the system by which Brace photos could be legally sold and posted - now I've had to go back and delete the photo. Great work, Buddy!

Hey Merkle923,

I'm NOT saying this out of sarcasm, but have you ever thought about starting your own website with posting your goodies??? I know through the years that you've been a big help to me not necessarily with pics but pronunciations of names, etc. I was on MVP Mods website for a bit posting my uniforms, names, etc., and there was mostly 1 guy that habitually kept ridiculing me continuously on everything I did and there were guys that were really good at uniforms, etc., that gave my posts really nice feedback but if they gave me 5 stars, he would give 1 and rag on me up and down and I never did or said anything to him, and he never put anything up himself but he totally made things hard for "newbies" and caused them not to come back so much that I quit and came back under a new login. I made friends in there and they really appreciated my work even with the limited abilities that I have.

I hope that I gave you food for thought here. I'd love to start my own site but with my really bad back pain and and tiredness, I can't start my own with that stuff.

Thanks for list'ning!

Doug Smith 1912

This is the first photo I've seen of the recently unveiled mural of Douglass Smith in Millers Falls, Massachusetts. Hopefully, a clearer view of this mural will come along soon.

Smith played just one game for the Boston Red Sox and then was sent to the Lowell minor league team. Lowell dropped him suddenly, and some think it was because of his race, whereas others do not. There are some who claim that Smith was the first partly black major leaguer of the 20th century. It's a complicated family history, and I'll leave it to those who are interested to read Smith's biography at the following website to explore it:

Pretty sure this request should have come in another thread, but not sure which. That said, this was an old old eBay listing. The Pilots had a "fan club" or "official" newsletter (as many clubs do). Theirs was called "Pilots' Log". This was the inaugural issue from August 1968. IIRC, the eBay offering ultimately sold in the $200 range. They were supposed to have a regular schedule (every other month or something like that) but, like everything else with the club, they sort of ran out of money. They moved from the glossy stock to regular newsprint and I don't recall how many issues there ended up being (at least 4).

The August '68 edition was more about selling season tickets than anything else, but it did contain what likely qualifies as the first Pilots' roster ever published. It's mostly made up of their draft picks from the '68 draft and the few veterans they had under contact prior to the Expansion Draft (which had yet to be held). FWIW, Jim Mahoney disputes that he was ever property of the Pilots.

Personally, I'm amused by the "Mystery Man" article. As this was also before the '68 World Series, the Pilots' manager had not yet been named. I'll have to go back to the books to find when, exactly, Joe Schultz (then a Cardinals coach) was chosen, but he was chosen before the World Series and it was one of the worst kept secrets in the history of baseball. Pound that Budweiser (but don't drink and drive).

Have you tried using the search features on this forum? I believe Barrios at least has been listed here in the past.

Doing this from my cell phone, so this won't be elegant. Check out a post I made on page 1519 of this thread back on 2/24/17. You'll find a nice shot of Yurak I found in the Brewers 1979 yearbook.

Brace Photos and stuff

I have generally turned the other cheek when Merkle has kicked the crap out of me over the last year or two due to mistakes I made misreading where the proverbial line has been drawn about what to show and not to show. I have served my time and have apologized to the board.
I was pretty much told not to engage in any back and forth with him, right or wrong, but this time, I cannot let it pass. Merkle's last assault is not right. I was answering a specific query about a photo and he is upset that I did not reference his ownership of a Brace photo. I did not get it from his posting, but from a custom that okcochise sent out in a download some time ago. Since it was a Topps custom, I thought it would be prudent to cut the logo off, and since that was his contribution, I did deliberately not mention him and regret having to do so now.
As to rules about the Brace photos, the days of "litigiousness" is pretty much old news. Something I wrote and posted on page 1552 (with tnfoto's advance knowledge and consent), I tracked the current status of the official Brace collection and how it is be broken up and in many cases already returned to each major league team:

LINK TO ARTICLE

Jeffrey Kelch, whose group bought the Brace collection, had no concerns about posting individual images of it. For years, many of the photos were copied and sold by the Brace family, but they cashed in handsomely and have no claim rights any longer. I'm supposed to assume that anyone has an original image of a marginal player exclusive from the 250,000 images that were still together. All of them had been digitally copied by their previous owner (Rogers, the failed Arkansas empire), which meant that anything Rogers sold was still archived in the collection that was auctioned by the Rogers executor. Kelch also made it clear that, moving forward, no individual Brave images would be sold to individual collectors by he or his group.

The sales of the Brace images is an ongoing process. At the time I wrote it, Kelch (a lifetime Cubs fan) said the Cubs were among the "six or seven" teams that had acquired the images exclusive to them. Kelch also said, His company, Digital Empire, would also be seeking out similar collections with the likewise intent of returning them to the teams "in order to allow them to protect their own history." Each team would have total and exclusive rights to produce and distribute the images as they saw fit.
Kelch also said this:
“We haven’t even talked about what we’d do if a team does not want its images. ... There’s always the Hall of Fame.”
Told why I was asking questions, Kelch appreciated that someone was interested in his efforts to see the collection preserved. No threats.

Leo Garcia Reds 1987-1988

Leo Garcia was a very obscure outfielder with the Reds during the Pete Rose betting-against-himself era. Originally the property of the White Sox, Garcia came to the Reds in the 1982 deal which sent a burnt-out Jim Kern to Chicago. His numbers in the low minors were not very impressive at all, but Garcia improved once he reached AAA and he had a string of successful seasons for Wichita, Denver, and Nashville, with four straight years of .700 or better OPS. Garcia did not have home run power, but he was a fairly good center fielder who got on base some and he had decent SB percentages. His best season came in 1987, and he got into 54 games with the Reds in 87 and 88. Rose used him mostly as a defensive sub and pinch runner though, so he accumulated only 58 ABs in his two major league seasons. I have seen Garcia in black and white before on a Reds site, but this is the first color image I have come across, courtesy of ebay seller signatures4u!

I know that former Twins manager Tom Kelly was Pilots property but I didn't know that his name was *Jay* Kelly.

The latest Vault releases on eBay tell us so.

You learn something new every day....
