Mark Dempsey 1982
Mark Dempsey was the Giants 26th round pick in the 1980 June draft out of Ohio State. Mark was previously drafted by the Astros in the 9th round in 1979 but he returned to school. Mark had an exceptional start to his career going 14-1 with a 2.61 E.R.A at Great Falls (Pioneer League) with 109 K and 27 BB in 114 IP. He followed that up with a 15-7 mark in 1981 at AA Shreveport (Texas League) striking out 136 in 165 IP. He struggled at AAA in 1982 going 10-10 with a 5.47 E.R.A but made his big league debut in September as he started against the soon to be World Champion Cardinals. The Cards knocked him around as he gave up 6 hits and 3 ER in 2.2 IP including a HR to Willie McGee. The Giants did come back and win that game though so he got a ND. He threw 2 more games in relief in 1982 and never pitched again in the big leagues. He played just two more seasons spending 1983 back in AAA with the Giants and 1984 at AA with the Cubs.

Butch Davis 1983
Growing up in Kansas City I was spoiled watching great talent like George Brett, Frank White, Al Cowens, Hal McRae, Amos Otis, Willie Wilson and others
Sure we had a few shots of lighting turn into flashes in the pan like Clint Hurdle but for the most part our prospects turned out pretty good....In 1983 Butch Davis came up and hit .344 over 33 games to close out the season. We thought we had a future star....Howard Cosell on his pre season baseball special said out loud "could we have the next Willie Mays".....Oh no! April of 1984 and a .147 .AVG and I am at a game and I hear a fan yell "Go back to Omaha"...another fan followed with "Screw Omaha, head to Memphis" I remember that moment so well and it is so vivid in my mind I can picture those faces of the men who said it....Kansas City fans were not and have never been cruel to their players (even when, perhaps, it was justified) Perhaps that is why I remember it so well.... Davis bounced around to a few times after leaving KC...He showed back up with the Pirates in 1987 and with the Orioles for 13 games in 1988 and 5 more in 1989. One game with the Dodgers in 1991 before having his longest run in MLB with the Rangers for 62 games in 1993. He finished up with 4 more games for Texas in 1994. He has been a long time coach since his playing days |

Mystery Cleveland Team
This old postcard of an early but unknown Cleveland team is a curiosity. Any ideas which year or team it is?

Some more Colt .45s
Ok, since rlumpkin went on a spree, I got access to some cool images through the University of Houston archives. These are from George Kirksey's papers, which were donated to the school. Kirksey was fundamental in bringing major league baseball to Houston, alongside Roy Hofheinz.
I believe most of these are from Spring Training at Apache Junction in 1962. Here's a shot of coach Jim Busby and Mr. Perfect, the immaculate one-game wonder John Paciorek. |

Colt .45s at Apache Junction - Aaron Pointer
Here's Dave Philley showing Aaron Pointer how to bunt. The caption notes that Philley was manager of the Modesto minor league ballclub, which would have been the Modesto Colts at the time. Image from the Kirksey papers at the University of Houston Archives.

Colts Farm Director Eddie Robinson
One more before I turn in for the night - and apologies if this is in the wrong thread, but it's from the Kirksey papers at UH, as are the last two, so I thought it'd be fine to include.
Here's famous Eddie Robinson, in a Houston Colt .45s uniform! Apparently, Robinson was the Farm Director for the ballclub, something I never knew until stumbling across these images. Cope, for what it's worth, is a bit of a mystery. He isn't on the 1963 San Antonio roster (so maybe this was '63 Spring Training, as the Bullets were a Cubs affiliate in '62), and while there was a James Cope who was active in the minors from '63-'64, he's listed with Bluefield in '63, a Baltimore affiliate. In '64, he spent time with the Statesville Colts, managed by Dave Philley. B-R doesn't list an affiliation for them, but I think it's safe to say it was probably Houston. Alright, well I should've turned in around an hour ago. I'll share some more tomorrow. |

Larry "Lug" Milton 1903
Milton appeared in just one major league game, on May 7, 1903, for the Cardinals. He had a single in two at-bats, and pitched the last four innings of the game in St. Louis (after Dusty Rhoads had allowed the Cubs to score nine runs), allowing one run on three hits and a walk. He was sent to Omaha in the Western League after that one game and pitched in the minor leagues through 1910. Baseball-Reference.com gives his nickname as "Tug", but the St. Louis Republic refers to him as "Lug" in this image from March 22, 1903. Last edited by RUKen; 10-12-2017 at 03:43 PM. |
