Allen Page
Allen Page was an officer with the New Orleans Creoles and the vice president/treasurer of the Negro Southern League during the 1945-50 period. This photo is courtesy of his son, Rodney Page, and appeared on the following website -- homeplatedontmove.wordpress.com. A photo of Allen Page was previously posted on this thread on page 55, but this photo is an improvement.

Leroy Haynes
According to Seamheads, Leroy Haynes was born in 1914 in Kentucky and attended Morehouse College. He was profiled in multiple newspapers in the 1970s and 1980s detailing his career post World War II as the operator of a soul restaurant in Paris. This article from 1984 includes his 1914 birthdate and Kentucky birthplace. I found a clip from American Story with Bob Dotson profiling Haynes, and at the 1:43 mark Dotson says Haynes played in the Negro leagues.
He was shown many times as an older man, but I found a photo of him on the Morehouse football team in the Nov. 22, 1935 issue of the St. Louis Argus. Many more photos of him can be found online, including this site. I haven't found an obituary for him, but this June 29, 1986 Baltimore Sun article says he died in May 1986. |

Bob Harvey
Curious about this dude. In my 1944 Season sim, with the color line abolished, he was signed by the Phillies, and won the NL batting title with an average of .387. This is no doubt based on his reported average of .430 for the Newark Eagles, per Seamheads. By 1948, at the age of 30, he was done. There is no SABR bio for him, and I’m curious what the backstory might be. I play with annual recalc off, so he promises to be a productive player in MLB for many years. It seems like he may have been a victim of the failure, despite the signing of Jackie Robinson, of MLB teams to sign other worthy Negro League players. (It bothers me that many people seem to think that the problem of racism was “solved” in 1947, because a handful of black players came to the major leagues in the first few years. I have made a hobby of tracing legitimate Negro League stars who toiled in the minor leagues, in the late 1940’s and into the 1950’s, never getting a decent shot, despite tremendous stats.) A sad legacy.

Rube Wiggins 1938
Here's another player I had no photo previously. Wiggins played in and around Paterson, New Jersey for many years and was pictured in the 5/24/1938 edition of the Paterson News regarding his suspension that season. He pitched in 1 game for the 1938 New York Black Yankees.

Wyatt Turner 1939
Turner lived in and around Pittsburgh all his life so it was no surprise that the 1/25/1930 edition of the New Pittsburgh Courier pictured him on the occasion of his first marriage. He was a well known athlete and played in 1 game for the 1939 Homestead Grays as a catcher.

Forrest "One Wing" Maddox
Forrest Maddox was a pitcher and outfielder for the Birmingham Black Barons in 1923. An image of him was posted earlier in this thread, but it was an art drawing instead of an actual photo. This photo shows him with the Knoxville Giants.

Pete Gregory 1940
Gregory had a very brief appearance in the professional Negro Leagues but made his name as a High School Football coach in Mineola, Texas for over 40 years. He was pictured in the 9/9/1966 edition of the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Junius Savage 1940
Another missing player, Savage played briefly for the 1940 Memphis Red Sox and also down in Mexico. He was drafted into the military and in 1943 was assigned to be a Tuskeegee Airman. His photo was printed in the 2/5/1943 edition of the St. Louis Argus.

Found another one of Savage, in his later years, from the Michigan Chronicle.

Do y'all have a running list of every NeL player ever and whether or not there is a photo in this thread? I'd love to spend more time helping, but don't want to duplicate efforts of the past 159 pages of fantastic work.

There is not a master list of missing or rare players for the Negro Leagues so far as I know. I'm going player-by-player through the Seamheads database right now and compiling a Facepack but I've only done 1886-1940. I'm aiming to have that uploaded by Friday.

I have one spreadsheet that lists every Negro League player for whom we have a photo and a second one that lists all the players for whom we are missing a photo. If you want to private message me with your email addresses, I'll be happy to share them with you by attaching them to an email. A caution about my data. It's a different approach than cinemaodyssey is taking, because I started this project probably 20 years ago before Seamheads advanced the research to where it is today. I built the base of Negro Leaguers starting with the Negro Leagues register in the SABR Negro Leagues book by Lester and Clark. I added to that from all sorts of sources, including Seamheads. I also carried out the chronology of the Negro Leagues to 1959. Seamheads stops at 1948. One other problem. I give links to photos in OOTP, using the tinyurl.com device to shorten the URL. Unfortunately, OOTP re-set its URL's twice. I went back and changed all the tinyurl designations once, but I haven't done it a second time following the second OOTP re-set. As a result, while the dates of the photo postings to OOTP are correct, the tinyurl's will bring up the wrong page in many cases. So you can hunt down the photo on OOTP using the date, but it takes a little time. |

Negro League Facepack, V2: 1886-1940
Thanks, Cusick, I think you already have my email but I'll message you anyways. Here's the link to the Negro League Facepack that I have just updated, seasons 1886-1940 in case you're curious. I am starting today on the 1941 season with the intent to go through 1948.
