Any known photos of Rick Sawyer in a Expos Uni. He was acquired end of 1977 and was in spring until released in march of 1978.

Dan O'Leary 1879

Seller r_t_b_s on ebay is selling a very nice cabinet card of O'Leary which also presents a much improved image of him from that which is featured in the Facepack.

Each time the moderator of this thread, tnfoto, makes a posting, he provides a link to his homepage following the words "Download Facepack & more." If you follow that link, you'll eventually come to the following page:

https://sites.google.com/site/tnfoto.../home/facepack

Near the bottom of the above referenced page, there is a hyperlink which will permit you to download the facepack.

1973 Topps

I know this isn't really the place for such an inquiry, so if anyone can direct me to an appropriate site or message me privately, it would be appreciated. The more I've looked into the 1973 set, the murkier Topps' distribution becomes - it seems that in some areas of the country cards were issued by series and then all together late in the season, and that in others all cards were available at once from the get-go. Also confusing is the distribution of the blue checklists - some collectors report acquiring large numbers of high-numbers from packs and never seeing any, and others recall them being available as a sheet of uncut cards from Topps. Any information that would help clarify all of this would be greatly appreciated.

Dave Hostetler Pittsburgh Pirates 1988

Some of you may dimly remember Dave Hostetler. Dave was your typical big power-hitting first baseman. He started off in the Expos organization, for which he hit 27 homers with 103 RBI at AAA Denver in 1981. (Thin air.) That got him a swift look from Montreal and then a trade to Texas as part of the deal for Al Oliver. The Rangers had lost faith in Pat Putnam by then, so Dave pushed Putnam out of the picture in 1982 and hit 22 homers as a rookie for Texas. It didn't last. The pitchers caught up to Hoss in the second half in '82 and he couldn't hold the job in '83, when Pete O'Brien pushed him aside. Hoss lingered on into '84 with Texas, but strikeouts and mediocre defense finally forced him into the minors and eventually to Japan. Dave spent two OK years there, came back after the '87 season, learned to catch, and made the Pirates out of spring training in 1988. Jim Leyland gave Dave every chance that year--Hostetler said later that Leyland was very decent to him--but he got into only six games with the Bucs (one as a catcher), did not hit well for AAA Buffalo, and got released. This image of Dave as a Pirate was cropped out of a 1988 spring training photo which shows him high-fiving Randy Milligan. I know this is not a face shot, but it is the first and so far only image I have ever seen of Hostetler as a Pirate.

1973 was issued in series in some parts of the country and all at once in others (it was released all at once where I was). Think of it like a test issue (we never saw Topps minis in '75, where I was, nor any of the other test products as I recall). Saying "all together late in the season" is a bit of a red herring as later series always (anywhere I ever was) included cards from the earlier series mixed in. The checklists are another matter. I know they were issued as a mail-in (and I believe that was an uncut sheet). I do not recall seeing any in packs. My guess would be that they were only in packs where the cards were issued in series. As the later series approached, they probably discovered that they had tons of them because few had mailed in for them. Just a guess on that point (makes sense). For future reference, I believe card inquiries and exhibitions should be in the "General Baseball Image Discussion" thread, which was set up as a catch-all for topics not directly related to historic images and the OOTP game (necrology, etc.).

For whatever the reason, if anyone here enjoys sports cards, I just completed an update for my cards which are available here: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/z3ib256zkyizb/Cards

Included are baseball, football and basketball. Hockey cards are also available but they have not been updated yet. The default format is for APC but there are also updated seasonal files for DMB and Strat. These cards will also work with other games or if you just like to look at them, tens of thousands of cards that I created are here. Thank you again for all who have contributed images here or links to images which are included in this update.

More Newfound Braces

It never ceases to amaze me that things could be lost/missing/hidden for 20-30-50 years and all of a sudden find the light of day. Or maybe it's just lucking out in guessing where to look. These three players had never been seen by me in color until I saw these Brace images in 2018. Better late than never.

Rich Barry was an outfielder in 20 games for the 1969 Phillies, so logic tells you that color images should be readily found. So much for logic.

Joe Campbell was a Rule V pickup by the Cubs from the Mets, but his only MLB action was as a Cub, going 0-3 with 3 strikeouts in his one start before being returned to the Mets.

Rick James was also a 1967 Cub, the team's first-round pick in the first draft in 1965. He made three appearances for them (4.2 innings) the final month of the season at age 19, starting the team's season finale (eiht runs, seven earned, in three innings) and never returned to the majors. He was drafted by Padres in the '68 expansion draft, but returned to Cubs for his final pro season, 1970, at age 22.

We never came to a consensus opinion over the ID of this 1908 Cleveland player, but UKBaseballfan and I thought it was Lister. I think it is a strong possibility, thanks to the side profile shot previously posted.

Great, thanks a million. What's funny is that I usually check that site fairly often, don't know how I missed Hostetler.

Spike Shannon 1904

Playing in the minors for quite some time, Shannon finally got the call to the big leagues in 1904 for the Cardinals and became a quality player. He is pictured here on the 1903 St. Paul Saints.

Phil Geier 1896

Geier had a long minor league career that sometimes got interrupted by stints in the big leagues. He played his last season for the 1904 Boston Braves and was afterwards relegated to the minors through 1911. He is pictured here on the 1903 St. Paul Saints.
