On paper, there wasn't much difference between the two strong ballclubs, but on the field, the verdict went to the Superbas. It was the 4th for the new league champions. They defeated the Highlanders 4-3 in the series, winning the last game today by a 5-3 score. 1906 Off Season Senators News Market Research has determined that the Washington market has increased to below average. Great defense makes a difference in baseball. This year's top glovemen in the National League are: Pitcher: Nick Altrock (Philadelphia Phillies) Catcher: Harry Bemis (Cincinnati Reds) First Baseman: Dan McGann (Pittsburgh Pirates) Second Baseman: Johnny Evers (St. Louis Cardinals) Third Baseman: Bill Bradley (Pittsburgh Pirates) Shortstop: Kid Elberfeld (Boston Doves) Left Fielder: Fred Clarke (New York Giants) Center Fielder: Roy Thomas (Brooklyn Superbas) Right Fielder: Chick Stahl (Chicago Cubs) 1906 Glove Wizard Award Trophies Given out by AL Monday, October 29th, 1906: Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 1906 American League Glove Wizard Awards tonight: Pitcher: Vic Willis (Cleveland Naps) Catcher: Fred Jacklitsch (Philadelphia Athletics) First Baseman: Frank Chance (New York Highlanders) Second Baseman: Miller Huggins (Philadelphia Athletics) Third Baseman: Charlie Hickman (Philadelphia Athletics) Shortstop: George Davis (New York Highlanders) Left Fielder: Matty McIntyre (Washington Senators) Center Fielder: Jimmy Slagle (Detroit Tigers) Right Fielder: Harry Lumley (St. Louis Browns) New York's Karger Reaps NL's Rookie Award Tuesday, October 30th, 1906: Ed Karger's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the New York Giants and today he walked away with the 1906 National League Newcomer of the Year Award. The 23-year-old starter registered a 19-11 record this season in 39 starts. Over 288.1 innings he gave up 290 hits, struck out 77 and issued 60 walks as he held the opposition to a .248 batting average and fashioned a 2.28 ERA. AL's Top Rookie Crowned Tuesday, October 30th, 1906: This year's outstanding newcomer has been selected and the honor goes to the New York rookie Johnny Bates -- the recipient of the 1906 American League Newcomer of the Year Award. The talented Highlanders center fielder took the trophy by hitting .348 in 134 games this season and finished with 191 hits, 8 home runs, 147 RBIs and 112 runs scored. Brooklyn Ace Cops NL Outstanding Pitcher Award Thursday, November 1st, 1906: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1906 has been presented and the National League winner is Rube Waddell of Brooklyn. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Waddell. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Superbas star told reporters. Waddell excelled with an impressive 26-11 record in 40 starts. In 327.2 innings he yielded 320 hits and 70 walks, while striking out 227 and compiling a fine 2.77 ERA. Premier Reliever Scores Best Hurler Honors Thursday, November 1st, 1906: Jim St.Vrain had a sensational 1906 season in the American League and today the Washington reliever was proclaimed this year's Outstanding Pitcher Award recipient. St.Vrain recorded no saves in no relief appearances, struck out 237 in 364.2 innings and posted a record of 25 wins and 19 losses to go with his 2.79 ERA. 1906 Premier Batter Selected By NL Friday, November 2nd, 1906: It's been a year of triumph for veteran Honus Wagner of the Brooklyn Superbas as he hit his way to the 1906 National League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 32-year-old veteran compiled a .327 average and .402 on-base percentage by putting together 206 hits, 43 doubles, 21 triples, 5 home runs and 81 walks. He also scored 136 times and drove in 119 runs. Ty Cobb Gets Best Bat Trophy Friday, November 2nd, 1906: Ty Cobb was hitting on all cylinders in 1906, making Boston a very happy organization. He put up some solid numbers this year and was awarded the American League's Outstanding Hitter Award today. The right fielder piled up 231 hits, 43 doubles, 10 triples, 11 home runs and 134 runs batted in on the way to crafting a .360 batting average. Draft NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Thursday, November 1st, 1906: For the newcomer to professional baseball, today's amateur draft is a rite of passage. Every young player in the country is filtered through the draft pool, assessed, reassessed, scrutinized and run through several mock drafts even before they get to the real thing. But on draft day, once you've been picked, you have a shot to do what so few men in history have done, become a North American BaseBall League ballplayer. St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Chicago will have the first five picks. The top ten players, as rated by BNN, are: 1. George Bell, 31 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Oscar Graham, 28 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Rube Manning, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Walter Johnson, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 5. Bill Bailey, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 6. George McQuillan, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Roy Hitt, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 8. Tris Speaker, 18 year-old center fielder out of high-school. 9. Larry Doyle, 20 year-old second baseman out of college. 10. Eddie Collins, 19 year-old shortstop out of college. The Top 5 Walter Johnson by St Louis Browns. Tris Speaker by Chicago Cubs. George McQuillan by Detroit. Nap Rucker by Pittsburgh. Heinie Berger by Chicago Cubs.

1906 Name Change
Boston Beaneaters to Boston Doves. 1906 Hall of Fame Induction Pioneer Hall of Fame Ross Barnes ![]() Hall of Fame Inducts Barnes Tuesday, November 20th, 1906: Ross Barnes, a standout second baseman throughout his North American BaseBall League career, has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. During the induction ceremony, he credited the coaches, who taught him to play the game and the teammates, who taught him to be a professional. However, the most important influence, Barnes said, was his father. "Pops never gave up on me," he said, "no matter how often I felt like giving up on myself. In his 760-game career, Barnes hit .295 with 841 hits, 4 home runs, 539 runs scored and 399 RBIs. Overall Hall of Fame Cap Anson ![]() Cap Anson Makes NABL Hall Of Fame Tuesday, November 20th, 1906: Today the North American BaseBall League Baseball Hall of Fame opened its hallowed doors to its newest member, first baseman Cap Anson. One of the most feared hitters ever to grace the batter's box, Anson terrorized pitchers for quite a few seasons, collecting 2413 hits over the course of his career, including 43 home runs, while compiling a .283 batting average. But while Anson gave opposing pitchers nightmares, he was not without nightmares of his own. His hard-partying youth led to addiction and other personal problems. "I did not like myself, and I tried to use alcohol as a means to run away from my problems," Anson said. "It amazes me now that I was still able to play ball at a high level during that time." Anson blinked back tears as he continued his speech. "I was lucky to have a such a loving family, both blood-related and baseball. They supported me through my low points and gave me the strength to put my life back together. And look what it got me: a beautiful wife and kids, and now an induction into the Hall of Fame." ![]()

Major News Chesbro Twirls No-Hitter Against Pittsburgh Saturday, June 22nd, 1907: The crowd sensed something special today at Exposition Park. They seemed to get a little louder with passing of each out and each inning. It was obvious on the scoreboard that the pitcher had a no-hitter. "It was like the playoffs or the North American Series," Jack Chesbro told the press after the game." It ended up a very special day for Chesbro of the Cincinnati Reds -- he held the Pittsburgh Pirates hitless and beat them 5-0, totaling 3 strikeouts with no walks and faced only 29 batters. "Today was my day and I got lucky. I've had a couple of other shots that I've lost in the seventh inning and today I got through that and made it." Lucky? Maybe so. But it usually takes more than luck to hold a team hitless. To date this year in 16 starts, Chesbro has crafted a 9-7 mark with a 3.33 ERA.

News Lumley Goes Cycling Friday, August 16th, 1907: You might say Harry Lumley wore out his welcome with the Boston Americans. The right fielder gave them fits in today's 14-4 St. Louis victory by hitting for the cycle. "To hit for the cycle" is one of the rarest of feats in a baseball game. This occurs when a player hits a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game, getting every type of hit possible. Lumley ended the day with 4 hits in 5 at-bats, 3 RBI and 4 runs scored. Talking to reporters in the postgame interview, he said, "After the first three hits, I thought to myself, This could be the game I hit for the cycle. And I got lucky and did it." Harry Lumley singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI triple in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 5th, flied out in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off Oscar Jones in the 8th. This year Lumley is batting .317 with 9 home runs. Shut outs 8/2 Bugs Raymond (Highlanders) 5-0 over White Sox. 8/3 Jim St Vrain (Washington) 50- over Detroit. 8/3 Ed Walsh (Cincinnati) 11-0 over Beaneaters. 8/4 Ed Karger (Giants) 4-0 over Cubs. 8/6 Mordecai Brown (Brooklyn) 8-0 over Pittsburgh. 8/6 Harry Howell (Beaneaters) 6-0 over Cincinnati. 8/10 Rube Waddell (Brooklyn) 9-0 over Cincinnati. 8/14 Watty Lee (Cubs) 10-0 over Phillies. 8/17 George Winter (Brooklyn) 3-0 over Cincinnati. 8/18 Chief Bender (Browns) 4-0 over Americans.

Stone Hits .384 to Earn NL Crown Monday, October 7th, 1907: George Stone went to the plate 560 times, collected 215 hits and came away with the 1907 National League batting title. His .384 average placed him at the top of the list. The Brooklyn Superbas left fielder played in 139 games and had 2 home runs, 102 RBIs and 115 runs scored. Americans Cobb Newest .400 Hitter Monday, October 7th, 1907: It might look like a typo in this season's stats reports. But the .401 next to the name of Ty Cobb is no mistake. That's his batting average for the recently completed season. Cobb is the newest member of baseball's .400 club. The Boston right fielder tried to downplay the achievement. "It's just a number," he said. Then he admitted with a grin: "Okay, it's a big number!" That number puts Cobb in the record books with some of the game's great players. His other stats during this remarkable season include 274 hits, 49 doubles, 28 triples, 12 home runs, 148 runs and 128 RBIs. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Wednesday, October 2nd, 1907: North American BaseBall League divulged the 1907 list of eligible draftees today. It got little play in BNN coverage and why should it? Most players drafted in thirty days won't be on a big league club for years, if at all. Some will languish listlessly at the minor league level. Others will suffer a series of misfortunes, never quite making their mark, but always wowing scouts with their potential. And yet, some lucky team will draw a needle out of a haystack, send him off to the minors and forget about him for a while, only to realize they've got a Hall of Famer on their hands. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Gavvy Cravath, 26 year-old left fielder out of college. 2. Ed Summers, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Harry Krause, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 4. Joe Wood, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 5. Jack Warhop, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Bill Burns, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Slim Sallee, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. Burt Keeley, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Rube Marquard, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Frank Arellanes, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. Shut outs 9/27 Addie Joss (Browns) 8-0 over Highlanders. 9/28 Eddie Cicotte (browns) 4-0 over Highlanders. 9/30 Jim St Vrain (Washington) 14-0 over Cleveland. 10/4 Oscar Graham (Athletics) 3-0 over Washington. 10/5 Noodles Hahn (Washington) 19-0 over Athletics.

1907 Championship Series
NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 7th, 1907: A playoff baseball game has a surreal atmosphere. Fans become one, roaring in unison at a great play and sharing the grief at blown opportunity. Victory and defeat play out in a rainbow of colors, sounds, smells and feelings. North American BaseBall League playoff baseball is a memorable experience. What is it like? Ask the 10-year-old sitting with his dad as he plucks a foul ball out of the air. Ask the veteran slugger who hits that walk-off home run. Ask the manager in the big game after coming from 10 games back to win the pennant. Ask the countless number of legends who have flourished or those greats who never won the big one. Or tomorrow, ask any of the rookies what it's like to play in one of the North American Series showdowns: Brooklyn Superbas versus Washington Senators. Wednesday 10/16 George Winter (1-0, 3.60) vs Christy Mathewson (2-1, 3.32) Washington 6 Brooklyn 4: Chief Sockalexis and Cy Seymour hit 2 run HRs. Senators Triumph in 1907 North American Series Wednesday, October 16th, 1907: The Senators earned their 3rd North American Series title and now get to spend all winter basking in glory, while the beaten Superbas will have plenty of time to wonder what went wrong. Washington is the North American BaseBall League Champions for 1907. They did it with a 6-4 triumph to capture the series 4-3. MVP is Christy Mathewson (3-1, 3.52, 14 Ks) "Both clubs are talented. We just made fewer mistakes than they did," the winning manager said to the press corps at the postgame press conference. "We made the crucial plays and got the timely hits." The Brooklyn skipper agreed with that assessment and added, "We were a little weak on fundamentals at crucial times. I have a sneaky suspicion we will be working on fundamentals a lot next spring." It was a season to remember for the 26-year-old Cubs newcomer. In addition to hitting .316, Shaw played in 114 games and collected 3 home runs, 82 RBIs and 97 runs scored. St. Louis Starting Pitcher Cream of the AL Rookie Crop Tuesday, October 29th, 1907: Walter Johnson's age didn't show very often in his first year. Over 328.1 innings he gave up 338 hits, struck out 189 and issued 100 walks as he held the opposition to a .254 batting average and fashioned a 2.14 ERA. St.Vrain hurled 414.1 innings and totaled 246 strikeouts. Wagner Chosen 1907 NL Outstanding Hitter Award Friday, November 1st, 1907: Honus Wagner has been around North American BaseBall League enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. The Brooklyn shortstop put up a batting average of .337 with 46 doubles, 18 triples, 12 home runs and 128 RBIs. Ty Cobb Takes Best Bat Trophy Friday, November 1st, 1907: There's something special about a guy who can stride up to the plate and put the ball anywhere -- in the stands, off the wall, into the gap, down the third base line. You name the place and Ty Cobb probably put it there on his way to winning the American League Outstanding Hitter Award for 1907. The Boston right fielder belted out 274 hits in compiling a .401 batting average and racked up 49 doubles, 28 triples, 12 home runs, 128 RBIs and 148 runs scored.
