Funny, because I completed this mission the other way - I was set to overpay on Goodman when a Derringer came up with a BIN that was below the 7-day average so I jumped on that. The diamond card in that pack was a 97 Aroldis that allowed me to complete another Reds mission.

Ultimately the joke was on me, though, as Derringer has played like complete dog poo for my team.

Derringer has been solid for me, using Schourek as an opener and Derringer as a follower he has an era+ of 129, 7-5 with a 3.32 era in gold

I got extremely lucky on my Reds team when I did the Pinson collection, I packed Brouthers from the Diamond pack, the 120k I got from him enabled me to finish all of the Reds collections and add a bit on top (Jose Rijo, Mario Soto, Frank Robinson, Peak Pete Rose)

You could say that, but you'd be wrong. I'm not sure how someone could read my post and come away from it thinking I was advocating Stivetts in the Browns mission, but hey, I've been surprised by you before.

Everything you said is true, and yet when filtering by team on our inactive rosters, Stivetts sorts with the Browns - not a unique Browns category, but the exact same Browns that moved from Milwaukee in 1902 - and not the Cardinals.
Because it's probably the same underlying mechanism as the search box in the Auction House - a plain, no-frills text search. Text searches would not distinguish between franchises.

The point you seem to be missing is that I am not advocating for Stivetts to be part of the Browns mission. What I am surprised by is how the game didn't include him in it. This surprises me because the game does an uncharacteristically terrible job at distinguishing between franchises, which has directly led to many other instances of collection missions being wrong.

I normally operate from the assumption that past performance will be indicative of future results, but in this one isolated instance, I have been surprised that previously established precedents were not followed. Maybe I should give props to this game for getting this right, but they get so much right so often that I instead opted to use this to spotlight significant flaws that many fail to recognize.

Well thanks for the clarification. Because it did appear (not just to myself, but at least one other reader from what I could tell) the opposite.

I finished the Twins/Senators collection set recently. It really surprised me how cheaply I ended up getting the 100 Santana for. I started collecting with a PP bank around 15k...and when all was said & done, I still had about 10k PP and the Santana card. The reward cards for the individual missions, plus the diamond pack (I got live Kershaw) go a long way towards recouping the cost, if you don't want to play the Goslin card (it's the only playable one IMO).

I did already have the 93 Braxton & 89 Cronin cards, so that helped, but still even with those costs I think this collection can still be a strong value play for those patient enough.

Also, I should mention, the discord channel was super helpful...I picked up several cards well under market value thanks to that community.

Is the discord channel better than these forums for looking for cards? I've posted a few times here looking for cards in mint condition, wonder if it would be easier to find what I'm looking for on the discord.

I haven't really used the forums to look for cards, so I can't say if it's better. I just naturally gravitated to Discord for that type of thing as it's just a better real-time communication platform. So I go there when I want something quick.

There is definitely a pretty lively community of collector-types who hang out there and are willing to help pretty much anyone who asks (as far as I can tell). I had a couple people try to gouge me, but they were in the minority. I'm not sure specifically about "mint" cards but it probably wouldn't hurt to ask.

If nothing else, it's another place to ask which would increase your chances of finding one.

As far as my collections, last 5 days I've done quite a few on my main team. Completed the live Phillies for the SE Lenny at around 11-12k total cost, so saving me a decent amount over just buying SE Lenny.

Completed the Live Athletics because I pulled a Liam Hendriks, and got a cheap Chapman. Total outlay is around 10k for that too, because I packed Hendriks. So Eddie Plank comes in below his AH price too. If chapman goes back up though, it definitely wouldn't be worth it now that Liam Hendriks is now a diamond.

Also completed the Braves Turner collection for the SE Garber. I already owned the Garber from a pack pull, so I spent approximately 9500 more to complete the collection. With garbers price of 5k or so, that brings it to 14k, for the SE Garber which is around 19-21k, so another value addition.

The cost benefit analysis spreadsheet I created for collections has been pretty helpful for finding collections that are "profitable" or at the very least, provide cheaper upgrades than just buying the SE off the market.

One thing I would say though is, thanks to the Discord Collections group! Very helpful group of people. Easy way to find cards at/near last 7, and occasionally some good deals are had between the community.

Looking forward to seeing how Lenny, Eddie and Gene do on my main team in Diamond this season.

Oh, you're gonna love Lenny. That card is great. He produces at a Mike Trout level (7 WAR/162) for me.

Completed the Royals Live mission. It sure helps when a team has no card that can be considered even remotely rare.

Still can't find a way to complete a mission for a diamond pack that won't require me shelling out more dough.

It's taken me a few months but I'm only two away from completing the CWS Historical Collection. Just need Nellie Fox (84) and Jim Landis. I'd be one away but I accidently sold my Nellie Fox for under market value by mistake.

Given I'll get another diamond pack, and Ed Walsh is worth ~400,000 points, I'd say it was a good idea to go after this challenge. Definitely haven't spent anywhere near 400,000 points getting it, and if I wanted to I could sell Appling 99 for 90,000+.

Ed Walsh is worth 400k? Holy cow, now you've got me interested in doing those missions!

But here's a question for you collection aficionados: I have found there are certain collections where you end up making PP by completing the collection (the Phillies Live collection that rewards Dykstra is one example for sure, but there are undoubtedly others). I have a F2P team that's low on PP and so I'm looking to bootstrap their PP balance, if you will, by completing collections. What are some good starter collections that team should pursue? Ideally the starter ones would be less expensive collections since they don't have a ton of PP right now, so I'd have to start small and hopefully work my way up to any bigger ones.

Anyone have a suggestion a couple of good, inexpensive collections where you can start making PP by selling the reward card?

Well his auction value has been around 400k for awhile. I’m not sure he actually should go for that,

the mission can be done for half the current sale price. and maybe even much less if you are patient and disciplined about overpaying for needed cards. the diamonds needed are coming back down to earth on pricing.

so yes if you can sell walsh (and appling) for current market value you can probably make a tidy profit. otoh if ppl figure out that it can be arbitraged than the auction value of walsh should come down.

Yeah, I'm currently at 164,024 spent with only Fox and Landis remaining. I overpaid for Shoeless (60,000 when he's got a card on the market for less than 50k now) and a couple of the golds I paid maybe a 1-1.5k over. I also paid 4,201 for 74 Fox. But I got 90 Appling for well under market value (8,888).

Assuming I pay current market price for Fox and Landis, I'll be in 180,024. If I sell 99 Appling for 90k and Walsh for 400k, that's 261k profit.

Will have to see if it's worth selling them. I will never afford a pitcher like Walsh, and it's not exactly fast to sell him for 400k (I imagine it'll take 1-3 weeks).

Hmmm, so tempting to start gunning towards that mission set now...

Sitting at 7/8 in "The Fastest!" is vexing me. Unfortunately, no luck finding a Henderson card that's not more than an actual diamond pack, or any sort of Cool Papa Bell ...

Finally broke down and forked over 6K for Chien-Ming Wang. So I've got Hong-Chih Kuo now. I am so weak.

Other recent completions: 1983 Orioles (John Lowenstein), Marlins (Miguel Cabrera), Colorado Rockies: Rocky Mountain Baseball (Matt Holliday), Batters from Canada (Jason Bay), Heads up Baserunning (2 packs), Harvey's Wallbanger's (Moose Haas + Gorman Thomas), Chicago White Sox: We Are The Champions Again (Mark Buehrle), Pittsburgh Pirates: The Bonds Era (Andy Van Slyke + Doug Drabek), The Fastest! (Vince Coleman + diamond pack)

Waiting for a couple of cards to sell before finishing off a couple of the more useful collections than the above.
