August 2296 - News and Notes - August 2-3

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

2 August 2296 – Radstags Cut Thinker

The Concord Radstags have made a couple of moves after left fielder Thinker Brown got into a clash with teammates and management.

Brown verbally assaulted several teammates on the practice field, stating that the Radstags would be playing better if he were in the starting lineup. Brown went especially hard at backup center fielder Cram Garge, who manages outfield rotations.

Concord has been eliminated from the playoffs and will not see the postseason in 2296. It is currently 23-31 with six games to play.

Concord owner Sturges Freeman released a statement: “We had an unfortunate incident with a player expressing his frustration in the wrong way. We’re a team. We do this together. We win together, we lose together. That level of blame is unacceptable, and we have removed the young man from the team.”

In Brown’s place, the Radstags signed free agent outfielder Rich Vendor. Vendor has not played this season. He was drafted in the 25th round by the Finch Farm Four Leafs, but he was cut before the season began. He had not signed with a team since then.

Brown played in 34 games for the Radstags, starting seven. He was 12 for 41 at the plate for a .293 average. He had one home run, seven runs scored, six runs batted in, eight walks, and 10 strikeouts in 51 plate appearances.

3 August 2296 - Jamaica Plain Reveals 2297 Plans

Kasumi Nakano, owner of Red Rocket and now the Jamaica Plain Treasures, revealed the plans for the current Jamaica Plain Treasures for the 2297 season.

In a general assembly at the Jamaica Plain Town Hall, Nakano revealed the team's uniforms for the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets and its 2297 minor league affiliate the Haymarket Mall Commandos. Although the CBO's minor league system has not been fully fleshed out, there are some places that are known and what their parent teams will be.

For the Minutemen League, their minor league system will be in and around Downtown Boston, including Haymarket Mall.

Nakano also presented the Red Rockets Stadium banner. Nakano noted that she was adding an 's' to the name of the stadium in Jamaica Plain as opposed to the company name, Red Rocket, so that the team was highlighted over the company. All accompanying pictures are below.

2296 Players of the Week - Week 18

BL - Red-Hot Rampage Reaps BL Reward: 26-year-old Frank Clawdodger made a few East Boston Prep headlines during this past week as the second baseman proved he could compete at the plate with the best. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and Brotherhood League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 10 hits in 13 at-bats to put up a .769 average. Clawdodger collected no home runs, 2 RBIs and scored 3 runs.

Thus far this year Clawdodger is hitting .275 with 3 home runs, 26 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

IL - Morals Wins IL Honor: 20-year-old Micah Morals sent shock waves through Institute League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Institute League Player of the Week Award.

Morals made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .455 average, 5 hits in 11 at-bats, 3 home runs and 8 runs batted in.

Where the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud third baseman goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Morals certainly made his mark last week.

This year Morals is batting .314 with 64 hits, 7 home runs, 38 RBIs, 14 walks, .355 OBP and has scored 30 runs.

ML - Minutemen League Names Top Player: John Rose burst onto the Minutemen League stage in a big way last week. This promising center fielder for Goodneighbor garnered everyone's respect by putting up some remarkable numbers and picking up the Player of the Week trophy.

The 27-year-old haunted opposing pitchers hitting .750 (9-for-12) with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs last week.

So far this season Rose is hitting .325 with 14 home runs, 62 RBIs and 43 runs scored. He has 69 hits in 212 at-bats and a .415 OBP.

RL - Gerdenheimer Week's Best in RL: Crops Gerdenheimer is respected by most Egret Scrappers fans for his no-frills style of play. The 16-year-old right fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Railroad League Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .429 average (6-for-14) with 3 home runs, 10 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

Presently Gerdenheimer is batting .350 and has collected 15 home runs, 57 RBIs, .441 OBP and scored 57 runs.

Settlements Today

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

4 August 2296 - Jamaica Plain

Each Tuesday for the upcoming weeks through the playoffs, we will feature one of the settlements, teams, and owners of the Commonwealth Baseball Organization. This is meant to tell you more about life in the Commonwealth, as well as give you more information about the teams and their owners. Note: Soon we may delay the other franchises to the 2297 season unless time permits. Sorry for any settlements that have yet to be covered in 2296 if we cannot complete these stories this season.

In our sixteenth installment of "Settlements Today," I visited the settlement with the greatest promises in all the lands: Jamaica Plain. With Kasumi Nakano taking over, we are going to look forward instead of back on what is happening with our ownership and sponsorships. Therefore, we are not featuring Lucas Miller, the current owner of the Jamaica Plain Treasures.

Before the Great War, Jamaica Plain was a small Boston suburb struggling to survive. According to reports, "In 2077, with the city finances at a deficit, Jamaica Plain sought a way to close the huge gap in their budget without cutting the massive pay and benefits to their work staff. They decided to create an attraction to boost the local economy, called the Treasures of Jamaica Plain, a time capsule to be opened two hundred years later. However, they also had another fiscal problem, as they had to appropriate funds to maintain the town hall. Instead of looking for more cuts to make, Mayor Alyssa Park decided to kill two birds with one stone and send the funds to repair the basement, although not the roof or plumbing. In time, the exhibit became her pet project.

The "Treasures of Jamaica Plain." When Nate found the treasures in Jamaica Plain, the vault in the Town Hall basement turned out to be a time capsule, in which the town paid $38.79 million to build. Now, it serves as Lucas Miller's office.

"The project consumed a massive amount of funding, pushing the budget into the red. They began construction by removing the storage room and laying marble floors, and later added an automated security system, a Type-V Laser Defense Grid, to guard the treasure. Once completed, the treasure rooms took up most of the basement. Apart from the Revolutionary era antiques, it contained battlefield mementos (as a memorial to Private McKinney), a journalist's life work (also a memorial, for M. Stahlman, a reporter of the Canadian Annexation) and donated baubles from local residents, businesses and facilities. In the end, the exhibit was a disaster and very few visited. On October 23, 2077, with the Great War occurring outside, the janitor made one final entry and locked down the exhibit."

Jamaica Plain, 2287. Another area overrun by ghouls.

When Nate Howard arrived in the town, it was overrun by ghouls. He found the bodies of a group of treasure hunters and eventually opened the vault of the "Treasures of Jamaica Plain." After, he made the area a Minutemen outpost as a gateway between Boston and the Southeast Quadrant.

Today, Jamaica Plain is still being refurbished, with the east part of town, town hall, and a few shopping areas getting most of the work. Town mayor and former Treasures (baseball) owner Lucas Miller has spent a lot of time and money to make Jamaica Plain one of the nicer areas of the Commonwealth, hoping to compete with Fairline Hill Estates for being an upscale area.

Owner - Kasumi Nakano

About Nakano: "She is curious and empathetic, as shown by her pursuit of DiMA's radio signal and her desire to help the people of Acadia. When she was living with her parents, she was frequently bored, as she was isolated from the wasteland in her remote home. Her grandfather's passing worsened this feeling of boredom."

After she returned to her family from Acadia, Nakano used her talents to refurbish Red Rocket stations as a build and repair shop for electronic products. She is considered to be a key partner in the BosCom Project.

Gasoline, Diesel, Fusion: You're Good to Go

A Red Rocket billboard preserved from pre-War advertisements

Before the war, Red Rocket was everywhere in the USA: "The company started its rise in an age when gasoline and diesel were still common fuels. The fossil fuel market crash and the beginning of the Resource Wars in 2052 and the invention of practical fusion energy cells in 2066, Red Rocket expanded rapidly nationwide, offering fusion and coolant refilling services, as an early adopter, though gasoline and diesel continued to be sold throughout the franchise. On the east coast, Red Rocket holds a veritable monopoly on the market for this very reason. Many of its old gas stations were retrofitted with apparatus for maintaining and refilling nuclear engines, sometimes without even removing old warning signs.

"Red Rocket was very conscious about their public image, particularly concern for the environment, as well as family friendliness. While customers were treated with care, if any posed any threat to the family friendly image of the company, they were to be eliminated. Employees were expected to make every effort to reduce waste. One element of these efforts was the annual Trashbusters Award given to stores who demonstrated the greatest year-to-year waste reduction. The inspections were skin-deep, however, and unscrupulous franchise operators could win it simply by dumping their waste out of sight."

Now, Red Rocket is working to do more than just repair electronics and build new radios and televisions. They are even trying to recharge fusion cores so that power armor and later powered vehicles will be usable throughout the Commonwealth. It could revolutionize travel in the Commonwealth where refurbishing train tracks and engines has failed.

August 2296 - News and Notes - August 6-8

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

6 August 2296 - Dominant Performance by Malone in University Point

The University Point Deathclaws racked up a win at Gwinnett Brewery Park, bumping off the Atom Cats, 5-1. Quentin Malone, who started for University Point, pitched effectively for his team. Chree Overby converted his 1st save in 2 tries. The Deathclaws move to 25-30 with the win, while the Cats drop to 31-24.

Malone was in the zone all game. He frustrated Atom hitters while giving the Deathclaws 8 innings of quality work. Malone threw 145 pitches, allowing 4 hits and getting 7 punchouts.

"If I do my job, we've usually got a good chance to win the game," said Malone.

6 August 2296 - Party Boys Earn 7-3 Win Versus The Slog

The home crowd had a good time watching the The Slog Ghouls and Nordhagen Beach Party Boys get after it.

The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys bested the The Slog Ghouls, 7-3, at Red Rocket Stadium. Brian Masterson was one of the standouts. He was 2 for 3 with a home run, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Nordhagen Beach now has a 3-game win streak.

Dustin Mart took Edwin Mass deep in the bottom of the first. His 3-run home run put the Party Boys on top, 3-0. In all, Mart had 2 singles in addition to the home run, while going 3 for 5.

"Winning never gets dull," said Masterson.

7 August 2296 - Assaultrons End Carrotflower's Streak

Joel Carrotflower, second baseman for the County Crossing Bloodbugs, gave it a good try, but his time chasing history came to an end when he went hitless in 4 tries against the East Boston Prep Assaultrons today. Not only did the Assaultrons break his 24-game hitting streak, they also beat County Crossing by the score of 2-1.

"Now that the streak has ended, I can admit I'll breathe a bit easier the next time I step up to bat," Carrotflower said, speaking with the media after the game. "It was tough because I put a little pressure on myself. Now that it's over, I will definitely be a little bit looser at the plate."

For the season Carrotflower has hit .355 with no home runs and 33 RBIs. He has played in 56 games and scored 34 times.

7 August 2296 - Talkington Helps Nordhagen Beach Outscore The Slog

The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys topped the The Slog Ghouls by the score of 13-11, with the biggest share of the credit going to third baseman Tommy Talkington. Talkington went 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for the Party Boys on the day. Sia Abber got the save, the 5th for him this season. The 5th-place Party Boys have won 4 in a row.

Tomas Jones chipped in for Nordhagen Beach, stroking a crucial run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning. For the game, the center fielder was 3 for 5 with 3 singles, while scoring 2 times.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Jones.

By the Party Boys defeating the Ghouls twice in a row, The Slog has now slipped behind Salem for second place in the Brotherhood League.

7 August 2296 - Sunshine Tidings Shut Out by Schneier

In a very sharp performance at Valentine Detective Agency Field, Chris Schneier of the Starlight Lady Killers blanked the Sunshine Tidings Chemists, 1-0. He permitted 12 hits and finished with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks in the Lady Killers victory.

"Chris goes out there and just goes about his business," Lady Killers player-coach City Moore said in his postgame press conference. "I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. No matter the pitch, you know he's going to be where he needs to be."

Checking out his stats for the year, Schneier has racked up 3 wins and 4 losses in 8 starts, 4.11 ERA and struck out 25 batters in 50.1 innings.

7 August 2296 - Abernathy and Sunshine in Playoffs

The division race for the Institute League may not yet be decided, but the two teams at the top are in the playoffs. With wins today, both the Abernathy Adamantium and Starlight Lady Killers have clinched spots in the CBO playoffs.

Currently, the Adamantium hold a one-game advantage over the Lady Killers with four games remaining.

Next weekend, Abernathy hosts Sunshine Tidings, while the Lady Killers travel to Lexington.

7 August 2296 - Morris Hits 2 home runs in Deathclaws Win

The University Point Deathclaws trumped the Atom Cats, 6-4, at Gwinnett Brewery Park. University Point third baseman Ryan Morris was terrific. He was 2-4 with 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. University Point has 3 straight wins, Atom 3 straight losses.

With University Point leading 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Morris hit a fastball from Jesse Emacipated for a 2-run home run. It was his 13th home run of the season and put the Deathclaws ahead, 6-2.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," Morris said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."

8 August 2296 - Masterson Excels, But Ghouls Win in Avoiding Sweep

Nordhagen Beach second baseman Brian Masterson had a good game in a losing cause. His team fell, 8-5, to The Slog at Red Rocket Stadium. Masterson was 4 for 4 with 2 home runs, 2 singles, and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Flotsam DiPasquale converted his 4th save in 4 tries. The win puts The Slog at 29-28 this season.

The Slog relied on the hitting of C.T. Woodard to pick up the win. The second baseman clubbed a 2-run single in the top of the second inning to put the Ghouls on top, 2-0. For the game, Woodard had 1 home run and 2 singles in 5 at-bats.

"You can't get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I'm just happy we got the win," Woodard told Publick Occurrences.

By avoiding the sweep, The Slog is still in position for a possible playoff spot in the Brotherhood League, pending what East Boston Prep, Salem, and Finch Farm do later today. There could be a three-way tie for second place should the Assaultrons and Four Leafs win today. A win by Finch Farm clinches the league title.

8 August 2296 - Masterson Keeps Hit Streak Alive

With 4 hits at Red Rocket Stadium today, Brian Masterson added another game to his hitting streak -- the Nordhagen Beach second baseman has now hit safely for 20 games in a row. But the hitting feat wasn't enough for the Party Boys today, as they fell, 8-5, to the The Slog Ghouls.

"Frankly, I don't care about hits," The Slog manager Mack O'Shea said later. "I'll let him get 4 hits in 4 at-bats if it means we get a win."

Brian Masterson singled in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off Jaden Jones in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Jaden Jones in the 5th, walked in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

This year Masterson is batting .322 with 6 home runs.

8 August 2296 - Deathclaws Win 8-7 Walk-Off

In the 8-7 University Point win over Atom, the impact of Jeremy Nicholson was substantial. Nicholson, who is on pace to hit 11 home runs this season, hit 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. University Point has now won 4 straight, while the Cats have lost 4 in a row.

The Deathclaws procured the win, in large part because of second baseman Jason Harris. In the bottom of the tenth, he produced the game-winning run-scoring single.

"To not win that game stings a little bit," said Atom owner Zeke Cat.

With the loss, the Cats still have yet to clinch the wild card spot in the Minutemen League. Their magic number remains at one for the slot.

8 August 2296 - Egret Scrappers in CBO Playoffs

The home crowd had a good time watching the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers and Egret Scrappers get after it. In the end, the Scrappers' victory proved to be an important one, earning them the wildcard spot in the Railroad League for the CBO playoffs.

A good performance from center fielder Bill Chaney helped the Egret Scrappers defeat the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers, 12-3. Chaney hit 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice for the Scrappers. With the win, Egret raised its record to 33-24.

Jason Juras, the Egret third baseman, contributed a 2-run single in the bottom of the first inning to make the score 3-0, Scrappers. For the game, Juras was 1 for 4. He drove in 2 runs.

"We'll savor this win," Chaney told a Publick Occurrences correspondent, "then get ready for the next game."

8 August 2296 - Four Leafs Win League

Finch Farm rode a fine outing from starter Montes Evans to victory over the Salem Witch Hats at The Coven of Salem. The final score was 5-2, clinching the Brotherhood League crown. Steve Warwar earned the save, his 6th. The victory gives Finch Farm a record of 34-23.

Bill Hulk, the 25-year old first baseman, had a direct impact on the outcome. Hulk contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put Finch Farm up, 3-2.

"I thought we played a nice game," Hulk said. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."

Due to victories by The Slog and East Boston Prep earlier in the day, the Witch Hats now see themselves in a three-way tie, all at 29-28, for the wildcard spot in the league going into the final weekend. Salem and the Assaultrons will eliminate one of each other when they face off in Salem next weekend. The Ghouls host County Crossing, currently in sixth place in the league.

DCR Week 19 Series Recap

The Confidence Man Minute with Travis Miles

This is a transcript from Travis Miles’ post-game sign off of Game Three of the DCR Series of the Week.

This is Travis Miles with "The Confidence Man Minute." You have just watched the Starlight Lady Killers complete the sweep against the Sunshine Tidings Chemists, winning today's game 10 to 6. The first two games of the series were true pitchers' duels, with the Lady Killers winning those 2 to 1 and 1 to 0. The Lady Killers also keep place with the Institute League's first-place team, the Abernathy Adamantium, which swept Concord earlier today. The Adamantium have a one-game lead heading into the final three.

Breaking down top players per game, I think it would be good to look at both teams' pitchers in Games 1 and 2. In Game 1, Starlight's City Moore earned the complete game win to move to 7 and 5 on the season. He allowed one earned run on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts in the 2-1 victory. The Chemists' Tony Bertha also pitched well, but fell to 5 and 9 on the season. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in eight innings.

In Game 2, Starlight's Chris Schneier spread out 12 hits in a complete-game shutout. He walked three and struck out three in the game. The Chemists had 15 base runners in the game, but could never find a clutch hit with a man on base. For the Chemists, Tim Fusion pitched an even better game than Schneier despite the loss to drop him to 9 and 7. In eight innings, he allowed one earned run on three hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Today's game leaned more to offense with the 10-6 final. The eighth hitter for the Killers, Justin People earned the Game MVP honors after going 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.

We have second choice for next week's game, so we will let you know in tomorrow morning's program. It looks likely the Brotherhood League has a tight race for the wildcard spot, so we anticipate either staying here in the Institute League to see how the league race finishes up or going to the Minutemen League if that wildcard race is still alive.

Whereever we are, we promise the best baseball broadcast in the Commonwealth. From Valentine Detective Agency Field, it has been a fun weekend here at the Drive-In. Kudos to Piper Wright and the BosCom technology with playing video replays for us on the left field wall. We look forward to more moving pictures for baseball. Hear me next weekend!

WRVR Week 19 Series Recap

The Mole Rat Teeth with George, Anne, and Rex

G: Good evening, baseball fans from the Commonwealth. We had an exciting weekend here at the home of the Witch Hats in Salem, and we now know that the Brotherhood League has been the most exciting all season. That continues this weekend, too, thanks to other games in the league.

Today, the biggest news is that the Finch Farm Four Leafs won in this one, 5-2. With that win, the Four Leafs not only avoided the sweep, but they also earned the Brotherhood League banner.

R: Excuse me, George, but can you wax poetic on the meaning of the "banner"?

G: No problem, Rex. The banner is a hanging cloth like a flag that will have the name of the league winner sewed on it. There can only be one league winner per year in each league, so that means in the 2297 season, Finch Farm will be hanging its 2296 banner in its stadium.

R: Interesting and informative as always, George. Do continue with your summary.

G: So Finch Farm won the league, but Salem won the series. With the other results in the league, tonight's loss does drop Salem but they came out in good shape. Now, the Witch Hats, The Slog, and East Boston Prep are all tied for second place and the wildcard spot at 29-28. That makes next weekend really interesting.

A: George, I have a question, too. What happens if all three teams finished tied for second place?

G: Well, we know Salem and the Assaultrons play next weekend, so that cannot happen. Actually, I don't know what would happen in that case. I do know that a two-way tie means those two teams meet for a winner-take-all single-game matchup.

A: Interesting. Well, I will jump in now with my Bottoms Up Award. There were not a lot of lead changes in this series, so I am going to use a late clutch hit for this week. In Game One, the Four Leafs and Witch Hats were tied at one apiece going into the 7th inning. In that inning, the Hats ended up scoring four runs. However, the first came with two outs and a man on second base. That was when Sean Koerster doubled off the left-center field wall for an RBI double. By putting up Salem 2-1 at that time, Koerster's hit proved to be the game-winning hit in a 5-1 final.

R: Our Sportiest Sport will be a player from the Four Leafs today. Though pitcher Montes Evans was awarded the Player of the Game in today's 5-2 Finch Farm win, I am going to go with left fielder Danny Honeycutt. In today's game, he took the Leafs on his back and led them to the league crown by going 3 for 5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. He is a Sporty Sport.

G: Thank you, both. For the series, we saw a high-scoring blowout in Game 2, when Salem won 16-5, so it is easy to find a Most Outstanding Payer who produced a lot of offense. That would be Salem third baseman Pistol Schmidt. In the three games, he went 6 for 12 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored, seven RBI, and two walks. He had an excellent weekend for his team, and his two-run home run today was the Hats' only score.

OK, well, that will do it in Week 19 from Salem. It may come as no surprise, but we get first choice for next weekend's game. The most compelling series of Week 20 will be right here in Salem when the Hats host East Boston Prep. The winner of that series still needs The Slog to win as many or one fewer games, but still the Witch Hats and Assaultrons are battling for their playoff lives. So, Anne and Rex, we are staying put and we will make our bunks right here in The Coven. Let's hope no spooks come in.

From the Charles River Trio, I am George Cooper. With Anne Hargraves and Rex Goodman, this has been "The Mole Rat Teeth." Let's take it away with a song appropriate for Salem, Betty Hutton's "He's a Demon, He's a Devil, He's a Doll": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6LlW902JRk

2296 Week 19 - The Week in Review

There are now three pennant winners. Only the Institute League remains.

Six of the eight playoff teams are determined. There is a wildcard spot still up for grabs in the Brotherhood League and Minutemen League, so those are the games to watch most closely. The Atom Cats need only a win or any loss by Goodneighbor. If the Quincy Gunners sweep the Cats, there would be at least a tie for second place in the ML.

2296 Players of the Week - Week 19

BL - Brotherhood League Selects Best Performer: Brian Masterson has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 17-year-old second baseman of the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys had a hot bat in the Brotherhood League over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors.

Masterson batted .727 with 8 hits in 11 at-bats, 3 home runs and 6 RBIs.

For the year Masterson has hit at a .322 clip with 24 RBIs, 6 home runs and 49 runs scored.

IL - Hirshfield Institute League's Hottest Hitter: 17-year-old Chris Hirshfield sent shock waves through Institute League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Institute League Player of the Week Award.

Hirshfield made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .583 average, 7 hits in 12 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 RBI.

Where the Abernathy Adamantium left fielder goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Hirshfield certainly made his mark last week.

This year Hirshfield is batting .388 with 12 home runs and 65 RBIs.

ML - Nicholson: Big Hit in the Minutemen League: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Minutemen League, but last week Jeremy Nicholson of the University Point Deathclaws reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Nicholson rocked opposing pitching for a .545 average (6-for-11), 2 home runs and 4 RBIs to come away with the award.

To date this year Nicholson is batting .349 with 10 home runs.

RL - Gerdenheimer Takes This Week's Trophy: Crops Gerdenheimer is respected by most Egret Scrappers fans for his no-frills style of play. The 16-year-old right fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Railroad League Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .727 average (8-for-11) with 1 home run, 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

A look at his season totals shows Gerdenheimer with 16 home runs, .368 BA, .455 OBP, 61 RBIs and 61 runs scored.

August 2296 - News and Notes - August 10

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

10 August 2296 - Baby Poster Sends the Wrong Message?

A propaganda poster that was posted around Vault 81 has led to a discussion about female roles in the Commonwealth. Vault 81 overseer Gwen McNamara has defended the poster, stating that it will help population growth in the Commonwealth, especially at Vault 81 where there are few newborns and young children.

The poster, which we have attached below, reads, "Ladies, help the Commonwealth - have more babies" and "Help Vault 81 flood the CBO." It shows a picture of a woman in a baseball uniform, a baby in a baseball cap holding a baseball, and the Vault 81 logo.

According to McNamara, "I think it sends out a good message. We have a lack of children born, even though the adult population is growing. We won't be able to sustain the industries we need if people don't start having babies."

Part of the controversy is why the poster is directed at women and not women and men or couples or something that would put the burden on both parents instead of mothers. The post-War Commonwealth has not been like the pre-War in its values where men were considered to be the capsmakers and women were meant to oversee the nannybot cook and clean and take care of the children.

One Vault 81 woman who wished to remain anonymous does not like the message. "This is brahmin****," she said while scrubbing her apron with Abraxo. "I'm sitting here cleaning our pod while my husband is making 'business trips' to ballparks. If they want me to make babies, then let me watch the ghoul-******* games."

McNamara said that she thought a message of producing more baseball players could be an appeal. "I mean, we love that baseball is here, so let's have some more of our inhabitants make the CBO. Austin [Engill] has been a big role model, so hopefully we have more players in the 24th century."

Engill, the shortstop for Abernathy and the #1 overall pick, was born and raised in Vault 81, the only CBO player from that vault. Austin

A Diversion - Get to Know Your Settlements, Owners, and Corporations

Today in the CBO

Settlements Today

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

11 August 2296 - A Diversion: Back to Starlight Drive-In

Each Tuesday for the upcoming weeks through the playoffs, we will feature one of the settlements, teams, and owners of the Commonwealth Baseball Organization. This is meant to tell you more about life in the Commonwealth, as well as give you more information about the teams and their owners.

Instead of featuring a different settlement this week, I returned to Starlight Drive-In this week to meet up with Irish Cait and my sister, Piper Wright. One thing I did not realize was that Piper and Cait had been on their own duo quests to different drive-ins and movie theaters throughout the New England Commonwealth.

Their search? Movie reels.

Their searches, along with promoting BpsCom's TV stakes, have turned up several usable movie reels found near Nuka World and as far away as Mount Desert Island.

Now Starlight Drive-In is sure to attract more visitors when they can show several movies. Here are some of the latest movies they have, with accompanying movie posters:

Night of the Fish Men's Revenge

According to the promo, "Out of the mist and slime, of a time before the history of man, birthed from the deep of Earth's unexplored oceans, comes an abomination science cannot comprehend, to menace the Earth! And attack!"

Starring Carl Dickson and Synthia Marsh, featuring Kit Denning, Anton Collins, and Mae Whitley, with Nikolai Barsuvian as The Fish Men, this movie in Terrorvision sees fish men from the deep take over a peaceful seaside resort. Like the Mirelurk Kings of the wastes, these fish men desire two things: men's flesh and beautiful women's bodies. Hold on to your loved ones, the Fishermen from the Deep are coming!

This reel was found at Eden Meadows Drive-In on Mount Desert Island. The harbormen that settled there had more than one reel of each movie, so they allowed Piper and Cait to take one of each.

The Fightin' Furies: Last Stand at Fort Mcgee

According to the promo, “Keith McKinney and Stanley Van Robb star as The Fightin' Furies in Last Stand at Fort McGee, a Western from the makers of Aces and Eights. Grab your pistols and get ready for a[sic] old fashioned stand off[sic] as the Fightin' Furies return in Last Stand at Fort McGee. Time to saddle up and circle the wagons as The Fightin' Furies take on bandits, Apache braves, and even the Confederate Army in Last Stand at Fort McGee.

The film starred Keith McKinney, Stanley Van Robb, Angela Lucio, and Molly Ryder as "Polecat Polly." It was produced by Alberto DeLeone and directed by Sergio Amore. The film was advertised as being produced in gorgeous "PanaLuxe" color. When the film was released it topped the box office.

This movie was also found at Eden Meadows Cinema.

Love Sets Sail!

Love Sets Sail! is pre-War romance movie produced by Andrew Levine and written by Shane Velloric and published by OEI Motion Pictures. It stars Vera Keyes, Mike Berlyn, and Vince Natali. Love Sets Sail! performed well at the box-office when released, drawing the largest crowds of any of Vera's other movies; however, because of its poorly written script, it was panned by critics and reviewers.

Love Sets Sail! was believed to have been lost; however, Nate supposedly found a working copy in a closet in Beaver Creek Lanes on Mount Desert Island and gifted it to Cait.

Cait describes the movie as "a bunch of lovey-dovey love triangle manure, if you ask me. But are you asking?"

Keyes was the beautiful star of the movie, and Nate said he learned som information about her from old Vegas. According to information gathered from Gilda Broscoe, "Using the stage name 'Vera Keyes,' the young starlet made a name for herself in Hollywood for her impeccable beauty and for appearing in a number of poorly-written romances that drew large box office crowds regardless of critical reception, such as Love Sets Sail!." Broscoe does not care much for Keyes, though.

Another Day in the Monster Factory

Another Day in the Monster Factory was a pre-War 3D monster horror movie released around 2077, starring Grout Piroshkin, Jimbob Johnster and Grit Cobb. It was directed by Ivan Pelinski.

The promo simply states, "They fight monsters!! Someone has to!"

This movie, filmed in 3-D which requires using 3-D glasses, was acquired by Piper and Cait at a movie dinner theater at Nuka World. They also were able to find several boxes of 3-D glasses to watch the campy monster movie with lots of jump scares of the monsters "jumping through the screen."

Communists from Space!!

Communists From Space!! was a pre-War sci-fi movie released around 2077, starring Chett Bolder and Petunia Belle. No details on the plot of the film or other information are known, except for what is on the poster. According to the poster, "They are coming for our country . . . from the stars!!"

Cait viewed the film once and gave this as her summary: "It's Chinese from space and some other people too, and they keep calling them the 'Red Death from Space.' The two heroes, named Max Spaceman and Belle Starhopper go to space to fight them, but Belle only screams and holds on to Max while he blasts away all the red death people. It's got good action but I just don't understand why you have a woman that just screams and gets in the way. Either take a laser gun and blast them or get the **** back to Earth and find someone who can. At least Max kills every last one of them and then gets to kiss the girl."

This movie reel was already at Starlight Drive-In in a pile of movie reels. Copies were sent to Nuka World and Eden Meadows Cinema.

Gilda Broscoe - A Movie Star in the Flesh. Well, sort of.

Today in the CBO

Settlements Today

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

11 August 2296 - Gilda Broscoe: A Movie Star in the Flesh; Well, Sort Of

In continuing this post due to our terminal restrictions on attaching photographs, I am now going to feature Gilda Broscoe, who was instrumental in not only the collection of these movies, but some of their backstories, too. It is noted that we do not have any notes as to whether or not what Broscoe said is true, but it seems that "Hollywood Gossip" was its own entertainment in the pre-War world.

Gilda Broscoe was a movie actress before the Great War. Today, she still lives, though she is no longer the beautiful redhead of the silver screen. Instead she had her brain transplanted into a robobrain, just like the body of John-Caleb Bradberton.

Gilda Broscoe - 2288 - There were no pictures of Broscoe available pre-war

Piper met Broscoe where she lives in Vault 118 beneath the Cliff's Edge Hotel on Mount Desert Island. Piper recorded information about Broscoe on a terminal. Piper noted that Broscoe mostly spoke about herself, but she did reveal a bit of gossip about some of the other stars in the Pre-War movies. Piper also noted that Nate Howard was present for the interview. Nate had mentioned he always had a "thing" for Broscoe, and he flirted with the robot like she was still the starlet of more than 200 years ago.
"That was . . . gross," Piper said. "Gilda Broscoe loved the attention, though."

We do not have any movie reels with Broscoe in them, but Piper did find out one tidbit of a movie we found where she was supposed to be the lead in Love Sets Sail. Another movie star whom we do have a movie reel of is Keith McKinney. Like Broscoe, he is in Vault 118, and he and Broscoe are a couple. McKinney starred in The Fightin's Furies: Last Stand at Fort McGee.

Piper's terminal entries below:

"Once a redhead with literal movie star looks, Gilda Broscoe was a famous actress before the Great War, acting in many movies. She also was in musicals when they were in fashion, such as The Beautiful Cigar Girl, Wagons on the Plain and A Woman of the Royal Navy. According to her, Gilda would have gotten the leading female role in Love Sets Sail!, but Vera Keyes got it instead due to her uncle being the producer; for this, she holds a grudge against Ms. Keyes. While on set, she was privy to many Hollywood scandals and rumors and attended lavish Hollywood parties. She first met Keith McKinney when they co-starred in the major movie Empire on the Nile; she played Cleopatra VII Philopator and Keith played Marcus Antonius Creticus. From then, she developed feelings towards him, though this was an unrequited affair as Keith is homosexual and still in the closet. However, she refuses to acknowledge the situation, believing it to be just part of the movie star life she chose. She even went as far as trying to convince Keith that the feelings he had towards Ezra were false. Because she was embittered, she occasionally sought out affairs of her own. She once had an affair with Santiago Avida for "a few dozen years," though speaks very lightly about it, mostly due to Santiago's obsessiveness, which she describes as even a little much for her. With such surroundings for the past two centuries, she is quite desperate for attention and open to an affair with the Sole Survivor.

Vera Keyes - a photograph

After Piper and Nate discovered Vault 118, they had a wild ride through pre-War elites and their perpetual lives before the fallout. Piper wrote, "Before the war, she along with the other denizens of Vault 118 were enticed by the privilege and exclusivity into accepting a paid spot in the vault by Ezra Parker. The deciding factor for her, however, wasn't the opulence, it was Keith's insistence, having fallen for Ezra's manipulations becoming its first investors. Unbeknownst to them, it was an experiment by Vault-Tec and a scam by Ezra. Although she was taken for quite a large sum of money from Mr. Parker, this had the side effect of saving them all from the experiments that would have been conducted.

"It was here that she and the rest of the residents of Vault 118 were convinced to extend their lives by both Doctor Bert Riggs and his wife Julianna using Dr. Riggs' robobrain research. This was successful, as she and the rest of the denizens of the vault survived for the next two centuries. However, this was not without its side effects; one cost not readily apparent was derangement. Although Doctor Riggs was able to solve the problem of the robobrains losing their identity in his development, he was not able to save their sanity. She, like the rest of her compatriots of Vault 118, lost their sense of time, and their isolation helped them lose their sense of reality. Already having a high opinion of herself, she believed that once the Sino-American War was over, she would be able to return to acting and usher in a new golden age of cinema. She, along with Keith, continued to practice their art long into the next few centuries.

"This was the state of things until Ezra was murdered in the vault. Before he was discovered dead, Gilda overheard Julianna Riggs argue with Ezra over the state of the vault. Although Keith's baseball bat was the murder weapon, she refuses to believe that Keith was the murderer."

For the record, Nick Valentine was brought in to complete the investigation, where he found Ezra was the actual murderer, having faked his death by murdering Julianna and then pretending to be her.

About McKinney, Piper wrote, "Keith McKinney used to be a famous Hollywood actor. Before the Great War, he was selected as a participant for the Vault 118 social experiment. He was then convinced by Bert Riggs and his wife to transfer his brain into a robobrain. Since the Great War, he has been the partner of Gilda Broscoe.

Keith McKinney - 2288

"He stars in the film The Fightin’ Furies: Last Stand at Fort McGee . . . as well as several unseen films titled Empires of the Nile and Dutch Diggers of Dusseldorf.Keith has a secret love for Ezra, but implies that Ezra already knows and ignores him."

McKinney was not interviewed by Piper. One thing that Piper is still seeking is another movie starring McKinney that she hopes to gift to Nate. That movie is Swing for the Fence. According to Piper, "Very little is known about the film, other than that it involved baseball, and that McKinney kept a prop baseball bat called Fencebuster from the movie in his room in Vault 118."

August 2296 - News and Notes - August 12-15

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

12 August 2296 - Oberland Closer to Miss Weekend

Oberland T-51s closer Aaron Still will be unavailable in the closing weekend. Still, who was jerking and twitching erratically during a team meeting, was suspected of being under the influence of Psycho.

August Oberland announced after the meeting that Still was not playing in the final weekend, probably for chem suspension. Still was not seen after the team practice at Egret Tours Marina, but there was apparently a brahmin heading north towards Vault 81. Dr. Jacob Forsythe at Vault 81 treats chem addictions, in addition to medical problems.

Still is 4-3 with 14 saves out of 18 attempts and a 3.68 ERA on the season. The 7th-round pick of the T-51s, he has allowed 12 earned runs on 30 hits with 14 walks and 44 strikeouts in 29.1 innings. Still is considered one of the better relief pitchers in all of the CBO, and he will be a valuable player for the playoffs.

Oberland has already clinched the Railroad League at 40-17. They finish the season at the Egret Scrappers, who will represent the RL as the wildcard team. The Scrappers are 33-24 which would place them as the 6th seed in the eight-team tournament if the playoffs started today. Egret is looking to avoid having to play either Oberland or the Warwick Mirelurks in the first round.

13 August 2296 - Four Leafs Sneak Past Party Boys, 14-13

The Finch Farm Four Leafs defeated the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, 14-13, at Finch Family Park.

Finch Farm second baseman Alec Bullets had a superb performance. He went 3 for 5 with 3 doubles and a walk, while scoring 4 runs and driving in 5. Steve Warwar, now 1-0, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 1 and walking 0. The victory gives Finch Farm a record of 35-23.

The game was decided with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. With Finch Farm trailing 13-12, Danny Honeycutt hit a curveball from Sia Abber to center for a 2-run single. Just like that, the Four Leafs had a walk-off win.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Finch Farm manager Jake Finch.

13 August 2296 - 5-Hit Blitz by Nordhagen Beach's Jones

A big day at bat for Tomas Jones of the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys still ended with a loss.

The Nordhagen Beach center fielder did all he could do, going 5-for-5, but it was not enough to overcome the Finch Farm Four Leafs. They triumphed over Nordhagen Beach 14-13 at Finch Family Park.

Tomas Jones hit an RBI double in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a two-run double in the 6th, walked in the 7th and singled in the 8th.

This year Jones is batting .381 with 96 hits, 8 home runs, 43 RBIs, 18 walks, .422 OBP and has scored 46 runs.

13 August 2296 - Iddings Hot, Deathclaws Cold

It wasn't easy but Bruce Iddings made it look that way.

Iddings silenced the University Point Deathclaws, 17-0, in a Goodneighbor Hancocks triumph at Third Rail Stadium at S. Boston HS today. Despite the appearance of dominance, Iddings said later that he felt like he was struggling all game. He gave up no walks and 5 hits.

"It didn't feel quite right today, but I made the decision to bear down and work through it," he said. "I made a few mistakes but it goes to show what you can do with grit and not much else."

In 20 starts this year Iddings has posted 9 wins while suffering 8 losses. He has pitched 139.2 innings, allowed 172 hits, struck out 110 and has a 5.35 ERA.

13 August 2296 - Clutch Hitting Delivers Win for Gunners

The home crowd had a good time watching the Atom Cats and Quincy Gunners get after it.

Quincy shortstop Robbie Adams contributed to his team's 7-4 win over the Atom Cats. Adams, who is on pace for 41 RBI this season, went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored to lead the offensive attack for the Gunners. Reliever Ryan Kazarian picked up the win. His record improves to 1-0. Matt "Ace in the Hole" Hope took the loss.

Adams had a clutch at-bat in the bottom of the eighth for the Gunners. Coming up with the bases loaded and Quincy trailing 4-3, he hit a 2-run single.

"Robbie is still learning," said Gunners manager Little Larry. "The sky's the limit for him."

The win gives Quincy a season record of 29-29. With a sweep over the Cats, they have a chance of earning the wild card spot out of the Minutemen League.

14 August 2296 - Four Leafs Score 7 in 9th for Win

Nordhagen Beach left fielder Michael Fogcrawler was sensational. He went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Finch Farm beat the Party Boys, 13-12. Finch Farm is now riding a 3-game win streak.

The game was decided with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With Finch Farm trailing 12-11, Ginger Rogers hit a curveball from Sia Abber to center for a 2-run single. Just like that, the Four Leafs had a walk-off win. Just like that, Abber blew his second straight save attempt.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," Rogers said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."

14 August 2296 - Quincy Wins Again, Trails Wild Card Race by 1 Game

Quincy left-hander Manny McDuff pitched his team to victory over the Atom Cats at The Stone House. The final score was 6-2. Quincy has now won 3 straight, while the Cats have lost 6 in a row. With the win, the Gunners are now just one game behind the Cats for the Minutemen League wild card spot.

In the bottom of the first, Quincy catcher Stuart Costantino had a productive at-bat. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, Costantino stroked a 2-run single to center. It made the score 3-0, Quincy. For the game, he was 2 for 4 with 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs.

"It's nice to come out on top today," said McDuff.

Goodneighbor lost earlier today, eliminating the Hancocks from the race. Now, tomorrow's Game Three will determine if the Cats are in or if they have to play Quincy one more game for the wild card spot.

14 August 2296 - Mutfruit Whitewashes Diamond City

The Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers shut out the Diamond City Swatters 5-0 today behind the strong pitching of Nick Mutfruit. Mutfruit surrendered only 6 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 10.

Following the last out, Mutfruit appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Diamond City owner Moe Cronin, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Mutfruit's own player-coach Brad Westing then intervened with some words for his counterpart.

Cronin would not comment on the exchange, but at the Knuckle Punchers press conference, Mutfruit confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.

"[Cronin] basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Mutfruit said.

"And I told [Cronin] he was being a lousy loser," Westing added.

On his stats sheet this season Mutfruit shows a 9-6 record, 20 starts, 130 innings, 75 strikeouts and a 5.68 ERA.

15 August 2296 - Cronin Partnering with Poseidon Energy

Diamond City Swatters owner Moe Cronin has divulged that he is looking to invest heavily in Poseidon Energy with the possibility of dual sponsorship of both the Swatters and the 2297 minor affiliate.

Poseidon Energy Logo

Poseidon Energy was the Boston area's main supplier of energy before the War. According to a terminal entry, "Poseidon Energy was an umbrella corporation with its fingers in virtually all known forms of renewable and non-renewable power sources on both the east and west coasts of America, as well as research and development of new, more powerful weapons through their subsidiaries, so long as they remained profitable. One of its most notable features was the unified PoseidoNet, a national transfer system that provided instantaneous communication between various Poseidon facilities including Atomic Powerplant № 5, Control Station Enclave, Navarro, HELIOS One, the power plants of Appalachia, and other locations throughout the United States and possibly the world."

A Poseidon Energy plant was left intact near Warwick Homestead and Quincy. Before it was occupied by raiders, but now a number of people are looking to get it back up and operating so that settlements do not need to rely on unreliable local powering systems.

In addition to looking to invest in Poseidon Energy, Cronin also took the opportunity to introduce the name and location of Diamond City's minor league team. According to Cronin, the team will be located in the Southwest Quadrant in Natick Banks and be called the Big Leaguers. Players modeled the home and away uniforms pictured below.

15 August 2296 - Party Boys Swept to End 2296 Season

The Finch Farm Four Leafs topped the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys by the score of 9-2, with the biggest share of the credit going to first baseman Joe Mahaney. Mahaney was 2 for 2 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 4 times for the Four Leafs on the day. The losing streak for Nordhagen Beach has now reached 4 games.

Alec Bullets, who is tied for 8th in the with a .423 on-base percentage, chipped in for Finch Farm with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the second. For the game, the second baseman had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 RBI.

"We'll keep playing hard and let the chips fall where they may," said Finch Farm manager Jake Finch.

15 August 2296 - Four Leafs End Masterson's Streak

The 22-game hitting streak of Nordhagen Beach Party Boys second baseman Brian Masterson came to an end today at Finch Family Park. The Finch Farm Four Leafs held him hitless in 4 at-bats and also sent the Party Boys down to defeat, 9-2.

Later, Masterson acknowledged to BNN reporters that the hit streak meant something to him.

"It was special," he said, "but I think other people make a bigger deal out of it than I do, or the players do. It was what we're all supposed to do; go out and hit the ball and try to score runs. It was a cool deal, but it's over now. Let's try to start a new one."

Masterson finished the season batting .320 this year with 6 home runs, 26 RBIs and 53 runs scored. He has 78 hits in 244 at-bats.

15 August 2296 - Ghouls, Witch Hats in Tie Breaker

County Crossing defeated The Slog and Salem defeated East Boston Prep, leading to a two-way tie for second place in the Brotherhood League.

Now the Ghouls and Witch Hats, both 31-29 to finish the regular season, will have to match up for one more game to determine the wild card representative from the BL.

Because the teams went 6-6 against each other, Nate Howard declared the home field would be determined by flipping a bottle cap. Salem won the flip, so they will host the Ghouls tomorrow night. The Slog started preparing to travel right after losing to the Bloodbugs since they would have to play at the winner of tonight's Salem and East Boston Prep game for the tie breaker.

15 August 2296 - Adamantium Clinches IL

It took a while, but the Abernathy Adamantium avoided a sweep today, and in turn, clinched the Institute League title.

Joel Mutfruit was a major contributor to the 6-0 Abernathy win over Sunshine Tidings. The Adamantium third baseman went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. The winning pitcher was Neil Watson. His record is now 9-4. The right-hander went 8.2 innings, allowing no runs on 5 hits for the Adamantium. The victory gives Abernathy a record of 36-24.

The Adamantium benefited from an error in the bottom of the fifth inning. Abernathy was leading 2-0 when Donny Kowalski hit a 2-run single that was misplayed. It put Abernathy in front, 4-0.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Kowalski.

Abernathy will now get at least one home series guaranteed, while Starlight Drive-In will be the wild card team and have to travel for its first series.

15 August 2296 - Quincy Sweep Leads to Game 4

Against all odds, the Quincy Gunners completed a sweep of the Atom Cats. The two teams will now play again tomorrow in Quincy in a winner-take-all spot in the CBO Playoffs.

Ben Pettinato was a vital contributor to the 11-10 Quincy victory over Atom. The Gunners third baseman was 3 for 5 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3. Wick Prater converted his 13th save in 16 tries. This loss makes it 7 in a row for Atom.

David Driftwood, who is on pace to hit 11 home runs this season, contributed to the Quincy win with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, the right fielder had 3 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 2 singles, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBI.

"We're stringing together some nice wins," said Quincy manager Little Larry.

DCR Week 20 Series Recap

The Confidence Man Minute with Travis Miles

This is a transcript from Travis Miles’ post-game sign off of Game Three of the DCR Series of the Week.

Good afternoon, listeners from the Commonwealth. We came into this weekend's series with the Quincy Gunners needing a sweep to have a chance at the post season. Well, guess what?

With today's thrilling 11-10 victory, the Gunners completed the sweep over the visiting Atom Cats, making both teams tied for second place in the Minutemen League at 31-29. That means these two teams will play bonus baseball tomorrow afternoon. One game, winner to the playoffs. Loser to spend the long fall and winter period at home farming or doing whatever they need to do to make caps.

This is Travis Miles with Diamond City Radio. You are listening to "The Confidence Man Minute." Today we wrap up our last series of the 2296 season, though we are going to broadcast tomorrow's game, so I am going nowhere on Sunday, and hopefully, so are you, Commonwealth.

Let's look at the standout performances from each of the three games. In Game One, the Gunners won 7-4 thanks to a four-run eighth inning. Gunners shortstop Robbie Adams received player of the game in that one. He went 2 for 4 with a home run, scored twice, and drove in three runs. His 8th-inning, two-RBI single gave the Gunners the lead for good in that one, going up 5-4 at the time.

In Game Two, Quincy scored the first six runs on the way to a 6 to 2 victory. Pitcher Manny McDuff got the victory and MVP honors. In a complete-game win, he pushed his record to 7-8 on the season. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He also doubled and scored in the game.

Today's best player was Quincy star Ben Pettinato. Remember when he was hitting below .100? I do! But not anymore. Today he went 3 for 5 to finish with a .389 batting average on the season. He doubled and homered, scored three times, drove in three, and walked once.

Like I said, we will be broadcasting tomorrow. After the game, we will analyze the playoff matchups. As I understand it, there is also the chance for a play-in game in the Brotherhood League, too, so we will do our best to see who the eight teams are and break down the first-ever CBO playoffs where teams are going to play interleague games that count! Who will win the Sole Survivor Series? It looks like Oberland and Warwick have the advantage with the best records in the CBO, but we shall see.

Anyway, thanks for listening to this edition of "The Confidence Man Minute with Travis Miles." Remember to tune in tomorrow to DC Radio at 3:00 PM when we start our one-hour pregame show and then start first pitch at 4:05 PM. Until then, hope you can enjoy some happening tunes.

WRVR Week 20 Series Recap

The Silver Locket with Anne, Rex, and George

A: Hi, everyone. This is Anne Hargraves, and you are listening to "The Silver Locket" with the Charles River Trio, Anne, Rex, and George. We had an exciting finish to an exciting series, and we also had news from earlier today that the winner of tonight's ball game would be playing against The Slog tomorrow.

R: Perchance a playoff before a playoff?

G: More like a runoff. Heh.

A: Yes, well, the home team Salem won tonight's game in exciting fashion with a three-run home run in the eighth inning. They win the game 4 to 2 and win the series 2 to 1. Now, they will host The Slog when the Ghouls arrive tomorrow. The expected start time is 7:05 PM.

Also, we will stay right here to broadcast that game so that we know which of those two teams will be in the Final Eight for the CBO playoffs. As we also heard, Diamond City Radio is in the same position with the Quincy Gunners tying the Atom Cats for second place.

Well, Rex and George, let's jump into the award winners for this series.

R: Will do, Anne. For this week's Sportiest Sport, I will select the game-winning hitter in the first game of this series. Trailing 7-5 in the top of the ninth, Lou Churchman came up to bat with the bases loaded after two walks and a single. Churchman proceeded to hit a grand slam to put the Assaultrons up for good, 9 to 7, in a 10 to 7 victory.

G: For this week's Top Pitcher, I am choosing Roberto Gonzales of Salem. In eight innings pitched in a 9-2 victory in Game Two, he allowed two earned runs on nine hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. He also helped himself tremendously with the bat, going 3 for 3 with a double, a sacrifice fly, and three runs batted in.

A: This week I get the Most Outstanding Player. He would have also been the Bottoms Up Award winner because his big hit won tonight's ball game and gives the Witch Hats a chance to play in the playoffs. In the bottom of the eighth, Salem left fielder Tyler Spronk came up to bat with his team losing 2-1. Fail to score, and Salem would be stuck at home for the postseason. Well, Spronk answered and hit a three-run home run for the Witch Hats to win tonight's game, 4 to 2.

That is going to do it for "The Silver Locket." You have been listening to the 2296 regular season with the Charles River Trio. Tomorrow night, depending on the arrival time of The Slog Ghouls, we will have a broadcast of the final regular season game of 2296. In that one, the winner out of the Ghouls and these Witch Hats continue in the playoffs. The loser is finished. It will be exciting!

You know what else is exciting? Bob Crosby and the Bobcats, that's what! And for the East Boston Prep Assautrons, they have to find their way back home to Easy Town. Well, fellows, let Bob and the cats sing you on your way back home with "Way Back Home": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir1A74UA2YE

The Boys may have ended the season by being swept, but the first two games were very close and could have gone either way - and, in fact, NB shouldn't have been able to get close. One or two players picked up towards the end - thinking of Jones, Masterson - so just wait till next year!

Let's hope they can fill in the holes (i.e., relief pitching!) and then they can definitely be competitive in the BL.

2296 Week 20 - The Week in Review

Our eight teams are now set. On to the playoffs. Hopefully I can edit the schedule so that pitching works as expected. I asked on the General Discussions Forum: https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=318287.

I also notice that OOTP did not generate players of the week for the final week, and I don't feel like figuring that out, so no players of the week for Week 20. Instead, we get a feature on each league's best batting average.
