  • Our bullpen is a nightmare right now. An ERA of almost 5 behind a rotation that's over 5. Neither is sustainable but the bullpen faux pas tend to over emphasize a bad game. Absolutely nothing harder on a team than late collapses and we've surrendered at least 2 I can remember, 4 run or more leads in the 9th. Wright and his 8.64 ERA can be as mad as he needs to be but these are the games you look back on when you lose a division by 1 game....
  • Manager Sean Spicer has announced Matt Wright will no longer close for the time being. Nate Gross will take over. (I selected the option to allow the manager to configure the bullpen and this is what we will go with:
  • Closer Nate Gross, setting up McKitrick and Chris Becker, Middle guys Wright and Eichele, long guys Henderson and Rivera with Mark Williams the specialist.

Reed is the 6th player to ever homer 4 times in a single game, just the 4th to do it in a 9-inning game. The 2011 2nd rounder (83rd overall) by Brooklyn found his way to Washington in a November trade that same year in a trade for RF George Hood. He hit 3 2R HR's and a 3R shot. All-star Chris Cross hit in front of Reed and he went 4-5 scoring 4 and driving in 4. Combined they were 8-11 4 HR's 2 2B's 8R and 13 RBI's.

IRON PIGS MONTH IN REVIEW
The offense, not much to say, they're killing it and that's without Nieves hitting and Krieg's late April slump. Garcia could be an MVP winner and Rico Guzman and Daniel Perez are only going to get better. If Brumfield and McLain can keep their OBP mid to high .300's the offense will be a force.
  • Bush (4.85), Guijosa (5.68), and Morris (6.67) are the reason we didn't have a monster month. Joey Morris was PiOTM last April, not so much this April.
  • Merera and Avendano have been a much-needed steady veteran presence in their 9 starts.
  • Matt Wright was just awful.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH- Gus Garcia .429/.495/.667 4 2B 2 3B 4 HR 15 RBI 19 R 1.161 OPS
PITCHER OF THE MONTH- Alberto Merera 3-0 2.43 33.1 IP 19 K 8 BB 1.11 WHIP
MINOR LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH- (AA) Gil Ermatinger .355/.452/.613 5 HR 17 RBI 1.065 OPS
MINOR LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE MONTH- (AA) Luis Ornelas 4-0 1.50 He won the AA Pitcher of the month in the league as well

MINOR LEAGUE UPDATE
At Class A Joe Holsinger went 4-1 1.69 with 36 K's in 32 IP to win Pitcher of the Month honors. His command issues remain, as he walked 23 in those 32 IP.
Here's a look at the clubs after a month of play, what prospects are where and how they are doing.

AAA-NEW ORLEANS
  • Off to a terrible start and 1-9 in their last 10.
  • Their rotation has 2 potential 3-star talents in Brian Pennington (0-2 10.45) who missed 2 weeks in early April with a bad back and Yadier Perez (1-3 4.50) who was a waiver claim from LA last November.
  • The pen is full of 2.5 star potentials with Wilfredo Diaz (1.50) Aiden Forte (0.96) and lefty Trevor Carlson (.514) as arms I can use in a bind.
  • 4 2.5 star prospects are playing every day. Troy Zehnder (C-22) .182/.308/.200 had a miserable month.
  • 2-star IF Adam Higgins (22) is making the most of his call up hitting .306/.348/.500 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. Derek Dames (24) our next in line SS, hit .246/.325/.536 with 5 HR and 11 RBI in April.
  • John Tite (21) hit 31 HR's in AA last year and was banged up most of April so he's just starting to get AB's and the 4th 2.5 star guy is Kevin Dietz who hit just .192 this month.
  • 2-star Matt Chiquete, after a great AA season, has moved into the CF role and hit .366/.416/.549 in April.
  • Jimmy Young (22) hit 19 in AAA last year but a .216 Avg and .302 OBP have held him back. He started horribly and just heated up this last 2 weeks hitting 4 HR and driving in 8 but is sitting at .147 on the year.

AA-MILWAUKEE
  • Off to a great start at 16-6.
  • 2nd in R, 1st in AVG and OBP as well as 3rd in SP ERA.
  • Former 1st rounder Luis Ornelas won a bunch of April awards going 4-0 1.50. He's a 3.5 star prospect. He threw 30 IP 21 H 24 K to 6 BB with a 0.90 WHIP.
  • Three other 2.5 star arms in their rotation.
  • Augusto Campos (22) 1-1 6.23 acquired in a 2011 deal with Washington
  • Danny Eckenrode (24) 2-0 6.75 acquired in a 2013 deal with Phoenix
  • Jake Schmidt (22) 1-0 4.50 drafted in the 4th round (140th overall) last year
  • Bobby Hutcheson (23) still tantalizes with the stuff. 3-0 2.79 with 17 K in 19 IP but 10 BB. His past 3 years at AA he's 17-10 4.21 with 224 K's in 237 IP with 219 H but has walked 135 hitters. He cannot seem to harness the control or make that next step. He's still a 1.5 star prospect but time's ticking.
  • The bullpen features 3 prospects we're watching
  • 2.5 Star Justin Tar has a 4.92 ERA but control still haunts him.
  • 3.5 star 2013 draftee (3rd round 107th overall) John Alex was 0-6 21 Saves 2.81 at Class A last year, he's 1-2 1 Save 5.79 through a month this year.
  • Acquired last July from Fresno 4.5 star prospect Juan Arevalo is closing here and had a good April with 9 Saves. His control bit him (10K 9BB 9.2 IP) but he's a future closer.
  • 6 2.5 star or better prospects are in their lineup.
  • Gil Ermatinger (2.5* 22 Catcher) is off to a torrid start hitting .355/.452/.613 with 5 HR and 17 RBI. Gil was our 7th round pick last year (235th overall)
  • Cody Mullins (2.5* 22 Catcher) is another Catcher drafted last year, 10th round 331st overall. Had a god April hitting .294/.385/.412 while splitting time between spelling Ermatinger and DH'ing.
  • Andy Alvarado (2.5* 23 2B, 3B) spent a bit of time at AA last year before starting this season here. Struggled a bit .191/.322/.324 with 2 HR 9 RBI. Andy was acquired from San Diego last June.
  • A.J. Lanigan (3* 20 IF) is hot. The 10th round pick (312th overall) in 2012 has surprised everyone. He had a great 2013 hitting .295/.366/.504 with 16 2B 12 HR 29 RBI at Albuquerque last year and is off to another great start hitting .293/.384/.467 with 3 2B 2 3B 2 HR and 13 RBI's.
  • Garrett Combs (2.5* 23 OF) acquired from Utah 3 weeks ago in a deal of minor leaguers. Elite defender across the OF with ++ speed. Hitting .235/.270/.329 so far.
  • Jaden Brown (2.5* 23 LF) drafted in the 13th round in 2011 (401st overall) he's sort of jumped onto the scene last year hitting .307/.416/.473 with 22 2B 11 HR and 55 RBI. This year an improved version saw him hit .395/.489/.500 in April with a HR and 10 RBI.

A-ALBUQUERQUE
  • Started 0-6 and are now 14-8
  • They are throwing the crap out of the ball, 2nd in SP ERA, 3rd in BP ERA. That's all with just 2 guys rated above 2-stars.
  • David Arroyo (2.5* 21) drafted 45th overall back in 2011. Was 10-4 4.09 over 25 starts here last year, started this year 2-1 2.08 through 5 starts this year.
  • Mike Felan (2.5* 22) drafted 600th overall in 2012 he's slowly, but steadily gotten better and opened eyes. Went 3-1 1.50 at Nashville last year and is 0-1 7 Saves 1.04 this year with an 0.81 WHIP.
  • Joe Holsinger (2* 22) is 4-1 1.69 with 36 K and 22 BB in 32 IP.
  • Blake Reynolds (2* 21) is 3-0 2.60 in 4 starts after going 5-5 4.03 last year after we acquired him in June from San Diego.
  • Their lineup has some potential talent including the highest rated prospect playing for us right now.
  • Dean Hahn (5* 19 C) drafted in the 2nd round last year (73rd overall) had a great April hitting .328/.366/.507 with 3 2B 3 HR and 8 RBI.
  • Jim Baxley (2.5* 22 C) 17th round pick last year (555th overall) had a tough start hitting .188/.278/.375 in April.
  • Josh Logan (2.5* 21 1B/2B) 15th round pick (465th overall) had a great year here last year hitting .318/.382/.485 with 13 2B 12 HR and 41 RBI. Off to a slow start .197/.329/.423 with 5 HR.
  • Jake Pena (2.5* 20 IF) 14th round (440th overall) in 2012. Had a good season at Nashville last year (.295/.373/.419) hitting 12 2B 6 HR and driving in 21. Off to a solid start .253/.364/.440 with 5 2B 3 HR and 10 RBI.
  • Enrique Garza (2.5* 21 IF) drafted to be a potential answer at SS he struggled a bit at Milwaukee last year hitting .239/.291/411 with 18 2B and 13 HR driving in 48. His defense has not progressed and he looks to be a 1B or 2B though his bat won't likely play at 1B.
  • Edwin Mejia (2.5* 20 OF) Back here after a great run at Nashville got him called up last year, where he struggled hitting just .174. Tough April .217/.270/.361 but he did hit 3 HR's. Acquired last year in a deal with the “other” Chicago club.
  • Johnny Blackwell (2.5* 20 OF) Monster power, drafted in the 3rd round in 2012 (94th overall) for his raw power. Hit 28 last year in 126 starts here. Off to a big start, homering 7 times in April and hitting .273.
  • On the international FA front we signed three players recently. 2 5-star prospects in SS Marcello Dazzi and OF Teobaldo Pintalho and 3.5* OF Javier Dominguez. Dazzi jumped to 32nd on the IBL prospect list and Pintalho 67th.

  • The Austin Roughnecks made a ton of moves this winter in what felt like a push to be a contender including signing former MVP Andrew Jacobi. As of the 12th of May they're 12-21 and 7 games out, the worst record in the IBL.
  • Talk about parity. In the AL and NL combined there are a total of 3 teams that are 4 or more games out of the 2nd WC position. Meaning 29 of 32 teams are within 3 games of a post-season spot. It's just past 30 games, about 1/5th of the way through, but I don't remember it ever being like this.
  • Additionally, 22 of 32 teams are within 1 game or better of .500.

IRON PIG NEWS

IRON PIGS-ROADRUNNERS SWAP STARTERS
The details were finally ironed out and the Iron Pigs and Phoenix Roadrunners announced a deal involving both clubs starting pitchers. Chicago sent SP Bobby Guijosa and minor league IF prospect Roberto Becerra and one of their 2014 2nd round draft picks to Phoenix for SP Mike Perez and the Roadrunners 2014 2nd round draft choice. Phoenix did not disclose the amount but they will retain a portion of Perez's contract.

BACKROOM CHATTER
I couldn't watch another 5 walk 115 pitch 4.2 inning outing, I just couldn't. The guy battles, and was 35-28 with an ERA of 4.50 but the inconsistent start to start with the bullpen killing number of walks and pitch counts was too much. The prospect netted me a good bump into the early 2nd round with pick swaps as we mover 31st to 8th giving us 3 picks now in the top 62 (33, 49, and 62), the 49th was formerly the 72nd.
  • Perez is a free-agent at years end, and 35 years old but Phoenix took on 2 million of his remaining money. He is making 4.4 this year. He also gives us a 2nd LH starter.
  • He's a 4th or 5th starter but one who throws a lot more strikes. He's 106-130 3.99 over his 350 starts allowing 2122 H in 2110 IP with 1432 K's and 683 BB. His best season came 2 years ago when he went 14-12 3.84 over 33 GS and 183 IP.
  • There was a lot of angst over maybe calling up one of the arms at AAA who was pitching well but there were 40 man issues and no one there is lights out as of today.

  • On Thursday Miner SP Chris Andrezejewski tossed his league leading 2nd CG SHO beating Fresno 5-0 on 3 hits while fanning 5. 2011's third overall pick is now rated as the games best starter at just 25. He's 4-3 2.28 over his 11 starts in 79 IP allowing just 52 H while fanning 85 and walking 22 for a 0.94 WHIP. I think the Mike Johnson regret is going to go deep on this guy. I ended up firing the guy who wanted us to take him.....

MINERS DRUB EL PASO, TONY GONZALEZ HAS THE BEST DAY IN HISTORY!
The Pittsburgh Miners hammered El Paso 17-3 and in that game CF Tony Gonzalez did something never before seen. The 24 year old went 7-7 with a HR, scored 4 times and drove in 6 runs. No player has ever recorded 7 hits in a single game, much less a single 9 inning game.
The Miners tallied 21 hits and 11 walks. 19 of the 21 hits were singles.
  • On the last day in May Jay Hammer (SI) went 2-3 and his 6th inning 2B was his 2500 career hit. He's a career .308/.372/.454 hitter with 578 2B 108 3B 128 HR and 1026 RBI's with 1296 R and is 308-428 in SB. The 38 year old has led the league in H (1x) 2B (2x) 3B (4x) SB (1x) won two batting titles, led in OBP (1x) and WAR (1x).
  • He's a 4 time gold glove winner 8-time all star and a 5-time silver slugger.

MINOR LEAGUE UPDATE
AAA NEW ORLEANS
  • They went 13-15 and are 19-31 7 GB
  • John Tite (.296-7-12) Matthew Brittingham (.307-3-19) are hitting while the staff is struggling for the most part. Pennington is 1-5 8.74 Jose Ruiz is 2-4 3.86, John Timmerman is 2-4 3.81 and Aaron Camarillo after a bad 1st rehab start is 1-0 2.40
  • Trevor Carlson has 6 Saves and a 4.74

AA MILWAUKEE
  1. 10-18 May after a 16-6 April. They are 1 up in the division.
  2. AJ Lanigan (.322-10-33) and Gil Ermatinger (.287-8-28) pace the offense while a recent minor league deal brought in 3 players and OF Travis Rowell (24) was sent to the Hawks.

A ALBUQUERQUE
Went 15-13 and is 29-21 in first place.
  • Some may remember a few drafts ago I took a slugger named Josh Dufault. I now seem to collect big power, great eye, no contact 1B/DH types and so I shopped Josh and got 3 players in return from Charlotte. RP John Smith was sent to Albuquerque and SP Hendrick Rose as well.
  • The big surprise, pleasant one too, is Mike Johnson. The 1st overall pick in the draft is hitting .295-13-27 and hopefully is starting to find his way. Johnny Blackwell (.254-12-32) Dean Hahn (.318-7-20) Enrique Garza (.293-11-20) and Jonathan Vittone (.295-8-25) are all hitting.
  • David Arroyo (7-1 1.67) is likely to be called up soon, Joe Holsinger keeps doing his thing (.6-2 2.38) while Mike Felan has 14 Saves and a 2.04.

CHICAGO BRINGS BACK AN OLD FRIEND
After one of the worst and most embarrassing losses in club history Chicago wasted no time. Sending veteran LHP Matt Wright and P prospect Jason Montano to Fresno for former Iron Pig closer Mario Mendoza. Fresno had been looking to move Mendoza for a few weeks for reasons unknown, as their bullpen is ranked atop the NL.
The 14-0 loss and implosion of the bullpen and its season long struggles had forced them to look outside for solutions and that was not a message missed by any IBL team.
  • Fresno is 30-22 and 5 games up on San Francisco and LA in the NL West.
  • Wright was having a nightmare season (1-2 7.42) and is a FA at years end while 22 year old Montano was 3-1 4.68 at AAA New Orleans. He's on the 60-day IL and out 2-3 more months.
  • Mendoza, 1-0 16 Saves 1.68 in 22 appearances is signed through 2015 at a very affordable 2.76 million. Players in Chicago were elated at the news as Mendoza is a popular player in the clubhouse and the city and many were upset when GM Curt Schilling, after just days on the job, dealt the right hander.

BACKROOM CHATTER
The bullpen is beyond a disaster right now. These aren't bad nights, they're total meltdowns. Mendoza will slide into the mix for now with Gross still holding down the job. The move saved us over 3 million this year though that had zero to do with the reasoning.
A very good offense is being sabotaged by a bullpen that cannot seem to put 2 nights of pitching together.

2014 IBL AMATEUR DRAFT
We are sitting on 5 of the first 103 picks with 6 of the top 150. Not picking until 33rd but I have my eyes on a HS pitcher. It's likely we will lean on pitching early, to what degree I'm not sure but this draft will lean towards pitching if the arms are there early.

Here are the top 10 prospects going in, and where they were taken (ratings are our scouts):
  1. Nate McCormick (21) 4* CF big bat LHH 17th overall to Austin
  2. Cory Thompson (18) 5* SS Monster power, elite eye RHH 1st Overall to Columbus
  3. Carlos Garcia (21) 4* RF Big bat 53rd overall to Atlanta
  4. Mitch Newton (20) 3.5* 3B Big bat 31st overall to Cleveland
  5. Jeff Luebke (21) 5* SP Ace potential 2nd overall to San Diego
  6. Tony Dorrance (21) 4* RF Elite bat/eye combo 18th overall to Indianapolis
  7. Ken Rybaki (18) 5* C huge power 28th overall to Chicago Hitmen
  8. Brett Housley (21) 5* 2B huge power/eye combo 6th overall to Phoenix
  9. Gerardo Martinez (21) 5* CF Elite bat 10th overall to Detroit
  10. Jesse Halamicek (21) 4* elite bat 25th overall to Chicago Hitmen

IRON PIGS DRAFT
Round/Pick
1/33 Mike Harper (18) RHP 5* 6'2” 190 The arm we had targeted before the draft started. Elite 4 pitch mix with 3-4 MPH left to go. Works 91-93
2/49 Elijah Washington (21) RHP 5* 6'4” 210 did not expect him to be here. Monster talent with enough maturation he'll likely start in AA if/when he signs
2/62 Jake Ray (19) RHP 4* 6'1” 185 legit shot at being a solid #2. Will end up mid to upper 90s if healthy.
3/102 Jamie Bowden (21) LHP 5* 5'10” 185 Came out of San Diego State, works mid 90s now, could start in AAA without a concern, slider already a 20 on scouting boards.
3/103 Larry Hileman (18) 3B RHH 4* IF 6'4” 210 huge raw power, could be a 6 hitter or a 3 if everything breaks right. First position player taken by us
4/136 Bryan Morrison (18) RHP 4.5* 6'2” 190 he hung around for too long. An anamoly in today's game, the HS “pitcher”. Will not overwhelm with velocity but his 3 pitch mix features a potential 19-20 rated change up.
5/168 Bobby Chapman (18) 2B RHP 4* 6' 180 big time bat, no real power but has great hit tools and elite speed.
6/200 Brian Parke (21) RHP 3.5* 6'1” 190 Elite 3 pitch mix who will be ready for A or AA out of the draft.
7/232 Pablo Carcamo (18) LHP 3.5* 6'2” 195 Very good find if he's the player we think. Potential 3 in a good rotation.
8/264 Juan Ybarra (20) RHP 3.5* 5'11” 180 hard throwing righty who can be a potential late inning arm
9/296 David Green (18) RHP 3.5* 5'10” 175 Another hard throwing HS righty with back end potential in an IBL bullpen

We took 10 starting pitchers, 4 relievers, 5 infielders and 3 outfielders total.

IRON PIG NEWS
  • I did not want to lose Dave Pedraza as he's out of options, he'd surely be claimed, but Dames is the everyday SS for now. Calkins is going to be upset about it but them's the breaks. Do I send a reliever down and go with 7 or send Juan Chavez down for a few days to see how things shake out. Losing a player here ends up costing you when 3 days later someone goes down and you need the guy you just lost.
  • The recent run of CG's has me thinking to shorten the pen for a few days (which means we're about to see starters go 3). Recently acquired Aaron Prochaska is sent down.
  • 2nd rounder Elijah Washington signed and will pitch on Tuesday at AA Milwaukee
  • Speaking of Milwaukee, SS Enrique Garza was having a good year in Albuquerque and was moved up 2 weeks ago. In 15 games he's hitting .323/.364/.661 with 7 HR and 15 RBI's.

  • New York signed superstar Kevin Terry to a 5 year 66 million dollar extension. If you were 'watching' the playoffs you may remember NY was up 3-0 and he was on his way to series MVP, he went down they lost 4 straight. Take that “value” to the bargaining table.

NL POTW- SS Justin Ward (IND) 9-23 3 HR 6 RBI

I hate to mention it because the guy is 33 and playing Short-season, but Alejandro Lopez has a 44-game hitting streak for Shady Grove. He was a career .273/.317/399 hitter over his 12 years in the big leagues, including a 2004 All-Star appearance. Now that I DID mention it, the day after the break it ended.

[B]I.

IRON PIG NEWS
  • 'IF Andy Alvarado went 12-29 4 HR 7 RBI to win AA POTW. He's hitting .283-14-50. Andy was a 12th round pick in 2012.
  • Top pick this year Mike Harper dropped to 0-3 4.35 but has thrown well in 2 of the 3 starts. He's tossed 20.2 IP fanned 20 on 21 Hits, however he has walked 14. Our guys had him slotted at A, or AA. He's just 18, why? Let him master rookie league, dominate even. Then we move him.
  • Speaking of, Luis Ornelas might be close to a move up to AAA New Orleans. He starts for Milwaukee today and is 9-3 2.81 in 14 starts over 96 innings with 81 K's and 27 BB, allowing 90 hits. He's 21 in a few months, no need to rush, but if all things break right he may be a candidate for some September innings.
  • The guy in front of him at Milwaukee, Elijah Washington, is off to a strong start. Always concerned about starting an amateur at AA regardless of their pedigree. It's the first level you see true major league talent. He's 2-0 3.71 through 4 starts, 26.2 IP 28 H 27 K 9 BB.
