Dessens with Braves?
I've tried Google, Getty, Trading Card Database, eBay, Worth Point and this thread, and I cannot find a single image of Elmer Dessens with the Braves in 2008 season.
He spent most of the season in Mexico, but I made the naive assumption that by 2008, there weren't that many that slipped through the cracks. Wrong again! |

Elmer Dessens - Braves Uniform
The attached isn't a great photo of Dessens, but perhaps it will suffice until something else comes along. It shows Elmer leaving the mound after Bobby Cox has relieved him of the ball. It's from the Greenville (SC) News of Sept. 1, 2008.

Photo Located Charles Emig 1896 Louisville Colonels
I found one of my most wanted guys, Charles Emig, who lived to 100 years old and pitched one game for the 1896 Louisville Colonels. His photo appeared in the May 1, 1900 Muncie Star Press. A note in the game recap from the previous day confirms it is the same guy as the major leaguer.

Photo Located Alonzo Breitenstein 1883 Philadelphia Phillies
I've located a pretty low quality image of Alonzo Breitenstein, who pitched for the 1883 Philadelphia Phillies.
He was a life long resident of Utica, where he ran a hotel and seems to have been involved in the theatre scene. He went by the shorter "Lon" rather than Alonzo. His photo appeared in the October 21, 1951 Utica Observer Dispatch. |

Woodcut Located Elias Peak 1884 Boston Unions and Philadelphia Keystones
It is always nice to locate a Union Association guy. I've found a woodcut of Elias Peak during his time with Minneapolis in 1887. He was pictured in the February 7, 1887 Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Now if only you could find an image of Jim Holdsworth and a better photo of Dupee Shaw I could die happy. |

Breitenstein apparently went from throwing a baseball for a living to swinging a hammer and working a saw as a stagehand and employing other carpentry skills, which is logical and makes sense. ie: Murry Dickson, (MLB: 1939-1959 except for WWII military service) pitched for two decades in the big leagues and was a carpenter in his off-seasons and after he retired from baseball.

The banner in the photo identifies the year as 1903. The caption under the photo says it happened 48 years ago. Add the two together and the 1951 date of the newspaper in which it was published makes sense.

John Hudek 1994
My way of saying thank you ...
John Hudek made three MLB stops in his final major league season, 1999, beginning the year with the Reds and winding up with the Blue Jays. In between, from April 16 to July 30, he was a member of the Braves. He pitched in 15 games (0-1, 6.48). He was acquired by the Braves for former closer and World Series hero ('95) and goat ('96) Mark Wohlers. Found this in the third edition of the Fan! program and cleaned up the background. Literally the only one I've seen, but I'd expect more are out there to be found. |

Frederick "Dupee" Shaw 1883
The attached woodcut is from the book Baseball's First Stars, a 1996 SABR publication edited by Frederick Ivor-Campbell, Robert Tiermann, and Mark Rucker. I have a hunch that it's an enlargement of the woodcut of Dupee which appeared in the Nov. 10, 1883 issue of the New York Clipper.

Frank Buttery 1872
This photo of the seldom seen 8-game major league pitcher is from a team photo of the 1871 Osceola Base Ball Club of Stratford, Connecticut. The team photo is being auctioned by loveofthegameauctions.com.
