Coming Attractions
As you may have noticed, I'm not posting here any longer, but I did have some news to share.
Unbeknownst to me, Topps moved its negatives archives back to New York and I've been invited to inspect it, get some images scanned, and point out some more attractive photo items that the Vault might put up on eBay. So I've made two trips of a few hours' each and found some White Whales. Obviously I can't post images here but the envelopes will give you a hint of some of what I found and which they expect to sell over the next few months. I can add that besides the likes of Ken Reynolds and Ron Roenicke, images like Ed Farmer (Brewers), Roger Freed (Expos), Cito Gaston (Indians), Roric Harrison (Tigers, Cardinals, Twins), Chuck Hartenstein (Padres), Mike Heath (Rangers), Mike Mendoza (Mets), Aurelio Monteagudo (Phillies), Claude Osteen (Astros, Cardinals), Stu Pederson (Dodgers - Joc's father), Mike Potter (Mariners), Richard Sauget (Sharman Society guy from 1970), Rick Sawyer (Expos), George Scott (Royals), Bob Sprowl (Astros yes, Red Sox no), Tom Walker (Pirates), Jeff Yurak (Brewers) all exist and are now in the to-be-sold pile. Now the bad news: I can also confirm, or re-confirm, what isn't in the files. There's no Mike Caldwell (Reds), Stan Clarke (Royals, Cards), Willie Crawford (Astros), Terry Crowley (Braves), Ivan DeJesus (Yankees), Mike Eden (Braves), Cito Gaston (Pirates), Bill Gogolewski (Indians), Bob Johnson (1977 Braves), Matt Keough (Cubs, Astros, Cards), Jim Kern (Phillies), Mike Kilkenny (Padres), Stan Perzanowski (Twins), Horacio Pina (Phillies), Jamie Quirk (Indians, White Sox), and George Throop (Astros). They might exist - but they are not where they should be. So far I have been unable to even find the files for such noted targets as Dave Coleman (1978 Red Sox), Kerry Dineen (Phillies), Rawly Eastwick (Royals, Cubs), Woody Fryman (1977 Reds) - some of which did exist during my previous research. Lord knows what happened to them. There is a lot of breaking of the alphabetical order and I'm probably only about 60% through a complete inspection so these are not necessarily lost causes. The Vault is a little smaller than when it was moved out 13 or 14 years ago. The photo you see shows a little more than a third of the file cabinets; these include football and basketball. The files seem to be concentrated more narrowly, as if nearly all the images before 1964 and after 1985 have been removed. I hesitate to do this but if you think there's a 1965-85 era possible obscure Topps negative I might not have checked for, list it - but be circumspect here, let's not put a list of 500 here. I'll check back in a few days. In the interim: when you see these pop up on eBay, bid early and often. Last edited by Merkle923; 05-01-2018 at 11:27 PM. |

Looking for negatives in Vault
The two obscure negatives I'm curious about are Chuck Machemehl (Indians) and a football one of Bobby Burnett (Bills, Bengals, Broncos).

Merkle's offer
Hey Merkle,
Thanks for the heads up and I'll try and keep mine to under 50 for possible obscure Topps negatives to look for...lol! Hopefully, for some of these, you'll be able to tell me there is a chance. And yes, I realize there are color images around for some of these players as part of a standard Google search, just not Vault options. I also realize that for some players, say Mike Corkins of SD, pics of them are littered throughout the Vault releases. I just haven't seen them in applicable year unis or at least similar to their teammates' pics from the same Topps year. (or maybe I missed them) ...and thank you Merk! Thanks Merkle
Thanks Merkle, will keep this down to three:
Alfredo Griffin, Indians - he had short stints in three straight seasons with the Tribe but still nothing has surfaced of him in color... he was on one of the three-panel 1979 b&w cards though, so it looks like Topps snapped him at least once. And if the "Gr" files are among those alphabetized, is there a Billy Grabarkewitz in his last stop on the '75 A's? Finally, Steve M. Davis - very image-scarce, three games as a September call-up for the '79 Cubs and was in the Jays organization for a couple years after that. |

Ed Gastfield 1884
Gastfield played his entire major league career in his teens, first appearing with Detroit in 1884 and ending it with Chicago the following year. He is pictured here as a member of the 1886 Oshkosh team and, for comparison, the image currently in the Facepack.

Thanks for being so helpful, Merkle, really important work there in the archives.
I am tempted to ask for "all the 80s guys missing from the UIN list," but that is a little bit much. So I'll try to be somewhat selective here. The years are the years the guys are on the team, not the Topps card years (which follow after). A's: Dave Heaverlo (1981) Angels: Bahnsen (1982), Bob Lacey (1983) Astros: Tim Tolman (1980-1984), Scott Loucks (1981-1985), Mark Ross, Bert Pena (any years) Blue Jays: Charlie Beamon (1981) Cards: Jimmy Sexton, Jeff Doyle (1983) Cubs: Larry Cox (1982) Dodgers: Jerry Grote, Candy Maldonado (1981), Don Crow (1982), Expos: Ron Johnson (1984), Mike O'Berry (1985) Giants: Guy Sularz (1980-81) Mariners: Bud Black (1981), Ron Musselman (1982) Orioles: Paul Hartzell (1980), Ross Grimsley, Don Stanhouse (1982) Padres: Steve Fireovid (1981, 83), Eddie Miller (1984), Ron Roenicke (1984) Pirates: Bernie Carbo (1980), Wayne Nordhagen (1982), Dave Tomlin, Alfonso Pulido, Bob Owchinko, Miguel Dilone (1983) Rangers: Tucker Ashford, Mike Hart, Mike Richardt, Odie Davis, Dennis Lewallyn (1980) Twins: Jay Pettibone (1983) White Sox: Steve Dillard, Jay Loviglio (1982) Yankees: Roger Holt (1980), Jim Lewis (1982) Don't make any special effort, I know you have plenty to do there. Anything at all, no matter what it is, is appreciated. Many thanks again. Last edited by Terry D; 05-04-2018 at 11:23 PM. |

Some Topps Vault Notes
Forgive if these are a little scattershot.
Firstly: a lot of good names to add to the perusing. Thank you. A macro reminder: whatever happened, happened decades ago: Files later than "TE" in the alphabet are really few in number. The missing W's far exceeds the W's who are there. They must've shot Ray Washburn with the '70 Reds, but I never found a file, 14 years ago, nor last week. There was a Don Lock/Red Sox shoot when I first saw the files circa 2004. Will look again and try to get it moved into the "sell" pile. Topps did NOT shoot Lock with the Phillies, nor Frank MacCormack with Detroit. They not only got Dick Davis with the Blue Jays and Dennis Lewallyn with Texas but sold them a few years back, they were posted here, they are reposted below. I've already moved the "other" Steve Barber of the Twins into the "sell" pile. The "other" Bob Gibson exists only with the Brewers. If there's a Roy Foster file, it's not in the cabinets. Topps did not shoot Grote with the Dodgers. Oddly they had an action shot of him with the Royals - no clue where that went. Billy Grabarkewitz was shot with Oakland by the Topps Bay Area ace, Doug McWilliams but a) it's not in the Topps file but b) it IS in McWilliams' collection at the Baseball Hall of Fame library if you want to buy one through them. Ron Roenicke was addressed above: you'll have to live with the 1985 uniform. There is no 1984 shoot. Jerry Manuel is a no-go with Montreal. The entire Rawly Eastwick file is gone. John Flinn, Milwaukee, nuh-uh (though there's a Tippy Martinez with the Brewers). Reggie Baldwin is a yes: put him on the "sell" pile. There was a Ruppert Jones with the Royals, the last time I looked (2005). Topps did a shoot with the late, tragic Dan Thomas but it was "loaned" to Larry Fritsch for the one-year-wonders sets and I don't know that it was returned. There's no Greg Thayer file. Lastly, Alfredo Griffin is looking for a color shot of himself with the Indians, too. THAT file is also AWOL. Last edited by Merkle923; 05-04-2018 at 11:42 PM. |

John J. O'Connell 1891
At age 19, O'Connell debuted with the 1891 Baltimore Orioles and is featured in that uniform in this nice cabinet photo that is currently up for auction on Ebay.

Preliminary Topps Vault Results
I got a lot done there today, found and moved a bunch of stuff we've never seen before into the "sell" pile (caveat: they might not get around to selling that stuff for months, but at least it won't outlast us all by decades all of them spent in a file cabinet).
Also confirmed some things don't exist. There are two Bud Black files and neither has a Mariner shot, only Cleveland, Kansas City, San Francisco. But if you'll look at some of the packets you'll get a flavor of what is in there. Found: BELL, Kevin (A’s); BRADLEY, Scott (White Sox); CHRISTMAS, Steve (Cubs, White Sox); DAVIS, Steve (Blue Jays); DILLARD, Steve (White Sox); DUNNING, Steve (Rangers); ENRIGHT, George (White Sox – red unis); FIREOVID, Steve (Padres, Phillies, Royals, Rangers); FOSTER, Alan (Indians); HOFFMAN, Guy (White Sox); HUNTZ, Steve (Padres – not 1975 but 1977); KNAPP, Chris (White Sox – red unis); LACEY, Bob (Giants); LESLEY, Brad (Reds); LEZCANO, Carlos (Cubs); LITTLE, Jeff (Cardinals); LOCK, Don (Red Sox); LOUCKS, Scott (Astros); MACHEMEHL, Chuck (Indians); MILLER, Eddie (Padres – 1985 only); RICHARDT, Mike (Rangers); TRACY, Jim (Cubs, Astros); WIHTOL, Sandy (Indians); WILEY, Mark (Padres, Blue Jays). And The Bad News
Topps Vault files were examined for these players and teams. Either there's a file folder but the negative doesn't exist ("No") or no file was found ("NF"). There is the possibility that some of the NF's might be in a different location. Still efforting that. (As an FYI: the 1976 White Sox wore 1975 Unis in spring training so there's a group of guys new to Chicago in 1976 who have been found wearing the '75 red uniforms).

Merkle - post visit update
Hey Merkle,
Thanks so much for taking the time and sharing your knowledge. So I wanted to follow up and re-confirm a few players and re-add to your next trip: Fred Scherman - 75 Expos, Stan Papi, Bos 1979, Gary Ryerson, Mil 1973 - any chance? I've also added a few since your recon efforts were so extensive this past trip. LOL! Randy Hundley - Min 1974 Paul Reuschel - Cle 1979 Skip Jutze - Hou 1976 (I found one in the Vault with him and Ed Hermann together - not solo) Jim Longborg - Mil 1972 Johnny Lewis - Stl 1964 Last edited by hobbs11; 05-09-2018 at 05:37 PM. |

Merkle's Grand Vault Adventure
I thank you for providing such a tremendous service, though I do lament the fact that Roy Foster is not going to be found to complete my formidable Indians photo library.
I guess some things are not meant to be. |

Last Brace finds for now
There has been a positive response to my sharing the Brace photos I have acquired in recent weeks. These may be the last ones for a while (who can say?), but these are two I really like, circa 1978:

Jack O'Brien 1899
In his final year in the major leagues, utilityman O'Brien managed to catch lightning in a bottle and capture the very first World Series while playing for the Boston Americans.
