Cards news: July 17 -- Two former All-Stars featured in four-player deal with Rockies
The St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies have completed a four-year trade featuring former All-Star outfielder Lawrence Butler (St. Louis) and two-time Cy Young winner Yuljanyer Herrera (Colorado).
The Cardinals also will receive highly touted minor-league catcher Marco Hutchinson while the Rockies will receive major-league left-hander Yadiel Batista. Signed by the Milwaukee Brewers as an international free agent in 2024, the Rockies acquired Herrera via trade in August 2024. The now-28-year-old broke into the majors in 2025. Since that time, over the parts of eight seasons, the right-handed Herrera has gone 73-44 with four saves and a 3.51 ERA over 191 games/166 starts. His biggest seasons were in 2027 (15-3 with a 2.77 ERA) when he earned the National League Cy Young, 2028 (15-7, 3.19) and 2030 (17-7 3.78). Herrera helped the Rockies win World Series titles in 2027 and 2029. This year has been a bit of a struggle for Herrera, who missed the start of the season following Tommy John surgery in 2031. In 11 starts, he has gone 1-6 with a 4.83 ERA. Herrera is in the final year of a contract which will pay him $29 million this season. The Rockies will pay a portion of that deal. Hutchinson, 24, is the 70th ranked prospect in all of MLB. He got his first chance to play in the majors this season, getting into 16 games/13 starts for the Rockies, during which he hit .200 with one home run and six RBIs. Hutchinson was with AAA Albuquerque at the time of the trade. In 25 games with the Isotopes, Hutchinson has hit .289 with four homers and 15 RBIs. Hutchinson turned pro in 2027 and during his time pro ball has hit .269 with 59 home runs and 257 RBIs in 414 games/404 starts. The right-handed hitter will be assigned to AAA Memphis. Acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Athletics at the trade deadline in 2025, Butler, 32, had some good seasons with St. Louis earning All-Star team berths in 2026 and 2027 and Gold Gloves in right field in 2029 and 2030. His best seasons came in 2026 (batting .259 with 28 homers and 99 RBIs), 2027 (.291, 38 HRs, 102 RBIs) and 2028 (.282, 24 HRs, 75 RBIs). He also exceeded 85 RBIs in both 2030 and 2031. In 959 games/911 starts with St. Louis, Butler hit .266 with 165 home runs and 575 RBIs. Butler has two seasons remaining on a contract which will pay him $23 million. St. Louis will pay half of that over both campaigns. The 28-year-old Batista has bounced back and forth between the starting rotation and bullpen and the majors and AAA Memphis since breaking in with the Cardinals in 2029. This season, Batista was in the rotation at the time of the trade. In 14 games/three starts he has gone 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA. Overall, he owns a record of 12-10 with three saves and a 4.54 ERA in 106 games/27 starts. |
