1986 Oshkosh Team Photo
Cinemaodyssey and myself have been engaged in an analysis of players depicted in the 1886 team photo. During the process he contacted the source of the image to try and establish details of the players and officials depicted. Some sketchy information was provided. We have now come to what we believe to be the end of the analysis process. Below are the names we believe to be accurate. Any input from contributors would be welcome either in confirming the results of our research or putting forward alternative suggestions.
A number of the identifications will result in upgrades to the images we previously have for those players so validation will be greatly appreciated. All the players identified are Major Leaguers except Pope Top (l-r) Dummy Hoy, Charlie Hallstrom, George Harper, Walt Kinzie, Jim Burns, Charlie Pope Middle (l-r) Billy Harrington, Charlie Chase Bottom (l-r) Ed Gastfield, Gus Krock, George Rooks, Wash Williams, Charlie Ingraham Last edited by UKBaseballfan; 07-03-2019 at 04:46 AM. |

Frank Diven 1883
Referring to post 31857 one of Chickazoola's magnificent finds.
Attached is a larger version of the 1886 Scranton team photo which was the source image. Two previously missing players Pat Callghan and Diven were discovered, extracted and higlighted. Diven is standing on the top row, third from left. Extract also attached. Unfortunately in the original post 31857 it was the player seated left on the second row who was extracted as Diven by mistake, Charles Helfer. Finally, attached is the original version of the team photo including the identifications. Last edited by UKBaseballfan; 07-03-2019 at 04:46 AM. |

Tony Castillo - 1978
Up for bid at the TV are two images of Tony Castillo, he of a 5 game ML career with the Padres in 1978. It's the first image of him I've seen wearing the 1978-only version of the Padres uniform.

What's Wrong With This Picture?
This, of course, is the man who hit the Shot Heard 'Round the World, Giants playoff hero Bobby Thomson. But if something doesn't look quite right about it, you'd be correct. He's wearing a San Francisco Giants cap. Thomson, who was initially traded by the Giants in 1954 -- three years after his historic homer -- was a Milwaukee Brave in the interim. HIs most notable achievement there was breaking his leg at such a time that young Henry was called up to take his place. But he was dealt back to the Giants in June of 1957 in a deal for Red Schoendienst as the Braves wanted the future Hall of Fame manager for their ultimately successful pennant race. He played in 81 games with the '57 Giants and was seemingly on board for their dramatic departure for San Francisco. Thomson indeed spent spring training with the Giants in '58, but then was dealt to the Cubs on April 3rd and never played for San Francisco. This is what I like to call a "Phantom." |

Tom Chism
Another offering from the TV on eBay - Tom Chism of the 1979 Orioles. First color and/or undoctored image I've seen of him in O's garb.

Luis Pujols 1977
You know what else is in that '85 Rangers yearbook?
A shot of future Tigers manager Luis Pujols, whose playing career ended with one and only one game (and one at bat, and one hit) in the uniform of the Rangers, on May 22 1985: |

Tommy Boggs 1976
Here are those Boggs images - in his own swan song that was over by the beginning of May - with the '85 Rangers, cleaned up:

Fred Patek 1968
But this is the best player photo in that '85 Texas yearbook...
The Pirates, Royals, and Angels miniature shortstop Freddie Patek - as a Rangers' TV announcer. With a beard. |

John Peltz 1884
If anyone wanted a non-woodcut image of Peltz, here he is pictured with the 1888 Memphis Grays. Although not an ideal image, it is nonetheless a genuine photograph of him.

Fred Holdsworth - Brewers
It looks like an image of Holdsworth with Milwaukee was previously posted, then deleted, by Merkle. Anything else out there of Holdsworth with the Brewers?
Thanks! |

A bit of trivia...
Cline was on the '59 Pan Am Games squad that took Bronze in Chicago (games played at Wrigley and Comiskey). One of his Pan Am teammates later played in Wrigley for the Cubs and is now in the HOF. Another teammate was an Olympic gold medalist. |

Bob Uhl
Uhl's Major League career pitching career consisted of 2 seasons. In 1938 he was with the White Sox and 1940 with the Tigers. Here are 2 representative images of that career.
