I'm not going to lie, getting a non-woodcut image of Shaw was high on my bucket list. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Dupee Shaw 1883
In addition to the woodcut, here left, and the clear images depicted above we also have this image, right, of Shaw extracted from the 1887 Washington team photo.

Rudy Baerwald 1907
Initial reaction of most may well be Who???
Baerwald is the name now used by Baseball Reference as the player commonly referred to as Rudy Bell, a player whose Major League career amounted to a stint with the 1907 New York Highlanders. Attached, left, is the existing facepack image of him, as Bell, in street clothes. An alternative may be the Colgan image of him with the Memphis Chicks. George Gilham 1920
Facepack upgrade for Gilham, who had 4 at bats in 2 games for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1920 and 1921. Ebay seller zubes1156 has the original up for auction if you care to own it.

Al Atkinson 1884
BMarlowe, in the most recent SABR Pictorial History newsletter, has come to the conclusion that Al Atkinson is likely pictured in the 1884 Philadelphia Athletics team image. I had pointed out the facial similarities and UKBaseball fan also assisted. This is a great Facepack upgrade, as the previous image we had of Atkinson was as a 90-year old man.

Charlie Hickman 1897
Here is another example of Hickman in a New York Giants uniform, I am unable to provide a date for this image, however, it matches the HOF uniform database for either 1900 or 1901.

Hey, how confident are you on the MLB information for Jerald Jake Brown? I'd like to know anything outside of the health and sexual orientation speculation. I need solid info only.

Charlie Hickman 1897
Quote:
Firstly there is no record that Hickman even played for New York in 1905. Secondly the uniform does not match either the home or away uniform in the HOF database for New York in 1905, see attached, (right). Thirdly the uniform does match the uniform in the HOF database for New York in 1900 or 1901, specifically the road uniform, so it is highly likely the uniform was for one of those years when Hickman was playing for the New York Giants, see attached (left). Fourthly Hickman after his stint in New York joined Boston at the start of the 1902 season so it is reasonable to speculate that the Globe posted their image on the news of this acquisition in spring training, in advance of his first appearance in a Boston uniform, showing the player in his most recent team colors. Bill Phyle 1898
Shown with St. Paul Saints from team photo published in the st. Paul Globe of April 24, 1898. Contrast this with the photo of Phyle which tnfoto posted back in 2010 (link to page shown below). Phyle seems to have aged considerably in the one year between when the two photos with St. Paul were taken.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=arroyo002car P.S. When Arroyo left the White Sox, the Chicago Tribune of March 31, 1981 reported: "Carlos Arroyo, who had been conditionally purchased from the Phils, was returned to Philadelphia's Oklahoma City farm club." So it seems that it was a conditional purchase instead of a Rule V draft situation. Yet the transaction came via the draft. The Wilmington (DE) News Journal of Dec. 9, 1980 indicated: "The annual draft of minor-league players kicked off the winter meetings in the morning and the Phils found themselves losing four prospects from their Oklahoma City roster. ....The Chicago White Sox chose pitcher Carlos Arroyo...." By the way, the reason that Topps Vault shows Arroyo in a Phillie uniform is probably because he was a non-roster invitee with the Phils in their spring camp in 1980. Photo Located Ed Forsyth 1915 Baltimore Terrapins
After a dry stretch, I've found another missing player photo. Ed Forsythe, who played one game for the Baltimore Terrapins in 1915, was longtime Hoboken policeman. His somewhat blurry photo is featured with his obituary in the June 25, 1956 Jersey Journal. With this image, we now have images of every single Federal Leaguer.
Since I am not one for photo ID's, perhaps soneone here would like to take a crack at locating Forsythe in this photo which was provided by a family member and is in his Hall of Fame Player File. |
