Dow
Just received a note from John Thorn. One of you must have gotten to him, as he is now questioning whether the photo is Clarence or H.G. It may not be a find after all. I assume more to follow.
P.S. Received a second note from John. He did some newspaper searching and found an obit for Clarence Dow which confirmed that Clarence did not attend college. Accordingly, John is now concluding that the photo is not of Clarence Dow. Last edited by Cusick; 07-15-2019 at 05:01 PM. Reason: Add P.S. |

Subby Sisti
I came across a James T. Elder postcard of infielder Subby Sisti, pictured in a Phillies uniform. He is pictured in a 1950 onward, red pinstripes Phillies uniform. Sisti played in a little over 1,000 major league games between 1939 and 1954, The 2019 Phillies Media Guide shows that Sisti never played or coached for the Phillies. I'm thinking that he may have had a trial with the Phils during Spring Training one year near the end of his career, but I've found no documentation of this. Does anyone have any info about Sisti, possibly having an unsuccessful Spring Fling with the Phillies in Clearwater, FL one year?

I can't believe I mis-typed his first name or his nickname, Sibby - getting it wrong both in the title and in the body of the post. Sibby was Another player, who while he wasn't destined for greatness, certainly may have never reached his full potential with a long playing career interruption, as he gave three years to the military in their effort to win World War Two. You have to say that he was at the very least, a brave patriot. He had a few years with the Boston Braves where he had enough at bats to be considered an everyday or regular player before entering the service and only one such year, 1951, afterwards. He was already thoroughly enmeshed in his substitute role by 1948, when he appeared in only two games for the Braves and got only one at-bat in the 6-Game, 1948 World Series and he was gone from the major league scene by June of 1954.. |

Bobby Abreu was a 2019 Spring Training Instructor with the Phillies and he is not listed as a coach either. By the way Abreu is going to have his big day on August 3rd when he is officially added to the Phillies Wall Of Fame in a CEREMONY before the Phillies game vs. the Chicago White Sox at Citizens Bank Park. When I look back a the list of 12 candidates who were up for the honor this March, Abreu definitely had the best career and was the best choice. |

In 5 years of being on this thread, I've tried to avoid outburst, but I'm really getting tired of trying to help people making requests when they are not clear or even misleading about what they want. You said B&W photos, Mr. Terrific, would work. I led you to two B&W photos. Now you say you want Topps images. I led you to a Topps baseball card. You don't bother to say thanks. I'm fed up.

Woodcut Located Joe Burke 1890 St. Louis Browns + 1891 Cincinnati
I was able to locate a woodcut of Joe Burke, who played in 1890/91 in the American Association. Burke's woodcut was featured in the May 26, 1893 Nashville Tennessean during his time with the Nashville Tigers.

William McCauley update 1895 Washington
An update to an old find, I believe, the previous photo I found of William McCauley, may have been incorrect.
I found a baseball photo of William McCauley in the June 21, 1905 Washington Times and another one in the July 16, 1905 Washington Evening Star. MCauley was a long time player in the DC area departmental leagues and worked as an engraver for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which was part of the Treasury. McCauley was a pitcher and infielder for the Treasury club in 1905. Last edited by Chickazoola; 07-18-2019 at 10:44 AM. |
