Bert Cole 1921
Don't know whether you'll like this one, but it's a 1924 Diaz Cigarette Cuban baseball card of Cole as published in THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BASEBALL CARDS, by Lew Lipset, 1987.

Ben Flowers - '56 Phillies
Would anyone have a photo to share with this forum of Bennett 'Ben' Flowers, while he was with the 1956 Phillies?

Rabbit Benton 1922
Pictured with the 1932 Beaumont Exporters. Albeit far removed from his six games of major league experience, a much sharper image than that currently in the Facepack or on Benton's baseball-reference.com page.

After finishing the 1955 season and beginning he 1956 season with the St. Louis Cardinals things get pretty interesting. 5/11/1956: Flowers is traded by the Cardinals to the Phillies with pitchers Harvey Haddix and Stu Miller for pitchers Murry Dickson and Herman Wehmeier. After working 32 games in relief with an uncreditable 5.71 e.r.a. Flowers pitched in what is to be his final MLB game on 9/21/1956 at the age of 29. 10/15/1956: 5 days after the Yankees win Game 7 of the World Series over the Brooklyn Dodgers, Flowers is purchased from the Phillies by the Kansas City Athletics. 4/1/1957: Flowers is unceremoniously returned to the Phillies by the Athletics. 4/8/1957: In a move just prior to Opening Day, Flowers is traded by the Phillies along with Elmer Valo and Ron Negray, plus minor leaguers Melvin Gaho and Tim Harkness (later a L.A. Dodger & a NY Met) to the Brooklyn Dodgers, plus $75,000 for shortstop Chico Fernandez. 5/24/1957: The Brooklyn Dodgers trade Flowers to the NY Yankees for Jim Fridley. Without ever returning to the big leagues, Ben Flowers works as a Yankees farmhand at their AAA clubs for four seasons before retiring (1957-1960.) He pitched for all three minor leagues that at that time were designated as AAA level leagues. In those years he pitched for Richmond (International League), Los Angeles (Pacific Coast league) in 1957 the year before Los Angeles became a big league city and Denver in the now defunct American Association. PS: The area of North Carolina where Flowers was born, grew up, lived and died is famous as the birthplace of screen actress, Ava Gardner. Flowers is buried not far from the burial place of Ms. Gardner and not far from the Ava Gardner museum, which commemorates the actress' career.. I'll say one good thing about Ben Flowers.
One great thing about Ben Flowers, who is shown on this page (1671), section 33412. He has a great autograph signature. Nice stylish, with big letters and highly legible. Today's players could have taken a lesson from him with their hurried squiggles and incomplete lettering (sometimes little more than initials).

Earl Huckleberry 1935
It's not a new find, just a cleaner copy, of this unique player whom the A's signed off the Oklahoma sandlots in 1935. Brought east by scout and former catcher Ira Thomas to start against the White Sox at Shibe Park on Friday the 13th of September, he gave up seven runs but his teammates scored 19 and he got credit for the victory. The September 18, 1935 Akron Beacon Journal reported that Huckleberry was to start the second game of that day's doubleheader against Cleveland, but without explanation the A's went with George Caster instead.
So Huckleberry's first start was not just his only major league appearance, but also his only professional one. There's no indication he even went to Spring Training in 1936, and by April '36 he's found starting for a Shawnee, Oklahoma semi-pro club against Oklahoma City of the Texas League. Pitched one game. For the A's. Not a day in the minors, before or after. The shot of Huckleberry with the A's is from the 9/14/35 Philadelphia Inquirer and the grainier one, from the Daily Oklahoman of 8/15/35. The Philly picture has been seen before, but never this clear. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-08-2019 at 12:46 AM. |

More Huckleberry
Not everything gets thrown away. Turns out the original of the crudely-outlined photo of Huckleberry (right) from The Oklahoman was in an Oklahoma historical site:
