Hiding in Plain Sight
In the 1908 Red Sox team photo published in the 1909 Spalding Guide, catcher Harry Ostdiek appears at right end of the bottom row - the first time I've ever seen an image of Ostdiek in a Sox uniform.

Hiding in Plain Sight - II
The Sox' 1911 team photo was posted a while back in response to my request for images of Hy Gunning and Joe Giannini. After looking at it again, I believe I've spotted 2-game pitcher Blaine Thomas, third from left in the back row. He didn't play until August, but the presence of Gunning and Giannini who also didn't make their debuts until that month tells me this must have been taken later in the year, and therefore could accommodate an appearance by the elusive Thomas. The only other "Thomas" from that time frame was Pinch Thomas, and he didn't play until 1912, and from images I have of him he doesn't look like the man in this image.

Charlie Ripple
Here's Ripple in a 1946 uniform... his last major league appearance came on June 28, 1946 vs. the New York Giants at Shibe Park. Note the date on the reverse blurb - June 29, 1946.

Charlie Brewster 1943
This is a much better image of Brewster as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies than I had previously.

Missing Red Sox

This nice color of Roland Sheldon I plucked off Bob Wong's blog five years ago. The Ed Phillips, I believe, is a Brace. |

Hack Eibel
That's an interesting shot of Eibel which baseball-birthdays posted. I'd guess that's a first baseman's glove, despite its resemblance to a catcher's mitt. Eibel only played first base in one major league game during his 30-game career, but the back of the photo identifies him as an infielder. Furthermore, the fuzzy figure in the background suggests that it may be an outfielder farther out towards the fence behind him.

Larry Drake 1945
Don't think that Larry Drake has been seen in a Washington Senators uniform previously. This is from the Charlotte (NC) News of March 17, 1948. The other hands on the bat belonged to outfielder Dean Stafford, who was also on the Senators' spring roster that year. Unlike Drake, Stafford never played in a regular season major league game.

Red Kelly 1910
Here's another option for Kelly, pictured with the 1910 University of Notre Dame team.
The Baseball Reference image does not actually depict Kelly. |
