GM'S OFFICE Ernesto Cortezo stopped in for a visit. It was short and sweet. He would like to play out his career here. He's 29, and off to a great start, and making 3.88 million in the final year of his deal. He's likely to get upwards of 5-6 million annually on the market and if that's the asking price I am likely going to take the compensation pick. I am going to see if I can get this done though. He's a big part of this franchise on and off the field.

TARPONS, CORTEZO AGREE ON EXTENSION
The Florida Tarpons have come to terms with 1B Guiomar Cortezo on a 6 year 25.02 Million dollar contract extension that will keep the slugger in Miami through 2016. The former NL MVP will make 4.170 annually for the next 6 seasons. Since coming from LA Cortezo has hit .293/.374/.475 in 329 games with 39 HR and 179 RBI's. He's off to a torrid start leading the American League with a .384 batting average through today. Over his 6+ year career, the righty is a .302 hitter with 144 HRs and 592 RBI's. GM'S OFFICE Given he's making 3.88 this year this is a fantastic contract for a great player. He hasn't hit nearly as much as I thought he might but he's still been an anchor and a horse. He'll play every day if I let him and he's getting better defensively. In 25 games this year he's struck out just 6 times to 19 bases on balls for a .487 OBP. That's a 37 K 118 BB pace.

Finish the month on a 10-0 run to move 6 up on Minnesota. The offense is tearing it up. That's with a slumping Flores (.215-1-8) and Bursey just starting to heat up. Our defense is a concern ranking near the bottom of the AL all month long. Sugihara is due back shortly. TARPONS MONTH

Week 5 recap
SCHEDULE:
1 @ Phoenix 3 @ Chicago 3 vs Denver RESULTS
GM's OFFICE 2 things happened today. First, the player pool report was sent in by our scouts for next months draft and we have begun scouting our potential list. Second, Ernesto Galindo has asked, personally, to work on a contract extension. It has nothing to do with 'want' I don't think, and everything to do with 'can'. Right now our 2011 payroll is 37.1 million and that is without Hayashi, Sugihara, Galindo, Turner and Grab signed. That's pretty much the entire back end of our pen, a young starter I desperately want to retain and an LF who, if I can get a club-friendly deal I have interest in bringing back. Hayashi is making 3.5 and looking for 4-5 years at 4-4.5. If I can swing a multi-year deal under 4 AAV I think it's doable., Sugihara is making 2.415 and looking for 2-3 years at 3m. I've actually moved it along at around 3.0 AAV for 6 years. He's 25 and he is going to be a stud. That is a fantastic price. I would love to work on that 6th as a club option too. Turner is an issue. He's making 1m this year and wants 4-5 years at an AAV around 3. I think the only way I can do this is if he's closing, which he could do. If I can manage an AAV closer to 2.5 it's possible. Grab has declined enough that I am going to let him walk. I have more than enough arms to fill that spot and at 29 I am not paying big dollars to a middleman. Having said all that, if I can manage ALL of those deals close to my desired numbers it would still leave me far north of where I want this payroll. But I think every one of those contracts is imminently trade-able if it comes to that.
TARPONS EXTEND HAYASHI The Florida Tarpons today announced the signing of 25 year old outfielder Makata Hayashi to a 5 year 19 million dollar contract extension. Hayashi celebrated by going 4-5 in their 9-5 loss to Denver. The slugger has been a Tarpon since he entered the ABA as a free agent from Japan in 2006. He's hit just 59 home runs the past 4 seasons after a 2006 Rookie of the Year Campaign in which he hit 45 HR and drove in 132 runs. GM'S OFFICE I got the AAV of under 4 I was looking for. He needs to improve defensively but it feels like the bat may be coming around. He's still a liability in left but the combination of offensive upside and age (25) make this a pretty easy deal to accept.

TARPONS EXTEND SUGIHARA, 6 YEARS 18 MILLION 25 year old Yasushi Sugihara has agreed to terms on a 6 year 18 million dollar extension with the Florida Tarpons. The 3 million dollar 6th year is a club option. Both parties wanted to make this happen as many in the Florida camp believe the youngster is on the verge of becoming one of the game's elite. GM'S OFFICE This is most certainly a contract paying out for what he WILL do and not really what he HAS done. He's just turned 25 and if our scouts are right he's a soon to be ace. He makes his final AAA rehab start tomorrow.
STAR RELIEVER SIGNS EXTENSION WITH FLORIDA 28-year-old 2 time Gossage Award winner Brad Turner has agreed to terms on a 5 year 12.34 million dollar contract extension with the Florida Tarpons. Tarpons GM Gehrig Schilling said “This was something we felt very strongly about since the day Brad let it be known he wanted to stay. These 2.5 years he's become what we believe is the games most dominant reliever and we look forward to many more years of that type of performance” GM'S OFFICE The contract calls for base salaries of 1.9, 2.2, 2.5, 2.8 and 3 million annually. He'll be 33 when the deal comes up and we felt it was a deal worth 'risking' for a guy who is likely to be our closer if we do not manage to get Galindo under any sort of extension.

ROADRUNNERS FIRE TANAKA, TARDE SPRUILL 47 games was all GM Darrell Woodard had to see. The 16-31 Phoenx Roadrunners fired manager Kohei Tanaka today and within an hour of that firing annoucned they'd traded 25 year old SP Zeke Spruill and a minor leaguer to San Francisco for Canadian P prospect Maddox Poliskin. Spruill was 12-14 5.53 last season and 4-4 5.13 for a dismal Phoenix club this year. Woodard was mum on word of a replacement for Tanaka.

June Recap
TARPONS MONTH
ST LOUIS PUTS UP “YARD SALE” SIGN The St Louis Surge have made it known that their ABA worst 23-59 record has put them in “Fire Sale” mode. Owner Luis Crespin has “demanded” a change and 'fix' by Surge GM Brett Creamer. Sources around the league point to a decent pool of young talent that has been developing around their only true star in 3B Ben Chase. Chase has become the 'face of the franchise' for whatever that may be worth, while he is hitting a career-low .248 he still leads the ABA in home runs with 26. The Surge has also been hard hit by injuries. They rank dead last in runs scored, Avg, OBP, runs against and 13th in Starters ERA and defensive efficiency. Most speculate the Surge will move any and every prospect they have for the right deal which is said to be "prospects and picks". They are apparently 'starting over' and looking to re-stock a system. Chase is one of the few names overheard to be 'untouchable' but some scouts have said Chase is the one player that could get them a return that would jump-start the rebuild stating "if they can be dead last WITH him what's the harm in being dead last without him, and a bunch of young talent coming back their way?". It is also no secret that a few GM's around the ABA have coveted Chase since draft day and may actually be willing to part with the 'package' that could get it done.

SURGE STUN ABA, TRADE CHASE TO FLORIDA
Florida Tarpon GM Gehrig Schilling today announced his club had acquired the rights to star 3B Ben Chase from the St Louis Surge. Florida sent two-way star 3B/SP Arturo Mendoza, their top-ranked prospect in 3B Theo Lemaire, minor league P prospect Jimmy Hall and their 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft to St Louis in exchange for the 26-year-old Chase. Many were shocked to see Florida dealing Mendoza who most feel is maturing into what may end up the best 2-way talent in ABA history and their top prospect. St Louis will also pay the remainder of Chase's 2010 salary. GM'S OFFICE Ben Chase is going to be a Hall of Famer. He's also about 270 days younger than Arturo Mendoza. He's 26, just turned, a gold glove silver slugger candidate every year. He's insanely popular league-wide and a hard worker and great teammate. The two players I dealt are both pure 3B when Mendoza is not pitching. It was a price I could “afford” as Alatorre comes off his rehab to take the rotation spot and Chase becomes the teams every day third basemen. The P “prospect” was a 25-year-old minor league FA who we may have 'hit on' but given our top 3 prospects are SP and at AAA we can manage. The only hiccup? I will not be able to re-sign Galindo, Allen or Grab. This is going to force some moves this winter from a payroll perspective but I think we have enough young talent to do that and not miss a beat. I also think this move puts the Florida Tarpons in full-blown dynasty mode.
