1980 spring training
Don Baylor suddenly can't play 1B. He's now corner OF only. Last year's rating at 1B was 10 (20 scale). In ST it collapsed to 2. I'm heavy on corner OF and Art Howe isn't a strong enough hitter to put at 1B. Traded Baylor for Dan Driessen. Lee Lacy's 2B rating dropped to 2. Roster has 7 OF and 5 IF (plus Driessen who is 1B only). These are significant events but are an OOTP issue. There is no plausible real life reason for players to lose so much ability while retaining it for other positions, especially for Baylor. 1B is the last position a player should be able to play. Due to lack of a plausible real life explanation for these events there will not be a season opening news story.

1980 Division title secured September 29.
2B Willie Randolph will miss the post season. IF Darrel Thomas is back on he active roster after missing four months RF Dave Parker will miss the first game of the post season due to a hand injury. Won the first game of the NL Pennant Series vs the Dodgers then lost the next three. Number one in NL on attendance 3.3m. LA second at 3.0m, Atlanta third at 2.6m. Still no market size increase. Months ago Pelican observed that the NL was very competitive in the 60s with the idea that becoming America's Team during this era would be difficult.
Looking at the current situation where I consistently lead MLB in attendance but have to keep ticket prices at average and have not gotten a market size increase I think the window to become America's Team is mostly closed. Maybe completely. I don't know how market size increase works but clearly leading in attendance with average ticket prices doesn't get it. A bigger market seems essential to being able to lead in attendance with high ticket prices. I'm considering calling an end to this save in a couple years as it appears a 60s dynasty is needed to become America's Team.

Terrible year with lots of injuries. Montreal turned it on late August and ran away from the rest of the division.
Sandy Koufax elected to HOF. Plaque says as a Pirate. He played 9 years for the Dodgers, 7 at the beginning of his career and 2 at the end. But he had higher WAR in only 5 years as a Buc, 38.7 to 16.8. Somehow the Pirates led the MLB in attendance again, 2.977m, 200k more than LA. Steve Carlton won the Cy. 15-8 with 2.68 ERA.
