In addition to all the other team woes, our own lumbering first sacker is regressing back to the mean defensively. It's hardly been noticed over the other aspects of the team that are in absolute free fall.

It would help if we could take Rafael Devers around with us, to provide useful contrast. Although I did enjoy that one ball where Rafa just kept knocking it towards the bag until he managed to pick it up and step on the bag, probably surprising himself as much as anyone else.

The ESPn pregame reports that the Mets might be in the market for a front of the rotation starter, someone who can give them some innings. Among the names mentioned is…Seth Lugo. You know, the same Lugo who was considered a 6-inning pitcher during his previous time with the Mets.
Of course, nowadays six innings is considered a "workhorse"…sigh. (The Rangers are only 55-50. Maybe they should think about moving that big-salaried "de Grom" guy? I hear he's kind of good… [10-2, 2.22, 0.90 WHIP. Have I said "**** you, Eppler!!" recently?]) |

Lucky me woke up just in time to see Gregory Soto - aka "Soto the Lesser" - **** up a game to the Padres.
Good times.

Ah, then you missed seeing "MOAN"-tass **** up his chance at his first-ever four-game win streak by not being able to pitch with a 4-run lead (wasting GG Swaggy V's second bomb of the night) and Bra's Open failing to cover 1B (I feel he's done that before) and costing us the other half of that lead. Lucky you indeed.
I hate to bash a guy who has now hit consecutive late-inning game-tying dingers…but Ronnie Mauricio having hit 6 HRs on the year and having driven in all of 9 runs makes me think he hasn't been quite as clutch as we'd like to think. At some point being able to drive in a baserunner might be helpful, too. |

Show me a guy on this team that can drive in runners on second and third with less than two outs, and I'll bake you a cake and deliver it in person.

I see that you got our old closer Gregory Soto! He sure can hump a fastball - does he know where it's going these days?

Last night was MLBN's "showcase" game, which I knew wasn't going to go very well when Yonder Alonso mixed up Dylan "My Career Is About To" Cease's W-L record (3-10) and ERA (4.59).
Still, I have to give props to Matt Vasgersian for basically noping out of the broadcast the moment they got news of Ryne Sandberg's passing, and putting all his energy into conducting an interview with Bob Costas about "The Sandberg Game" and everything it meant to Bob to call it, and his enduring friendship with Ryno because of it. Honestly, Costas seemed more interested in calling the action (including Blastin' Brett Baty's sac fly that gave us the early lead) than Matty Vas did. Old habits die hard. (I hate calling Costas old…he still has a hint of youth, even in his 70s.) No "Showcase" tonight, so I was hoping for GKR…but I have to settle for Don Orsillo and Mudcat Mark Grant instead. They're probably my #3 favorite NL crew, though (Kruk and Kuip being the obvious #2), so it's not so bad. Except for the Mets falling behind early, that is. |

Report:
Mets acquire the Rogers guy from the Giants for Butt-Oh, Tlade Bidwell, and the Tennessee power tool. Sounds like desperation.

Remember: Wilmer never got to the hugs stage while totally being traded to the Brewers.

Butto, Butthole and Blade will be missed…to varying degrees. Rogers can be a useful reliever, but the question is whether a useful reliever is enough.
Also being missed is the Mets' offense, which can barely touch a Yu Darvish who'd been spun around like a whirling dervish his past four starts. Clay Holmes tossing like a clay pigeon ain't helping, either. |

Clay Holmes is absolutely useless at this point. Maybe try *him* in relief. They gotta have starting pitchers in Syracuse, right?
Right?

Shoulda traded for Yu Darvish, who is now the sole leader in combined wins for Japanese players that went to MLB (204).
Always liked Yu Darvish. He looks so ... "exotic"? Nothing to like about those Mets. Not worth staying up for. Or for telling yourself "go play a week of Raccoons alongside, it'll be fun". No, it wasn't, and I am not even through the week yet. When you're spot starter is the only guy with an RBI in a 3-game span, it's getting a bit too Mets...... ![]()

Meanwhile, the Phillies acquire Jhoan Duran, just to keep us on our toes.
Is this the first time all season that MLBN has given me an entire series to watch? Possibly. Gee…thanks. |

Per MLBN…

Oh, and Joel Sherman says "yeah, yeah, the defensive metrics say he sucks, and he has a weak arm, but he's way better in CF than McNeil, trust me". Joel Sherman can lick my unwashed bunghole. Don't dump on Super Squirrel that way! |

Wouldn't want him around the expensive china any more than around a 2-1 lead.
