Francisco Obregon
Obregon was a player with several nicknames -- Frank, Chico, and Teodoro. His highest level accomplishment was making it onto the Cincinnati Reds' spring roster in 1962.
The image on the left is from his 1960 Union Oil Seattle Rainiers baseball card. The image on the right appeared on eBay in 2013, and shows him with the 1974 Lara Cardenales of Venezuela. P.S. I've added a photo (not very good) of Obregon in a Cincinnati Reds' uniform. It's from the Tampa Tribune of March 4, 1962. Last edited by Cusick; 06-19-2020 at 03:05 PM. Reason: Add P.S. |

Steve Kuczek
Kuczek was a shortstop who hit 1.000 for the 1949 Boston Braves. In his only at bat he hit a double off Don Newcombe. Here is Steve Kuczek in the uniform of the '49 Pawtucket Slaters. According to a brief search a Slater is a roofer specializing in slate roofing.

Tripp Cromer
Here is another member of the Cromer baseball family. Roy Bunyan Cromer III , better known as Tripp was for a season the Cardinals everyday shortstop filling in for an injured 39 year old Ozzie Smith in 1994. A Cardinal fan, I watched Cromer hit some early homeruns only to become a frustrating 165 lb pull hitter. He was a scrappy AAA shortstop worth rooting for. Here is Tripp Cromer in his Louisville Redbirds uniform. A team he played for in 1992 to '94 and 1996. He would have another more successful stretch filling in at second and short for the '97 Dodgers with 4 HR and 20 RBI's in 28 games.

Major Swindler
Can anyone find a minor league photo of this player? Baseball Reference has this player listed as Sylvester M. Swindler but at Louisiana-Lafayette and for 4 subsequent years in the Rangers organization he played under his middle name Major. A left handed hitting southpaw outfielder , Major Swindler hit .285 in 252 games. He had little power and struck out too often but he had good speed with a propensity for drawing walks. I have uploaded an image of the Major when he was a Ragin' Cajun' where he had an outstanding college career in Lafayette. This photo to be of Swindler on a college All Star team with USA on the front of his jersey. The S , I assume represents Division South.

Major Swindler
Actually, PinsonHOF, your photo has Swindler in his college uniform -- the University of Southwestern Louisiana. The photo below on the left shows the same uniform straight on, with the same #5 uniform number on it. This photo is from the Lafayette (LA) Daily Advertiser of May 6, 1970.
The photo on the right shows Swindler with the Pittsfield Rangers minor league team. It's for sale on eBay by Historic Images. Found some minutes of a meeting of the School Board of Pointe Coupee Parish which met in New Roads, LA, in December of 2009. That's the town in which Swindler was born. Included in the minutes was an expression of sympathy to Sylvester Major Swindler for the passing of his mother. The minutes mentioned that he was the principal of the Valverda Elementary School. That school is located in Maringouin, LA, which is about 20 miles from New Roads. It seems that after his baseball career was over, he didn't stray far from his original home. Bert Cueto
Dagoberto Concepcion Cueto briefly made it to the show for a brief 4 weeks with the '61 Washington Senators, where Cueto pitched in more games 7 than he had strikeouts 5. Here is Berto Cueto as he known here in the uniform of the 1958 Missoula Timberjacks.

1959 Louisville Colonels
Here is a photo of future major league veterans Claude Raymond, and the Canadian born duo of Ron Piche and Georges Miranda. Miranda had his best minor league season that year with an 18-6 record and 2.48 earned run average but alas he would have the shortest and most insignificant big league career of the three. Louisville was a AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Braves at the time. Despite Miranda brilliant season they did not call him up in September. He would later pitch in two separate seasons for the Giants and Twins. Georges Miranda had a minor league record of 110-78 and hit 10 home runs. Piche hurled for the Braves, Cardinals and Angels. Claude Raymond had a meandering 12 year major league career beginning with the '59 White Sox and ending with the youthful Montreal Expos in 1971 with stops in Milwaukee, Houston and Atlanta in between.

Forgotten phenom
Dale Hendrickson was a Nebraska born lefthander who pitched in the Milwaukee Braves organization from 1955 to 1961. His best year was his first. At 18 years of age Hendrickson hurled 243 innings for the Lawton Braves of the Class D Sooner State league. He won 21 and lost 8 with a miniscule 1.26 ERA giving up only 4 home runs in those 243 innings of work. The following year of 1956 Dale Hendrickson went 11-2 but managed to pitch in only 25 games. It appears arm problems slowly ended his promise despite several years of perseverance.

Ray Dandridge
Since he never reached the actual majors, thought this would be the place to ask; the HOF third baseman was with the Giants' Class AAA club from 1949-52; did he spend any of those springs in the MLB camp -- i.e. get shot in a NYG hat/jersey?

Ray Dandridge
With the kind of hitting he displayed with the Minneapolis Millers, Ray Dandridge should have been invited to the New York Giants' spring camp one of those years, but he wasn't.

Jose Calero
Calero, a native of Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, is pictured here swinging the bat for the Louisville Colonels where he played first and third from 1968 to 1971. At the time Louisville was the AAA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Calero hit .291 in 514 AAA games but never warranted a call up with the big league club. He began his professional career with the Yankees D ball club in Kearney in 1959, Nebraska and also played in the Giants and Twins organizations finishing up in the Mexican league in 1975. It looks like Jose Calero was a reliable batsman with occasional power and a below average fielder looking at his defensive stats and many positions. This is the only image I could find of this long time minor league player.

El Cieguito
"El Cieguito" was Carlos Dore an early Dominican player in minor league baseball. Carlos played 7 years primarily in the low minors when a guy could spend his career in small town obscurity playing at levels as low as Class D. Dore was a slap hitting left handed outfielder with good speed. He posted solid seven year numbers of .297 with 140 steals and 47 triples. He did have a brief AA stint in 1960 hitting .346 in 11 games. Strangely never an A ball at bat or another return to the AA Tulsa Oilers. Carlos Dore did not begin his begin his minor league career until age 23 with 3 games in Michigan City and he was out of affiliated ball at age 29 after languishing in Class B with the Eugene Emeralds hitting .290 and scoring 99 runs. It is likely that El Cieguito continued to play the outfield in his home country in the winter and summer leagues. Here is Dore in the uniform of the Licey Tigres playing in the Dominican Republic.
