Renie Martin was a Delaware-born right hander of very average ability. He came up with the Royals in '79 and reached the peak of his career in the following year, spending all of the 1980 season as the Royals' fifth starter. Martin spent four more years in the majors with the Royals and Giants, mostly as a long reliever. In 1984, the Giants dealt him with Al Oliver to Philadelphia. Martin was happy to be in Philadelphia, which was close to his Delaware home. Alas, the homecoming was not a very happy one, as Renie went 0-2, 4.60 in just 15.2 innings of garbage relief. That was the end of Renie's big league career, but he has had a long career as a Phillie unicorn. This is the very first legit ML image I have seen of him with Philadelphia, taken from a Wilimington newspaper.

Mike O'Berry (on the left) was a big catcher from Birmingham Alabama. He came up with the Red Sox in 1979, but the organization was neck-deep in catchers. Big as he was, Mike had also never been much of a hitter. The Sox liked him and put in a lot of effort trying to teach him to hit, but of course by the time a guy is that far advanced in age you can't really teach him to hit. Mike got some playing time in '79 when Fisk was hurt, but then he became your typical itinerant third catcher. He never did hit and in most seasons his catcher ERA was not outstanding, but he did cut off the running game pretty well and baseball reference.com gives him a positive defensive rating. Mike played for the Red Sox, Cubs, Reds, Angels, Yankees, and finally in 1985 he wound up his career with the Expos. That was the 'Spos first year sans Gary Carter, and when the designated replacement Mike Fitzgerald needed help Buck Rodgers turned to a crew of discounted vets: Sal Butera, Steve Nicosia, Ned Yost, and Mike O'Berry. Mike got into 20 games, fielded 1.000, had a catcher ERA of 4.76 with a w-l of 3-6 (next worst on the team to Yost, who was 1-3 and 5.14) and hit a resounding .190 in 21 AB. This is the first legit ML image I have seen of Mike with Montreal. With him in the picture is Buck Rodgers (center), who is in the process of taking righthander John Dopson (right) out of the game. That was Dopson's ML debut season, when he went 0-2, 11.08 in four games. Dopson would not resurface in the bigs until 1988. ML images of him from that date on are abundant, but I always like to get a guy in his first year.
