Ed Halbriter or Not Ed Halbriter 1882
I try very hard to get images of players as close to their playing days as possible. Halbriter, who pitched briefly for Philadelphia in 1882, played semi-pro ball for Terre Haute in 1883 and for their professional team in 1884. I suspect he also played for their semi-pro team that same year and is pictured in the Terre Haute Blues team photo. Anyone else see facial similarities between the player on the left, circa 1884, and Halbriter's obituary photo, circa 1936?

GREAT FIND!! Absolutely dead-on!! Same contour of the ears but longer (because of aging..) nose and lips... even the shape of the head... Great Find!!

I disagree about the two photos being the same guy. Take a look at the right ear in the obit photo. There are two bowls in that ear. The younger player in the uniform has a right ear that does not have two bowls in his ear. The shape of the human ear does not change as we age.

Mr. Cusick...
There's a 54 years of differences between the youth/vigor to aging... so using googling with the quote you had stated: "The shape of the human ear does not change as we age." and there are a slew of info stating the opposite... https://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=U...ange+as+we+age Not trying to be nitpicky with you... At the same time, I do appreciated all your inputs for helping us to insure the correct names/photos, every time... A surprising element would be to go back from your childhood photos to teens, to 30s, and to finally to our current age... one will be quite surprised to see how much we have changed... aging is not a pretty thing to watch... lol Cause I know... sadly... Still a fantastic find of seeing a photo of Ed (132 years ago!) to his obituary (85 years ago)... is a remarkable treasure of bygone ball players... Many thanks to you all, for your contributions of making our photo collections up to date, as well as, a joy to use in Our Field of Dreams...

I have the same reservations as Cusick so I'm not ready to say it is him with 100% certainty. The ear is the main issue with me as well. But the overwhelming facial similarities with everything else is compelling.
In case you want to check it out, here is the entire team from 1883 or 1884. |

Does those players in the photos have names that matches Dto7's newspaper clipping? If it's not him, dang those eyebrows, nose, mouth and shape of head/hair appears very convincing... so the verdict is what?

UKBaseballfan has enlisted the opinion of facial ID expert BMarlowe. Until the result of that analysis is completed I am leaving the obituary photo in the Facepack. My personal opinion is that I think it is Halbriter but I am no expert.

Mr. Jabez - My statement about the shape of the ear not changing did not come from using Google, like yours, but came from reading explanations by Marlowe, the baseball photo facial recognition expert with whom cinemaodyssey will be consulting on this Halbriter matter. Marlowe has said that the shape of the ear is the most reliable indicator over time in making photo comparisons across different ages of a person.
I did glance at the list of references you found through Google. It appeared to me that most of them said that the ear could grow, which has nothing to do with changing the shape of either the profile or the characteristics within the ear. Some indicated that there could be a breakdown of the bone or other structures over time, but those appeared to be rare situations. |

With clarity of what you and cinemaodyssey had pointed out, now I understand the depth of the meaning with your original post... I apologized by jumping the gun in not getting the "whole" meaning of what you are conveying about: "the shape of the human ear does not change" - not relating to the length of the ear as we aged... Ditto!

Well this is one player I've been looking for. Sadly not front-facing but I'll take it! Currently up for purchase at RMY Auctions.

I haven't seen this pic posted here so this may be an upgrade to the other color photo that was posted years back.
